00:00:00The End
00:00:30I don't know.
00:01:00I don't know.
00:01:30I don't know.
00:02:00I don't know.
00:02:30I don't know.
00:03:00I don't know.
00:03:30He's doing some pretty serious soul-searching.
00:03:32He's right on schedule to reversing his position on the big oil tax credit bill before next week's vote.
00:03:37Good.
00:03:37What else?
00:03:39What else?
00:03:40My mole in the patent office red flagged something.
00:03:43A car with no engine.
00:03:44The inventor was a well-respected MIT research scientist a few years ago, and he resigned his tenure, and now he fell off the map.
00:03:52A car with no engine doesn't need gas or oil to run.
00:03:56Do you know what happens to the Ameristake oil and gas company if someone invents a car that runs without an engine?
00:04:01I imagine it'd take a hell of a hit.
00:04:03That's a bit of an understatement, Barrett.
00:04:06The company goes under along with 20,000 jobs, retirement funds are compromised, political careers are jeopardized, and most importantly, I lose a fortune.
00:04:14I've already got my two best men on it.
00:04:18This thing will never see the light of day.
00:04:20I don't want any loose ends on this, okay?
00:04:22It all gets erased.
00:04:24Invention, inventor, drawings, notes.
00:04:27Are we clear?
00:04:29We're clear, sir.
00:04:29Good.
00:04:31Because if anything does show up, your best two men won't answer for it.
00:04:35You will.
00:04:46Let's see what we got here.
00:04:49Right.
00:04:51Right.
00:04:51Damn it.
00:05:04Why aren't you reading anything?
00:05:16Ah.
00:05:20That's more like it.
00:05:21I beg you, you son of a bitch.
00:05:32Can I classify that as a good morning?
00:05:45Damn good morning.
00:06:06Thanks.
00:07:07Morning, JD.
00:07:08Morning, Ned.
00:07:13It's just junk.
00:07:14Yes.
00:07:16Mm-hmm.
00:07:17Mm-hmm.
00:07:18Awfully cheerful for so early.
00:07:24Oh, something tells me you got some mail that wasn't junk.
00:07:28From your alma maternet?
00:07:29I got it.
00:07:30Early admission to MIT.
00:07:31Yes.
00:07:32Cambridge will never be the same.
00:07:35Hey, I've got some good news too.
00:07:37Come on, I'll show you.
00:07:38Where's Glen Pebble Road?
00:07:39He passed it.
00:07:40How far back?
00:07:41You guys looking for Ned Larfield?
00:07:42How'd you guess?
00:07:43He's the only one who lives on Glen Pebble Road.
00:07:48He's the only one who lives on Glen Pebble Road.
00:07:55He passed it.
00:07:56How far back?
00:07:57You guys looking for Ned Larfield?
00:07:58How'd you guess?
00:08:00He's the only one who lives on Glen Pebble Road.
00:08:01He's the only one who lives on Glen Pebble Road.
00:08:07So, what do you think, MIT?
00:08:32I think it's fantastic, Ned.
00:08:36I mean, it's gonna change everything.
00:08:38Does it really work?
00:08:39You bet it does.
00:08:41You know, the oil companies are gonna pay you a lot more to destroy this than anyone
00:08:46will to manufacture it.
00:08:47Well, it's a good thing I'm not after money then, huh?
00:08:50You better patent this.
00:08:52Quick.
00:08:53I mailed my application to the patent office a couple months ago.
00:08:56No words yet.
00:08:58Why don't you just do it online?
00:09:01Alright.
00:09:03You know, maybe you should drive down there.
00:09:06I mean, this is way too important than to let some geek bureaucrat screw it up.
00:09:11I'm not worried about it.
00:09:13I mean, who else would be stupid enough to consider using paint as a solar conductor?
00:09:18Besides, I've refined the process a dozen times since then.
00:09:22Oh, I filled out another application.
00:09:25Do you mind putting it in the mail for me?
00:09:27Sure.
00:09:28That's a good girl.
00:09:33I'm really proud of you, kid.
00:09:35Ned, I don't know how I could ever thank you for all the...
00:09:39You're gonna knock him dead.
00:09:44You better get going now.
00:09:45You'll be late for school.
00:09:46Yeah.
00:09:47I'll see you tomorrow morning.
00:09:48Tomorrow morning.
00:09:49MIT.
00:09:50I'll see you tomorrow morning.
00:09:51Tomorrow morning.
00:09:52MIT.
00:09:53You all soon.
00:09:54I'll be back.
00:09:55I'll see you tomorrow morning.
00:09:57Bye.
00:09:59Uf.
00:09:59What am I doing?
00:10:00You'll be back.
00:10:01I'll see you tomorrow morning.
00:10:03Bye.
00:10:04Goodbye.
00:10:05Bye.
00:10:06Bye.
00:10:07Bye.
00:10:08Bye.
00:10:10Bye.
00:10:12Bye.
00:10:14Bye.
00:10:15Bye.
00:10:17Bye.
00:10:18Bye.
00:10:19Bye.
00:10:20Bye.
00:10:51That's him. Let's move in.
00:11:10Hold on.
00:11:20Damn.
00:11:21The TV crew.
00:11:30What now?
00:11:32We watch and wait.
00:11:34Ned Larfield?
00:11:59Hi, I'm Eve Pretton from KQAP News.
00:12:02I understand you have something pretty special to want to show us.
00:12:05Oh, yeah.
00:12:06Go to bed now.
00:12:15Yeah.
00:12:17Yeah, yeah.
00:12:24Perfect.
00:12:27I just wanted to kill you.
00:12:29I just wanted to say that if you don't have a fish...
00:12:34I'm not sure.
00:12:37I'm not sure anything.
00:12:40It's not semi-all right now.
00:12:44My hair looks so cute.
00:12:48I'm gonna do something.
00:12:51Oh!
00:12:51Doesn't look like an uplink unit to me.
00:13:08It's not.
00:13:10Whatever footage they took is still in that van.
00:13:21We'll deal with the TV crew first.
00:13:23The inventor's not going anywhere.
00:16:21You boys lost or something?
00:16:32From the U.S. Patent Office.
00:16:34I'd like to talk to you about the application you recently filed.
00:16:36Sure.
00:16:37Let's go inside.
00:16:39I'll be right back.
00:16:40I'll be right back.
00:16:46I'll be right back.
00:16:52I don't know.
00:17:22I don't know.
00:17:52I don't know.
00:17:54Excuse me.
00:18:11Can you tell me where I am?
00:18:13Oh, hey there.
00:18:14You forget something?
00:18:16Guess I forgot a lot of things.
00:18:18Damn, what happened to you?
00:18:21I don't know.
00:18:22I can't remember.
00:18:24Do you know me?
00:18:26Sure, yeah.
00:18:27We're old friends.
00:18:30Who am I?
00:18:31Look, I kind of have my hands full right here.
00:18:34Just give me a minute, all right?
00:18:35Ladies is back and to the left if you want to get yourself cleaned up.
00:18:38I'll be right with you.
00:18:42Who am I?
00:18:45Some ego on these TV people.
00:18:47Why can't I remember anything?
00:19:07I don't know.
00:19:37Oh, you guys are back again, too.
00:19:41Find this place all right?
00:19:42Yeah, I found it just fine.
00:19:44Hey, uh, don't mess with that, all right?
00:19:48Can he ever, uh, show you what he was working on?
00:19:51No, no. He kept it himself.
00:19:54What do you mean we're back again, too?
00:19:57That woman who's...
00:19:59What the hell did you do that for?
00:20:08He was a loose end.
00:20:09What if that woman was our woman? She was in here earlier.
