00:00Bush fire season is officially here, with the first of many declarations arriving for the greater Darwin region this week.
00:09But it might not all be bad news.
00:12At this very early stage, and you can't predict the weather too early,
00:15but at this early stage there is an indication that potentially it'll be an earlier wet season,
00:19which hopefully will mean a shorter fire danger period for us in the top end.
00:24But they're not taking any chances.
00:27The Territory's fireys say landholders can do plenty to take action before it's too late.
00:33If they don't have their fire breaks in place yet, which they really should have,
00:36making sure that they get in place ASAP, making sure that their bushfire survival plans are in place,
00:42and that they've exercised them, make sure that they're still current,
00:45and make sure that their family members know what is involved in those bushfire survival plans.
00:49This week's declaration applies to the greater Darwin region,
00:52which stretches from Darwin down to Pine Creek, and from West Daly over to Kakadu.
00:58The Catherine region, which we also call the Savannah region,
01:01is currently being monitored, and we expect that that will be declared in the next few weeks.
01:05And the rest of the Territory isn't far behind.
01:08As the earth dries up and the wind rises, it's heavy fuel loads such as gambar grass,
01:13and other patches of dry flora like this, which have firefighters concerned.
01:17And with the abundance of gambar in the regions,
01:20some Territorians say the risks are greater than people realise.
01:24Gambar is a massive issue come fire season,
01:27so gambar burns four times higher and ten times hotter than the native grasses.
01:33A reminder to keep things under control as Territorians feel the heat.
01:38that the source of heat.
