00:30He had a dream.
00:44A dream that shook kingdoms.
00:48Favored above his brothers.
00:52But favor cast a dangerous shadow.
00:56Betrayal had a price.
00:59But so did survival.
01:03From a father's embrace, to a slave master's house.
01:09From the depths of a forgotten prison, to the heights of power.
01:15From the pit, to the prison, to the palace.
01:19His suffering would save nations.
01:23And his broken life, the very instrument of deliverance.
01:29Because while others meant it for evil, God meant it for good.
01:41Coming up on Turning Point.
01:43God sent him before them.
01:47He prepared all of this.
01:49This was providential on God's part.
01:51Joseph didn't know it when it was happening.
01:53He probably wondered, why is this happening to me?
01:55But as time went by, the key point in the passage is that even before the famine, the Lord sent Joseph ahead.
02:07That's it.
02:08That's it.
02:09That's it.
02:10That's it.
02:11Keep it simple.
02:12Keep it specific.

03:19I need to tell you something that we probably all know if we stop and think about it for a moment.
03:38Few things in life hurt us worse than personal betrayal.
03:42If you ask me if anyone has ever betrayed me, I'd answer with a cautious yes.
03:48Would you?
03:50Have you ever been betrayed?
03:52Betrayal is one of the strongest words on the emotional scale.
03:56We don't use it lightly.
03:58What makes betrayal so raw and painful is that it comes not from our enemies,
04:03but from those who are close to us, from our families, from our friends.
04:08People can't betray us unless we've allowed them into our life,
04:12unless we've let down our guard and trusted them.
04:15So betrayal exposes and exploits our vulnerability.
04:19It wounds because it makes us subject of a double cross.
04:23Perhaps you've shared your most private thoughts with someone only to discover
04:28they betrayed your confidence and told someone else.
04:32Maybe you've paid someone in advance for work or equipment
04:35without getting what you bargained for,
04:37or more painful is discovering that your spouse is cheating on you
04:41or a sibling has lied to you.
04:44Many people feel betrayed by a dad or mom who failed to love or respect them,
04:49or by a business partner who did them dirty.
04:53David said this on one occasion.
04:56I think he captured the essence of what I've been saying.
04:59He said,
05:00It is not an enemy who taunts me, then I could bear it.
05:05It is not an adversary who deals insolently with me,
05:08then I could hide from him.
05:10But it is you, a man, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend.
05:16Did you know that even Jesus was not immune to all of this?
05:20You know what happened to him at the hand of Judas.
05:24And then, of course, Peter, who denied him three times.
05:27He was also denied by the religious leaders of his day.
05:31He felt the sting of betrayal.
05:33But I want to talk to you today about one of the most famous
05:36stories in the Bible about betrayal,
05:38and it happens to be in the life of Joseph.
05:40The whole story is in the 37th chapter of Genesis.
05:44Joseph's formative years were linked to his father Jacob's journeys.
05:49Joseph and his brothers traveled alongside their dad,
05:53and they witnessed the increasing prosperity of the family.
05:57While working for his father-in-law in Hebron,
06:00Jacob became very wealthy.
06:03In fact, his flocks had become so great
06:05that there was no longer any room in Hebron to graze them.
06:08So he eventually dispatched his ten older boys to Shechem
06:14to graze the flocks in a larger area.
06:17One day Jacob asked young Joseph to go see how his brothers
06:22and the flocks were doing in that part of the land.
06:26Israel said to Joseph,
06:27Are not your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem?
06:30Come, I will send you to them.
06:33Now, it's not hard to understand why Jacob was concerned
06:37about his boys.
06:38First, they were grazing near Shechem,
06:41where his daughter Dinah had been raped,
06:43and his boys had committed murder in defending her honor.
06:47Now, it came to pass on the third day when they were in pain
06:51that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi,
06:55Dinah's brothers, each took his sword and came boldly upon the city
06:59and killed all the males.
07:02So that happened there where the boys were with the sheep.
07:06Second, his boys had been involved in flagrant evil in the past,
07:10and on one occasion Joseph had witnessed them
07:13and reported the incident to his father.
07:16He snitched on them,
07:17which made him even more popular than his dreams.