00:20:12She's dead.
00:20:13This grease monkey could have been talking about anybody.
00:20:15Let's get out of here. We already wasted enough time.
00:20:37It's the compressor.
00:20:56He was murdered and then robbed.
00:21:17Lousy 200 bucks.
00:21:23Ouch.
00:21:23Ouch.
00:21:23Let's get out of here.
00:21:27I don't know.
00:21:57I don't know.
00:22:27I don't know.
00:22:57I don't know.
00:23:27There is a balance to the universe, a balance that can be found in all the broad, sweeping
00:23:40ideologies of mankind, from war to peace, love to hate, good to bad, right to wrong, and
00:23:51finding that balance, well, it's not always easy, but I can promise you it's worth the effort.
00:24:03All right.
00:24:05I don't know.
00:24:07I don't know.
00:24:19To empower doubt is to empower weakness.
00:24:35And contrary to popular belief, the weak, they don't inherit the earth.
00:24:40They inherit two things.
00:24:42Low self-esteem and low income.
00:24:47Hello?
00:24:48Yes, this is Dr. Griggs.
00:24:54Yes, sorry to bother you.
00:24:56We're having a little trouble with the credit card you checked in with.
00:24:59Really?
00:25:00Well, I'm not sure why that happened.
00:25:01Tell you what, I'll be down in a few moments to straighten that out.
00:25:05Great.
00:25:11Attaining wealth is like attaining anything else you want in life.
00:25:14And it all starts with balance.
00:25:16Right here.
00:25:19Can I get a ride?
00:25:37So, when does your seminar start?
00:25:47Ten minutes.
00:25:48Do you think it's a good idea to be drinking?
00:25:50Oh, that's sad.
00:25:51It's not drinking.
00:25:52It's liquid courage.
00:25:54Isn't your seminar about self-confidence and inner strength?
00:25:58That comes in all forms.
00:26:03Speeding tickets for this segment called license, registration, and phone number.
00:26:09Oh, I love her pieces.
00:26:11Have you ever seen them?
00:26:13Speeding tickets are a part of life for Americans, especially those with heavy feet.
00:26:18Uh, yeah.
00:26:19Yeah, I'm very familiar with her work.
00:26:22During a routine traffic stop, Pennsylvania state trooper James Slade was doing his own version of profiling.
00:26:28That is, if you're young, female, driving a few miles over the speed limit and westbound, chances are Trooper Slade pulled you over.
00:26:36Those women who provided their phone numbers got off with just a warning.
00:26:40Other women, including this reporter, who did not cooperate with Trooper Slade's request, got speeding citations with the highest dollar fine allowed.
00:26:49There you have it.
00:26:50To the list of MySpace and Facebook, you can now add Trooper Slade's stretch of Route 322 for hot spots to meet hotties.
00:26:58This is Eve Preston with KQAP News at 5.
00:27:01What'd I tell you?
00:27:03She's great.
00:27:04She's just wonderful.
00:27:09Because to empower doubt is to empower weakness.
00:27:22Contrary to popular belief, folks, the weak don't inherit the earth.
00:27:26They inherit two things.
00:27:28One, low self-esteem.
00:27:31Two, even lower income.
00:27:34If you were searching for firewood, you go searching for it in the streets of Philadelphia, or Boston, New York.
00:27:47The answer to that is no.
00:27:48I want to hear you say it.
00:27:49No.
00:27:50Louder, like you mean it.
00:27:51No.
00:27:52With some confidence.
00:27:53No.
00:27:54No.
00:27:55No.
00:27:56No.
00:27:57That's right.
00:27:58And similarly, when you go searching for wealth, you do not go searching for it among the poor.
00:28:03Because attaining wealth is like attaining anything else you want in life.
00:28:07And it all starts with balance right here.
00:28:10I want you to picture with me.
00:28:13Close your eyes.
00:28:15Put your hands on your temples, your two fingers, both hands.
00:28:18And I want you to picture a river.
00:28:21A fast flowing river.
00:28:24And you throw a stick in that river and the current takes it wherever the river is going.
00:28:29Now, I want you to picture what you want in life.
00:28:34Do you want money?
00:28:36Do you want power?
00:28:38Do you want love?
00:28:40Picture that as the river.
00:28:43And you are the stick.
00:28:46And balance of the mind will give you the confidence, the power to throw yourself into that river and ride the current to success.
00:28:55Because if you are unhappy with your life, I am here to tell you that you have the power to change it.
00:29:00To the right.
00:29:01To the right.
00:29:03To the right.
00:29:05To the right.
00:29:06To the right.
00:29:08To the right.
00:29:30Thanks.
00:29:36Man, I can't wait to get back and see.
00:29:38Is there a flight in the morning?
00:29:39Early.
00:29:40Too early.
00:29:42Okay, that's one room, one night, two queen beds.
00:29:46Can we get someone to return our rental, please?
00:29:48We've got an early flight in the morning.
00:29:49I'll be happy to take care of that for you, Mr. Black.
00:29:52Good night.
00:29:53Good night.
00:29:53Oh, Dr. Greggs.
00:30:01Dr. Greggs, could you stop at the desk, please?
00:30:03I just got to get in the car.
00:30:04Thanks.
00:30:04Dr. Greggs?
00:30:06You.
00:30:07No comment.
00:30:07I need to talk to you.
00:30:09No comment.
00:30:10I'm sorry I'm not interested.
00:30:14I need to talk to you.
00:30:15Oh, good.
00:30:16Can we set up an appointment?
00:30:18Thanks.
00:30:18Thanks.
00:30:19I need to talk to you.
00:30:21Please help me.
00:30:23Please, I need your help.
00:30:28Stop following me.
00:30:30Dr. Greggs, I need to talk to you.
00:30:31I have nothing to say to you.
00:30:33Go back in the hotel.
00:30:33I have your card.
00:30:34I'm not listening.
00:30:35Go back in the hotel.
00:30:37I need your help.
00:30:38How did I get your card?
00:30:42Please.
00:30:44Oh, my God.
00:30:45Drive!
00:30:46What?
00:30:46Drive!
00:30:46Drive!
00:30:47Drive!
00:30:47Drive!
00:30:53Now what?
00:31:03Money's already been wired.
00:31:04We've already been paid.
00:31:05Relax.
00:31:07Technically, we did our job.
00:31:09Took out the old man.
00:31:10Destroyed the evidence.
00:31:12She won't be hard to find.
00:31:15Let's get the keys.
00:31:16Who are those guys?
00:31:20They want to kill me.
00:31:21Yeah, I noticed.
00:31:21Why?
00:31:22I don't know.
00:31:23I don't even know who I am.
00:31:25What are you talking about?
00:31:25I can't remember anything.
00:31:27I saw those guys earlier, but I have no idea why they want to kill me.
00:31:32Yeah, I knew you were obnoxious, all right?
00:31:33But I never knew you were dangerous.
00:31:36So you do know me.
00:31:37You really don't remember anything, do you?
00:31:39So why was I meeting you at 7 o'clock tonight?
00:31:58You weren't meeting me at 7.
00:32:00I had a seminar that started there.
00:32:01Then how did I get your card?
00:32:03I have no idea.
00:32:05Hi.
00:32:06Hi, guys.
00:32:07What can I get you?
00:32:07I will have a beer.
00:32:08And what are you going to have?
00:32:14Make that two beers.
00:32:15You got it.
00:32:16I'll be right over.
00:32:17Thanks.
00:32:20No, don't thank me yet.
00:32:22Ordering drinks for dates has never been my strong suit.
00:32:27Am I a date?
00:32:30I should be so lucky.
