00:00:00The Poets Would Have Called The Place Pastoral, The Day Tranquil.
00:00:20For Leslyn Stearns and her husband Norman, it was another day in a cross-country tour.
00:00:35But as they entered the Ozark Plateau, an ominous feeling invaded the privacy of the car, a feeling
00:00:44that intensified with each turn in the winding highway.
00:00:57There were reassurances from time to time, usually in the form of some familiar landmark.
00:01:05But soon these were behind them, and then it began to rain.
00:01:29There is a legend in these hills that when it rains and sun shines at the same time, the
00:01:36devil is kissing his wife.
00:01:39And speaking of the devil, look Norman, an exclamation at something out of time, out of place.
00:01:53Then a simple request to explore another in the strange oddities that dot the roadside
00:01:58of a thousand highways, oddities that beckon the traveler to stop and see.
00:02:06But Terra knows no time or place, and jeopardy can hide behind gentle rain or shine.
00:02:20And if Norman Stearns had known what danger lay, screened by an Ozark forest, he never would
00:02:32have left the highway.
00:02:35I bought you in南 of.
00:02:48There was one here.
00:03:57I'd like to get this windshield.
00:04:06You've made it worse.
00:04:11We're almost out of gas.
00:04:14We could at least have been in Los Angeles by now.
00:05:35Keep up.
00:05:41Can I do anything for you?
00:05:44Go ahead.
00:05:45It's hot out here.
00:05:47Yes, it is.
00:05:52I wonder if you could tell me where this road leads.
00:05:58Doesn't lead much anywhere, as far as I can tell.
00:06:01According to the map it should take us right into Wilson National Park.
00:06:03National Park. Not on any map I've ever seen. You must have turned off about 10 miles too soon.
00:06:12Fine. We're lost. I hope you're satisfied. My name is Wayne Thomas. Can I be of any help?
00:06:19I don't suppose you have any spare gasoline. No, I, not really, but there's a farmhouse three or
00:06:25four miles up the road who might be able to give you a little supply. Would you like a drink?
00:06:28Oh, yeah.
00:06:33Thank you, Mr. Thomas. Sorry to have troubled you. No trouble at all. I'm glad to have been
00:06:40at help. Thank you. Are you sure you have enough gas to get there? We'll make it.
00:07:03Clara, what are you doing out of your cage? I might have stepped on you.
00:07:15Clara, what are you doing out of your cage? I might have stepped on you.
00:07:27You know better than that. I have a good mind to put you to bed without your supper. How'd you get out?
00:07:41So that's it. So that's it. Let your cage door open.
00:08:11What can I do for you? We're almost out of gas. Have you got any? No, no. My drum's empty.
00:08:40The truck was due yesterday, but it didn't come. Well, you must have some. A little. Enough to get us back to the highway at least.
00:08:48I'm sorry. Truck ought to be here in a minute, though. Why don't you come inside? It's cooler.
00:08:56Well, we may as well. I don't suppose there's any way of knowing when the truck will get here.
00:09:02Nah. Where are you folks from? New York. My wife's fond of traveling by car. Unhurried excursions along the scenic byways.
00:09:13We were on our way to Wilson Park. We took the wrong turn.
00:09:21You know, sometimes people do that. They may end up here.
00:09:25But I can't keep you waiting here. Come inside.
00:09:28Look, can we telephone to make sure it's on its way? We're in a hurry.
00:09:33Come on.
00:09:33What's the step? Is somebody looking for you? I mean, somebody that might be worried.
00:09:49No, we don't know anybody out here. I just don't want to waste any more time.
00:09:53I see. I don't have a telephone.
00:09:55But don't worry. You'll like it here.
00:09:56You folks go over to the parlor.
00:10:19Why don't you make yourself at home?
00:10:21I'll help my housekeeper make some iced tea.
00:10:24Bella?
00:10:26Bella!
00:10:26I'm going to never around whenever I need her. Pardon me.
00:10:47What's the matter with you?
00:10:50I don't know.
00:10:52It's sort of strange.
00:10:54This house way out here.
