00:00I'm not sure why I've never done this sort of tour before.
00:06I mean, the castles have been here for hundreds of years,
00:08and the situations have been here,
00:10and for some reason I've never done it.
00:16As I've travelled around amongst all these venues,
00:18it's come home more and more what a wealth of history we have,
00:22and why American friends of mine will always say to me,
00:25you know, do you take it for granted?
00:27Because, you know, they go back two or three hundred years,
00:30and we go back hundreds and hundreds of years,
00:32and they start talking about Henry VIII
00:35and people who are cavorted around these lawns.
00:38I mean, it is fantastic, and it's good to keep it in mind.
00:42Tonight, you see, the castle's right behind us.
00:44It's fantastic to feel that you're there
00:46with this incredible natural backdrop.
00:49Now, I mean, I'm not expecting to be sort of ignored by the public
00:52while they look at it,
00:53but I just think sometimes there's a magic involved
00:56when people look past you and see Leeds Castle and go,
00:59I'm here, I'm sitting here amongst these people,
01:01and we're seeing Cliff and the band and the dancers,
01:03and the Leeds Castle's right there as well.
01:05So, I think Leeds has been special.
01:08Mummy says no, Daddy says no, Brother says no,
01:15but they all gotta go, cos we say yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:20We say yeah, yeah, yeah. We say yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:25We say yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:29If we didn't go ahead, if we thought of all they said,
01:34we might as well give up, man.
01:36Well, ever since I was about 16, I've been going every concert
01:38when he's been doing London.
01:40I am a real Cliff fan, and as soon as I hear him singing,
01:44I'm gonna, sorry, manager, I'm gonna run,
01:46and I'm gonna go and watch Cliff.
01:48I really like his new material, and I've seen it on tour before,
01:50and that's why I'm back again here tonight.
01:52I've come all the way from Denmark to see this show special.
01:55It's the very first time I've seen him live,
01:57and I just can't wait. I'm really excited.
02:04The thing about Leeds Castle is that you see these photographs,
02:06and of course, it's supposed to be one of the most loveliest castles,
02:09you know, in the country, and you think it can't live up to it.
02:12But coming into it, I thought, oh, no, this is not disappointing at all.
02:15It's like seeing somebody, and they actually look like they've thought
02:17of them. It was just a wonderful experience.
02:19I loved it coming in here.
02:33So, Cliff, welcome to Leeds Castle. Hi, how are you doing?
02:35I'm Russell, the castle butler. Very nice to meet you.
02:37I'm nice to see you. Hi.
02:38Please come through. I'll take you.
02:40The castle what? The castle butler?
02:42I am too, yes.
02:43You buttled the little castle.
02:44I buttled the whole castle, yes.
02:46Please follow me, sir. I'll take you straight up.
02:49One of the nice things about being here at Leeds Castle is that we did
02:51two shows here, so therefore, it gave me a chance to stay the night.
02:54And as with these old buildings, there's a great feel about them.
02:59There's a kind of old-world elegance, and there's four-poster beds
03:03and very comfy old velvet seats and things around the place,
03:07and I really enjoy that.
03:10This is Julie Neal, our housekeeper.
03:12Hello, sir.
03:13Hello, sir.
03:14Hello, sir.
03:15Hello, again.
03:16Hello, again.
03:17Please come through, sir.
03:18The bathroom's straight in front of you.
03:19Uh-huh.
03:20And there we are.
03:21Oh, wow.
03:22Oh, that'll be next.
03:23Okay.
03:24Fantastic.
03:25What's the name of your audience?
03:26It's great in there.
03:27Where's the performance area?
03:28Over here.
03:29Where's our stage room?
03:30Just to your right, sir.
03:31For the right?
03:32Yeah.
03:33Not quite.
03:34I still can't quite see it.
03:35Oh, okay.
03:36Probably just as well.
03:37I couldn't stand the noise.
03:38There's something about me that doesn't...
03:40I don't want to stay in the past, but I don't want to lose it.
03:43And it's nice to have a place like this to come to and be able to stay,
03:46and enjoy what people hundreds of years enjoyed before us.
04:04Now, I happen to know that next door is where Pavarotti's staying.