00:32:38So, what do you remember?
00:32:45Nothing.
00:32:46Nothing?
00:32:47Not even your name?
00:32:48Nothing?
00:32:50No, I...
00:32:51It's as if I was...
00:32:54Born on the side of a mountain this morning.
00:32:57Are you sure we don't know each other?
00:33:02I...
00:33:02I get the feeling there's some sort of history or something.
00:33:06Oh, history?
00:33:07No.
00:33:07Um...
00:33:08Not really a history.
00:33:11But you know me.
00:33:13I mean, a lot of people know you.
00:33:15They know who you are.
00:33:16You're...
00:33:16You're, um...
00:33:19Kind of a celebrity.
00:33:22I'm a celebrity?
00:33:23Yeah, I mean, you do these news reports on TV.
00:33:29Do you think those men want to kill me because of something I reported on?
00:33:32It's possible.
00:33:34I gotta be honest here with you.
00:33:36Um...
00:33:37The stuff you do...
00:33:39It's not all that hard-hitting.
00:33:43What do you mean?
00:33:44You specialize in lighter pieces meant to mess up people's lives.
00:33:51Like the cop who, uh, was trying to pick up a girl at a traffic stop.
00:33:54Or the horny husband trying to work phone sex into his monthly budget.
00:34:00Or, uh...
00:34:02An honest businessman trying to inspire people to better their lives.
00:34:08That sounds pretty bleak.
00:34:10Mm-hmm.
00:34:10Um...
00:34:15What do you do for a living, Dr. Briggs?
00:34:18I'm an honest businessman trying to inspire people to better their lives.
00:34:23I don't know.
00:34:24Oh, yes.
00:34:26These are on the house.
00:34:28Compliments of Seth over there.
00:34:30He says he's a big fan of yours.
00:34:32And any time you want to do a piece on hot bartenders, he's your man.
00:34:39FYI, he's married with two kids.
00:34:43If he wants an autograph, your name is Eve Pretzen.
00:34:46And I think we probably know each other well enough for you to call me Harry.
00:34:53Did I ruin your life, Harry?
00:34:56My piece hasn't aired yet.
00:34:57Go on.
00:35:00Drink up.
00:35:02I don't even remember if I...
00:35:04If I drink.
00:35:09Hmm.
00:35:10I guess I do.
00:35:13That's not drinking.
00:35:18Tequila is drinking.
00:35:19Your turn.
00:35:36Now tequila.
00:35:38And lemon.
00:35:43Just like riding a bike, huh?
00:35:49Let's throw it over to field reporter Eve Pretzen on location
00:35:56with an unlikely gang of desirable undesirables.
00:36:02Today I'm with the cheerleading squad of Springfield High School.
00:36:06They are returning champions to this weekend's state cheerleader finals
00:36:10to defend their title.
00:36:12Trouble is, these girls have had three coaches this season.
00:36:16All three have resigned.
00:36:17According to many in the high school community,
00:36:20including faculty, students, and parents,
00:36:23these pom-pom prima donnas have taken over the school
00:36:26through intimidation tactics.
00:36:29Pom-pom prima donnas?
00:36:31That's great.
00:36:32Where do you come up with that stuff?
00:36:34I just think what I could do with a real assignment.
00:36:36Are you kidding?
00:36:37You're fantastic at this.
00:36:38Your ratings are through the roof.
00:36:40I want a shot at a desk, Bob.
00:36:42Everybody pays their dues, Eve.
00:36:44You know that.
00:36:44Just be patient.
00:36:46Is that what this affair is?
00:36:48My dues?
00:36:49You knew what the deal was when we started this.
00:36:52I mean, we're not hurting anyone here.
00:36:53We're just having fun.
00:36:55It was fun when the lies were just about your marriage.
00:36:57But you told me that you...
00:36:58Hey, I know what I told you, okay?
00:37:01No, it's not okay, Bob.
00:37:03Promises were made.
00:37:05You led me into this relationship with the understanding
00:37:07that you would feed me the opportunities that I would need
00:37:09to separate myself from all the other pretty faces on camera.
00:37:11What are you talking about?
00:37:13You're the most popular field reporter we have.
00:37:15That's got to count for something, doesn't it?
00:37:17I don't want to be popular, Bob.
00:37:18I want a desk.
00:37:19Well, nobody gets a desk if they're not popular, Eve.
00:37:21Nobody gets a desk unless they're taken seriously.
00:37:24And nobody's going to take me seriously
00:37:25interviewing spoiled cheerleaders.
00:37:28If you're not going to do what you said you would,
00:37:31you need to tell me.
00:37:32Shelf life for a journalist is a hell of a lot shorter
00:37:34for women than it is for men.
00:37:35What if I gave you a piece down at City Hall?
00:37:43Would that make me a little more fun to be with?
00:37:45Maybe.
00:37:47When?
00:37:50Tomorrow.
00:37:51We'll talk about it at the office and figure it out.
00:37:54I gotta go.
00:37:55I'm late for Linda's birthday party.
00:37:58Okay.
00:37:59Shh.
00:37:59One, new voicemail.
00:38:14Hi, Eve.
00:38:14Dan Hollenbank with KXUT in New York.
00:38:17Hey, we really enjoyed the material you sent in.
00:38:18Great stuff.
00:38:19But it's just a little too soft for what we're looking for.
00:38:21We've decided to go in another direction
00:38:23for the weekend anchor spot.
00:38:25Best of luck, though.
00:38:26I remember.
00:38:31I remember who I am.
00:38:32I'm Eve Pratsen from KQAP.
00:38:34I thought alcohol was supposed to have the opposite effect.
00:38:37No, no, I remember drinking this very stuff.
00:38:39It's tequila, right?
00:38:41I don't really like it, but Bob does.
00:38:44Who's Bob?
00:38:46My boy...
00:38:47My boss, I think.
00:38:50Oh.
00:38:50Um, do you remember anything else?
00:38:54Like, uh, I was trying to kill you?
00:38:57No.
00:38:59It's that one memory popped into my head.
00:39:03Maybe another shot will do the trick.
00:39:07Seth!
00:39:10Hey, Margo.
00:39:12Have we heard anything from Eve yet?
00:39:14Nothing from her or Al.
00:39:16You try yourself?
00:39:17All day, no answer.
00:39:19You don't think anything happened.
00:39:21What could happen?
00:39:22They're probably shacked up in a holiday
00:39:23and running up the expense account.
00:39:27I hate it when she does this.
00:39:29Does what, Bob?
00:39:31Tries to make a point on company time.
00:39:34Now, if she calls,
00:39:35tell her I want to see her first thing in the morning.
00:39:37Sure thing.
00:39:39Oh, Bob.
00:39:40Yeah?
00:39:41A friend of mine out of KXUT in New York
00:39:44tells me Eve made a run at their weekend anchor spot.
00:39:47Apparently she came up with a light.
00:39:49Is that right?
00:39:50Just thought you ought to know.
00:39:54Yeah.
00:39:56Have a good night.
00:39:57Yeah.
00:40:00Hi.
00:40:00So you remember your car going over the cliff
00:40:05and climbing out of it?
00:40:07No.
00:40:08I assume I was in it.
00:40:10Maybe it was my car.
00:40:12Hmm.
00:40:13And these guys,
00:40:14you saw them kill somebody at the gas station?
00:40:16No, I came out of the bathroom
00:40:17and he was questioning the car.
00:40:20It was horrible.
00:40:21So maybe they're trying to kill you
00:40:22because you're a witness?
00:40:23No.
00:40:24They didn't see me at the gas station.
00:40:25Well, if they don't know that you're a witness,
00:40:28then they're trying to kill you for some other reason, right?
