Mexican mayor marries caiman in ritual for good fortune
The mayor of the southern Mexican town of San Pedro Huamelula, Daniel Gutierrez, participated on Monday, June 30, in a unique wedding ceremony with a live caiman, a tradition believed to bring prosperity and abundance to the town. The ritual marriage has been celebrated for over 230 years, symbolizing the union between the Huave and Chontal ethnic groups. During the event, Gutierrez represented the Chontal king, marrying the reptile, who embodies the Huave "princess girl." According to local customs, this union is crucial for ensuring good harvests and abundant fishing. The ceremony highlighted the community's adherence to traditions that connect humans and nature.