07:20The fact is, Jacob's sons weren't very good boys,
07:24so he wanted to see what they were up to.
07:27I have to also tell you that probably Jacob was remembering
07:30what he was like when he was their age.
07:32He was no saint either.
07:34In fact, his nickname was Trickster.
07:36He was a deceiver who got in a lot of trouble
07:38because he could never tell the truth about much.
07:41He was pretty sneaky and manipulative when he was younger,
07:44and I think the thing that worried Jacob most about his sons
07:47was probably the things he remembered that he had done himself.
07:50So he sends Joseph, his young son, to go check on the boys.
07:55Jacob said,
07:57Please go and see if it is well with your brothers
07:59and well with the flocks, and bring back word to me.
08:03So he sent him out of the valley of Hebron,
08:06and he went to Shechem.
08:08The Bible says that Joseph looked high and low
08:11when he got to Shechem, and he couldn't find his brothers.
08:14Where were they?
08:16A stranger explained to Joseph that they had moved on to Dothan,
08:21another town close by.
08:23So Genesis 37, 17 says,
08:26Joseph went after his brothers and found them in Dothan.
08:30Let me pause and tell you two interesting things
08:33about Joseph in this regard.
08:35First of all, he was courageously obedient.
08:38Joseph had to have known that he wasn't popular
08:41with the rest of the boys.
08:43It was no secret that his brothers hated him,
08:46and he could feel the tension with them.
08:48Yet he knew that his job was to do what his father told him to do.
08:52So he went to check out his brothers 50 miles away
08:56in a place far from his father's protection.
08:59He immediately obeyed.
09:01There was no questioning, no complaining, just obedience.
09:04He did what his father asked him to do, point number one.
09:08But number two, he was not just courageously obedient.
09:12He was completely obedient.
09:14Get this.
09:15He gets to Shechem, and his brothers aren't there.
09:18Now, if I'm Joseph, and I know how they feel about me,
09:21here's how I reason.
09:23My dad told me to go to Shechem and find my brothers.
09:26They're not in Shechem.
09:27I'm going home.
09:29But not Joseph.
09:31The Bible says when he found out that they'd gone to Dotham,
09:34which was 24 miles down the road,
09:37he went to Dotham to find them.
09:39He knew that his father's desire was to find out
09:43how the boys were doing.
09:45He went the extra mile to be obedient
09:47because he knew his father's heart.
09:49His promptness and thoroughness reveal his character.
09:52Joseph's response was one of courageous
09:55and complete obedience.
09:57Now, the interesting thing is how he's going to be received
10:01by his brothers.
10:02How will they receive him?
10:04The next verses in our passage tell us
10:06that they come up with an evil scheme against Joseph.
10:09Let's read about this in verses 18 through 20.
10:13Now, when they saw Joseph afar off,
10:16even before he came near them,
10:18they conspired against him to kill him.
10:21Then they said to one another,
10:23Look, this dreamer is coming.
10:25Come, therefore, let us now kill him
10:27and cast him into some pit.
10:29And we shall say,
10:30A wild beast has devoured him,
10:32and we shall see what will become of his dreams
10:35when we do that.
10:36I mean, a little sarcasm there.
10:38Joseph the dreamer is about to have his dreams
10:40buried in a pit, according to his brothers.
10:43So they saw him coming.
10:44You say, how did they know it was Joseph?
10:46Because he was wearing his special coat of many colors,
10:50the coat that represented the fact that he would be the heir
10:52to the family,
10:54one of the reasons why he was so hated by his brothers.
10:57He was the heir, and they hated him.
11:00They also noticed that they were far off,
11:03far away from anyone who could witness their actions.
11:06And their minds immediately began to conspire
11:09how they might get rid of this pest in their family,
11:12this dreamer who made their life so miserable.
11:15Their plan was to throw him into a pit,
11:18a term referring to a deep hole with a wide bottom
11:21and a very narrow top designed to ensure
11:24that once someone was placed there,
11:26climbing out would be impossible
11:29because of the way the pit was constructed.
11:32This wasn't a moment of passion.
11:34That took Joseph from his family.
11:36This was a premeditated crime on the part of his brothers.
11:40They were going to kill him and throw him into a pit.