00:40:29Yes.
00:40:30No, I...
00:40:31I don't know.
00:40:32Eve, just go to the police.
00:40:34I'm afraid to.
00:40:35There was a police officer at the gas station
00:40:38and I hid from him.
00:40:39I don't know why.
00:40:40I did.
00:40:40It's just a feeling.
00:40:41And it's like he was after me or something.
00:40:44Like those killers.
00:40:46I got confused.
00:40:47I came looking for you.
00:40:49Your card was all I had.
00:40:51Well, I think it's amazing.
00:40:52You actually found me.
00:40:54Maybe my journalistic instincts kicked in.
00:40:58What I don't get is how they found me at the hotel.
00:41:01They could have followed you.
00:41:02But I hitched a ride in a truck.
00:41:03I mean, and why not...
00:41:04Why not shoot me before I go inside?
00:41:06It makes no sense.
00:41:10Sorry I got you into this, Harry.
00:41:11I know I have no right to ask.
00:41:17Can you please help me find the station where I work?
00:41:20Of course, but what if, uh...
00:41:21What if they beat me to it?
00:41:23I mean, you said it yourself.
00:41:24They found you at the hotel.
00:41:26The only way I survive this is to find answers.
00:41:28Who they are, why they want to kill me,
00:41:30who I am, what I did, who I know.
00:41:32I've got to start somewhere.
00:41:35Right now, it's all I'm cut.
00:41:38What it's worth, you got me, too.
00:41:42All right.
00:41:43Let's see if we can't find out
00:41:44some very little secrets about Eve Brettson.
00:41:51So, these reports are meant to ruin people?
00:41:53No, maybe not ruin people.
00:41:55I think they're meant to just expose people
00:41:57for what they are, you know, like con men,
00:41:59or just taking advantage of people
00:42:02who are less fortunate than them.
00:42:03Then why would people let me interview them?
00:42:05Oh, they don't.
00:42:07You follow them around with a hidden camera.
00:42:08You catch them doing their thing,
00:42:11and when you think you've got enough footage,
00:42:13then you just confront them right on camera.
00:42:16So then it was a good thing?
00:42:19Yeah, I guess for the most part, yeah.
00:42:21I mean, it's popular anyway.
00:42:24Are you a con man, Harry?
00:42:26No.
00:42:27No.
00:42:27I give seminars on the power of positive thinking.
00:42:30I really helped a lot of people.
00:42:31Then why did I think what you were doing was bad?
00:42:34I don't know.
00:42:35Well, what did I say when I confronted you?
00:42:38Um, I don't...
00:42:39I don't really remember.
00:42:41You don't remember?
00:42:42How can you not remember?
00:42:43I mean, you must remember.
00:42:44Well, because I just don't remember.
00:42:45That's... that's it.
00:42:46Can we just leave this?
00:42:46Why are you getting mad at me?
00:42:47I'm not getting mad!
00:42:48You see, this is just the way you handle your interviews.
00:42:51You get all up in people's faces,
00:42:53then you twist their words around,
00:42:54make it seem like they're lying to you,
00:42:55or they're trying to cheat you,
00:42:56but I'm not trying to cheat you.
00:42:58And do you want to know what the difference is
00:43:00between what we do?
00:43:02I try to help people better their lives.
00:43:05Using balance,
00:43:06trying to raise their self-confidence.
00:43:08You just use people to better your own life.
00:43:11That's it.
00:43:12Wait, wait, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:43:13That's it.
00:43:14That's it.
00:43:14I must have done something to piss someone off.
00:43:16Yeah, it's a pretty safe bet.
00:43:17No, no, no.
00:43:18The men that are trying to kill us,
00:43:19I must have reported on something.
00:43:21Something bad.
00:43:21Something...
00:43:22Something really bad.
00:43:24Listen, Eve.
00:43:24Your reports aren't like that.
00:43:26You know, I'm pretty pissed off
00:43:28about the report you're doing on me,
00:43:30but it doesn't make me want to kill you.
00:43:32Wow.
00:43:34I must be a real jerk.
00:43:38No.
00:43:39No, you're not.
00:43:40If I did what you said,
00:43:42if you were trying to help people,
00:43:43and I messed that up for you...
00:43:46Can we just forget about it, okay?
00:43:47You're just doing your job.
00:43:48All right.
00:43:56How do we get in?
00:44:16You're the talent.
00:44:17Security guards always recognize talent, right?
00:44:20I don't know what we're going to find in there,
00:44:21but by the sounds of it,
00:44:23it's not going to be pretty.
00:44:24If it helps get your memory back,
00:44:26it's fine by me.
00:44:28Harry,
00:44:28I don't know how to thank you for helping me.
00:44:31And I don't mean by just getting me here.
00:44:33I mean by making me feel like
00:44:35there's an end worth finding.
00:44:39Wow.
00:44:41What?
00:44:42You.
00:44:43It's like you're not even the same person.
00:44:45Yeah, you got the same hair
00:44:46and the same eyes
00:44:47and the same beautiful lips,
00:44:51but the person that I know on television,
00:44:53that person,
00:44:54I can't even imagine the words
00:44:57thank and you
00:44:58coming out of her mouth
00:44:59in the same sentence.
00:45:01Now I'm thinking that
00:45:02I should go in there
00:45:04and discover whatever it is I did
00:45:05or who I am.
00:45:07Let's make a deal.
00:45:08Whatever we find in there,
00:45:10that's just something we did.
00:45:11It's not who we are.
00:45:13Deal?
00:45:15Okay.
00:45:17Let's go.
00:45:23Thanks.
00:45:31Good evening, Miss Fredson.
00:45:32Here for some late night editing?
00:45:34I am.
00:45:34Is that all right?
00:45:35Well, sure thing.
00:45:36I'll buzz you in.
00:45:37Thanks.
00:45:38Look familiar?
00:45:46No.
00:45:48All right, let's find your desk.
00:45:51There it is.
00:45:53Oh, wow.
00:45:58Okay.
00:46:00Password.
00:46:02Any ideas?
00:46:03You believe in fate, Harry?
00:46:20If I don't, I should.
00:46:23Okay, according to this,
00:46:25these are reports
00:46:25that have already been completed
00:46:27and have aired.
00:46:28This one's called
00:46:31License Registration
00:46:32and Phone Number, please.
00:46:34Speeding tickets
00:46:35are a part of life
00:46:36for Americans,
00:46:36especially those
00:46:37with heavy feet.
00:46:39But some lead foot drivers
00:46:40got off easy recently.
00:46:43During a routine traffic stop,
00:46:44Pennsylvania...
00:46:45That's the cop
00:46:46that I saw earlier
00:46:46at the gas station.
00:46:48Maybe he was there
00:46:49looking for me.
00:46:50Maybe he was working
00:46:51with the killers.
00:46:52That guy looks like
00:46:53he does his own dirty work.
00:46:54Plus, um,
00:46:55Eve, I saw this spot.
00:46:56I think he probably
00:46:57helped him with the ladies.
00:47:02Pom-pom prima donnas?
00:47:05These pom-pom prima donnas
00:47:07have taken over the school
00:47:08through intimidation.
00:47:09That was embarrassing.
00:47:11Pom-pom prima donnas.
00:47:12It's a good title.
00:47:14You know, I remember this one.
00:47:15This was playing
00:47:15in the background
00:47:16when I was having an argument
00:47:17with my boss
00:47:18about my career.
00:47:19Were you defending it?
00:47:20Thankfully, no.
00:47:21I think I was complaining
00:47:22about having to do it.
00:47:23It's just a job, Eve.
