00:10:33Oh, by the way, Ralph, I'm sort of getting a little party Saturday afternoon over at
00:11:01my grandmother's. You know, the place of the swimming pool? Like to come? Thanks, Eddie, maybe I will. I'd sure like to have you. Okay, I'll probably drop over. So long, Ralph. See you later. Hey, Ralph. Hi, kid. Fine, Jack, and you? Oh, great. Where you heading? Oh, hey, how do you like that? That's the one I was telling you about.
00:11:31Very nice.
00:11:35I don't know why you want to make such a fuss over that Ralph Wiley. Oh, he's a swell swimmer. He made the freshman team that year he went to college. Yeah, and that lets him out. My dad knows his family. None of them are any good. Father and mother just got a divorce from Paris. Yeah? You know, Ralph runs around pretty much in his own. He's been in a couple of games. Well, I only kind of say hello to him. I don't go around with him. Well, you better not. He's a little too old for us, especially my dad's kid.
00:12:00Hmm. Hello, Mary. How are you, Bill? How are you, Ralph? Oh, hello, Ralph. You know our brother Jimmy, don't you? How are you? Well, I'd like you to meet a friend of mine, Jack Perry. Mary, Bill, how are you? How do you do? Glad to know you. We're going over to Joe's place. Why don't you come along? We have a date to play instead of doubles. Oh, you can play anytime. Come on. We'll have some laughs. Oh, we can today, Ralph. Some other time. Can I go along with you? Sure. Hey, I'll see you at dinner, sis.
00:12:28Don't be late, Jimmy. Don't be late, Jimmy.
00:12:33Don't be late, Jimmy.
00:12:33Don't be late.
00:12:58Don't be late, Jimmy.
00:13:00Don't be late, Jimmy.
00:13:02Come on.
00:13:03Jimmy.
00:13:04Hi, there you go.
00:13:05Oh, there you go.
00:13:06Hey, he ain't no paperman.
00:13:08Why don't you know he's not a hot thing to tell me.
00:13:11Well, he really swings out all the way.
00:13:13You want to dance?
00:13:14George.
00:13:15Come on,делi.
00:13:36I'm expecting that could be a depart for a little later.
00:13:38Any new problemia?
00:13:40Maybe.
00:13:44The End
00:14:14Oh, Jimmy, you're wonderful.
00:14:41You're just finding out.
00:14:44Why can't we go now?
00:14:50Good.
00:14:52Hey, kids, we're having a little party up at my girlfriend's apartment.
00:14:55Wouldn't you like to come?
00:14:56Oh, I'd love to.
00:14:57You want to come, don't you, Jenny?
00:14:58Oh, sure.
00:15:00And they play with you.
00:15:01Well, come along.
00:15:02We can all go in my car.
00:15:09See you later, y'all.
00:15:10Come on.
00:15:11It's Lito here to help me, Bill.
00:15:28Well, I'll try anything except domestic science.
00:15:30Why, Bill, don't you want to learn something about running your own home?
00:15:34The answer is no.
00:15:36You know, after that session we had yesterday, I went home and told Mother that the trouble
00:15:40with her pot roast gravy was she hadn't added three heaping teaspoons of olive oil.
00:15:46What did she say?
00:15:48She didn't say anything.
00:15:49She just threw me out of the kitchen.
00:15:51Oh, I don't wonder.
00:15:52Hello, children.
00:15:53Hello, Mother.
00:15:54Hello, Mrs. Lane.
00:15:54That was sweet of you, Mother.
00:15:58Gosh, hot chocolate.
00:15:59Thanks, Mrs. Lane.
00:16:01I know you can't study on empty stomachs.
00:16:04Now then, enjoy yourselves.
00:16:05He will.
00:16:06She will, too, Mrs. Lane.
00:16:08May I?
00:16:09Oh, thank you, kind sir.
00:16:11You're so very, very kind.
00:16:15Now, before we do that math, how about reading some of this?
00:16:19It's swell.
00:16:20Romeo and Juliet.
00:16:21Don't you like it?
00:16:22Uh-huh.
00:16:22You know, when I study this, I kind of think of you, and I just sort of feel as though you're
00:16:28there beside me.
00:16:31Well, listen.
00:16:35It is my soul that calls upon thy name, how silver-sweet sound lovers' tongues by night,
00:16:45like softest music to attending ears.
00:16:50Romeo.
00:16:51Romeo.
00:16:52My dear.
00:16:53What o'clock tomorrow shall I send to thee?
00:16:57By the hour of nine.
00:16:59I will not fail.
00:17:01Just twenty years till then.
00:17:08Uh-oh.
00:17:09Well, uh, I'll see you tonight, Mary.
00:17:13Bye, Mrs. Lane.
00:17:14Goodbye, dear.
00:17:15Bye, bye.
00:17:25Bye.
