00:22And, uh, they'll, they'll ruin your mind?
00:24For this list, we'll be looking at grim secrets and not-so-hidden facts about popular animated TV shows and franchises that might make you uncomfortable.
00:34Do you know any other dark facts about cartoons?
00:37Let us know below.
00:4010. Slaying Sales
00:42The Transformers
00:44After getting hooked on The Transformers TV show, fans were probably excited to discover they were also getting a film in 1986.
00:52Organize a battle unit. We're going after them.
00:57But that delight turned to horror when they saw big-named characters like Ironhide and Optimus Prime get graphically wrecked on the big screen.
01:05As it turns out, it wasn't a creative decision that led to the downfall of many Transformers.
01:11Do not grieve.
01:14Soon, I shall be one with The Matrix.
01:19Parent company Hasbro wanted to shine the spotlight on a new line of second-generation toys.
01:25So, they decided it would be great to wipe out the first generation of characters in the movie.
01:30But having Optimus Prime get mortally wounded was too much for some fans.
01:34A huge fan campaign led to the producers bringing back the Autobots' leader.
01:39Unless a new supply of energy is found, nobody is going to win this war.
01:459. Stone Age Smoking
01:47The Flintstones
01:48The Flintstones quickly became vital viewing for kids and adults alike thanks to its unique combination of modern sitcom conventions and a Stone Age setting.
01:58What happened to all the hot water?
02:01I'm sorry, Fred.
02:02I used it to do the wash this morning.
02:04Oh, boy.
02:06Personally, I'm glad there's no hot water.
02:08It stings my trunk.
02:09Eventually, that popularity led to the show being connected to a lot of products.
02:13But one economic connection didn't particularly age well.
02:16In one of the commercials, Barney and Fred watch Wilma and Betty working hard as they do garden chores.
02:22So, the duo sneaks off to avoid their guilt rather than help out their partners.
02:27They sure work hard, don't they, Barney?
02:30Yeah.
02:30I hate to see them work so hard.
02:32Yeah, me too.
02:34And let's go around back when we can't see them.
02:37They also decided to whip out some Winston-branded cigarettes and smoke while hiding.
02:42It's pretty jarring to see these family-friendly icons advocate for smoking with corporate dialogue.
02:47Thankfully, Welch's Grape Juice stepped in as a big show sponsor in the third season.
02:52Hey, Welch's Grape Juice for breakfast sounds great.
02:55Make it two, will you, Wilma?
02:57Mmm.
02:59What, what, what?
03:00Delicious.
03:028.
03:03Consumption Island, Peppa Pig
03:05Peppa Pig seems like a peaceful universe where nothing bad happens.
03:10We're going on a fishing trip.
03:12On a boot.
03:13On the sea.
03:15Okay, let's go.
03:16But fans have looked a little closer to see a dark implication.
03:20In the episode, Desert Island, Grampy Rabbit, Granddad Dog, and Grandpa Pig go on a fishing
03:26trip that goes wrong.
03:28After getting stranded on a desert, the trio begins to wonder what to eat.
03:32Good.
03:32We should save the chocolate in case we get hungry later.
03:37During their conversation, Grampy Rabbit and Granddad Dog glance at Grandpa Pig like
03:43he might be an option on the table.
03:45Fortunately, the trio was rescued before anyone is turned into bacon.
03:49But what makes it more disturbing is the fact that the trio was only stuck on the island
03:54for a couple of hours.
03:55Is anyone else missing cheese?
03:58We've only been here five minutes, Grampy Rabbit.
04:007.
04:02The House Un-American Activities, Mr. Magoo
04:05Today, the character of Mr. Magoo is seen as an old man who gets into problems due to
04:11his bad eyesight.
04:12Could you direct me to Armand's exclusive shop for men?
04:15Oh, thank you, officer.
04:18I'll put in a good word for you with the chief.
04:21However, there was a lot more to the character than people expected.
04:25John Hubley was an animator at Disney until he left the company after a notable strike in
04:30the 1940s.
04:31Disney blamed the strike on communism when they testified at the House Un-American Activities
04:36Committee.
04:36In 1949, Hubley and Millard Kaufman began creating comics with Magoo.
04:4180,000 people killed in the back of everything.
04:45Ouch, ouch!
04:46Down, sir.
04:47Down, I say.
04:48The duo parodied the obsession of hunting apparent communists by developing the character.
04:53Magoo would often spout offensive remarks about the movement and turn on neighbors with
04:58his paranoia.
04:59Even Magoo's nearsightedness was meant to reflect his short-sighted nature.
05:04Right away, right away, I hear you, I hear you.
05:06It's never sticky, never gummy, dries instantly, even dries underwater.
05:10No, no, no, out!
05:12Number 6.
05:13The Orphans
05:14DuckTales
05:15In the original DuckTales cartoon, Donald Duck leaves his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie
05:21with Scrooge McDuck.
05:23I want to see the world.
05:25So I'll buy you a globe.
05:28I gotta go.
05:30Take care of my nephews.
05:32The dynamic between the boys and their rich relative was so fun that it probably made
05:37viewers overlook one major question.
05:40Why aren't the trio with their parents?
05:42Thankfully, the comics expand on that backstory.
05:45Now, when I'm in the Navy, Grace, you're mine to run to Scrooge.
05:50But he's so cheap.
05:52Yeah, but he's family.
05:54Okay, Huey?
05:55The kids were left with Donald temporarily after their unnamed father was hospitalized.
