The death toll from the collapse of a residential building in the Pakistani mega-city of Karachi rose to 21 on Saturday (July 5), after rescue teams worked for a second day in search of survivors.

The apartment block, located in the impoverished Liari neighborhood, crumbled around 10 a.m. on Friday.

Residents said they heard cracking sounds moments before the structure gave way.

Authorities said the building had been declared unsafe and eviction notices were issued over the past three years.

However, some landlords and residents told AFP they never received the warnings.

A senior district official said over 50 buildings in the district have been deemed unsafe, with six evacuated since Friday.

Many of the victims are believed to be women, who are typically at home during the day.