00:17:26Bye.
00:17:26Bye.
00:17:27Hey, Daddy.
00:17:28Oh, gee.
00:17:31Hey.
00:17:35Hey, Dad, you got anything for me?
00:17:37Well, there should be...
00:17:38Don't bother your father every night.
00:17:40Uh, have you?
00:17:42There you are.
00:17:43Well, it made you so late, Bill.
00:17:45I was getting worried.
00:17:47Oh, I had to study, Ma.
00:17:48He was not.
00:17:50I saw him out walking with his girl.
00:17:53Bill's got a girl.
00:17:55Got a girl.
00:17:55Ma, make him cut it out.
00:17:57Junior.
00:17:59Well, Bill has got a girl.
00:18:00Quiet.
00:18:01And put that candy away until after dinner.
00:18:04Henry, you shouldn't have given it to him.
00:18:06Well, he has got a girlfriend, and her name is Mary.
00:18:09I'll shut you up.
00:18:12Bill, Junior, put that candy away on.
00:18:15Junior.
00:18:16Oh, that's a good number.
00:18:17Bill, right there, young.
00:18:19Mary's a little man.
00:18:20Mary's a little man.
00:18:21I didn't mean to Bill Ernest, did you?
00:18:24Oh, well, what I'm burnt up about is it just didn't say Bill had a swell girl.
00:18:29Gee, it must be love.
00:18:32She'd have to be swell for you to like her.
00:18:34Uh-huh.
00:18:35Sounds like you want something.
00:18:37Come on.
00:18:37What is it?
00:18:38Well, it's my model airplane.
00:18:41It won't work.
00:18:42Gosh, Bill, you can fix it.
00:18:45You can fix anything.
00:18:47Okay, I'll fix it.
00:18:51Hey, Dad, leave me for you, Mr. Booty.
00:18:53Go ahead.
00:18:54Here we go.
00:19:00Oh, hello.
00:19:01Jimmy.
00:19:01Mary told me to wait and tell her she had to go home.
00:19:06Her mother wanted her to go to the dressmaker with her.
00:19:08Oh, thanks, Jimmy.
00:19:09You must be getting grown up.
00:19:11I see Mary let you have the car.
00:19:13Yeah.
00:19:14Did I take any place?
00:19:15Well, I wasn't going any place in particular.
00:19:17Well, then, how about driving over to the show's place with me?
00:19:21I'll buy you a soda.
00:19:22I never drink this stuff.
00:19:24Well, gee, I'll buy you something else.
00:19:26Okay.
00:19:27You're on the hook for one rude beer.
00:19:29Well, I don't know.
00:19:39Hi, Bill.
00:19:43Hi, Jimmy.
00:19:44Oh, yeah.
00:19:44Hey, Jimmy.
00:19:47Hello, Jimmy.
00:19:48Hello, Bill.
00:19:49Come on, fly it in.
00:19:50Hello, Lance.
00:19:51Hello, Ralph.
00:19:52How are you?
00:19:52Hello, Lance.
00:19:52How have you been, Ralph?
00:19:53Hello, Jim.
00:19:54Two silver.
00:19:54Oh, I mean one silver and one rope beer.
00:19:56How's May?
00:19:58Oh, she's fine.
00:19:59We're going up to a problem with them later.
00:20:01Couldn't Bill come along?
00:20:02Mm-hmm.
00:20:03Well, don't you?
00:20:03Oh, come on, Alon.
00:20:04Bill, you'll get a kick out of it.
00:20:06Thanks, just the same.
00:20:07Oh, come on, Bill.
00:20:08Mary won't be jealous.
00:20:10Why, sure.
00:20:10A lot of the kids will be there.
00:20:12It's James.
00:20:13Well, I don't know.
00:20:13I really shouldn't have.
00:20:15Well, okay.
00:20:26Hiya, Jim.
00:20:43Hello, Jack.
00:20:44What do you think?
00:20:45Come on, Jim.
00:20:46Yeah, come on in.
00:20:47Oh, Jim.
00:20:49Hiya, Mr. Lee.
00:20:52Don't stand there.
00:20:56Come on, Bill.
00:20:57Don't stand there.
00:20:59Help me, help me, help me.
00:21:00Help me, help me.
00:21:01Help me, help me.

00:21:09Help me.
00:21:10Hiya.
00:21:11Oh, I'm Amy.
00:21:12This is Bill Harper.
00:21:13He's okay.
00:21:14Oh.
00:21:15Well, if you think so.
00:21:17He's all right with me.
00:21:19I'll be back in a minute.
00:21:20Hiya, Mr. Lee.
00:21:21I'll be back in a minute.
00:21:22Hiya, Mr. Gibbs.
00:21:23How are you doing?
00:21:24Good.
00:21:25Hi, Ray.
00:21:28There's a new one in the bay.
00:21:30Yeah.