00:47:24It doesn't define
00:47:25who you are.
00:47:26What if it does?
00:47:27I mean, what if all I am
00:47:29is what's loaded
00:47:29into these pitiful stories?
00:47:31I don't know anything
00:47:32about your life,
00:47:33but the woman that I see
00:47:34sitting right in front of me
00:47:35now is not the woman
00:47:36in those segments.
00:47:39You make me want
00:47:40to take your seminar.
00:47:41Oh, yeah?
00:47:43Why don't you call up
00:47:44what you're still working on?
00:47:45Yeah, that one right there.
00:47:47Dr. Valance?
00:47:50Credit card debt piling up.
00:47:52Car payment overdue.
00:47:53Can't afford that
00:47:54rising arm interest rate.
00:47:55Now you can make it all
00:47:56go away
00:47:57to the power
00:47:57of balancing the mind.
00:47:59So says Dr. Harry Griggs
00:48:01Master Motivator.
00:48:02But motivator of what?
00:48:05Be it senior citizens
00:48:06on fixed incomes
00:48:07where people eyeball
00:48:08deep in debt.
00:48:09The dubious doctor
00:48:10never met
00:48:11a desperate audience
00:48:12he couldn't convince
00:48:13to dig a little deeper
00:48:14into debt
00:48:15for the promise
00:48:16of mind-bending powers
00:48:17to attract wealth
00:48:18simply by thinking it.
00:48:20Is this true?
00:48:25I mean, do you target
00:48:26people who are desperate
00:48:26for money
00:48:27and put them deeper
00:48:28into debt
00:48:28by exploiting them?
00:48:29No.
00:48:30I offer hope
00:48:31to people who need it.
00:48:33At what price?
00:48:37You know what?
00:48:39I don't want to look
00:48:39at this anymore.
00:48:40I mean,
00:48:41there's nothing here
00:48:42that would warrant murder.
00:48:43These are my keys.
00:48:52That means someone else
00:48:53was driving the car.
00:48:54Somebody was driving.
00:48:57There's got to be
00:48:58something else.
00:49:09These are my bills.
00:49:11That's my home address.
00:49:12I don't know where that is.
00:49:13Let's go.
00:49:29There's 219 right there.
00:49:30You just passed it.
00:49:31Yeah, I know.
00:49:32I just don't think
00:49:32it's a good idea
00:49:33to park out front
00:49:34given the circumstances.
00:49:38We'll park up there.
00:49:39Okay.
00:49:42You know,
00:49:47this amnesia thing
00:49:47could be a blessing
00:49:48in disguise.
00:49:49Yeah?
00:49:49How's that?
00:49:50Well,
00:49:51I could reinvent myself.
00:49:53Only do interviews
00:49:54that are positive
00:49:54and inspiring
00:49:55like you.
00:49:56Yikes.
00:49:57You will bore
00:49:57your audience to sleep.
00:49:59Who cares?
00:49:59I can't remember
00:50:00any of them anyways.
00:50:04Um,
00:50:05thought you might be hungry.
00:50:06Yeah,
00:50:07I'm starving
00:50:07and it looks great.
00:50:09What is it?
00:50:09Eggs and stuff.
00:50:11You know,
00:50:11my dad always said,
00:50:12learn to make
00:50:13a really great breakfast
00:50:14you might find yourself
00:50:15staying the night.
00:50:17Okay,
00:50:17you just lost
00:50:18all your inspiration points.
00:50:20Tell me my dad was wrong?
00:50:21Uh-huh.
00:50:23If you want to change,
00:50:24I'll lend you something.
00:50:25Mmm.
00:50:30This is great.
00:50:32I have to admit,
00:50:33your father must have
00:50:34been on to something.
00:50:35Yeah,
00:50:36he was also
00:50:37a used car salesman
00:50:38that could sell
00:50:39ice to Eskimos,
00:50:40so, you know,
00:50:41grain of salt.
00:50:43Well,
00:50:43that explains
00:50:44your gift with words,
00:50:45but not your choice
00:50:46of product.
00:50:47What are you trying to say?
00:50:49Well,
00:50:49you sell hope
00:50:50instead of used cars.
00:50:51Uh-huh.
00:50:52Larger target base.
00:50:54Not everyone needs
00:50:54a used car.
00:50:56Are you going
00:50:56to charge me, Harry?
00:50:59For what?
00:51:00Hope.
00:51:02You gave me hope,
00:51:03and it doesn't seem fair
00:51:04to sell it to everyone else
00:51:05and give it to me for free.
00:51:11Let's see
00:51:12how many memories
00:51:13this computer holds,
00:51:14shall we?
00:51:15Isn't this sweatshirt
00:51:16a little large for you?
00:51:19It was...
00:51:20Dad, Dad,
00:51:24guess what I won!
00:51:24A million dollars.
00:51:27I got honorable mention
00:51:28in the essay contest
00:51:29at school today.
00:51:30You didn't get anything.
00:51:32Yes, I did.
00:51:33Look,
00:51:33it says it right here.
00:51:34Why'd you do that?
00:51:55Because it says you lost.
00:51:57What do you want
00:51:58from a piece of paper
00:51:59that constantly reminds you
00:52:00that you didn't come in first?
00:52:01That's not what it said, Dad.
00:52:03That's exactly what it said.
00:52:04You lost.
00:52:08Is that how you're gonna
00:52:09live your life, Eve?
00:52:10Happy to lose?
00:52:12Proud to cry?
00:52:13You better toughen up,
00:52:15little girl.
00:52:16Life is hard,
00:52:18and nobody's gonna
00:52:19give you anything.
00:52:21You take what you want,
00:52:23and you don't let anybody
00:52:24get in your way.
00:52:24You understand me?
00:52:26Good girl.
00:52:28Discipline, Eve.
00:52:30Determination and discipline.
00:52:32You build your life
00:52:33around those principles,
00:52:34there's nothing you can't do.
00:52:35Eve.
00:52:53Eve.
00:52:54You all right?
00:52:56Yeah.
00:52:57Good.
00:52:57You're just telling me
00:53:02who this fabulously
00:53:03large sweatshirt belongs to.
00:53:04You zoned out.
00:53:05It was my father's.
00:53:07I had this flash of memory.
00:53:10He was a Marine.
00:53:12He's dead now.
00:53:14I'm sorry.
00:53:16Do you remember anything else?
00:53:19No, I just remembered
00:53:20seeing him in it,
00:53:21and it made me wonder
00:53:23why I kept it.
00:53:24Did you like him?
00:53:29Mike?
00:53:30I don't know
00:53:31how to answer that.
00:53:34I'm sure I loved him.
00:53:37He was a proud man
00:53:38who undoubtedly
00:53:40made me what I am today.
00:53:43No, not today.
00:53:46Maybe he made you
00:53:47what you were yesterday,
00:53:48but not today.
00:53:51You know,
00:53:51I don't understand
00:53:52how I can get these
00:53:53isolated flashes
00:53:54of memory
00:53:56and then
00:53:56not remember anything else.
00:54:00Yeah, I know.
00:54:00The brain's funny
00:54:01that way, isn't it?
00:54:02It's like
00:54:03something simple
00:54:05like a smell
00:54:06can trigger a memory
00:54:07that you just can't
00:54:08recall any other way.
00:54:21Did that trigger anything?
00:54:22I'm remembering
00:54:25remembering how
00:54:26I wanted you
00:54:26to kiss me
00:54:27at the station.
00:54:38Like that.
00:54:39Like that.
00:54:39looks like somebody's home.