11:43But the story becomes more intriguing
11:46because of a couple of the brothers.
11:49One by the name of Reuben, who was the oldest,
11:52should have been the head of the tribe.
11:54In the midst of all of this,
11:56he comes up with a proposal
11:58because he's uncomfortable with killing Joseph.
12:02And we read in verses 21 and 22 of Genesis 37,
12:06But Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands
12:10and said, Let us not kill him.
12:13And Reuben said to them, Shed no blood,
12:15but cast him into this pit which is in the wilderness,
12:18and do not lay a hand on him.
12:20And the Bible tells us that he said that
12:22so that he could come and deliver him out of their hands
12:25and bring him back to his father
12:27when they weren't paying attention.
12:29He thought if he could get his brothers
12:30to put him in a pit, they would pay no attention.
12:33He'd come back and get Joseph and rescue him.
12:36So it came to pass, verse 23,
12:39when Joseph had come to his brothers,
12:41that they stripped him of his tunic,
12:44the tunic of many colors that was on him,
12:48and they took him and cast him into a pit.
12:51And the pit was empty, and there was no water in it.
12:54Now watch this.
12:55And they sat down to eat a meal.
12:58Here's their brother in this pit,
13:01probably crying out to get out of the pit in anguish.
13:04And the boys sit down and have lunch
13:06in earshot of what they've done to Joseph.
13:11But the story continues.
13:13Another brother gets involved.
13:15This brother is named Judah,
13:17and Reuben wanted to save his brother,
13:20but he wouldn't have the chance
13:21because Judah comes up with a new plan.
13:24Now let me just tell you about Judah.
13:26He seems to be the materialist in the family
13:28because he figures a way he can get something out of Joseph.
13:32Watch this, verse 25.
13:33And they lifted their eyes and looked,
13:35and there was a company of Ishmaelites
13:37coming from Gilead with their camels,
13:39bearing spices, balm, and myrrh on their way
13:42to carry them down to Egypt.
13:43So Judah said to his brothers,
13:45What profit is there if we kill our brother
13:48and conceal his blood?
13:49Let's sell him to the Ishmaelites,
13:52and let not our hand be upon him,
13:54for he is our brother and our flesh.
13:57And his brothers listened,
13:59and the Midianite traders passed by.
14:01So the brothers pulled Joseph up out of the pit
14:04and sold him to the Ishmaelites for 20 shekels of silver,
14:09and the Ishmaelites took Joseph to Egypt.
14:12Those brothers sold Joseph for the equivalent of $9.
14:17Apparently Reuben wasn't present
14:19when all the scheming took place,
14:21for when he rejoined his brothers, Joseph was gone.
14:25And Genesis 37 records what happened next.
14:28Then Reuben returned to the pit,
14:30and indeed Joseph was not in the pit,
14:32and he tore his clothes and returned to his brothers and said,
14:36The lad is no more, and where shall I go?
14:40Now watch this.
14:42He comes back to the pit and Joseph isn't there,
14:45and he's somewhat worried about Joseph,
14:47but he's more worried about himself.
14:49He says, The lad is not here, and where shall I go?
14:51Because he's got to give a report to his dad,
14:53and he knows that his father is going to be very upset
14:56when he doesn't come back with Joseph.
14:58Reuben had one thought, not about Joseph,
15:02but about himself.
15:03What is going to happen to me?
15:07So the Bible says they took Joseph's tunic,
15:12they killed a kid of the goats,
15:15and dipped the tunic in the blood,
15:17and they sent the tunic of many colors,
15:19and they brought it to their father and said,
15:22We have found this.
15:24Do you know whether this is your son's tunic or not?
15:27And he recognized it and said,
15:30It is my son's tunic.
15:32A wild beast has devoured him.
15:34Without doubt, Joseph is torn to pieces.
15:37With Joseph on his way to Egypt as a slave,
15:41the boys purposefully deceived their father.
15:45Somebody said they weren't willing to lie to their father,
15:48but they didn't have any problem deceiving him,
15:50as if there's a difference between the two.
15:53Then Jacob tore his clothes, put sackcloth on his waist,
15:58and mourned for his son for many days.
16:01And all his sons and all his daughters arose to comfort him,
16:05but he refused to be comforted.
