00:00Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the scenes from film that blew up online.
00:12To be clear, these will all be from 2010 onwards, as breaking the internet before then just wasn't as impressive.
00:30Number 30. Music Across Generations Sinners
00:35As one of the most successful original movies in years, Sinners made waves in general.
00:51However, it's this musical moment that has gotten the internet talking.
00:55Sammy Preacher Boy Moore plays his blues song at his cousin's juke joint.
01:00As he plays and the crowd dances, the camera moves among them in one incredibly executed long take, and arguably the movie's centerpiece.
01:09Older blues player Delta Slim's words about the power of music prove prophetic,
01:14as not only are tribal musicians from Africa present, but also rappers, hip-hop artists, and other genre artists yet to come.
01:23The moment encapsulates not only how incredible music can be in the moments, but also how styles build upon each other and move people, regardless of time period.
01:40Number 29. First time, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
01:44While this anthology film is one of the Coen brothers' less famous works, it still made its mark on internet culture.
01:52One vignette sees an unnamed cowboy character, played by James Franco, set to be hanged...again.
01:58The first time was interrupted.
02:00During the second time, he makes a great quip to the distraught man next to him.
02:04And so, a meme was born.
02:07Do you have anything to say before a sentence is carried out?
02:10Sentence?
02:12What's my sentence?
02:15After text sets up a situation...usually something along the lines of, when upsetting, yet very specific situation happens, this will be followed by an image of Franco in the scene.
02:31Usually with an added caption of someone more experienced.
02:38Number 28.
02:43Calvin Candy's Troll Face
02:45Django Unchained
02:47Leonardo DiCaprio is a veritable meme machine.
02:50More on that later.
02:51In just this Quentin Tarantino film alone, his expression and gestures led to several world-famous memes.
02:58His name was Joel, maybe one day he said he was cold.
03:02One of them is in the dinner scene, where DiCaprio's character Calvin Candy makes a joke.
03:08His smug expression upon hearing the reaction to his remark became an instant meme.
03:13It's generally used as an image macro, with Candy's smugness being a troll-like response to someone else's stupid remark.
03:21Or, to be more self-deprecating.
03:24Whatever the situation, Candy's expression is far sweeter than the man himself.
03:28Well, hell, I can't imagine two weeks in Boston.
03:30Two weeks in Boston!
03:34I've been joking!
03:36Number 27.
03:39Let It Go
03:40Frozen
03:41Disney musicals have led to some of the most popular songs among both kids and kids who got older.
03:55However, most of Disney's biggest hits were before the internet really got going.
04:00Enter Frozen.
04:01The movie's hit song, Let It Go, became a massive viral sensation.
04:05I don't care what they're going to say
04:11Cover versions have been done by everyone, from amateurs to major recording artists.
04:16But all that hype pales in comparison to the official YouTube video, which has been viewed billions of times at this point.
04:24The song's popularity is massive, and fans show no signs of letting it go.
04:30Cole never bothered me anyway
04:35Number 26.
04:36Rotating Hallway
04:38Inception
04:43This mind-bending sci-fi thriller is filled with scenes that became memes.
04:48But one of them stands tall on its own merits.
04:51Beneath several layers of dreams, Arthur faces off against several assailants in a hallway.
04:57However, in the level above this, Arthur is in a van that's flipping.
05:02Don't worry if you can't follow it, because the result is what matters.
05:05As Arthur fights the men, the entire hallway rotates because they're in Arthur's dream, and he's spinning too.
05:12Even more amazingly, this incredible sequence was achieved without CGI.
05:28The scene still has the internet's head spinning years later.
05:32OH!
05:37ON
05:49takk
05:50Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
05:51Number 25.
05:52We don't talk about Bruno.
05:53Encanto
05:55What a nightmare.
05:56Felix!
05:57Hey, she needs to know, baby.
05:58She needs to know.
05:59We don't talk about Bruno.
06:00The Madrigal Family's musical number about the Klan's black sheep, Bruno, is a certified
06:08mega-hit.
06:09Not only is it absurdly catchy and well-choreographed, it also blends together various styles.
06:16We've already talked about how big Disney songs can be, but even knowing that, nobody
06:21was prepared for this song's success.
06:23Least of all, the filmmakers, who didn't even nominate it for an Oscar.
06:28We Don't Talk About Bruno topped Billboard charts for a month in multiple countries.
06:41The song's success was just as incredible online, with fan recreations and tributes galore.
06:47Despite its title, nobody could shut up about Bruno.