00:21:31Bill Harper.
00:21:32He's all right.
00:21:34Blanche has done herself quite a year for her.
00:21:36She's not bad.
00:21:37I didn't think she had that much taste.
00:21:39She knows what she's doing.
00:21:41She's got Ralph nuts about her, and now she's got her hooked up with this new kid.
00:21:45Say, we haven't many more smoke.
00:21:47You'd better run over and get some.
00:21:49Why couldn't you find that out when I was here this morning?
00:21:52I've got my car in the car.
00:21:54Well, what of it?
00:21:55That kid out there, Jimmy, he's got a car.
00:21:58He'll take it.
00:21:59Come on, get going.
00:22:00Hurry up.
00:22:01Hey, Jimmy.
00:22:02Yeah?
00:22:03I've got to run over to Cedar Avenue for a minute.
00:22:04You've got a car, haven't you?
00:22:05Why, yeah.
00:22:06My sister.
00:22:07Mind giving me a lift?
00:22:08Why, sure.
00:22:09Come on.
00:22:10Okay.
00:22:11Now, thank you.
00:22:12I'm the one.
00:22:13You've got to come.
00:22:14I'm the one.
00:22:15I've got to run over to Cedar Avenue for a minute.
00:22:16You've got a car, haven't you?
00:22:17Why, yeah.
00:22:18I'm a sister.
00:22:19Mind giving me a lift?
00:22:20Why, sure.
00:22:21Come on.
00:22:22Okay.
00:22:40No, thank you.
00:22:45Well, here we are.
00:22:46Oh, thanks.
00:22:49Oh, Mae, don't forget to eat.
00:22:52I'll never forget you.
00:22:57Oh, dear.
00:22:58If you want a good smoke, try one of these.
00:23:19I thought you were a bird.
00:23:22I can't just hear a face.
00:23:29That's better.
00:23:30That's more like it.
00:23:31I know you'll like that.
00:23:32Really, you will.
00:23:33Now, just take a puff of that.
00:23:35Just be a minute, kid.
00:23:36Hey, Jack, give me a cigarette before you go, will you?
00:23:45Just be a minute, kid.
00:23:46Hey, Jack, give me a cigarette before you go, will you?
00:23:57right before you go, will ya?
00:24:20Hello, Jack.
00:24:21Hiya, boss.
00:24:24How's business?
00:24:25Getting better every day.
00:24:27Those kids sure go for it.
00:24:28Swell.
00:24:29Head run over for a couple more cars.
00:24:31Ran short today.
00:24:32Alright.
00:24:34Danny?
00:24:35Got ten gloves for Jack Perry.
00:24:38Who?
00:24:39Pete Daly.
00:24:41Alright, send him in.
00:24:42Alright, here we are.
00:24:50I wanna talk to you.
00:24:53Alright, go ahead. Jack's okay.
00:24:55What's the beat?
00:24:57Listen, you never heard no beef when I had to sell that rotten gin.
00:25:00You're after the dough, aren't you?
00:25:02Yeah, but I don't need dough that bad.
00:25:04Taking two-bit pieces from kids.
00:25:06There are millions of two-bit pieces just begging to be taken.
00:25:09Don't be a dope.
00:25:10No.
00:25:10I'm just dope enough to draw the line, selling hop to kids.
00:25:16Alright, Pete.
00:25:17You know what my policy's always been.
00:25:19The boys are not satisfied, and I'm always glad to have them retire.
00:25:25Retire permanently.
00:25:27So long.
00:25:39I only wish you had a couple of kids, so I could...
00:25:42Get out!
00:25:43Alright, Jack, pick up your stuff from Danny.
00:25:48I'll be ready by now.
00:25:49Okay, well.
00:25:50Let's go, Jack.
00:25:51I'm red hot.
00:25:52Better be careful how you drive it.
00:25:53The first thing you know, you'll be ice cold.
00:25:54Take it easy, kid.
00:26:17Take it easy, kid.
00:26:20Get ready so fast.
00:26:21Go down, you'll kill somebody.
00:26:24Go down, you'll kill somebody.
00:26:49Mary, you're not eating your breakfast again.
00:26:54Bill Hartford hasn't been around lately.
00:26:56Anything wrong between you two?
00:26:58Why should there be anything wrong?
00:27:01There shouldn't be, I'm sure.
00:27:03And whatever it is isn't serious, I know.
00:27:06I'm sorry, Mother, for snapping at you like that.
00:27:09Don't worry about it, dear.
00:27:11Why don't you speak frankly to Bill?
00:27:14He'll be honest, whatever the trouble is.
00:27:16I'm sure Bill Hartford never lied about anything.
00:27:19Yes, that's right.
00:27:21Bill's mother says he never lied.
00:27:23There, you see?
00:27:24You think it'd be all right if I speak to him about it?
00:27:27Why, of course.