00:10:57And that man.
00:10:59And eccentric.
00:11:00Obviously a recluse.
00:11:02Nothing so strange in that.
00:11:05Did you see his eyes?
00:11:08They were like a...
00:11:12Norman, I don't like this place.
00:11:22Well, we're stuck here.
00:11:25And there's nothing to do about it.
00:11:28Except wait.
00:11:29I hope this teaches you a lesson.
00:11:38I offered to take you to the Bahamas.
00:11:42But no.
00:11:43You insisted on...
00:11:45Norman, Norman.
00:11:46I've lived all my life in New York.
00:11:49I've always wanted to see the rest of the country.
00:11:58Not just the big cities, but towns and villages.
00:12:07People that live there.
00:12:09I don't suppose you understand.
00:12:16I don't suppose you understand.
00:12:16So there you are.
00:12:29Hiding, aren't you?
00:12:32Get up.
00:12:35I saw them coming.
00:12:38I know what you're going to do, but don't make me help.
00:12:41Shut up.
00:12:41Shut up.
00:12:42I don't thank you.
00:12:45I've done everything you've asked of me.
00:12:47Everything, but not this.
00:12:48Hello.
00:12:48No.
00:12:50There's nothing to see them.
00:12:52And talk to them.
00:12:54And know what you're going to do.
00:12:56Ah!
00:12:57No.
00:12:59No.
00:13:03Now.
00:13:06You will go into that kitchen.
00:13:08And get them something to eat and drink while I'm in their car.
00:13:12And you will keep your big mouth shut.
00:13:30Someone got it.
00:13:32Hurry.
00:13:33Do like I can.
00:13:34Oh!
00:13:34And remember, if they get scared and run away, you'll take their place.
00:13:43Go!
00:13:43Go!
00:13:43Hello.
00:13:53I was just wondering if they made it.
00:14:06What do you mean?
00:14:07Well, they were having a little gas problem.
00:14:09Oh, yeah. Do you know them?
00:14:12Well, we sort of met up the road a little while back.
00:14:16I see.
00:14:18Is there something wrong with the car?
00:14:19Yeah, it won't start.
00:14:20What seems to be the trouble?
00:14:23I don't know.
00:14:25Do you know anything about cars?
00:14:27Well, a little. I'll take a look at it.
00:14:30I've got a screwdriver in the front of my Jeep. Would you get it for me?
00:14:33Yeah.
00:14:37Thank you. Just put it down here.
00:14:58Can I get you something else?
00:15:07Would you open the drapes?
00:15:27I'm sorry.
00:15:28I can't. Mr. Grevy doesn't like it.
00:15:31Well, Mr. Grevy will have to make an exception, I'm afraid.
00:15:34Oh, no.
00:15:41There. That's better.
00:15:43It's like a tomb in here.
00:15:46My wife was getting nervous.
00:15:48I'm sure Mr. Grevy won't mind.
00:15:50Just for a while, we'll tell him we did it.
00:15:56Why did you come here?
00:15:57What?
00:16:01What do you mean?
00:16:03What are you talking about?
00:16:05What's the matter with you?
00:16:14Norman, let's get out of here.
00:16:16We can wait in the car.
00:16:18Any place but in here.
00:16:20Is everything all right?
00:16:21I'm sorry I was so long, but I had some chores to do.
00:16:26I don't suppose that truck is here yet.
00:16:28No.
00:16:30I'm afraid we can't wait any longer.
00:16:32We have to be going.
00:16:34Where would you go?
00:16:37Remember, Mr. Thomas?
00:16:39Oh, we met a young man earlier back down the road, and he offered to help us.
00:16:44Oh, I was going to tell you about him.
00:16:46He was here while I was outside.
00:16:49What?
00:16:49Yes.
00:16:50Well, where is he?
00:16:51We can get a ride back with him.
00:16:53He's being very helpful.
00:16:54He's going back into town.
00:16:56He said he would have some gasoline and sit back out to you.
00:16:59He's gone?
00:17:02Yes, but he should be back soon.
