00:10Scientists say the whales take bull kelp from the sea floor,
00:13find a partner and roll it between their bodies.
00:16According to research published in the journal Current Biology,
00:19it's a practice among killer whales that could be a form of grooming for skin hygiene
00:23or a way to socially bond with other members of the pod.
00:26Documented via drone in the Salish Sea in the Pacific Northwest,
00:29the discovery marks the first time marine mammals have ever been seen using a tool to groom.
00:35Scientists recorded at least 30 examples of the whale on whale ritual,
00:39with some orcas seen rubbing against each other for 15 minutes at a time.
00:43They say the behavior is usually spotted in whales that are close relatives or close in age.