04:10I think it's quite a long time ago.
04:12Ten years ago.
04:13So, as you can see, the bed leans now.
04:16I'm joking.
04:17But it's true that they actually built a special shower for him.
04:20I mean, his needs in terms of showers were special.
04:24So he got a special shower.
04:27I kind of feel it's height of luxury.
04:31Mind you, now I come to think of my shower at home is as big as this.
04:34See what you do.
04:36What car, what girl, what tree, what girl, what are you talking about?
04:42I never left the house.
04:44What keys, what trash.
04:46How dare you ask.
04:48The call is gone.
04:50Move on.
04:54Daddy, you better move on.
04:57Do you irrigate at all?
04:58Or is it just natural rainfall?
05:00We haven't this year, only just with the hose pipe.
05:03Yeah.
05:04There's been no band though, is there?
05:06No.
05:07We have an extraction license to take out so many gallons from the lake.
05:09Off the lake, yeah.
05:10But we don't use it all.
05:11We want a spring line.
05:12That's why there's springs coming out all over the place.
05:15Fantastic place for a castle, really.
05:17I know, it's perfect.
05:18They always did pick the best spots, didn't they?
05:20That's it.
05:21Or is this where my rose is going?
05:22This is where your rose is going, yes.
05:23Great.
05:24When I got here and found that they had a rose, in fact it's a rose that's been named after
05:28me.
05:29My fans as a birthday present had it done some years back and I thought that's really nice.
05:33I like the idea that a place like this, where they have all sorts of wonderful plants and
05:38they have a lot of very, very wonderful old roses, which have great perfume and have a
05:42sort of elegance about them.
05:43I felt kind of thrilled to have my little floribunda planted there and to help him plant
05:48it was terrific.
05:49So Cliff, your rose, Cliff Richard, we know it's a floribunda rose.
05:54Yes.
05:55And we know it's a lovely pink, similar to the pink behind us.
05:58Can you tell me anything about it?
05:59Because I'm not sure.
06:00Well, do you know, I don't know what kind of, I mean, other than it's a floribunda,
06:05I kind of realise that, but I think they had to go to some horticultural society, I suppose,
06:09and submit the idea.
06:11Yes.
06:12And they came up with this one, which I thought was nice.
06:14It doesn't smell particularly pungent, but then as a rose for a male, I suppose that's
06:19probably right.
06:20Because I know the Gloria Heineford's got a beautiful smelling rose, absolutely fantastic.
06:23So that's basically it, really.
06:25It certainly looks a youthful rose, maybe that's why.
06:27Ah, well, there you go, you see.
06:29Great.
06:30Ah, that's excellent.
06:31I think that's probably just about enough.
06:32There we are, Cliff Richard rose.
06:33Great, thank you.
06:34Thank you very much.
06:35Mum and Papa told me, son, you better watch your step.
06:36What they knew about Miss Molly, have to watch my papa myself.
06:37Good golly Miss Molly.
06:38Good golly Miss Molly.
06:39You sure like to fall.
06:40Hey, when you're rocking and rolling.
06:41Hey, when you're rocking and rolling.
06:42You can't hear your mama call.
06:44When I first put this show together for the Albert Hall.
06:45Um, I think we had about three years ago.
06:46Yeah.
06:47Yeah.
06:48Yeah.
06:49Yeah.
06:50three weeks of rehearsal.
06:51And the dancers had time with and without me.
06:53I, it's always a difficult thing as a singer to try to.
06:54bring the two together.
06:55I think we had about three weeks of rehearsal.
06:56And the dancers had time with and without me.
06:57I, it's always a difficult thing as a singer to.
06:58Try to bring the two together.
06:59I think we had about three weeks of rehearsal and the dancers had time with and without me.
07:02I, it's always a difficult thing as a singer to.
07:03Well, I, I think about three weeks of rehearsal.
07:04When you're rocking and rolling.
07:06You're rocking and rolling.
07:07When you, you're rocking and rolling.
07:10You can't hear you mama call.
07:11When I first put the show together for the Albert Hall.
07:14Um, I think we had about three weeks of rehearsal and the dancers had time with and without me.
07:19It, I, I, it's always a difficult thing as a singer to try to bring the two together.