16:07And he said,
16:08I shall go down into the grave to my son in mourning.
16:11And his father wept for him.
16:14It's evident as you read the story
16:16that Jacob believed that Joseph was dead
16:18throughout all of his adult life.
16:20For all of his adult life,
16:22he believed that his son was dead,
16:24and his whole world was colored by the fact
16:26that he had lost his son.
16:28He thought about it every day.
16:30It was never far from his mind.
16:32What a sad story for a man to lose
16:34his beloved son in such a way.
16:37And what hardness there must have been
16:39in the hearts of his boys who allowed their own father
16:43to go through such awful grief
16:45when they knew what was going on was not the real story.
16:50One of the great betrayals of the Bible,
16:52the betrayal of Jacob by his own sons.
16:57So I want to talk with you for a moment
16:59about what we should learn from this as God's people.
17:02First of all, we should learn about the power of envy.
17:06Acts 7, 9 says,
17:08the patriarchs becoming envious sold Joseph into Egypt,
17:12but God was with him.
17:14Envy caused these boys to sell their brother into slavery.
17:19They did it because they were jealous of Joseph.
17:21He was an affront to them.
17:23That's why they put him in the pit.
17:25That's why they told his father he was dead.
17:27That's why they sold him to the Midianite traders,
17:30not because they didn't like him as a person,
17:32but because they were jealous of him
17:34and his role in the family.
17:37He had the coat of many colors.
17:39It teaches us a little bit, doesn't it,
17:42about sibling rivalry.
17:44Could I just put this little practical thought in here?
17:47Don't ever say to your kids,
17:48why are you not like your brother?
17:50Why are you not like your sister?
17:52I'll tell you why they are not like their brother and sister,
17:55because they are not their brother and sister.
17:58And they're all individuals,
18:00and thank God they're all different.
18:01What a sad story it would be if they were all alike.
18:04But if you're not careful as a family,
18:07you can engender envy among the children,
18:09and certainly Jacob bore some guilt here.
18:12When he pulled off the tunic thing,
18:14he set the brothers' hearts on fire with envy and jealousy.
18:19Then notice, secondly, not only the power of envy,
18:22but the pretense of morality.
18:24This is throughout the story,
18:26and it's really amazing to me how these brothers
18:30patted themselves on the back for not killing their brother
18:34when they sent him off to Egypt as a slave.
18:38In other words, we could have done worse,
18:40and we didn't do worse, and we are really good people.
18:43We're righteous people.
18:44We could have killed this boy, but we didn't.
18:46We just sent him off as a slave.
18:48You say, nobody does that.
18:50You do it, and I do it.
18:52We congratulate ourselves
18:54that we haven't done the worst thing
18:56when we've done something that's just as sinful
18:58on God's chart as what we didn't do.
19:01The natural man will do almost anything
19:04to substitute his own morality for God's morality.
19:08It's just how we're made.
19:10A man was telling how he had overcome temptation
19:12in the village general store one day.
19:15He said he had the chance to steal a bag of flour
19:18while the shopkeeper was out of the room for a minute,
19:21and I resisted the impulse
19:23and just took a loaf of bread instead.
19:25That's how we reason.
19:28Watch out for the pretense of morality.
19:31Don't make yourself better than you should be
19:33when you're doing something you shouldn't do.
19:35The power of envy, the pretense of morality,
19:39and the penalty of sin.
19:41Sin always hurts people,
19:44even when we can't see the hurt right away.
19:47The brothers' sin hurt Joseph,
19:50making him a slave and causing him to be separated
19:53from his brothers and his father for 20 years.
19:56It hurt Jacob, who thought his son was dead
19:59and grieved all those years for Joseph.
20:02But most of all, that sin hurt the brothers.
20:06As the memory of that wicked day replayed over and over
20:10in their minds, we shouldn't fool ourselves
20:13into thinking we can get away with sin.
20:15Everybody pays the penalty.
20:17And there's a verse in the Bible that says this,
20:20Be sure your sin will find you out.
20:24I've been watching this now for over half a century,
20:27and I can promise you it's pretty accurate.
20:31Hardly anybody gets away over a long period of time
20:35with things like what the brothers did.
20:38They carried it in their heart,
20:40and it destroyed their ability to sleep at night.