00:27:30Oh, Jimmy.
00:27:33Well, look.
00:27:34Sit down, darling, and I'll have your breakfast for you in a moment.
00:27:43Jimmy.
00:27:44What have I got to worry about?
00:27:46Why don't you tell me?
00:27:47Well, for Pete's sake, don't start to cross-examine me, will you?
00:27:49I'm all right.
00:27:50Jimmy!
00:27:51Don't let Mother see you like that.
00:27:53There is no doubt that there is an organized gang distributing the narcotic to students, not only in my school, but all over the city.
00:28:08You government men have got to find some way to put an end to it.
00:28:09Of course, I agree with you, Dr. Carroll.
00:28:11But do you realize that marijuana is not like other forms of dope?
00:28:15You see, it grows wild in almost every state in the Union.
00:28:17Therefore, there is practically no interstate commerce in the drug.
00:28:22As the result, the government's hands are tied.
00:28:25And frankly, the only cure cure is a widespread campaign in education.
00:28:30Oh, it's all right to talk about education, Mr. Wyatt.
00:28:32Look, it's very good.
00:28:33This is just a thing that we have to do so.
00:28:34And while it's not a drug, it's very good.
00:28:35It's very good to say, if you don't know what we're trying to imagine, I think.
00:28:39I don't know much, but as much as much as we're working, you know, just start to read it out.
00:28:42Of course, I agree with you, Dr. Carroll.
00:28:44But do you realize that marijuana is not like other forms of dope?
00:28:47You see, it grows wild in almost every state in the union.
00:28:51Therefore, there is practically no interstate commerce in the drug.
00:28:52But we educators can't do anything until the public is sufficiently aroused.
00:28:56Let me show you something.
00:28:58In 1930, the records on marijuana in the Washington office of the narcotics division scarcely filled a small folder like this.
00:29:06Today, they fill cabinets.
00:29:13All these devoted to marijuana records.
00:29:17Here is an example.
00:29:22A 16-year-old lad apprehended in the act of staging a holdup.
00:29:2716 years old and a marijuana addict.
00:29:30Here is the most tragic case.
00:29:33Yes, I remember. Just a young boy.
00:29:36Under the influence of the drug, he killed his entire family with an accident.
00:29:41Then there is the most vicious type of case.
00:29:44Here. In Michigan.
00:29:47A young girl, 17 years old.
00:29:49A reefer smoker.
00:29:50Taken in a raid in a company with five young men.
00:29:53Here is a particularly flagrant case.
00:29:56Yes, I remember. The newspapers made quite a play of it.
00:29:59In West Virginia, wasn't it?
00:30:01Yes.
00:30:02And there are hundreds of them coming up. New ones every day.
00:30:05I'd like to take these records, if I may.
00:30:08I feel they would be of invaluable assistance to me in combating the evil in my school.
00:30:13You're very welcome, Dr. Carroll. Thank you.
00:30:20Sit down, Bill.
00:30:24There seems to be something wrong.
00:30:26What is it?
00:30:27You were always a fine student.
00:30:30You always had excellent grades.
00:30:32Well, I guess the work is getting a little harder, Dr. Carroll.
00:30:36No.
00:30:37No, it isn't that.
00:30:39Bill, I'd like to help you.
00:30:41But, of course, I can't unless you let me.
00:30:43You're undermining your health.
00:30:45Well, there's nothing, Dr. Carroll, really there isn't.
00:30:48I'll study harder, honest.
00:30:51Honest?
00:30:52If you were being honest with me and honest with yourself,
00:30:55I'm afraid you'd tell me an entirely different story.
00:31:02Bill, I'm going to ask you a straightforward question.
00:31:05And I'd like to have a straightforward answer.
00:31:08Yes, sir.
00:31:10Isn't it true that you have, perhaps unwillingly,
00:31:13acquired a certain harmful habit through association with certain others?
00:31:18undesirable people.
00:31:23Well?
00:31:24Oh, no, sir.
00:31:25I haven't, Dr. Carroll.
00:31:26Well, that is, you...
00:31:28You see, I'm...
00:31:30I'm worried about something at home.
00:31:33All right, my boy.
00:31:34We'll just have to let it go at that.
00:31:37But remember,
00:31:38if you ever want to confide in me,
00:31:40no one will ever be the wiser.
00:31:42Well, thank you, Dr. Carroll.
00:31:48Hello, Mary.
00:31:49You want to play a set?
00:31:50Thanks, Teddy.
00:31:51But I'm waiting for someone.
00:31:52Well, if you're waiting for Bill,
00:31:53he hasn't been here for weeks.
00:31:54Ow!
00:32:00Come on.
00:32:03Come on, Jimmy.
00:32:05Please, let me.
00:32:06Okay.
00:32:19It didn't take that new kid long to catch on, huh?
00:32:43Don't take any of them long.