06:00Apparently, the patriarch was injured after the trio put firecrackers under his chair as
06:05a wacky practical joke.
06:07Fan theories suggest that since the kids remained with Donald and their father is never mentioned,
06:13he likely perished from their joke.
06:15Viewers also posit that their mother, DeleDuck, abandoned her children in the wake of this incident.
06:21You're a big dog.
06:23I'm your spitballs.
06:25Ah, yes and no, I can tell them.
06:28Number 5.
06:29Stuttering Purpose
06:30The Looney Tunes franchise.
06:33One of the most recurring aspects of Looney Tunes' character Porky Pig is the fact that
06:38he often stutters while speaking.
06:40On the 18th of April in 75...
06:42Soon after his debut in 1935, the unique vocal feature took center stage, but it wasn't exactly
06:51on purpose.
06:52Porky's voice actor at the time, Joe Doherty, had an actual stutter.
06:56Harley, a man is now alive.
07:01Who remembers that famous day and year?
07:08His speech disorder apparently caused recording sessions to take longer.
07:11At points, actors like the legendary Count Catelli were brought in to voice Porky and speed
07:16things up, but the studio eventually decided to fire Doherty in 1937, when the reigns of
07:21the cartoon pig were handed to Mel Blanc and other actors.
07:25The stutter was kept as a character trademark.
07:27He-Man and the Masters of the Universe
07:33If there's one character that nailed the maniacal laugh, it's Skeletor.
07:47You've spent much time watching the palace, Skeletor.
07:51If I am to know my enemies, fool, I must study them.
07:55What's the matter?
07:56Some sort of interference.
07:57The terrifying and sometimes hilarious baddie is a real thorn in the side of He-Man.
08:02And when Mattel's toy line became a TV show, Skeletor became a household name.
08:07He-Man is a lucky fool.
08:09One day I will destroy him and his friends in the palace.
08:12But his inspiration is pretty spooky.
08:15When Mark Taylor was a kid, he went to an amusement park and spotted a creepy corpse in a fun house
08:20that he was convinced was real.
08:22It turns out, he was right.
08:24The body actually belonged to a notable outlaw named Elmer McCurdy.
08:27Years later, when Taylor was working as a designer for Mattel, he used this startling childhood
08:32incident as the inspiration for He-Man's nemesis.
08:35They were fools not to use it, but I will.
08:40I'll dig it out, Trapjaw.
08:43I've got a kingdom to destroy.
08:46Number 3.
08:47Creator Chris Savino's history of harassment, The Loud House.
08:51Our breed is dying, Tristan.
08:53We must continue to transform mortals or face our greatest fear.
08:57Fewer dungeon parties?
08:59No, dense nephew.
09:01Extinction.
09:03Thanks to working on big projects like The Powerpuff Girls and Dexter's Laboratory,
09:07Chris Savino garnered quite the resume.
09:09He eventually used his experience to create the 2016 show, The Loud House.
09:14I also do furniture moving and jar opening.
09:16Keep it in mind.
09:17Oh, it's my lucky day.
09:20I dropped a jar of pickles under the sofa.
09:23But Savino's accomplishments were overshadowed by a dark truth.
09:27In 2017, he faced numerous allegations of harassment.
09:31On top of this, Savino allegedly blacklisted women from the animation industry when they
09:35wouldn't consent to an inappropriate relationship.
09:38His terrible actions had seemingly been going on quietly for over a decade behind the scenes.
09:43After the serious allegations went public, Nickelodeon fired Savino.
09:47They continued making The Loud House without his involvement.
09:51I justified it by telling myself that kids around the world were getting into science because of me.
09:56But science is honest, and I certainly haven't been.
10:01Number 2.
10:02Causing seizures
10:03Pokemon
10:05On top of being a video game and a merchandising juggernaut, Pokemon also has its famous anime.
10:16But one of the franchise's darkest moments came in an early episode of their popular show that
10:21aired in Japan in 1997. During the Electric Soldier Porygon entry, a scene features lights
10:27flashing quickly. The sequence reportedly caused hundreds of kids to be hospitalized due to seizures
10:33and other conditions.
10:39As a result of the scandal, the episode didn't air outside the country. It also meant Porygon was
10:45barely featured in future anime episodes or films. Ironically, it was Pikachu's attack in that scene
10:51that caused the issue. But Porygon is still seen as the face of this dark incident.

11:15Number 1.
11:17The Tarnished Legacy of John Kay The Ren & Stimpy Show
11:21To The Ren & Stimpy Show fans, creator John Crisfalusi, aka John Kay, was a genius.
11:27What are you doing?
11:33I am making an eminated cartoony picture, Ren.
11:36But for the animators that worked on the show, he was horrible. John Kay was said to be overly
11:41demanding and created a hostile work environment. In 2018, serious allegations also came
11:46out about Chris Falusi.
11:48But if you think that I'm going to help you, you're barking at the wrong ticket.
11:54Animators Robin Bird and Katie Rice claimed that he acted inappropriately to them when they were
11:59underage. John Kay also faced additional allegations of harassment. Due to the statute of limitations,
12:05he didn't face any formal charges. However, his animation career was effectively over.
12:10John Kay then made a bizarre public statement and blamed his ADHD,
12:14an undiagnosed bipolar disorder for his actions. This greatly angered Bird, Rice, and the public.
12:21A producer is the guy that tells the artist what to do, and later makes all the changes.
12:27And then, when the cartoon's done, he takes all the credit.
