Welcome to another episode of our Toyota Hiace campervan conversion series! 🚐 We're documenting our complete DIY transformation of a 2016 Super Long Wheelbase High Top 4x4 Japanese Import into a fully functional mobile home.

In this tutorial, we focus on vinyl flooring installation - a critical phase that affects both the look and functionality of your van conversion. We share 5 key insights that every DIY van builder should know before starting their flooring project.

What You'll Learn:
Why we selected lightweight European ash blonde vinyl over heavier alternatives
How to avoid common flooring mistakes that add unnecessary weight
Strategic planning for fridge systems and electrical installations
Professional installation techniques for durable results
Weight management considerations for 4x4 van performance

Our approach prioritizes practicality and efficiency, perfect for extended off-grid living and Australian conditions. We demonstrate why avoiding heavy materials like composite laminate and hybrid planking is crucial for optimal van performance.

This episode is part of our comprehensive van life journey, showing real challenges and solutions for anyone interested in alternative living or mobile independence.

00:00Off they go, bags in tow
00:02Matt and Chrissy hit the road
00:05Maps unfold, stories told
00:07Adventures never getting old
00:10Matt and Chrissy roam so free
00:13Through the city, past the sea
00:15Finding joy in every mile
00:18G'day, it's Matty from Couple of Sitters
00:20And it's a chilly, chilly morning here this morning
00:24We're still in Brisbane, still looking after the puppies
00:27And good start to the day
00:30Got a coffee ready to go
00:31And the van has had a fair bit done to it
00:34Since the last video
00:36I didn't set the camera up
00:37Because I was just too zoned in on what I was doing there
00:41And yeah, forgot to actually give you an update
00:44So apologies for that
00:45So let's have a quick look at what we've done so far
00:48Okay, so we have finished prepping the floor
00:52All the anchor points have been puttied up
00:54And we've had some boxes that we've made to cover over the wheel arches
00:59Sitting there nice and square
01:01And a good distance from each other
01:03So there's plenty of space in here
01:05For us to be able to mount the sliding component for the fridge
01:09With one of our other drawer sliders on the side
01:11Another drawer slider there
01:13And our two 500 or two towers of 500mm drawers there
01:19So I'm not going to walk on the floor at the moment
01:21Because I've spent a fair bit of time cleaning that yesterday
01:24In preparation for the next stage
01:27And the next stage is laying the vinyl
01:31Now again, I rough cut that last night
01:34And we've got that all ready
01:36So we've got our primer there ready to roll
01:38We've done a bit of work on tidying up the framing around the inspection hatch
01:43That's nice and snug now
01:45Really, really good fit
01:46And yeah, at this point in time
01:49It is going to prime the floor
01:52And then get the glue down
01:54And from there we're going to drop the vinyl in
01:56So the vinyl that we've got that I rough cut
01:59Was about 8 square metres for a whopping $100
02:06So let's have a quick look at this here
02:08So this is what we're going for
02:10It's like a really nice ash blonde sort of colour I suppose you'd say
02:15And it's a European manufactured flooring product
02:19Which I've never heard of this mob before
02:21Haven't done any research on them
02:23And honestly for what is $100 worth of materials
02:28It feels comfortable underfoot
02:31And honestly I'm not that worried about who made it
02:35And what the specs are behind it
02:37It's a very, very good looking quality product
02:41And it feels good
02:42And it's going to do the job
02:43So, you know, composite laminate, timber floors
02:47And, you know, having the hybrid planking nights
02:50Or stuff that are way too heavy
02:52This is one solid piece
02:54And it's going to go hard up against the edges
02:56We'll laminate over the box
02:58Laminate
02:59We'll put the vinyl down over the boxes
03:02And that way there's a good seal around everything
03:05And then we're going to have a look at what to do next
03:09Which will most likely be
03:10Once that glue has gone off
03:12And the floor's had 24 hours to set
03:14Is to plan the positioning of the drawers
03:17And the positioning of the drawer slider
03:20Over the top of that
03:21I've got some markers set down here
03:23For our string line
03:24Which line up with the markers that we've got at the back
03:27Bit of motion sickness with this video
03:30Spinning around so much
03:31So, marked out where the drawer is going to be
03:3612mm body for the carcass
03:38Fridge, 12mm
03:39So, drawer inside there
03:42Fridge slider inside there
03:44Obviously with the carcass on both sides of the fridge slider
03:47Again, another 12mm spacer for the drawer
03:50And another 12mm there as well
03:52So we'll be able to run that down nice and square
03:55That'll run flush with the body of that box there
03:59So what we'll do is
04:00Once the solar install's all been done
04:04Because they're going to need to fit
04:06GPOs and other stuff like that
04:08We'll put the carcass on here
04:10And we'll have an access point for wiring and everything to go through
04:13We'll be plugging a power board into there
04:16And then that way as the slider runs up and back
04:20We're all in good condition
04:22We may even put that in beforehand
04:26And give them access to be able to
04:28Maybe mount the GPO inside the wall there
04:32Not too sure yet
04:33Still thinking that one through
04:34So, gonna get into it
04:35We'll see you soon
04:36Okay, we have got the primer down
04:39And this stuff went a lot further than what it said on the packaging
04:43There's one litre in there
04:44And the calculations they say
04:46You should get about four square metres of coverage out of it
04:49This area is closer to six square metres
04:53Six and a half
04:54You take the boxes out of the equation
04:56It might be a fraction of a square metre in there
04:59One litre of the Dunlop primer
05:01And I'll put a link to that in the description
05:03Covered the entire floor
05:04So, this had been sanded and vacuumed
05:06Washed and then vacuumed again
05:08Before the primer's been put down
05:10Next step, we're gonna chuck down the glue
05:12And then put the vinyl down
05:14The vinyl's been pre-cut to the size that we needed that
05:16So, what I will be doing is
05:19I'll be leaving the little inspection hatches
05:21So, the little hatch for the spare tyre
05:24And the hatch for the fuel filter
05:28They'll be off
05:29And then what I'll do is
05:30I'll be able to feel for where they are
05:32And map them out
05:33And then just use the Stanley knife
05:35And then carefully cut that section of vinyl out
05:38And they'll be able to glue the vinyl straight back on top of these pieces
05:42So that that piece matches whatever else there is in there
05:46So, it's gonna be a pretty easy process
05:48I'll get the measurements on how far that is from the head back down
05:52So I know roughly where I'm gonna be starting
05:54But she should be pretty straight forward
05:59Let's get into it
06:24Well there we go, vinyl's down
06:25It's about an hour and a half
06:26I'm pretty stoked with that
06:27First time I've ever laid vinyl
06:28There were a couple of bubbles there
06:29So just push them out
06:30And there's a bit of bedding there
06:31There's a bit of bedding there
06:32I'm pretty stoked with that
06:33First time I've ever laid vinyl
06:34well there we go vinyls down it's about an hour and a half i'm pretty stoked with that
06:52first time i've ever laid vinyl uh there were a couple of bubbles there so just push them out
06:57and there's a bit of bedding that i'll need to do along the edges but otherwise
07:00i'm pretty happy with how that's come out considering it's the first time i've done it
07:07all right gonna do the cleanup now