00:32:49Hey, don't you ever get fed.
00:32:52You're beating me, can't you see?
00:33:00Give me that little fork, will you?
00:33:02Get it yourself.
00:33:19Oh, come on, Bill.
00:33:26Come on.
00:33:28Come on.
00:33:29Come on.
00:33:31Come on.
00:33:34Come on.
00:33:37Come on, Bill. Come on. Come on. Come on, Bill. Come on. Come on.
00:34:07Good morning, Miss. We're from the police department. Good morning. We're tracing a hit and run driver.
00:34:36Someone caught the license number at the place of the accident but didn't get it quite right.
00:34:40So we're checking all numbers like it, and yours was one of them.
00:34:42Well, I'll try to help you.
00:34:43Do you remember what you did on the 29th of last month?
00:34:46Oh, that was the day before Mother's birthday.
00:34:49Oh, yes, I remember that because I left school and went directly to the dressmakers with Mother.
00:34:53I was there all afternoon.
00:34:55Did you happen to loan your car to a couple of men?
00:34:58No, no. I had the car all afternoon myself.
00:35:01Well, thanks, Miss. Sorry to have troubled you.
00:35:03Well, tell me, did they... was the person killed?
00:35:07Fortunately, he wasn't, but that's still no excuse for hitting around driving.
00:35:10Has Jimmy Lane been here today?
00:35:27He was in. He went over to May's place.
00:35:30You know where that is.
00:35:32Well, uh, he was going to wait for me here, so he didn't give me May's address.
00:35:39Are you sure Jimmy didn't leave any message for me?
00:35:41Mary?
00:35:45No, he didn't.
00:35:48But I guess you're okay.
00:35:51I'll write it down for you.
00:35:52Mary, come right in.
00:36:10Is Jimmy here?
00:36:11Oh, I think he's around somewhere.
00:36:12I think he went out to take Agnes home, but he'll be right back.
00:36:17Come in and sit down, Mary.
00:36:19And let me take your coat.
00:36:20Come in.
00:36:23Who's the new kid just came in?
00:36:33Well, it's that gal that Ralph's gone overboard for.
00:36:36It's funny.
00:36:37We've never been able to get her up here before.
00:36:45Hey.
00:36:46Hey.
00:36:47Scramble ya.
00:36:50Smoke, Mary?
00:37:17Thanks.
00:37:19Are you sure Jimmy will be back soon?
00:37:21Sure.
00:37:21Any minute.
00:37:22You're so close!
00:37:23Anybody?
00:37:23Oh, my God.
00:37:25Come on.
00:37:26We'll be right.
00:37:35We'll be right.
00:38:09Hey, what's the matter, an orphan?
00:38:34Where do you put it?
00:38:35You got a hollow leg?
00:38:39How do you feel, Mary?
00:38:48Oh, Mary, give me that.
00:38:50Don't.
00:38:50Don't.
00:38:53Please help me.
00:38:54Oh, Mary.
00:38:56No.
00:38:58Leave me alone.
00:39:00Leave me alone.
00:39:04Go away.
00:39:05I don't want to.
00:39:06You won't.
00:39:11You won't.
00:39:15I'll hold you alone.
00:39:17I'll hold you alone.
00:39:20Everything's off.
00:39:21Everything!
00:39:22Everything!
00:39:22I
00:39:52Oh, my God.
00:40:22Bill!
00:40:32Bill!
00:40:33Look!
00:40:34Jack, is she all right?
00:40:40She's dead.
00:40:50Hey, get me some water.
00:40:57Now listen, you two.
00:41:00Why don't you get out of here?
00:41:01Get out of here and forget you were ever in here today.
00:41:03I'll handle this.
00:41:04I'll get going.
00:41:19Give it to me.
00:41:20Give it to me.
00:41:50Give it to me.
00:41:56Mary.
00:41:58Mary.
00:42:02What happened?
00:42:04You killed her.
00:42:05Mary.
00:42:07Mary.
00:42:11Mary.
00:42:12Mary.
00:42:12Mary.
00:42:13Mary.
00:42:14Mary.
00:42:15Mary.
00:42:19Mary.
00:42:20Mary.
00:42:21Mary.
00:42:22Mary.
00:42:23Mary.
00:42:24Mary.
00:42:25Mary.
00:42:26Mary.
00:42:27Mary.
00:42:28Mary.
00:42:29Mary.
00:42:30Mary.
00:42:31Mary.
00:42:32Mary.
00:42:33Mary.
00:42:34Mary.
00:42:35Just stick to that story.
00:42:36Mary.
00:42:37Mary.
00:42:38Mary.
00:42:39Mary.
00:42:40Mary.
00:42:41Mary.
00:42:42Mary.
00:42:43Mary.
00:42:44Mary.
00:42:45Mary.
00:42:46Mary.