20:43Then let me talk with you about the providence of God finally.
20:47The brothers sold Joseph into slavery,
20:49thinking they had shut him up and his dreams were over.
20:52But you know what happened?
20:54In doing what they did,
20:55they made his dreams come true.
20:58In seeking to defeat God's purposes,
21:01they helped in their fulfillment.
21:03Let's turn to Psalm 105 and verse 16,
21:07and notice how this paragraph summarizes
21:10what happened to Joseph's life.
21:12Moreover, God called for a famine in the land.
21:16He destroyed all the provision of bread,
21:19and he sent a man before them, Joseph,
21:22who was sold as a slave.
21:24They hurt his feet with fetters.
21:26He was laid in irons until the time that his word came to pass.
21:31The word of the Lord tested him.
21:33The king sent and released him.
21:35The ruler of the people let him go free.
21:37He made him lord of his house and ruler of all his possessions,
21:41to bind his princes at his pleasure and teach his elders wisdom.
21:46If you read that paragraph, you see God's perspective on this.
21:50God sent him before them.
21:53He prepared all of this.
21:55This was providential on God's part.
21:57The Bible tells you what happened to Joseph
21:59when he was taken away.
22:01You think, well, what if the story ended
22:02when he was sold as a slave?
22:04The story didn't end there.
22:05The Bible tells you what happened.
22:07Behind the scenes, God is at work.
22:09So if you're going through a difficult and confusing time
22:12and you're asking yourself in your mind,
22:15God, what are you doing?
22:17Remember that if you walk with God,
22:19God's purpose will be resolved in this life or in the next.
22:24Often we only see his hand in hindsight.
22:27Right now it may seem like betrayal and hurt and confusion
22:31are dominating your life.
22:34But his grand design will eventually come to light
22:37and you will trust him.
22:39And it may seem like the dark clouds hover over you,
22:42but the Lord is at work in your life.
22:45That's been so true in my life and I know it's true in yours.
22:49Ladies and gentlemen, we don't have to live our lives
22:52dominated by envy and jealousy.
22:55Pray for the person you're envious and get over it
22:58because you're not hurting them,
23:00you're hurting yourself.
23:01You're burning up your own spiritual vitality
23:04and you don't want to do that
23:06because that doesn't do any good.
23:08Maybe you're like some people I know
23:09who go about driving their car
23:11and making up speeches that they're going to give
23:13to somebody when they ever see them,
23:15talking out loud.
23:17Whenever you see somebody talking in their car
23:19and nobody's there,
23:20they're probably making up a speech for somebody
23:22they're going to go see.
23:25But don't live your life like that.
23:27And if you've been playing this silly game
23:29that so many people play
23:31where you think you're righteous
23:33because you're not doing as many bad things
23:35as other people you know,
23:37that's also a dead-end street.
23:40You go down that road
23:41and you're going to get in a lot of trouble.
23:43Don't do that.
23:44Be honest with what's going on in your life.
23:47And then, most of all, remember God is at work.
23:53He's at work.
23:55If you trust him, he's trustworthy.
23:59And the Bible tells us that he does these things for us
24:04who are called according to his purpose,
24:07that he might show us his power in our lives.
24:11I'm going through some stuff right now.
24:13I never anticipated.
24:15But I know that God is at work in my life.
24:18And I don't know what he's up to.
24:20And he hasn't given me the final story.
24:22And I'm going to hang on as long as I can until he does.
24:26But I want you to know I can trust God.
24:35Along the way, he's showing me some things
24:38I didn't know before and helping me be strong
24:42in the midst of physical weakness.
24:45But every day, I trust God to show me what to do,
24:48and he never fails.
24:50And he's always there.
24:52Sometimes I have moments, as you can well imagine,
24:55but I never have a moment when the Lord God
24:58is not there to help me.
25:00All of us, in the midst of whatever we go through,
25:03should ask the Lord to help us be his person
25:07in the midst of it and trust him every day
25:11to give us the wisdom we need as we go forward.
25:15And I promise you God will do that.
25:17I don't say that because it's in the Bible.
25:20I said because I've experienced it,
25:22and I know it's true.
25:24I know it's true.
25:29I know it's true.