00:55:03I can hear you
00:55:20I can hear your breathing
00:55:22I feel you are my creation
00:55:26You rose out of the fog
00:55:33I shivered you softly blow on my skin
00:55:39I was sinking in icy waters
00:55:46I had sabotaged my own life
00:55:52Will you be there when I open up my eyes?
00:55:58Is this moment real?
00:56:06Oh, yeah
00:56:12He's with that damn dog
00:56:22Just ignore him, he always does that one
00:56:24Wait a minute
00:56:27Somebody's here
00:56:30Dog barks when somebody's here
00:56:33Get your stuff
00:56:34Go, go, go
00:56:35Get your stuff
00:56:36Let's go
00:56:36Let's go
00:57:06Let's go
00:57:36They're gone
00:57:40No, they're not
00:57:43You hear that dog barking?
00:57:44Any ideas?
00:58:08Well, she survived the crash
00:58:11Maybe the camera did too
00:58:13We've got to go to the police on this
00:58:20No, I can't
00:58:21I mean, for all I know, those guys are cops
00:58:23Those guys are gonna kill us
00:58:24They're gonna shoot us
00:58:25What can the police do?
00:58:26What can the police do?
00:58:26I don't know how to answer any of their questions about who they are or why they want to kill me
00:58:31The police can protect you
00:58:33No, no, no, no, I don't believe that
00:58:34It would be a hell of a lot easier for them to find us under police protection
00:58:37You're the only one
00:58:39You're the only one I can trust right now
00:58:40You're serious?
00:58:49Okay
00:58:49We'll do this alone
00:58:53Are you sure that you cannot remember those guys with the suits and the guns any time at all before the gas station?
00:59:00I told you no
00:59:01I...I...I climbed up the cliff and walked to the gas...
00:59:06Wait a minute
00:59:09I do remember something
00:59:11I remember the two guys looking over the cliff down at the burning car
00:59:32I couldn't see their faces, but they had guns
00:59:36That's it, that's gotta be it
00:59:38They saw you then and they've followed you since
00:59:41Why didn't they just kill me then?
00:59:42I don't know
00:59:43Nah, I doubt it
00:59:44It had something to do with the crash
00:59:46It wasn't you
00:59:52No, what?
00:59:55What are you talking about?
00:59:57Business card, I...
00:59:58I didn't get it from you
01:00:00Business card?
01:00:06That seminar is actually at 7 o'clock tonight at the airport hotel
01:00:09And I wrote all the information on the back of the card
01:00:12Thanks, Pam
01:00:13So are you gonna do that hidden camera thing again?
01:00:17That's the plan
01:00:18I think I have enough footage already
01:00:20But I don't want to get his reaction when I bust him on the $25 PhD certificate in front of his group of gullible idiots
01:00:26Sweet
01:00:26Oh, and Mr. Hoffman stepped in a few minutes ago
01:00:29Thank you
01:00:31You're welcome
01:00:32You're welcome
01:00:32Hey, hey
01:00:51That looked a little too friendly
01:00:54Don't get paranoid on me, alright
01:00:56Just walk with me
01:00:57There's a nutjob who lives halfway across the state
01:01:01Some kind of inventor
01:01:02This place looks like a junkyard
01:01:04All kinds of weird contraptions
01:01:06Anyway, I want you to do a piece on him
01:01:08Like the Rube Goldberg thing
01:01:09You know, eccentric, toiling away in solitude
01:01:11Building a better mousetrap for humanity
01:01:13Blah, blah, blah
01:01:13I need to fill her piece to close out my Friday at 5pm news
01:01:17Something light, funny
01:01:18What happened to City Hall?
01:01:19City Hall's not going anywhere
01:01:21This is something I need now
01:01:22You lied to me, Bob
01:01:23I didn't lie to you, Eve
01:01:25I told you what you wanted to hear
01:01:27There's a big difference
01:01:28Oh, really?
01:01:29Well, I didn't lie to you about being such a great lover
01:01:31I just told you what you wanted to hear
01:01:32Don't bust my chops this early
01:01:37I was late last night, getting home
01:01:39Linda, oh
01:01:40Do your job, Eve, right?
01:01:49Alice is waiting for you down at the moment
01:01:50Bob, you can order me to do any piece you want
01:01:53You're my boss, I get that
01:01:54As far as sleeping with you goes
01:01:56I'm a big girl, I can handle the consequences
01:01:58But don't think for a second
01:01:59Walking into the men's bathroom
01:02:01Is going to shut me down
01:02:02Are you finished?
01:02:05Yes, I am
01:02:06Good
01:02:07Would you please go make this guy look
01:02:10Like a crackpot, right?
01:02:12Something everyone can laugh at
01:02:14Over beers at the corner bar on a Friday night
01:02:16You know the drill
01:02:17The way he humiliates better than you
01:02:19This does not mean city hall's off the table
01:02:21What about CBS anchor Connie Chung?
01:02:46What about Connie Chung?
01:02:47She never did this crap
01:02:49She went straight from college to a local desk job
01:02:52Well, let's see
01:02:53She was beautiful, exotic, and smart as hell
01:02:57What, are you saying I'm not exotic?
01:03:01Oh god, I gotta stop drinking so much coffee
01:03:03Maybe she slept with the news director at her station
01:03:06What is bugging you this morning?
01:03:10We were supposed to meet for drinks last night
01:03:12Well, I'm sorry
01:03:14I was going over a piece about city hall with Bob
01:03:16It couldn't be helped
01:03:17I'm sure you were going over a piece
01:03:19Just finish fixing your hair and break out your hatchet
01:03:21Three, two, one
01:03:38I'm Eve Pretzen with KQAP News
01:03:42At the home of inventor Ned Larfield
01:03:44Who is on the quest to build a better mousetrap
01:03:47Actually, I'm more concerned with global warming than mousetraps
01:03:50And why is that, Ned?
01:03:52Well
01:03:52Doesn't global warming affect mice, too?
01:03:54Yes, ma'am, it sure does
01:03:56Perhaps we could have a look at some of your inventions
01:03:58This one looks fascinating
01:04:00What does it do?
01:04:01Well, now
01:04:02This isn't a working prototype
01:04:05It's a physical model
01:04:06Used to give proximity to variables in solar calibrations
01:04:10I see
01:04:11How do you drive it without wheels?
01:04:15Well, it's not designed to drive
01:04:17A car not designed to drive
01:04:19What a novel idea
01:04:21Now, don't look at this like it's a car
01:04:23In the context of today's conception of what a car is
01:04:27Think of it as a horse-drawn wagon
01:04:29Before the automobile as we know it was invented
01:04:32Okay, I'll go with that
01:04:34You see, a horse power in an engine
01:04:37Comes from the idea of power generated by horses
01:04:40One horse pulling a wagon was one horsepower
01:04:43Four horses pulling a wagon was four horsepower
01:04:46350 horses pulling a wagon would be 350 horsepower?
01:04:50Yeah
01:04:51Well, I mean, the 350 horses pulling a wagon isn't practical
01:04:56But the PRC, the power racial construct, certainly is
01:05:01Okay, but don't you need wheels no matter how many horses you use?
01:05:05Wheels?
01:05:06Oh, I see
01:05:07You're still thinking of this as a car
01:05:09This isn't a car
01:05:11It's not
01:05:13No, no, it's a, no
01:05:16It's a concept
01:05:19Like the horse-drawn wagon was a concept for the horseless wagon
01:05:23See, you have to think of these large panels as horses
01:05:27Okay, uh, what kind of horses, Ned?
01:05:30The kind of horses don't matter
01:05:32It's just the representational value I'm equating the panels to in terms of creating energy for an automobile
01:05:38It's not feasible for 350 horses to pull a wagon now, is it?