00:42:47Mary.
00:42:48Mary.
00:42:49Mary.
00:42:50Mary.
00:42:51Mary.
00:42:52Mary.
00:42:53Mary.
00:42:54Mary.
00:42:55Mary.
00:42:56Mary.
00:42:57Mary.
00:42:58Mary.
00:42:59Mary.
00:43:00Mary.
00:43:01Mary.
00:43:02Mary.
00:43:03Mary.
00:43:04Mary.
00:43:05Mary.
00:43:06Mary.
00:43:07Mary.
00:43:08Mary.
00:43:09Mary.
00:43:10Mary.
00:43:11Mary.
00:43:12Mary.
00:43:13Mary.
00:43:14Mary.
00:43:15Mary.
00:43:16Mary.
00:43:17Mary.
00:43:18Mary.
00:43:19Mary.
00:43:20Mary.
00:43:21Mary.
00:43:22Mary.
00:43:23Mary.
00:43:24Mary.
00:43:25Mary.
00:43:26Mary.
00:43:27Mary.
00:43:28Mary.
00:43:29Mary.
00:43:30Mary.
00:43:31But
00:43:36Died you didn't know I didn't crack
00:43:44Nobody don't ever know you were driving that car thanks
00:43:49That's as long as you keep your mouth shut that you're ever up in May's apartment. Why sure Jack sure
00:43:57Okay
00:44:01You
00:44:07Your Honor I'd like to recall dr. Alfred Carroll to the stand all dr. Alfred Carroll to the stand
00:44:26Dr. Carroll as principal of the Lakeside High School
00:44:29Did you during the last three months notice any changes in the demeanor and attitude of your student William Harper?
00:44:35Yes
00:44:37In a number of things
00:44:39For example a times disassociation
00:44:42of ideas
00:44:44In
00:44:46In a another instance I happen to attend the recent interscholastic tennis matches and while Bill Harper had been considered an exceedingly good player I
00:44:56I saw him miss the ball by as much as three or four feet
00:45:00This I understand could be attributed to the use of marijuana
00:45:04It causes errors in time space
00:45:07Objection your honor
00:45:09The witness has been qualified to express opinions upon the effect of narcotics
00:45:13Sustained
00:45:14Dr. Carroll has been called merely as a character witness
00:45:17Well then although you didn't know
00:45:20To your own knowledge that the defendant was using marijuana
00:45:23Did you notice any changes that would lead you to believe as an educator that he was under some severe mental strain
00:45:31Which might possibly have been induced by some drugs
00:45:33Yes
00:45:35I recall distinctly a few weeks ago
00:45:38It was during a class of English literature
00:45:41There was a serious discussion of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet
00:45:45When he suddenly burst into an uncontrollable fit of hysterical love
00:45:50Oh by the way Dr. Carroll
00:45:52Six months ago what would have been your opinion regarding the character of Mike Lyon?
00:45:57He was a fine upstanding American boy
00:46:01A good scholar
00:46:02A good athlete
00:46:03And representative of the caliber of young men
00:46:06We are proud to graduate from our school
00:46:16Oh snap out of him will you
00:46:18It's not our fault
00:46:22Why did I ever bring him up there anyway?
00:46:24He's just a kid
00:46:26I can't hang him
00:46:28I can't hang him
00:46:29Shut up! Shut up!
00:46:30Shut up!
00:46:31Why don't you let yourself go?
00:46:33Talk!
00:46:34Go off and say nothing and have me that way too
00:46:37It was his own fault wasn't it?
00:46:39Shut up!
00:46:40They've got us hidden out haven't they?
00:46:42The cops can't find us
00:46:44Jack
00:46:45Jack I want to get out of this place
00:46:49I want to get out of this place
00:46:52You're gonna stay here as long as we have to keep those two out there undercover
00:46:57Until the trial's over
00:46:59The boss gets a better idea
00:47:02But they're getting on my nerves
00:47:04It can't last much longer
00:47:08I'm not worried about her
00:47:09We gotta keep him gagged
00:47:11He's about ready to crack
00:47:14What you gotta do is keep him from having too many reefers
00:47:17Any day now that punk will get hot
00:47:19He'll probably spill until all he knows if he gets a chance
00:47:27I don't think you'll get it
00:47:32I'll see you later
00:47:33Where are you going?
00:47:35I'm gonna see the boss
00:47:50Hello Jack
00:47:51Hello boss
00:47:57What are we gonna do about that wily guy?
00:47:59Still jittery huh?
00:48:00Still jittery huh?
00:48:02I don't know what the punk's gonna do
00:48:03He's cleaning those hot sticks
00:48:05That's what May's been doing
00:48:06That's no good
00:48:09I got a hunch that he's due to crack when that Harper verdict comes in
00:48:13He's on the T
00:48:15He's gonna have to take a pot on us and blow his topper to the DA
00:48:18You mean you think we'd all be better off if he never heard the verdict?