00:17:08Oh, we can wait in the car.
00:17:10It's rather stuffy in here.
00:17:12I'll tell you what.
00:17:14If you want to go outside, why don't you let me show you my collection?
00:17:18Oh, well, I don't think...
00:17:20Well, why not?
00:17:21You're the one who was so anxious to get out of here.
00:17:24I wish you would.
00:17:26I'm rather proud of it.
00:17:29Come along.
00:17:31After all, you were the one who wanted to see some wild life.
00:17:35This may be the only opportunity you'll get.
00:17:38Come this way.
00:17:43Did you capture all of these yourself?
00:18:00Yeah, it's my hobby.
00:18:03Oh, look at his arm.
00:18:06Rather a dangerous one, isn't it?
00:18:08Living so far from hell.
00:18:11In case you were bitten, I mean.
00:18:14No.
00:18:15Over the years, I've built up a resistance to their poison.
00:18:19Besides, these animals like me.
00:18:21They know I feed them.
00:18:24Oh.
00:18:24But you ain't seen my prize.
00:18:38The best part of my collection.
00:18:39Let's have a look.
00:18:50I'd rather not throw in.
00:18:52What nonsense.
00:18:53It won't take a minute.
00:18:55Will it?
00:18:56It'll be over before you know it.
00:18:59Oh!
00:19:00Oh, God.
00:19:09Oh, God.
00:19:10Oh, God.
00:19:10Oh, God.
00:19:10Oh, God.
00:19:10Oh, God.
00:19:11Oh, God.
00:19:11Oh, God.
00:19:12Oh, God.
00:19:13Oh, God.
00:19:14Oh, God.
00:19:14Oh, God.
00:19:14Oh, God.
00:19:14Oh, God.
00:19:15Oh, God.
00:19:15Oh, God.
00:19:15Oh, God.
00:19:16Oh, God.
00:19:16Oh, God.
00:19:16Oh, God.
00:19:17Oh, God.
00:19:17Oh, God.
00:19:18Oh, God.
00:19:18Oh, God.
00:19:19Oh, God.
00:19:19Oh, God.
00:19:20Oh, God.
00:19:20Oh, God.
00:19:21Oh, God.
00:19:21Oh, God.
00:19:22Oh, God.
00:19:22Oh, God.
00:19:23Oh, God.
00:19:23Oh, God.
00:19:24Oh, God.
00:19:25Oh, God.
00:19:25Oh, God.
00:19:26Oh, God.
00:20:09I can't see.
00:20:33Hey, we really can't see anything in here.
00:20:37Isn't there a light in here?
00:20:38Wait, I'll turn it on.
00:20:44I spent everything I had long enough to leave the terrace.
00:20:48They bypassed it to the new freeway.
00:20:53You folks wait here and I'll go turn the lights on for the rest of the cave.
00:20:59What kind of place is this?
00:21:01Looks like someone lives here.
00:21:11Norman, let's get out of here, please.
00:21:13Leslie, for heaven's sake.
00:21:14Oh, well, I'm going to go back and wait in the car.
00:21:21Norman!
00:21:21Grievy.
00:21:23Grievy, open this door immediately.
00:21:27Grievy.
00:21:29Come back.
00:21:30I'll give you whatever you want.
00:21:32Grievy, you won't get away with this.
00:21:34The man's insane.
00:21:44He's out of his mind.
00:21:45I told you.
00:21:48I knew it the minute I saw him.
00:21:50You told me.
00:21:52I should never have listened to you in the first place.
00:21:55You and your fool motions.
00:21:57Traveling across country in an automobile like a couple of poverty-stricken gypsies.
00:22:02Stopping in every white spot town we come to.
00:22:06Sleeping in motels, eating truck stop garbage.
00:22:12This room wasn't intended just for us.
00:22:19There have been others here.
00:22:23What do you suppose happened to them?
00:22:26How should I know?
00:22:27Maybe they're still here.
00:22:32Why don't you eat?
00:23:00I'm not hungry.
00:23:02You're wasteful.
