00:00In India, the elephant's tremendous strength has been harnessed for many labors, sort of skin-covered jeeps, and although they work for peanuts, they never complain.
00:22Well, almost never. Now, once there was a little elephant, Bobo, by name, who was very discontented with his lot. Bobo, because he was little, was given little logs to carry. But he knew as he got bigger and bigger, he would be given bigger and bigger logs. To Bobo, his future looked very dark. Oh, much darker than that.
00:45There, that's more like it. When he thought of the rut he was in, Bobo would get very mad and would trumpet angrily. Oh, Bobo, you're madder than that.
00:58Then, one day, Bobo received a letter from his Uncle Jumbo, who was with the circus in America. Uncle Jumbo wrote about the fine time that he was having, and enclosed some snapshots.
01:11Oh, boy, the circus. Baseball. Little Bobo could just imagine himself on the baseball team.
01:25Well, that clinched it. Bobo decided to pack his trunk and go to America on the first boat out.
01:31It was brought to Bobo's attention, but this boat did not solicit elephant patronage. Bobo felt very hurt when he fell down on his first attempt.
01:42Well, of course, one doesn't have to go up the gangplank. There's always another way to get on a boat.
01:48And if one way doesn't work, there's always another way.
02:18Oh, that's the hard way, Bobo. Better try something else.
02:27Well, any other elephant would give up about this time, but not Bobo.
02:35Finally discouraged, Bobo was about to give up when a little minor bird came along.
02:41The minor bird is native to India and is about four inches tall.
02:45Uh, about five inches tall.
02:47The minor bird told Bobo that he was doing it all wrong.
02:51He should paint himself pink if he wanted to get on the boat.
02:55Bobo would try anything once and hurried off to paint himself.
02:58Of course, the minor bird knew that no one would ever admit that they actually see a pink elephant.
03:06Bobo was a little skeptical of this new idea and timidly started past the guard,
03:11who apparently didn't see him.
03:13Or maybe he did.
03:17Bobo found that his new color let him have the run of the boat.
03:27And although he couldn't understand it, he accepted it as do him as a passenger.
03:32Although navigation was not Bobo's strongest point,
03:34the captain allowed him a turn at the wheel.
03:36The passengers also proved to be very friendly.
03:40They would share their meals with Bobo.
03:43And even their beds.
03:44The trip from India is a long, long voyage.
03:50And most everyone makes it by boat.
03:52But little Bobo being different, made it mostly by rail.
03:55Then one day, America, the land of the free, the home of the Braves, the Dodgers, the Yankees, the circuses.
04:04Oh yes, those circuses.
04:07In going through the customs, Bobo felt a little hurt.
04:10His was the only trunk that customs officers wouldn't inspect.
04:13In fact, they wouldn't even touch it.
04:17After being treated so kindly on the boat, Bobo was surprised that the city people acted so strangely to him.
04:28They wouldn't answer him when he asked where the circus was.
04:31They ignored him completely.
04:33And seemed actually anxious to avoid him.
04:38Even the kiddies acted strangely.
04:43Sad and tired from his futile search, Bobo sat down on a curb to rest.
04:49When suddenly...
04:52That did it.
04:55The crowning insult.
04:57Washing his beautiful color off.
04:58But lo and behold, Bobo would have been invisible to everyone.
05:02suddenly became the object of a lot of attention.