01:05:44I wouldn't think so
01:05:45That's the concept I'm working with
01:05:47You see, internal combustion engines are big and clumsy
01:05:50They waste a lot of energy just carrying their own weight
01:05:54Here, let me show you something
01:05:56I have a better example of how that mass-to-energy distribution ratio works over here
01:06:01What's this over here, Ned?
01:06:03Huh?
01:06:04Oh, that's nothing
01:06:06It's, it's just junk
01:06:08Never even made it to prototype
01:06:10I, uh, I think you'll, you'll find this device over here
01:06:17Quite fascinating
01:06:19And a little sexy
01:06:21This way
01:06:22This way, camera guy
01:06:29Watch the news on Friday evening and you'll see yourself on television
01:06:33I don't own a television
01:06:35That's great
01:06:46Once I edit out all that technical mumbo-jumbo, this guy's gonna be solid gold
01:06:50I don't own a television
01:07:20Oh my god
01:07:30Al is dead
01:07:32He must have died in the crash
01:07:35Um
01:07:40It, um, sounds like a miracle that you didn't
01:07:43We must have shot something out there that we weren't supposed to
01:07:47But I have no idea what it was
01:07:49We have to find that place, Harry
01:07:53Okay
01:07:54We have to talk to Ned Larfield and find out what it was
01:07:56Okay
01:07:57Do you remember how to get there?
01:08:01No, I...
01:08:03Let's find a coffee shop with internet access
01:08:07Okay
01:08:09Here you go
01:08:29Thanks, thanks
01:08:30Listen to this
01:08:31Listen to this
01:08:31M.I.T. professor and research scientist
01:08:33Ned Larfield resigned from his tenured position to retire in seclusion
01:08:37After his research partner Stephen Blakely was killed in a freak automobile accident
01:08:41It goes on with some gory details but it looks like Ned and his partner were working on alternatives to combustible engines
01:08:48As a way of combating global warming years before it was fashionable
01:08:52Doesn't sound threatening to anyone
01:08:54Except the gas and oil companies
01:08:55Except the gas and oil companies
01:08:57I don't think his partner's accident was any freakier than mine
01:08:59We need to find Ned Larfield's place
01:09:03We're in luck
01:09:04Finding people with my field of expertise
01:09:07We're in luck
01:09:08We're in luck
01:09:09We're in luck
01:09:10We're in luck
01:09:11We're in luck
01:09:12We're in luck
01:09:13We're in luck
01:09:14We're in luck
01:09:15We're in luck
01:09:16We're in luck
01:09:17We're in luck
01:09:18We're in luck
01:09:19We're in luck
01:09:20We're in luck
01:09:21We're in luck
01:09:22We're in luck
01:09:23We're in luck
01:09:24We're in luck
01:09:25We're in luck
01:09:26We're in luck
01:09:27We're in luck
01:09:28We're in luck
01:09:29We're in luck
01:09:30We're in luck
01:09:31We're in luck
01:09:32We're in luck
01:09:33We're in luck
01:09:34We're in luck
01:09:35We're in luck
01:09:36Oh, my God. They killed him.
01:09:40Along with everything else.
01:09:48Hal and I were just here yesterday.
01:09:50I remember it all, his crazy inventions.
01:09:52Don't. It's not safe.
01:09:54If they come back when we're out there,
01:09:56we're sitting ducks.
01:09:58This place is in the middle of nowhere.
01:10:00Two dead research scientists, secret inventions,
01:10:04hit men, car chases, a murdered cameraman.
01:10:07There's a hell of a story out here.
01:10:09Hell, it's even chasing me, and I can't find it.
01:10:11Some journalist.
01:10:12You're being a little hurting yourself, aren't you?
01:10:15Didn't even know your name a day ago.
01:10:17We both know what kind of journalist I am.
01:10:20Let's go back to Philly.
01:10:34Did you see someone?
01:10:38No, it's just, I don't want any surprises, that's all.
01:10:40Harry, you know, I'd be dead right now if it wasn't for you.
01:10:44I'm not so sure it's not the other way around.
01:10:48Sorry I got you into this.
01:10:51When we get back to Philly, we should go our separate ways.
01:10:54They're not after you.
01:10:56Appreciate that.
01:10:56But, uh, I think I'm going to stick around a little bit longer, okay?
01:11:00Besides, I'm a doctor, remember?
01:11:03You've had a nasty head injury.
01:11:04I need to keep you under observation.
01:11:10Oh, my God.
01:11:12What is it?
01:11:13Can I help you?
01:11:30You can fill it with regular and point me towards the ladies' room.
01:11:33They're at the back.
01:11:34He's in the office on the wall.
01:11:35Thanks.
01:11:36What's the matter?
01:11:43It's not right.
01:11:46You know that, don't you?
01:11:49Aw, jeez, Al, are you still pissed about last night?
01:11:51I'm talking about Ned Larfield.
01:11:53He's not a pom-pom prima donna.
01:11:54He's just an old man trying to make a difference.
01:11:56And if you ask me, he should be taken seriously.
01:11:59Come on, you saw the stuff that he was trying to put together.
01:12:01Please, I half expected to see a pair of hamsters under the hoods.
01:12:05Some journalist you are.
01:12:07What the hell is that supposed to mean?
01:12:09What you did out there isn't journalism.
01:12:11It's offensive.
01:12:12And what you plan on doing in that editing room is just downright criminal.
01:12:15I was given an assignment.
01:12:16My job is to give my boss what he wants.
01:12:18Yeah, well, you're real good at that, aren't you, Eve?
01:12:20Yeah, screw you, Al.
01:12:21No, thanks.
01:12:23Your dance card's a little too full for my taste.
01:12:26So I guess that means I'm looking for another cameraman.
01:12:30That's fine with me.
01:12:31I'd rather shoot weddings than watch you pretend to be a journalist.
01:12:35You want the receipt?
01:12:42Give it to the jackass in the bathroom.
01:12:44Screw you, I can edit this myself.
01:13:07Al's still alive.
01:13:14Police are still baffled by what they're calling a mob-style homicide.
01:13:22Former MIT professor Ned Larfield was found dead at his home yesterday.
01:13:28He was shot twice in the head, execution style, and his compound was incinerated.
01:13:33There are currently no suspects.
01:13:35It's not a related story.
01:13:37Police, where are you?
01:13:47Bob Huffman?
01:13:50Eve, where the hell are you?
01:13:52I'm driving back to Philly.
01:13:54I need to talk to Al right away.
01:13:55Forget it.
01:13:56He's not here.
01:13:56I mean, what the hell's going on?
01:13:58Look, I can't explain anything right now.
01:14:00I need to get a hold of Al now.
01:14:02You need to give me answers.
01:14:03I mean, the nut job got killed yesterday.
01:14:05Do you even know that?
01:14:06Well, yeah, I do now.
01:14:07Where's the footage?
01:14:09What the hell were you two doing out there?
01:14:11Yeah, you know what?
01:14:12Bob, don't even go there.
01:14:13What do you want me to think?
01:14:14I mean, people are dying out there, and my cameraman and reporter have got nothing.
01:14:18I mean, do you even talk to the guy?
01:14:19Yes, we got an interview, but I can't tell you anything right now.
01:14:22I need to get a hold of Al first.
01:14:23I mean, for all I know, he could be dead.
01:14:25He's not dead.
01:14:26How do you know?
01:14:28He left a message for you this morning.
01:14:30What did it say?
01:14:32Sorry, call me.
01:14:36What the hell were you two doing out there?
01:14:39What the hell is that other body?
01:14:41Well, maybe an animal ate it.
01:14:49Nice.
01:14:53What have we here?