00:48:26Well
00:48:28What are you waiting for?
00:48:30You ladies and gentlemen of the jury
00:48:44Have a duty to perform
00:48:46A duty to yourselves
00:48:48And to our community
00:48:50Mayor Elaine is dead
00:48:51The evidence you've heard of this trial
00:48:56Could not have failed to convince you of the guilt of the defendant
00:49:01By his own admission
00:49:03He pressed the trigger of the weapon that sent lovely and innocent Mary Lane to a tragic and untimely death
00:49:09We're not so much concerned about the motive behind the deed as to the deed itself
00:49:18While the defendant has told you that he saw someone attacking Mary Lane
00:49:22And that his mind went blank from that moment on
00:49:25And that his mind went blank from that moment on
00:49:27The defense has been unable to produce one witness to substantiate that statement
00:49:32Now ladies and gentlemen of the jury
00:49:35Now ladies and gentlemen of the jury
00:49:36You've heard able men testify at this trial
00:49:40Men who have tried to bring out the fact
00:49:42That the defendant might have become momentarily insane
00:49:45When he fired the shot that killed Mary Lane
00:49:49But the defense has been unable to prove that he was insane
00:49:53William Harper was sane when he visited the apartment where the tragedy occurred
00:49:58He was in the habit of visiting the place
00:50:01He was sane when he went into a bedroom with another young woman
00:50:03You've all heard what went on in that room
00:50:06You've heard it from the defendant's own lips
00:50:09Involved as he was in a tawdry love affair
00:50:13Mary Lane was in the way
00:50:15She had found him out
00:50:17In a moment of anger
00:50:20He deliberately and willfully killed her
00:50:23If such deeds are permitted to go unpunished
00:50:26This community would cease to be a decent and safe place for us or our children to live
00:50:31I do not believe I have to plead or even demand
00:50:36That you bring in a verdict to punish the defendant for the crime that he has committed against society
00:50:42You are upright citizens
00:50:45That is why you were chosen to judge another
00:50:48And as honest, upright citizens
00:50:51There is only one verdict which you can find
00:50:54And that is a verdict of guilty
00:50:57Guilty
00:51:00And this court will be adjourned until the jury's verdict is reached
00:51:12I suppose you all feel the same about this case
00:51:14But he might have been insane when he did it
00:51:23No, he wasn't. He knew what he was doing
00:51:31But supposing he was insane
00:51:33You can never make me believe it or anybody else
00:51:36We'll take a first vote
00:51:44Eleven for conviction, one for acquittal
00:52:01But there's a reasonable doubt about the boy's sanity
00:52:04We can't...
00:52:05No doubt about the fact that he murdered her
00:52:07He admitted it himself
00:52:09That wasn't the first time he was there
00:52:14We've got to make an example
00:52:24Before boys like that contaminate all of our children
00:52:26We can't have every murderer hiding behind the gag that he's insane
00:52:30Sure they see red before they kill somebody
00:52:33But whose fault is it?
00:52:44I've got to make an example here
00:52:46Good girl, you won't take a look of every child
00:52:48I never know
00:52:50I'm sorry, I'll take a look of every child
00:52:52You'll give me a thought
00:52:54Of the other one
00:52:56I'll take a look of every child
00:52:57I'm sorry, it'll see you
00:52:59You're all right
00:53:01I'm sorry...
00:53:03For the next few minutes
00:53:05I'm sorry, I'll take that off
00:53:07I've made the next few minutes
00:53:09I'll take that one
00:53:10I'll take that one
00:53:12I'll take that one
00:53:14Have you reached the verdict we have the defendant will rise
00:53:29What is your verdict you find the defendant guilty is charged
00:53:34Oh
00:54:04I
00:54:06I
00:54:34Stop it
00:54:36What's the matter with you?
00:54:38The creeps
00:54:46Mace
00:54:48Mace!
00:54:49What do you want?
00:54:51Bring me some reefers
00:55:01They're going to take it
00:55:03Blanche!
00:55:04Blanche!
00:55:05They're going to hang you!
00:55:07Oh, come on!
00:55:08Get a hold of yourself!
00:55:12Here you are!
00:55:14And cut that crazy laughing
00:55:17Where's Jack?
00:55:18Jack!
00:55:19Jack!
00:55:20I want to get out of here!
00:55:21They'll pick you up and hang you if you don't pipe down!
00:55:22I want to see Jack!
00:55:25Jack!
00:55:27I want to see Jack!
00:55:30Jack!
00:55:31Jack!
00:55:32You better cry at him!
00:55:34I can't do anything with him!
00:55:37I've got to see Jack!
00:55:38We can't let that kid hanged!
00:55:41He'll be here!
00:55:42Don't worry!
00:55:43He'll be here!
