00:00
Hi, everyone. I'm Michael Schneider.
00:07
And I'm Emily Longoretta. And welcome back to Variety's Award Circuit. We are breaking
00:11
down some of the key television categories at this year's Emmys. And this time we're
00:15
looking at limited series, anthology, and TV movie field. And the actors there, is there
00:21
a new baby reindeer this time?
00:22
Yes, there is.
00:23
There is. Big surprise. Big surprise. We will dive into that. But first, we'll talk
00:28
about the actresses.
00:30
Yeah. So, I mean, this is an interesting mix because this includes both limited series,
00:35
anthology series, and movies. So there's a little bit of everyone who's a possible contender
00:40
and some huge names, too. Cate Blanchett from Disclaimer on Apple TV+.
00:46
Seems like Disclaimer was a long time ago, but I guess it wasn't that long.
00:49
What is time? I don't remember anything anymore.
00:51
Great question.
00:53
Kristen Milioti for The Penguin, who really was a standout this year and won that
00:58
performance that everyone's still talking about.
01:00
Yeah. I would say Front Runner for sure.
01:02
Yeah.
01:02
I didn't see you. But she did. She knew it from the very beginning.
01:09
But then Rashida Jones in Black Mirror. I mean, people love Rashida Jones. Amanda Seyfried.
01:14
Everyone loves Amanda. And Long Bright River on Peacock.
01:18
But the victim, she's still alive.
01:23
Michelle Williams in Dying for Sex on FX. Again, I'm just going to keep saying it. Everyone loves
01:30
Michelle Williams.
01:31
Yeah. I mean, it's such a great performance and emotional and funny and everything and
01:35
very, like, vulnerable. So that definitely I would also see as a part member.
01:39
Ellen Pompeo in Good American Family.
01:41
I want to know what you are going to tell people when they ask you who you are.
01:46
Part of me said I would be surprised if she broke in because I'm not sure how popular Good
01:50
American Family was. And then I looked and saw that it was topping the Hulu charts every week.
01:53
And people love Ellen Pompeo.
01:55
Yeah. Yeah. She's been in our homes for years.
01:57
100%.
01:58
So seeing her in this role is great. And on the movie side, Bridget Jones, Mad About the
02:02
Boy, Renee Zellweger, who of course has personified that character for years. And that's a beloved
02:08
piece of IP.
02:10
I never thought we'd be talking about it for the Emmys, but I love that.
02:13
Yeah.
02:14
I love that. It's for a TV movie. I mean, that just makes sense.
02:16
Yeah. It's an interesting one because in the rest of the world, that was a movie movie.
02:20
It was in theaters. People actually went to the theater to see it. But here in America,
02:23
it was on Peacock.
02:24
Right.
02:24
So it is a TV movie.
02:26
Yeah.
02:26
So, you know, she's a contender.
02:28
That's right. That's right. There are a lot in the actor race as well. And I actually
02:31
want to start with the TV movie since you ended with it because we have one big one and
02:35
that's Steve Carell from Mountainhead.
02:36
Yeah.
02:37
So Mountainhead is, of course, Jesse Armstrong's follow-up to Succession.
02:40
Succession, yeah.
02:41
And so he created this in two months. We have no idea how this came together so fast.
02:46
I think he made it on his iPhone or something.
02:48
Truly no clue.
02:49
Like how he pulled this off.
02:50
But people love Steve Carell.
02:51
Yeah.
02:52
And the voters love Steve Carell. So I could see him getting through it. But then there's
02:55
also, of course, the front runner, Colin Farrell for The Penguin.
02:58
Yeah.
02:59
It's hard to beat out Colin Farrell, in my opinion, when it comes to The Limited.
03:04
Speaking of that adolescence that we just talked about.
03:07
The new baby reindeer, Stephen Graham for adolescence. So Stephen Graham, of course, is the co-creator
03:11
of the show and the star.
03:13
That's it. The home ain't accused. He hasn't been found guilty. He's been accused. Can you
03:17
not do anything about this? I'm sorry. They're entitled to underpace.
03:21
He co-wrote every episode. I mean, it's hard to say no.
03:26
But you know who else people love?
03:28
I mean, the way that you're teeing this up, I could say every name on this list, but Paul
03:32
Giamatti would be my guess. I like this game. Yeah. So Paul Giamatti had arguably the best
03:37
episode of Black Mirror this season.
03:38
The one we're still thinking about and talking about.
03:40
And people, Paul Giamatti won the surprise Oscar a few years ago. I mean, he's been everywhere. So
03:46
I think that that is definitely, there could definitely be a possibility. Also,
03:50
Brian Tyree Henry for Dope Thief.
03:52
Paper boy.
03:54
People love him. And I think people discovered Dope Thief a little bit late, but that's okay.
04:00
People still discovered it. So people really, really love him. And then, of course, there's
04:04
the monsters, the Menendez brothers.