01:14:55What the hell you got?
01:14:58You have five new messages.
01:15:00First message received yesterday at 12.01 p.m.
01:15:05All righty, I'm sorry.
01:15:06I didn't mean it.
01:15:07I was just jealous, okay?
01:15:08Get your lovely ass back down here to this godforsaken gas station and pick me up.
01:15:12Oh, and you can't edit without me.
01:15:14I pulled the P2.
01:15:15That means the woman, the cameraman, and the footage are all still out there.
01:15:23Let's go.
01:15:24Let's go.
01:15:34Hello?
01:15:35Eve, what the hell is going on?
01:15:37Al, thank God you're okay.
01:15:38Where are you?
01:15:39I was hiding out in a cheap motel after I heard someone killed Ned Larfield.
01:15:43I freaked, but I couldn't get you on your cell.
01:15:45They tried to kill me, too.
01:15:47They got the cell and the camera, but missed me.
01:15:49I think we shot something out there that we weren't supposed to.
01:15:52Oh, they didn't get the footage.
01:15:53I got the P2 right here.
01:15:55In the age of digital, a good cameraman always pockets his footage.
01:15:58Where are you now?
01:15:59I'm on my way to the bus station.
01:16:07Got a ping on his cell phone.
01:16:09Triangulating.
01:16:11It's about 20 miles from here.
01:16:13We'll meet you at the bus station.
01:16:16Bring the P2 card.
01:16:28It's heading west.
01:16:29It's about 20 miles from here.
01:16:33Oh, my God.
01:16:50Oh, that's it.
01:16:51Oh, Al.
01:17:07I thought they got you.
01:17:09You have the PT card?
01:17:11Yeah.
01:17:12Hi.
01:17:14I hear it.
01:17:14Al.
01:17:15Hi.
01:17:21I see.
01:17:32How do you drive it without wheels?
01:17:34Well, it's not designed to drive.
01:17:37A car not designed to drive?
01:17:39What a novel idea.
01:17:41This can't be it.
01:17:45What's this over here, Ned?
01:17:48Oh, that's nothing.
01:17:52It's just junk.
01:17:53Never even made it to prototype.
01:17:57I think you'll find this device over here.
01:18:00He was awful weird about that piece.
01:18:03It had a little sexy.
01:18:04Look at that.
01:18:05This way.
01:18:06The car.
01:18:07Is that all we have?
01:18:08No.
01:18:09I shot some of his stuff.
01:18:12Look at all that junk.
01:18:13White O's, uh, solar panels on the head.
01:18:18Oh, do you have anything else from inside the tent?
01:18:19Yeah.
01:18:29Wires, meters, more wires.
01:18:32It all looks the same to me.
01:18:33It's got to have something to do with that car.
01:18:39Wait a minute.
01:18:39What did he say earlier?
01:18:41It's a concept.
01:18:46Like the horse-drawn wagon was a concept for the horseless wagon.
01:18:50See, you have to think of these large panels as horses.
01:18:53He was talking about horsepower.
01:18:56And those panels supply power to the car.
01:18:59But he said it wasn't designed to drive.
01:19:01But this one was.
01:19:03Oh.
01:19:04Oh, that's nothing.
01:19:06It's just junk.
01:19:08Never even made it to prototype.
01:19:11Sure as hell looks like a prototype to me.
01:19:14That's here.
01:19:15It has to be.
01:19:17Look at the way he's hiding it.
01:19:17And a little sexy.
01:19:19This way.
01:19:23Look at the paint.
01:19:25Large silver patches in the exact same location as the panels on the other car.
01:19:32It's the paint.
01:19:34What?
01:19:35Look at the way the light hits the paint.
01:19:37You see it?
01:19:38Yeah, it's weird.
01:19:41Panels are horses.
01:19:44My God.
01:19:46It's solar.
01:19:47I think he invented a paint that acts as a solar panel.
01:19:51Is that possible?
01:19:53Listen, everything was impossible until someone did it for the first time.
01:19:57Watch out!
01:20:06What do we do now?
01:20:15You can object to a little police intervention now.
01:20:16No, I welcome it.
01:20:18Great.
01:20:18If I can get a strong enough signal, I can send this P2 clip to the station.
01:20:39Are you crazy?
01:20:39Harry, this is important.
01:20:42They killed Ned Larfield and that poor man at the gas station to keep this thing quiet.
01:20:46If I can't honor that, then I'm a fraud.
01:20:53Singal's too weak.
01:20:54I need to get closer.
01:20:57Good company on foot.
01:21:07All right, here's the plan.
01:21:09I'm gonna head that way.
01:21:10I'll draw their attention so you can get closer and be a reporter thing.
01:21:13Harriet, I don't know if this story's worth dying for.
01:21:17I'm going to come to work.
01:21:17And one of them is stupid.
01:21:38You don't know if this story starts to be audio.
01:22:12See the girl?
01:22:30No, but I'm sure they're still here.
01:22:42Tough guy.
01:23:01Where's your girlfriend?
01:23:02Are you all right?
01:23:16I've been better.
01:23:18Did you send it?
01:23:19I don't know if it went through.
01:23:21Too bad.
01:23:21Are you two all right?
01:23:28Man down.
01:23:28Man down.
01:23:33Go ahead, Jennifer.
01:23:34Go ahead.
01:23:34What are you doing?
01:23:37Not there.
01:23:37It's been said that genius is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration.
01:23:46If that's true, then Ned Larfield spent a lifetime sweating to make this world a better, cleaner, safer place for all of us.
01:23:54And what did it get him?
01:23:55I'm standing here on the burnt out area that used to be Ned Larfield's compound.
01:24:00The MIT professor and research scientist was murdered here a few days ago by a pair of hired killers.
01:24:07Hired by whom?
01:24:08We may never know.
01:24:10For the veils of corporate secrecy run thick and are guarded well.
01:24:13Some speculate that the motives for the killings was Larfield's invention of an alternative energy.
01:24:19All known evidence of this invention was thought to be destroyed.
01:24:23Although Larfield claims that he filed patent applications for all of his work,
01:24:27the U.S. Patent Office indicates that there is no record of such an application by Larfield.
01:24:32I had a chance to spend some time with this brilliant man just a few hours before he was killed.
01:24:37And in that time, Ned Larfield revealed a side to human nature that changed this reporter's life.
01:24:43For the better.
01:24:45Like most everybody, there's nothing I like more than the sound of a finely tuned engine.
01:24:51And I'll be the first to admit that gallon for gallon,
01:24:54gasoline is the hands-down queen of all liquid fuels.
01:24:58But the fact of the matter is,
01:25:01if you stand in a closed garage with any internal combustion engine running,
01:25:06it will kill you.
01:25:08Now consider the Earth and its atmosphere a huge closed garage.
01:25:13You get the same result.
01:25:17We may never know what Ned Larfield discovered out here on his isolated farm.
01:25:22But it's clear that in these troubled times,
01:25:24that this world needs more people like Ned.
01:25:27People who aren't afraid to fight for what's right,
01:25:29no matter what the cost.
01:25:30And in doing so, inspiring others to do the same.
01:25:34This is one reporter so inspired.
01:25:36Dave Pretzen with KQAP News.
01:25:47Well, don't forget your cameraman when the offers start flooding in.
01:25:50Not a chance, partner.
01:26:01Nice.
01:26:02That sounded like you were picking a fight.
01:26:04I hope so.
01:26:05Let's go back to the station.
01:26:14I have a little editing to do on a piece called The Doctor of Balance.
01:26:18Oh, I got a new title for that one?
01:26:22Doctor of No Balance.
01:26:23See you next time.