00:23:04That's a sin here in the mountains.
00:23:06You know that.
00:23:08Everything is used again and again.
00:23:12Even when it rains, a drop of water falls from the sky and a plant catches it.
00:23:18An insect eats the plant and it falls prey to a lizard.
00:23:23A snake devours the lizard and his blood quenches the thirst of a hawk.
00:23:28So you see that little drop of water sustains life in one animal after another.
00:23:34You see each animal is served by another.
00:23:38Each must serve his turn.
00:23:40A human being is not an animal.
00:23:43Who can tell?
00:23:44You can't.
00:23:45That's why you have no right doing the horrible things that you do.
00:23:48A man has a right to protect himself.
00:23:49Love with the lives of others.
00:23:52How many others?
00:23:53Shut up!
00:23:54How many have there been?
00:23:56Three.
00:23:56I can't.
00:23:57How many before that?
00:23:58Shut up, I tell you.
00:23:59Just be glad I spared you.
00:24:01Oh, sometimes I wish you hadn't.
00:24:03Oh?
00:24:06I said it didn't mean that.
00:24:11Sometimes you annoy me, Bella.
00:24:14You make me real mad.
00:24:18I'm sorry.
00:24:21Now go into that kitchen and get some food for those folks.
00:24:24Oh, no.
00:24:25By the way, take enough for three in case the other one is still alive.
00:24:43How long have you been here?
00:24:46Where is here?
00:24:47We're in a cave behind Mr. Greedy's zoo.
00:24:51Oh, yeah.
00:24:53I don't remember.
00:24:53It was me, look at this.
00:24:56Look at, no, it was your car.
00:24:59Yes.
00:25:00He must have hit you and dragged you in here.
00:25:04Why would he do that?
00:25:05Frankly, I was hoping you could tell us.
00:25:09Looks like we're prisoners here.
00:25:13We're prisoners.
00:25:16Oh, my.
00:25:17It gives a hit on the head, but everything's a little nuts.
00:25:20Hey!
00:25:21There's a tunnel down here.
00:25:22It goes almost straight down.
00:25:25That madman must have thrown you down there while you were unconscious.
00:25:30It was dark.
00:25:33I heard voices.
00:25:34I crawled to the sound of voices.
00:25:39That's all I remember.
00:25:41Did you see anything while you were down there?
00:25:45No.
00:25:45It was just dark, I think.
00:25:46I was pretty groggy.
00:25:48We could go down and look.
00:25:50Why?
00:25:50So we can fall and break our necks?
00:25:54Wait.
00:25:55Someone's coming.
00:25:56I brought you something to eat.
00:26:11That tunnel, where does it leave?
00:26:15The house.
00:26:17Cellar of the house.
00:26:18Oh, but Mr. Grevy keeps it locked.
00:26:22Where is Grevy?
00:26:23I want to see him at once.
00:26:25Well, answer me.
00:26:27You could both go to jail for this, you know.
00:26:29Norman.
00:26:31Norman, let me talk to her.
00:26:36What's your name?
00:26:39Bella.
00:26:39Bella Pittman.
00:26:43I'm sure all this isn't your fault, Miss Pittman.
00:26:47Oh, no.
00:26:49Oh, no, it isn't.
00:26:51Miss Pittman, could you please...
00:26:52There's never been three before.
00:26:56You said there'd be three.
00:26:59Miss Pittman, could you please tell us what this is all about?
00:27:02Oh, I couldn't.
00:27:05Can you help us?
00:27:06Is there a way out of here?
00:27:08Oh, I'd like to help you.
00:27:13I'd like to.
00:27:16Oh, but I can't.
00:27:18Why?
00:27:20Because...
00:27:21Because then he'd let it have me.
00:27:26Yes.
00:27:29And then...
00:27:31Oh!
00:27:34Oh!
00:27:36What?
00:27:36I've got to go.
00:27:39Mrs. Pittman,
00:27:41could you please at least leave us to Leonard?
00:27:44Yes.
00:27:44We'll need it.
00:27:45Please.
00:27:47Please.