06:51Number 24.
07:07Make Your Own Kind of Music.
07:09The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.
07:21This extremely metafictional movie, in which Nicolas Cage meets Javi, a superfan of his
07:26played by Pedro Pascal, is full of grade-A meme fodder.
07:30However, one of its most outlandish scenes naturally became the biggest.
07:35In their attempt to write a movie together, Cage and Javi take LSD, hoping for some inspiration.
07:42Cut to the duo driving on the road while Mama Cass's Make Your Own Kind of Music plays.
07:46Cage's unimpressed expression contrasts hilariously with Pascal's joyful smile.
08:04That delightful disparity has led to plenty of viral memes on YouTube and TikTok alike.
08:09They certainly have us singing their praises, even if nobody else sings along.
08:24Number 23.
08:25The Peter's Return.
08:27Spider-Man.
08:28No Way Home.
08:29Okay.
08:32Who the hell are you?
08:36I'm Peter Parker.
08:37That's not possible.
08:38I am Spider-Man.
08:40The degree of hype around this movie was absolutely unreal.
08:44After it was revealed that previous Spider-Man villains were coming back, naturally, we all
08:49hoped that the actors, who played Spider-Man himself, would come back as well.
08:53The trailers confirming it didn't calm things down.
09:08They, in fact, calmed up.
09:10And in the film proper.
09:12Every interaction between the different Peters and each getting their own moment to shine,
09:16or at redemption, only got the internet even more excited.
09:20This was a level of fan service we never thought to expect, but we're thankful to have received.
09:29Number 22.
09:30Henry Cavill Reloads His Arms.
09:33Impossible.
09:34Fallout.
09:35This spy thriller is among the most highly regarded in the storied franchise.
09:39One of its most unexpectedly impactful moments happens during a brawl in a bathroom.
09:44Henry Cavill's character August Walker readies himself for a fight by thrusting his arms out
09:50to loosen them up.
09:51The motion reminded many of reloading a gun.
09:54The movie was so extra that it became a meme pretty much immediately after it debuted in
10:04the trailer, usually indicating a willingness to fight.
10:08Cavill's punch reload became so iconic that he's reprised it in another movie since.
10:14Number 21.
10:15Dance-Off.
10:16Triple R.
10:17A historical Indian buddy action movie seems an unlikely global success, but Triple R proved
10:31appealing internationally.
10:33While there are many standout scenes, this dance number positively blew up.
10:38When friends Ram and Beam are put down by an arrogant Englishman, they decide to show him
10:43up through dance.
10:45What is Natu?
10:46The dance and accompanying song, Natu Natu, not only got the rest of the party joining
11:01in, but the internet too.
11:03The original has drawn hundreds of millions of views on YouTube and TikTok and received
11:08plenty of imitators.
11:09The toe-tappingly catchy number has proved successful with many award shows.
11:14Much like being at the end of it, the scene left its competition in the dust.
11:20Number 20.
11:21Rick Dalton points at the TV.
11:35Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
11:37You never really know what the internet will get a hold of.
11:40One scene in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sees Rick and Cliff watching
11:44one of Rick's old TV shows.
11:46While lounging in his chair, Rick sits up, snaps, and points at the TV to signal his upcoming
11:51appearance.
11:53The internet thought that this was just the funniest thing, and a new meme was born.
12:00The meme began on Twitter before spreading to Reddit and other reaches of the internet
12:05and is typically used to display recognition.
12:07Dozens upon dozens of examples have been made, each with the screenshot of Rick, or in the
12:13memes case, the writer, pointing at the TV in excitement.
12:18Number 19.
12:19Godzilla Powers Up.
12:21King of the Monsters.
12:23This film was met with quite a lot of hype before its release in May of 2019.
12:28Luckily, the movie did not disappoint.
12:30In one particularly amazing sequence, Godzilla powers up and unleashes multiple atomic waves
12:35against Ghidorah, turning its multiple heads into drifting dust.
12:45He then explodes in a bright nuclear blast, decimating both Ghidorah and the surrounding
12:50buildings.
12:51Godzilla then emerges from the rubble and is recognized as the king of the monsters by the
12:55other kaiju.
12:56It's arguably the most badass scene in a movie full of badass scenes, and it certainly got
13:01the internet talking.
13:02Both die-hard kaiju fans and casual Godzilla viewers bowed to the filmmakers, recognizing
13:07the thrilling spectacle on display.
13:11Number 18.
13:16Shirtless Kylo Ren.