04:07
People love the Menendez brothers.
04:09
Oh my goodness. Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez.
04:12
They're soon going to be out.
04:13
They probably will be. They could be out by the time you see this.
04:16
Thanks to Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez.
04:18
Exactly.
04:18
You're welcome.
04:20
I love you. I love you.
04:24
You're okay.
04:26
It's up to us now, right?
04:27
They could definitely, either one of them could definitely get nominated.
04:30
I think Cooper might be a little bit more elevated in the Emmy race, but because they're in the
04:35
conversation, that could help them. And then, of course, we also can't forget Jake Gyllenhaal,
04:39
just another name. Jake Gyllenhaal, presumed innocent, was a while ago, but a great performance
04:45
and a really popular show.
04:46
Absolutely. Well, let's turn to Supporting Actress. And again, some big names and some new
04:51
names.
04:52
Yeah, I love that.
04:53
Among names that we're familiar with, of course, Leslie Manville from Disclaimer, and then
04:57
Chloe Sevigny on Monsters, Lyle and Eric Menendez. Dying for Sex has two standouts. Of course,
05:05
Jenny Slate, who's fantastic with Michelle Williams as her BFF, but then Sissy Spacek, the icon.
05:12
I will say Jenny Slate's comedy doesn't always do it for me. And her in this role was such a
05:17
different side of Jenny Slate that I was so blown away. I was really, really into it. So I really
05:23
hope that she gets the love she deserves.
05:25
Then Black Mirror, of course, has a number of standouts. You've got Emma Corrin, who, of course,
05:29
is an award winner for the crown. Kristen Milioti, who we were just talking about over at the
05:36
Penguin.
05:36
She's everywhere.
05:37
Is fantastic, also in Black Mirror. And of course, Tracee Ellis Ross, who has been beloved
05:42
for years from Black-ish and Girlfriends. They're all in the mix. Ruth Negga is in the mix for Presumed
05:48
Innocent, powerful position to be in as the wife on that show. And then Adolescence has some standout
05:55
roles as well. Erin Doherty, of course, from the big episode.
05:59
The therapist episode.
06:00
The therapist episode.
06:01
Quite a mix there.
06:02
It really is such a great mix of people as a supporting actor. And I want to start with
06:07
Adolescence because Owen Cooper, I just don't.
06:11
That kid.
06:12
That kid.
06:13
How?
06:13
Where has he been? How did this happen?
06:15
Well, he hasn't been around long.
06:16
Yeah.
06:17
He's like 12.
06:18
Yeah, he literally was in kindergarten. That's where he was. But this was his first role and
06:22
just blew everyone away.
06:24
Blew me away.
06:25
Blew me away for sure. I was Googling him immediately. Like, how have I not seen this kid before?
06:28
And how did he do this?
06:31
Yeah. It's really a play.
06:32
Yeah.
06:32
What they have to do with that one-er.
06:34
Four one-ers in a row.
06:35
She was quite, no offense, quite flat, you know. Right?
06:41
And then, of course, Javier Bardem for Monsters. Lyle and Eric Menendez story. That could definitely
06:46
get in.
06:47
Rob Delaney dying for sex.
06:48
Yeah.
06:49
Diego Luna for La Maquina.
06:51
Yeah.
06:51
I have not heard too much about this, but I know so much people love Diego Luna.
06:56
Yeah, yeah.
06:56
Like, he's so excellent that it may have flown under the radar a little bit. And then I want
07:02
to bring up Bill Camp because he's been everywhere. Presumed Innocent, he was incredible in. But
07:06
then he's also in Sirens, which is a less talked about Netflix limited series. And he's
07:11
really excellent in it.
07:12
Yeah. No, he's just a hard worker. He's, you know.
07:14
He's everywhere.
07:14
Everywhere. So good on Bill Camp and good on his agent.
07:17
Yes, absolutely.
07:19
You're giving him all these great gigs.
07:20
For sure. And then Jesse Plemons, Black Mirror.
07:23
I mean, Jesse Plemons, he's another one of those where you just-
07:26
Protect him at all costs. I love Jesse Plemons.
07:28
He's fantastic in everything he does.
07:30
100%. 100%. So yeah, it's quite the group. Did I forget anybody? Am I missing anyone?
07:35
I mean, you've got Adolescence with Ashley Walters.
07:37
Oh, yes, of course.
07:38
I mean, we could go on and on with all, like, Adolescence.
07:40
The thing is about a lot of these, the limited, it's the whole cast are so good that it's anyone
07:45
that are in it, I could get nominated.
07:48
Yeah. Yeah. So we could go on and on, but we probably should stop there.
07:50
All right.
07:51
Yeah. All right. Well, that's it for this edition of Award Circuit. We'll see you next time.
07:55
Thanks for watching.