00:27:48Please.
00:27:58Poor woman.
00:28:00Oh, wow.
00:28:03She's fighting to death, Mr. Grievy.
00:28:05And at the thing, whatever that is.
00:28:09She said Grievy would give her to in if she tried to help him.
00:28:13Rubbish.
00:28:14Obviously, she's in on it, too.
00:28:16In on what?
00:28:17On a plot to frighten us, so they can bleed us of every scent we've got.
00:28:20I may account for you, Mr. Stearns, but they don't stand to make too much off an assistant professor of paleontology.
00:28:25You just stumbled into it because you happened to have seen us come here.
00:28:30Maybe.
00:28:31Maybe so.
00:28:35You're not going down there.
00:28:37There's something down there.
00:28:38I want to find out what it is.
00:28:39You actually take this thing business seriously, don't you?
00:28:44Well, I don't know.
00:28:45You may have a python or an anaconda or something.
00:28:47Besides, there may be a chance to get...
00:28:49Look, I'll tell you one thing.
00:28:50That woman was genuinely scared.
00:28:52She was.
00:28:53She really was.
00:28:55I might be able to find a way out of here.
00:28:58There's no point in you both going with me.
00:28:59It's okay.
00:29:00Certainly not.
00:29:01If I find anything, I'll be right back.
00:29:05I doubt very much if...
00:29:08What?
00:29:09What is it?
00:29:10A small little boy.
00:29:13You see?
00:29:15Well, it would be foolish to go any further into the cliff.
00:29:19Well, then you can wait here alone.
00:29:31Well, it's slippery.
00:29:53It seems hotter down here.
00:29:58Listen.
00:30:01What is it?
00:30:03It sounds like water.
00:30:05But this water, that could mean a way out of here.
00:30:08Good Lord.
00:30:10Look at this.
00:30:31I'm going to find out where that water leads to.
00:30:46Please be careful.
00:30:49By all means, we'd hate to lose you.
00:30:53But I'm afraid you will, if he goes down there.
00:30:59You once told me that you were a...
00:31:02What was the word you...
00:31:04Paleontologist.
00:31:06Yeah.
00:31:07A study of things that were old.
00:31:09Very old.
00:31:10Perhaps you know of my creature.
00:31:13It's great and powerful.
00:31:16My greatest discovery.
00:31:19I'd like to see it.
00:31:20You will.
00:31:23Don't worry.
00:31:25Look, why don't you exhibit it?
00:31:27You exhibit the rest of your creatures.
00:31:29Why don't you exhibit this, too?
00:31:32Yes.
00:31:33All you need is publicity.
00:31:36Advertising.
00:31:37I'll pay for it.
00:31:40Why, people will come from all over the world to see the thing.
00:31:44You'll be famous.
00:31:45Stop it, stop it, stop it!
00:31:48You still don't believe.
00:31:50You're making fun of me, aren't you?
00:31:54Miss Stern.
00:31:56You're a very pretty woman.
00:31:59If you like, I might decide to take you out of here.
00:32:05No.
00:32:05Do what he says.
00:32:07It's our only chance.
00:32:09Norman.
00:32:09Don't be a fool.
00:32:11You're the only one who can save us.
00:32:13Look, why don't you share your discovery with the world?
00:32:17Why don't you let us help you?
00:32:20Help me?
00:32:22You fools.
00:32:24First, see if you can help yourself.
00:32:27Wayne!
00:32:29Damn you!
00:32:35Wayne!
00:32:36The gun!
00:32:36Don't let him get the gun.
00:32:38Keep it, Ben.
00:32:39Keep it!
00:32:41It won't do you any good!
00:32:43Ha, ha, ha, ha!
00:32:44Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!
00:32:46Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!
00:32:49Oh, let me see.
00:32:50All right.
00:32:51Oh, you're bleeding.
00:32:52Let me try and stop him.
00:32:54Not the wind at me, huh?
00:32:55Oh, boy.
00:32:57I guess he got away.
00:32:59And thanks to you, he isn't likely to be back.