07:24It's, it's very effective when you do it.
07:26But I did have to give quite a lot of priority because I was singing so much new material to the music.
07:30to the music but I did get together with the dancers and I spent a good part of
07:33that three weeks at least probably eight days of it almost completely with them
07:38Cliff came in most evenings didn't he a couple of hours every day so we got the
07:43opportunity to do the choreography around Cliff
08:00you're not there with me they are wonderful dancers great great young
08:09dancers great style to them and very energetic it's good fun he's a really
08:14nice guy he's really cool he's really nice to work for and we have a good
08:18laughter in there William Forsyth who is the choreographer I work with him in
08:23Australia and I said to him you know I like singing live and the difficulty for
08:27me singing live is if you put me in doing all sorts of dance steps all the
08:31time my diaphragm won't you can't cope with this and so he said don't worry about
08:37it I'll get you in and out and in and out and that's what he's done he's he's
08:40woven me into the routines and it's it's very helpful for me because I can come
08:44out I can still sing nothing is beyond my capabilities and I can do it and still
08:49concentrate on singing
08:52having dances is a fantastic bonus it makes the show look so luxurious I know
09:03that the dancers have made a big contribution to the show
09:10also staying at Leeds Castle gives us a chance to again eat where people in our
09:16history have eaten before and I've eaten in some wonderful restaurants but I am
09:21still I'm still in awe when you sit somewhere and there's paintings on the
09:25wall and this woodwork that's probably been there for eons
09:30okay and you sit with your friends and Silla as well at that night eating dinner
09:41here and it's just it's just a wonderful wonderful experience and we're so
09:45privileged to be able to get in easily and then to be able to dine and stay there I
09:49mean it's just wonderful the thing about Leeds Castle of course is it is open to
09:52the public people can stay here
09:59you know I've done so on and off for quite a long time but got to know her more since we shared Barbados together you know she has a place in Barbados and I do now and getting to know is
10:06it's been great fun she's a really lively wonderful girl and I and I so happy to have got to know her somewhat so to have
10:13her come over here and and just be around and to sing a song because we did something together
10:20at the Albert hall and it kind of took you know whatever whatever
10:22yeah whatever she wants to do it like Olivia and Travolta
10:24yeah I think so great so great so great you know I've done so on and off for quite a long time but got to know her more since we shared Barbados together you know she has a place in Barbados and I do now and getting to know has been great fun she's a really lively wonderful girl and I and I so happy to have got to know her somewhat so to have her come over here and and just be around and to sing a song because we did something together at the Albert Hall and it kind of
10:35so to have her come over here and and just be around and to sing a song because we did something
10:41together at the Albert Hall and it kind of triggered off I thought well you know it's a
10:44shame if you only do that sort of thing once and it was never really captured on film so it's been
10:49great fun to be able to do the same thing again but this time to have it there forever and terrific
11:05so this is it right this is the vineyard
11:32yeah look at this wonderful I didn't actually know that they had a vineyard here and of course
11:42as people know that I have a vineyard of my own in Portugal and of course I think in comparison to
11:48here it must be much easier for me to grow my grapes in Portugal where there is almost certainly the
11:53summers of sunlight yes this archway was put in just purely for the bidet visitors to walk right
11:59across yeah yeah see we've got a few bunches just that's about the stage that our vines are in now
12:04where are they oh yeah yeah okay when do you pick yours yours mine's about the first second week of
12:10September again dependent last year it's so strange last year was that great year smack in the middle
12:16of picking we got a message back from the winery saying stop stop stop the grapes you're now picking
12:20are not sweet enough we need to wait another five or six days and sure enough they come and pick one off
12:24and go yep it's ready I don't know how they can tell they all taste sweet to me grapes are the
12:30terrible things really because they they need cool they need some cold they need some rain but they
12:35definitely want Sun so it's interesting to see that they could actually do that here
12:39how long have you had your vineyards when did you plant or have they always been 90 no no there was a
12:46small vineyard there but they were incredibly old and really bad they were all falling over so we