13:18Star Wars Episode VIII.
13:20The Last Jedi.
13:21Do you have something, a cowl or something you could put on?
13:27There was a lot of talk surrounding The Last Jedi.
13:30The Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic user scores drew particular attention, and the movie was
13:35enormously divisive.
13:36But there was one thing that everyone agreed on.
13:39Adam Driver is one good-looking dude.
13:41Kylo Ren appears shirtless in one sequence, and the internet collectively gasped in amazement.
13:46They began referring to Kylo as Ben Swolo, leading to various Twitter reactions and memes
13:52regarding the shirtless actor.
13:53This movie is filled with extravagant special effects, but the best bit of eye candy was
13:59a muscular male body.
14:00Let the past die.
14:01Kill it, if you have to.
14:06That's the only way to become what you were meant to be.
14:11Number 17.
14:12Keanu Reeves.
14:13Always Be My Maybe.
14:15So where's your man?
14:17Oh, there he is.
14:19Sam!
14:22The internet loves some Keanu Reeves.
14:25And suffice to say, almost no one expected him to show up in a Netflix rom-com.
14:30In Always Be My Maybe, Reeves plays a pretentious version of himself, serving as the new boyfriend
14:36of Sasha Tron.
14:37The actor took a short break from shooting John Wick 3 to be in the movie, and he even
14:42offered Randall Park some ideas for the credits song, I Punched Keanu Reeves.
14:46He also improvised with the other actors, and it was he who decided to wear lensless glasses.
14:57Reeves helped elevate the already great movie, and the internet was left in sheer delight.
15:01It's one of the best and most surprising cameos in recent cinema memory.
15:15Number 16.
15:17I'm the Captain Now.
15:19Captain Phillips.
15:20This thriller saw the inexperienced Barkhad Abdi, starring as the head pirate, Abduwale
15:25Musay.
15:26Abdi had never acted before and was working as a limo driver, DJ, and phone salesman when
15:32he attended a casting call for the movie.
15:34He got the role, and what a debut it was.
15:37Abdi received an Academy Award nomination, and his improvised line, I'm the Captain Now,
15:43sparked endless memes on the internet.
15:50Variations of the memes spread throughout Reddit, Imgur, FunnyJunk, and Tumblr, most of
15:56which used a, look at me, I'm the X now template.
16:00It takes a special kind of talent to upstage Tom Hanks, and Barkhad Abdi is that special
16:05kind of talent.
16:06Number 15.
16:07The Last Ride.
16:09Furious 7.
16:11Furious 7 was one of the best films in the franchise.
16:14Its production was marked by tragedy, however, with star Paul Walker dying in a car crash
16:19in November 2013.
16:21He was in the midst of filming Furious 7, and his face was later imposed over physical
16:26stand-ins, including Walker's brothers Caleb and Cody.
16:29The most famous scene of the movie is its ending, in which Dom says goodbye to a retiring Brian.
16:36The scene was also a goodbye to Walker himself.
16:39Playing over the sequence is Wiz Khalifa's See You Again, which was written as a tribute
16:44to Walker.
16:48It's a beautiful scene, and the internet thought it a very touching eulogy to the late actor.
16:55Number 14.
16:56Time in a Bottle.
16:57X- Days of Future Past.
17:00Earning stellar reviews and multiple accolades, X- Days of Future Past is widely regarded as
17:06one of, if not the best movie in the X-Men series.
17:10The movie's technical filmmaking was lauded, with many critics and fans singling out the
17:15iconic Time in a Bottle sequence.
17:24The scene sees Quicksilver zipping around a kitchen, causing people to punch themselves
17:28in the face, stealing hats, and moving bullets.
17:31It was by far the most popular scene from the film, and the clip has accumulated millions
17:36of views on YouTube.
17:37The craft, humor, creativity, and imaginative visuals were all praised, and it instantly became
17:43one of the most famous scenes in superhero fiction.
17:45And that's saying a lot.
17:47Number 13.
17:49Darth Vader.
17:50Rogue One.
17:51A Star Wars Story.
17:52This tragic Star Wars prequel was released immediately after the light-hearted and traditional
17:57The Force Awakens.
17:58It certainly made for a jarring, tonal shift.
18:10The end of Rogue One sees most of the protagonists dying, and in one particularly famous scene,
18:16Darth Vader slaughters a group of rebel troops.
18:19The scene works perfectly on its own, but it's also a wonderful bit of fan service hearkening
18:23back to the original trilogy and one of cinema's greatest villains.