00:33:02Well, at least he offered himself to say this instead of just me.
00:33:06Oh, I expected you to be impressed.
00:33:08Oh, Lord, you know, I never realized before what my value to you was.
00:33:17I know you told me earlier today, but I didn't want to believe it.
00:33:22Well, now I know.
00:33:25I know how much I mean to you.
00:33:28And it isn't enough.
00:33:31That sounds rather final, my dear.
00:33:36It was meant to be.
00:33:39I see.
00:33:42I think I'll have a look below.
00:33:45It's not very professional, but at least it stops bleeding.
00:33:59Wayne!
00:34:02I think I've found a way out.
00:34:05Come on down and have a look.
00:34:07What is it?
00:34:08I think I've found a way out.
00:34:10Come on down and have a look.
00:34:12What is it?
00:34:13Come on down and have a look.
00:34:14What is it?
00:34:15I think I've found a way out.
00:34:16I think I've found a way out.
00:34:17I think I've found a way out.
00:34:24Come on down and have a look.
00:34:25I think I've found a way out.
00:34:26What is it?
00:34:27What is it?
00:34:28What is it?
00:34:29What is it?
00:34:30What is it?
00:34:30What is it?
00:34:31I think I've found a way out.
00:34:32What is it?
00:34:33What is it?
00:34:38Where is it?
00:34:47Stearns, you better get back up here.
00:34:52Why?
00:34:56Get back!
00:35:08Help me!
00:35:18No, no, hold me!
00:35:26Hold me!
00:35:29Help me!
00:35:33Help me!
00:35:35Help me!
00:35:37Help me!
00:35:39Help me!
00:35:53It's all. It's gone now.
00:35:59God! How did that?
00:36:01It was...
00:36:03It was there.
00:36:05I am not going mad.
00:36:07If you are, we both are.
00:36:09That's impossible.
00:36:11There's nothing like that for millions of years.
00:36:13But it was there.
00:36:15It was real.
00:36:17It was alive.
00:36:29You are dead!
00:36:31I am not...
00:36:45Wayne...
00:36:49Wayne...
00:36:51What was it?
00:36:53It was impossible.
00:36:57And so was what we saw.
00:37:01The only thing I've seen are drawings, fossils, prints.
00:37:06What it looked like was a Massasaurus, which was a kind of aquatic lizard.
00:37:13The most successful of its kind could be 40 or 50 feet tall.
00:37:18There were hundreds of them, around here, 75 million years ago.
00:37:23But how? I mean, I don't understand.
00:37:27I don't know. We talk a lot about suspended animation.
00:37:32I've heard of suspended animation.
00:37:34The art of slowing down the aging process.
00:37:37Maybe through some freak of nature, it's already happened here.
00:37:46What should we do?
00:37:48Let's go back up to the room.
00:37:50Okay.
00:37:57Let's go.
00:37:58Let's go.
00:37:59Let's go.
00:38:00Let's go.
00:38:02Let's go.
00:38:03Let's go.
00:38:04Come on.
00:38:05Let's go.
00:38:06Let's go.
00:38:07Let's go.
00:38:08Let's go.
00:38:10You're going to the next.
00:38:12Oh my God.
00:38:15Well, where have you been?
00:38:16Where have you been?
00:38:17Now, where have you been? Where have you been?
00:38:23You've been downstairs, haven't you?
00:38:28Yes, but I didn't do anything.
00:38:31That's funny. You've always hated what's down there.
00:38:35Maybe you're changing. Maybe you're beginning to like it.
00:38:37Oh, no. No, I swear to you. I just wanted to see you.
00:38:42If our friends were still alive, and were they?
00:38:46Young man. The lady.
00:38:50What about Stearns? Was he there?
00:38:53I'm glad you're beginning to take an interest in these things.
00:38:58Because you know what will happen.
00:39:00Oh, please. Oh, please. Please don't be angry.
00:39:09You're the man, darling. It's getting late.
00:39:12Go on!
00:39:16Go on.
00:39:19Apparently there you go.
00:39:20What's going on?
00:39:38You want some coffee?