12:51dug them all up and had to dig right down and get all the roots out and everything then we planted new
12:56stuff in 98 I think this is our sixth year just coming in and it's sold in the supermarkets Trevor
13:02wonderful would you like just an aperitif well you've sold it to me now this is this is the
13:07sable block two thousand two thousand seven block yes which is on the grass dry crisp white wine this
13:16this one one of silver in the local vineyard association and tasting I'll be interested to
13:21know what you think about it we've got to do that no you don't have to but I like have a little sniff
13:26good health hmm oh yeah I don't I'm not gonna spit that out let's try got a little spritz
13:41nice and light and dry yep ideal summer evenings chilled sitting in the garden I could have that
13:51summer lunch times and this is what's percentage alcohol it's only about 10% I believe this one
13:56what's his name his name is peewee peewee a male golden eagle why did you have to tell us to hold
14:16close to the wall when we came in if peewee is tethered why did we have to cling to the wall like
14:23I'm a bit frightened you know it's just that I don't trust him completely with other people
14:27out in the wild in Scotland they will take rabbits and hares foxes and roe deer in captivity you know
14:34there's we have to be very careful because he will attack a large dog and we have to be careful of
14:40children as well no problem at all by taking one out and lifting it up he likes wild birds so you're
14:45all right oh dear he's gorgeous we'll definitely keep an eye on him today yeah so are you gonna fly
14:53one today yeah you have to put something special protection on your arm that's right we have a big
14:57gauntlet that we put onto the arm and then we can sit the birds so why are you so scarred oh here it
15:04comes okay I'm not gonna look I'm not gonna make eye contact with this one jack is an african auger
15:14buzzard auger buzzer what do they eat um carrier mainly so it's food that's died and actually have
15:18been killed oh they don't actually kill themselves they're just um occasional but they're really lazy
15:22jackals of the air yeah that's right yeah they're also known as a jackal buzzer jack is looking at me
15:29I've got a jack jack but currently he's the only one in the UK so he's uh well you know what they
15:35say about a bird in the hand worth two in a bush well there's two over there that worries me oh he's laughing at that he liked that joke
15:42I know he did what I still can't understand is if they can go and catch mice why they don't say
15:48who needs help let's just go off and do it ourselves we have a bond on their dad okay so if you just lift
16:00your arm up come on Jack oh that was trying to come oh come on Jack come on Jack there he is hey
16:13that's fantastic did he eat that whole he swallowed all of it whole was that the head of a chicken or
16:20something yeah yeah head of a baby oh really oh my goodness he's looking for more and I don't have
16:25any so okay I should grab him yeah okay so nice little piece of food there we go wow that's the first
16:35fantastic thank you Jack okay look you go first cuz I did the flying eagle why did they tell us to
16:47cling to the wall because if there was if we were all loose in this area they were all loose yeah that
16:53one is the only one that would be alive he hasn't clocked us yet no he hasn't yet fortunately I think
16:59the camera's got him fascinated he'd have a very swollen stomach but he'd be alive oh that's brilliant
17:08obviously playing up oh gosh I'm getting cheeky now oh don't don't don't don't thank you thank you and
17:19I'm very nervous you know this maze closes at 1500 hours three o'clock this afternoon
17:33it's 25 past five how will you how will I know hello at least I can see people I'm so pleased to
17:43see you cuz I'm lost I've lost clip clear clear seller I'm here where are you where are you thank you I
18:00love it have you seen Silla black oh okay Silla Silla is it all green round you
18:12it's all green I'm the greenest one is okay they won't we know you're in the maze
18:21now then which way that way okay they could be sending me up properly are you sure she's she's
18:35right here how did you get oh hang on follow me traps I'll be with you shortly
18:42shall I wait for you so I've got a concert to do tonight I know you'll use any excuse to get out of
18:50it okay ah there you go where is she oh yeah yeah last time you said that way now it's this way
19:00it's funny though because when I'm standing over there I said which way does she go they went that
19:18way so I came here and I said which way did you go and they went that way which is true but I'm
19:22disconcerting that we're not listening to you anymore wonder what we're gonna find around this
19:29corner oh a camera oh it's so good to see you I think we're truly on the way out now I think we
19:38are yeah but I've got you I know it takes it takes to well we still have our our friends out there on