00:55:44Don't worry!
00:55:45He'll be here in a little while!
00:55:46I've got to see him!
00:55:47You've got to see him!
00:55:49Oh!
00:55:51I've got to see him!
00:55:54Harry's got to see him!
00:55:56Licks.
00:55:57He'll be here!
00:55:58Don't worry!
00:55:59He'll be here in a little while!
00:56:02I've got to see him!
00:56:03You've got to see him.
00:56:04I've got to see him.
00:56:23Come on darling, everything will be over soon.
00:56:29You want me to play something for you?
00:56:31Yeah, that's it. Play something.
00:56:34All right. Come on.
00:56:45Honey, give me a smoke will you?
00:57:01Come on.
00:57:17Master.
00:57:20Master!
00:57:21Play, Master.
00:57:25Play, Master.
00:57:31Master.

01:00:43If we can gain some measure of leniency from my client, she is prepared to enter a plea of guilty and, in addition, turn to state evidence in the case of William Harper.
01:01:02I regret that this court is not prepared to bargain with justice.
01:01:06I'll tell anyway. I was there. I thought.
01:01:09I know who killed Mary, and I'll tell you who killed Mary Lane. It wasn't Bill. It was Jack. Jack Perry. He shot Mary, and then he put the gun in Bill's hand.
01:01:21We were all at the department one afternoon, and Mary came in looking for her brother. Bill and I, we'd been in another room.
01:01:30And Bill came in. He caught Ralph with Mary, and they started to fight. But it was Jack who had the gun. He was going to hit Bill over the head with us to make him stop.
01:01:39And then, then the gun went off. I saw it. I can see it now. It was horrible.
01:01:48And before he knew it, Mary, Mary was there.
01:01:55But you see, Judge, Bill didn't know he hadn't killed Mary. He was so doped up, they made him think he had.
01:02:07Ralph wanted to tell you, too. Oh, if they don't live at him.
01:02:13But this is the truth, Judge. I'm telling you the truth.
01:02:16After Jack saw the story, he was dead. He put the gun in Bill's hand.
01:02:24It was Jack's fault. And it was my fault, too.
01:02:30I got all over to come up to the apartment.
01:02:34I'm just as much to break.
01:02:38I am.
01:02:38Do I understand you wish to plead guilty to a charge of fostering moral delinquency in the case of William Harper?
01:02:49Yes, yes, I'm guilty. I am.
01:02:54Prepare a statement for signature.
01:02:56And also an order setting aside the jury's verdict in the case of the people versus William Harper.
01:03:02In the interest of justice, I shall direct the verdict of not guilty.
01:03:22Sign here, please.
01:03:32You shall be brought into court on Thursday, the 17th, when sentence will be pronounced.
01:03:49Meanwhile, you will be held as a material witness in the case of the people versus Ralph Wiley.
01:04:02Nazisman Hubert.
01:04:23Please, stop.
01:04:25Let's go.
01:04:27Give me somebody.
01:04:30THE END
01:05:00We have come in the hearings before this court today to what I hope will be the final actions revolving about an unhappy and unfortunate case,
01:05:24one whose horrible tragedy will forever remain with me.
01:05:31I am happy to have been enabled, before it was too late, to order the verdict of the jury in the case of the people versus William Harper to be set aside.
01:05:40But, young man, although this court is convinced that to declare you guilty would have been a gross miscarriage of justice,
01:05:49we cannot condone your acts.
01:05:53And we can express only the hope that your experiences may not alone keep you,
01:05:58but thousands of others from the vicious pitfalls of marijuana.
01:06:04Thus, I am ordering you to remain in this court during the next case,
01:06:08so that you will be obliged to witness what you yourself so narrowly escaped.
01:06:14Call the case of the people versus Ralph Wiley.
01:06:22Bill.
01:06:25Bill.
01:06:26Bill.
01:06:26Your Honor, in this case, the state waived trial of the defendant, Ralph Wiley.
01:06:50It is convinced that he is hopelessly and incurably insane, a condition caused by the drug marijuana to which he was addicted.
01:06:58It is recommended, Your Honor, that the defendant be placed in an institution for the criminally insane for the rest of his natural life.
01:07:06Defendant, counsel, joins the state in this request.
01:07:10Since counsel for the defense, as well as counsel for the state, seem to agree on this,
01:07:15I see no reason why the request should not be granted.
01:07:18Yes, that happened right here, to your neighbors.
01:07:26It is not too much to say that in your hands lies the possibility of averting other tragedies like it.
01:07:33We must work untiringly so that our children are obliged to learn the truth,
01:07:38because it is only through knowledge that we can safely protect them.
01:07:43Failing this, the next tragedy may be that of your daughter,
01:07:49or your son,
01:07:51or yours,
01:07:53or yours,
01:07:54or yours.
01:07:56The End
01:08:11THE END