00:40:05Miss Pittman brought it.
00:40:06She went back to get some bandages, change her dressing.
00:40:17Miss Pitman?
00:40:36Ricky, do you know the significance of what you've got down there?
00:40:40So now you do believe?
00:40:42Yes.
00:40:44Isn't it a magnificent creature?
00:40:47Where did you find it? Where did you...
00:40:50Would you really like to know?
00:40:52Oh, any scientist would give his life to discover something like that.
00:40:56Since that's what's about to happen, I'll tell you.
00:41:01I came here several years ago looking for gold.
00:41:06And I found it, some, before he was taken from me.
00:41:11One morning I dug through to a cavern.
00:41:16And then I found there was something down there, something alive.
00:41:21I decided to make it my friend.
00:41:24I brought it food, cattle, sheep, sometimes a coyote that I'd catch.
00:41:30And then one day, a stranger came trying to find what I had in the cave.
00:41:37He found it.
00:41:40Or rather it found him.
00:41:43I chose those who couldn't be traced.
00:41:46Those whose families and friends thought they'd been swallowed up.
00:41:50That's you're human.
00:41:54You're human? I offered to save you, didn't I?
00:41:57I meant what I said last night.
00:42:01I think you'd find life out here better than there.
00:42:05No.
00:42:07If it's Bella you're worried about.
00:42:10I have ways of taking care of her.
00:42:13No!
00:42:15It's your choice.
00:42:18You can have a little while longer to make up your mind.
00:42:26Greedy!
00:42:28Just for one second try and think like a scientist.
00:42:31Do you realize the value of your discovery for mankind?
00:42:34Mankind?
00:42:36When I care about mankind!
00:42:38When I care about mankind!
00:42:39When I care about mankind!
00:42:43There was just something I could use as a lever or a rammer.
00:43:02Oh, why bother?
00:43:06He's armed and we're not.
00:43:08Yeah.
00:43:09Oh, don't you go getting discouraged on me.
00:43:12I'm counting on you to keep my spirits up.
00:43:17Mr. Thomas.
00:43:18Mr. Thomas.
00:43:19I brought you some bandages.
00:43:23Oh, thanks, Mrs. Pittman.
00:43:26I...
00:43:27I heard you talking a moment ago.
00:43:29And I heard what he said about me.
00:43:31And I'll help you now.
00:43:36If I can.
00:43:37Please.
00:43:38Sit down.
00:43:39Please.
00:43:43How did you get into this?
00:43:48Oh, I was like you once.
00:43:52It seems so long ago.
00:44:01It seems like an eternity.
00:44:12But really this nightmare began just...
00:44:15Just two years ago.
00:44:18It was the last day of a well-earned vacation.
00:44:21The day was almost gone and I was shopping for a place to spend the night.
00:44:24Only another school teacher could know what I mean by shopping.
00:44:30Because only she would know that...
00:44:33That we must stretch the pennies until fall rolls around.
00:44:37The luxury motels are out of the question.
00:44:40Teachers...
00:44:41Well, they don't have fancy credit cards and expense accounts.
00:44:46Suddenly I...
00:44:47I found the town behind me and...
00:44:49And I realized I must...
00:44:51I must try to make the next community.
00:44:54Oh.
00:44:56That was the biggest mistake I ever made.
00:45:19You look great, the town behind me and...
00:45:22Not in the middle of a place.
00:45:24And they'll be, you know...
00:45:27No.
00:45:29Oh.
00:45:30Oh.
00:45:33Oh.
00:45:34Oh.
00:45:36Oh.
00:45:38Oh.
00:45:47Oh.
00:45:48Well, it may be hard for you to believe, but he actually looked kind that first time I saw him.
00:46:05Just like any other person.
00:46:09He explained that there were no accommodations to be had,
00:46:13and that he'd have to wait until morning to go into the nearest town for gasoline.
00:46:18Well, I was welcome to spend the night.
00:46:23He said something about looking after his children.
00:46:30This seemed peculiar, as I'd seen no sign of anyone else living in the house.