18:28The sequence is pure Star Wars, and it may even have generated the most discussion and
18:32excitement from the Disney era of movies.
18:34Yes, even more than a shirtless Adam Driver.
18:37Number 12.
18:39Messages From Home.
18:41Interstellar.
18:42This Christopher Nolan space epic is certainly filled with bombastic and imaginative sequences,
18:55famous docking scene.
19:04But it still finds time for humanity, and that is perfectly represented through the messages
19:10from home scene.
19:11Due to time dilation, Cooper's brief foray on the ocean planet actually spans 23 years
19:17back on Earth, and Cooper watches two decades worth of video messages from home while displaying
19:21incredible emotion.
19:22The scene is heartbreaking, and it was rightfully regarded as one of the year's best sequences.
19:43But it also turned into a meme, and Matthew McConaughey reaction videos was born.
19:48Perhaps the most popular is the one that sees Cooper reacting to the Force Awakens trailer.
19:52It's not often that Best Picture winners set the internet alight, but Parasite proved the
20:18exception.
20:19When the film was filled with tons of great sequences, it was a simple jingle that went
20:23viral.
20:24But...
20:25The second thing is, Jessica...
20:32Lee and Ian is my husband, who is another.
20:33Kim Kim Yang.
20:34Kim Jae-chan is scamming the Park family with her brother Ki Woo.
20:37And to remember her fake backstory, she creates a little mnemonic jingle with Ki Woo.
20:41The two recite the jingle one last time before entering the Park household,
20:55and for some reason, the internet really took a liking to it. The scene was parodied and memed,
21:01actress Park Sodom taught viewers how to sing the tune, and the song was even available to
21:05download on the official Parasite website. It's amazing what a clever mnemonic device can do.
21:11My daughter's sister, my son, my daughter, my son, my son, my son, my son, my son, my son, my son, my son.
21:17Ding dong.
21:20Number 10. The Argument. Marriage Story. Like Parasite, Marriage Story isn't the type of movie to go viral,
21:27but it did, thanks primarily to the proliferation of Netflix and the incredible cast.
21:33You want to present yourself as a victim because it's a good legal strategy? Fine, but you and I both know you chose this life!
21:39The memes also helped. In the movie's most famous sequence, Nicole and Charlie enter into a vicious
21:45argument that eventually has Charlie wishing that Nicole would die. The scene garnered instant
21:50attention, with the internet at large praising the performances of Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver.
21:55Every day I wake up and I hope you're dead. Dead like, if I could guarantee Henry would be okay,
22:01I'd hope you'd get an illness and they'd get hit by a car and die. Driver's red, screaming face became
22:07the de facto image of the movie, and the scene gave rise to a four-panel meme that ended with
22:12Driver punching the wall, and therein lies the power of good acting.
22:16The Stairway Dance
22:30The Stairway Dance is unique and fun enough to elicit thousands of copycats,
22:35and it was filmed in a real location. Like the famous Rocky Steps, this scene was begging to be
22:40copied over and over and over and over again. The stairs are located in the Bronx, New York,
22:54and are located near the 167th Street Station. They are now crowded with tourists, many of whom
23:00recreate the Joker's bizarre dance down the steps, some of them dressed in Joker attire themselves.
23:06Its legacy is yet to be seen, but like the Rocky Steps, we wouldn't be surprised if fans are
23:12recreating this scene 40 years into the future.
23:268. The Sunken Place
23:28Get Out
23:29This movie came out of nowhere, and despite its less than $5 million budget, it ended up grossing
23:34over $250 million at the worldwide box office. It's hard to pinpoint what exactly struck a chord with
23:41mainstream audiences, but many praised the movie's commentary on the Black experience in America.
23:46Do they know I'm Black?
23:52No. Should they?
23:56This is visualized to absolute perfection in The Sunken Place, which is where Missy Armitage sends
24:02Chris's consciousness after hypnotizing him. The dehumanizing theme of The Sunken Place,
24:18the haunting music, and its unique visuals combine to make it the movie's most famous sequence,
24:24and the image of Chris's hypnotized, crying face has become one of the most iconic movie images of the
24:2921st century.
24:367. Terrence Fletcher's Lesson
24:39Whiplash
24:46Serving as Damien Chazelle's breakthrough, Whiplash received universal praise when it was released in
24:512014, with much attention going towards the performance of J.K. Simmons. Simmons plays a jazz
24:58instructor named Terrence Fletcher, who is prone to mistreating his pupils.
