00:00A quiet street in Abertilary could soon become home to one of Wales' boldest steps towards
00:06a greener future if planners give it the green light.
00:11Number 4 Ashfield Terrace in the Sixbells area of the town could become the first house
00:15in Wales to run entirely on hydrogen gas.
00:19The proposal submitted to Bliner Gwent County Borough Council would see the former terraced
00:23home retrofitted as a demonstrated property, showing how hydrogen can be used as a clean,
00:28alternative fuel for heating and cooking.
00:32Hydrogen powered homes work by replacing traditional gas appliances with specially designed hydrogen
00:36compatible versions like boilers and hobs.
00:40The hydrogen gas itself can be stored in tanks or supplied through a dedicated pipeline.
00:45When used, hydrogen emits only water vapour, making it a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels
00:50and a key technology in the drive towards net zero.
00:53The initiative is being led by the Pobel Group under their Kartrevi Hydrogen Homes project.
00:58If approved, the property would operate in this trial phase for two years, providing valuable
01:02data on performance, emissions and efficiency.
01:06Palling agent Nia Williams says the trial is designed to support Wales' net zero targets
01:11by offering a glimpse into the future of low carbon housing.
01:14After the demonstration period, the house could be converted back to a normal home and reconnected
01:18to mains gas.
01:20Public interest in the project is expected to grow, but access will be limited.
01:24Visits will be strictly by appointment, with a maximum of three tour sessions a day and
01:29up to six people per visit.
01:31Supporters argue it could be a crucial first step in demonstrating that hydrogen isn't
01:35just a theory.
01:36It could be retrofitted into existing homes and scaled up in communities across Wales and
01:40beyond.
