00:00What is the link between climate change and heatwaves?
00:06As parts of Europe continue to swelter in soaring temperatures,
00:11we've spoken to climate experts to verify the link between climate change and heatwaves.
00:17A heatwave is a prolonged period, usually of at least three days, of much warmer than average weather.
00:23The heatwave threshold temperature varies across Europe,
00:26for example from 25 degrees Celsius in Helsinki to 39 degrees Celsius in Athens.
00:33These thresholds also vary within countries.
00:36Scientists do not directly attribute heatwaves to climate change.
00:40These episodes can happen regardless of rising global temperatures.
00:43But climate change is making heatwaves more frequent, more intense and longer lasting.
00:50Researchers at Carbon Brief have mapped every scientific study
00:53on how climate change has influenced extreme weather events,
00:57such as flooding, drought or heatwaves.
01:00These studies cover 116 heat-related events in Europe.
01:05Of those, 95% were scientifically deemed to have been made more severe
01:11or more likely because of climate change.
01:14This is why scientists say episodes of intense heat will probably become the new normal.
01:20Additional global warming may further increase the frequency and intensity of heatwaves.
01:26And Europe is vulnerable because it's the world's fastest warming continent.
01:31Other studies link Europe's heatwaves to double jet streams,
01:34which is when a band of very strong air coming from the west splits into two branches,
01:39leaving a mass of warm air over Europe.