25:022. Terrence Fletcher's
25:15Why do you suppose I just hurled a chair at your head, Neiman?
25:17Near the beginning of the film, the band is playing Hank Levy's Whiplash when Fletcher grows irate at
25:22Andrew Neiman's off-tempo drumming. After countless starts and restarts, Fletcher throws a chair at Neiman's
25:28head, slaps him across the face, calls him offensive names, and screams directly in his ear.
25:40With this, everyone knew they weren't watching just another music movie. They also knew that
25:45Simmons would be an Oscar winner, and they were right.
25:486. Shallow, A Star Is Born
25:54This is actually the fourth time that A Star Is Born has been made. Following the original in 1937,
26:12in remakes in 1954 and 1976, this time Bradley Cooper was at the helm and he did an exceptional
26:19job directing, writing, performing, and singing. Shallow is performed three times in the movie,
26:34with the most famous being Ali and Jackson's performance of the song at Jackson's concert.
26:40While the Star Is Born name is obviously popular, it was Shallow that pushed this version over the edge.
26:55The song peaked at number one in more than 20 countries and won the Academy Award for Best
26:59Original Song, and the music video has since accumulated over one billion views on YouTube.
27:055. Martha, Batman Vs. Superman, Dawn of Justice
27:19Sometimes the internet breaks for the wrong reasons. Case in point, the infamous Martha sequence from
27:25Batman Vs. Superman. The titular fight doesn't last that long, and it ends in a spectacularly silly
27:31fashion when Batman hears the name of Superman's mother.
27:34You're letting him kill Martha!
27:43What does that mean? Why did you say that name?
27:47Learning that his own mother shares a name with Martha Kent, Batman decides to stop the fighting,
27:52acknowledging Superman's humanity. The scene was met with wide derision by the internet and quickly became
28:01a lot of people. It was one of many reasons for the movie's lackluster critical reception.
28:124. What a Lovely Day, Mad Max, Fury Road
28:17This entire movie broke the internet, as no one could believe just how good it was. CGI certainly has its
28:24place, but there's just something about real cars smashing into each other that really gets the
28:29blood pumping. While the movie is basically credits-to-credits action, the most famous sequence sees the
28:48characters driving into a raging sandstorm. The visuals and music are superb, especially when the car and
29:02bodies are flying through the sand tornado. But it's Nux's reaction to the flying debris that became a
29:07phenomenon, and What a Lovely Day quickly became one of the most popular movie quotes of the decade.
29:223. Peter Parker Disintegrates, Infinity War
29:26There's just something about a good tragic ending that sets the internet ablaze. The end of Infinity
29:38War sees Thanos snapping his fingers and activating the gauntlet, wiping out half of all life in the
29:44universe. This includes the young Peter Parker, who sadly turns to dust in Tony's arms.
29:49The scene was enormously popular, not only for the shock of Thanos' victory and the incredible
29:57destruction that results, but also for the intense emotion that the deaths generate. And this being
30:03the internet, the sequence was also memed to death, with image macros depicting subjects disintegrating
30:09into particles, usually accompanied by the caption, I don't feel so good. We needed the laughs to cover up
30:15the tears. 2. Jordan Belfort Discovers a New Phase, The Wolf of Wall Street
30:22Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the finest actors of all time, and watching him act is watching a master at
30:27the top of his craft. And sometimes that craft involves squirming around on the ground drooling,
30:33groaning like an injured animal, and opening a Lamborghini door with your foot.
30:46In the movie, Jordan swallows an amount of methequalone that results in his partial paralysis.
30:52The following ten minutes are pure comedy gold, and it proves DiCaprio's qualities as a physical,
30:57comedic performer. When the internet was clamoring for DiCaprio to win an Oscar,
31:08they were undoubtedly thinking of scenes like this.

31:311. Iron Man Snap, Avengers Endgame
31:35This movie was more than ten years in the making, and the results certainly did not disappoint.
31:40Both in movie terms and the resulting cultural impact.
31:432. And again, that's the hero gig. Part of the journey is the end.
31:47At the very end of the film, Tony Stark taunts Thanos and snaps his fingers,
31:51resulting in the deaths of both Thanos and Tony himself.
31:552. And I am Iron Man
32:04To say that this moment broke the internet would be a massive understatement. It's all anyone talked
32:12about in the weeks to follow. The snap itself became a major cultural moment, and people even
32:18synced the scene to New Year's countdowns. For many, the MCU will be a defining point in their movie-going
32:24lives, and this served as the perfect culmination.