19:51the embankment there they are we made it we made it it is this is the way out then yep this is that was
19:59this is the way well it's ruined my Jimmy Choo boots here was a little polish up I'll help us from
20:08above I'm not quite sure the theory of keep turning left I'm not quite sure the theory of keep turning
20:13left one place you can come and say they do do we go through that we go down below there do we go
20:30so this is the way that this is the place to come if you don't want to get lost
20:59you don't want the concert yeah away from it all well thank you very much thank you well I'm glad
21:05I'm out of that maze well from one days to another here we go oh look at this oh what you're gonna
21:12have to marry me now clip oh okay I do I fancy being lady of the manor I really doesn't even have
21:18to buy the castle yes thank you all I think he said I fancy some tea fabulous oh this is our friend
21:26Simeon he's gonna Simeon hi hello sir you're already waiting for us well absolutely phone you from the
21:32maze they said you might be a while we were what's your official title then I'm the under butler the
21:39under butler do you like milk first I do I'm a northerner I like milking and what kind of tea is it
21:49it's just almost a long tea is it what tea bags maybe a little bit of milk in there because you
22:00know we northerners we don't like oh I'll have that one too much yeah it is for these doors into the
22:05tiny tiny dash she likes to be able to put the stand in it and it stands up by itself just just covering
22:11the pattern we know each other so what's happened in this car I mean who the famous people have been
22:19here Wow well there's a certainly a long story here and the castle has been around for about a
22:24thousand years a lot of what you see at the moment was done by Henry VIII in fact there's an entire
22:31floor that he had built for Catherine of Aragon one of his wives what so did he live here or just you
22:37I mean was it a sort of a retreat well I don't know if Henry VIII really lived anywhere all the
22:41time he was always moving it was constantly retreating well I think he brought all of them
22:49and I'm sure lots of other ladies as well because of course he the castle is just down the road where
22:53Anne Boleyn's ancestral home is okay so there's a lot going on locally you know what that's why I feel
23:00at home here you don't take sugar do you I do oh Simeon she takes sugar I don't spend it would you
23:08like one lump or two oh I've always wanted somebody to say that to me would you like one lump or two
23:15does it have ghosts this castle was one that saved an owner's life I think it was Lord Fairfax who was
23:23sitting in what was then his bedroom is now our boardroom on a window seat which ran just above
23:28the moats and out the corner of his eye he saw a black dog in his room and he thought this was
23:35very strange stood up and walked towards the dog to investigate when the entire side of the castle the
23:40window the seat and everything fell down into the moat so where does the ghost come in well the dog
23:46the dog was the dog was the girl was no yes absolutely there was no even a doggy ghost have
23:52there been other you know film stars and people oh yeah oh absolutely we want gossip well when we
23:59have that we still wants gossip with the likes of El Flynn and no cowards were they filming here or no
24:08no this is it almost watch buckling movies didn't he absolutely but this was a very private home for
24:14them when they were relaxing and the private owner of the time they all heard personal friends and they
24:19used to come home there was no media loud anywhere near she was very good friends with the people
24:23who owned all the top newspapers so it was one of the most private retreats in the world for them to
24:30come to or will I all the bedrooms upstairs have inter joining doors so I'm sure Henry I've seen that
24:39head those bedrooms last night I had nothing into locking uh you had a window I did well people
24:47who can get in that way they could actually a cat this morning a cat woke me up this morning it could
24:53have been a ghost cat it must have been a guy in fact I do believe that that window fell into the moat
25:09so it's not an audio I'm not a cat until I'm a mother's voice I'm looking for the answers all I need to
25:14hear that music they're wired for someone and they're wired for someone and I'm out for the
25:21headphones so I can't help for the music I'm selling to my pocket and I'm going to use it stereo
25:23I'm not a stranger in the right now this room is oh oh whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa oh yeah
25:28I'm out for the headphones yes you have to use the headphones on my computer and I'm going to use the
25:31Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh...
25:34Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh...
25:36Oh, oh, oh...
25:38I like that...
25:40Whoa, oh, oh, oh...
25:42The jackpot rolls...
25:44That way to tie it towards the leg.
25:47Oh, oh, oh...
25:49Oh, oh, oh, oh...
25:52Okay.
25:53Okay.
