00:00some states don't feel like online casino gaming should be legal and others do seems like maine is
00:06one of those states that's making a big decision this summer yeah maine i think yeah when we last
00:11talked or when you know i came on last week while you were gone but when we last talked
00:15we didn't really know where this was going you know online casino as a nationwide you know
00:21industry we figured might have a similar wave to sports betting back in 2020 2021 you know
00:29sports betting took over pretty easily passed a lot of states and we thought okay well the next
00:34natural evolution is online casino that has not been the case we've seen lots of headwinds even
00:39against the online sports betting industry which has caused legislators to kind of balk at it and
00:44say you know what maybe let's take a longer look at this and see if it really makes sense and if
00:48that much revenue to the state really does you know positively contribute to the state even with the
00:54negatives that might come with it well in maine earlier this year they introduced it got a little
00:58discussion not a ton and then it was tabled so we figured like other states that had started
01:03talking about it this year we would you know have to wait future years uh for further discussion but
01:08you know about a month ago they picked up uh discussions pretty heavily the house passed it
01:13we thought maybe the senate would not go ahead and pass it because it was pretty um split there but
01:18they went ahead and said okay if you concur we'll throw it on the appropriations table and i think that's
01:22where i last chatted with you about it was the appropriations table is this table that if anything
01:29has a fiscal note if it affects the you know budget of the state it has to pass this 13 member of
01:37legislators table the appropriations table now according to local media that you know carefully
01:43watches everything that happens on this table only about 10 of bills get through so again it seemed like
01:48a major hurdle that wouldn't happen uh but as it turns out there were about 300 bills that made it
01:53to this table and about 113 i think it was made it off including the online casino bill so now it goes to
02:01governor janet mills whose administration uh testified against online casino throughout this process
02:08so you have to wonder is that indicative of her going to veto this bill which of course would send it
02:14back and it doesn't seem like there's support to override it plus they're adjourned for the session
02:18so it very unlikely that would happen so you'd have to redo this whole process again to get it to mills
02:26again indications in the past if you know she's not very friendly to gambling even though she was at
02:31the head of the state uh when online sports betting was passed but it's not looking great for this
02:37online casino bill which i guess i should break down real quick it legalizes online casino through the
02:42four tribal nations in the state which is just like online sports betting three of those tribes
02:48four sports betting partnered with caesars one other one partnered with drafting so it wouldn't
02:52be a great big vibrant market with four operators and the like would probably be against caesar and
02:57draft kings you have to imagine they'd stick with those same operators but again it's in governor
03:02mills's desk or on it the desk i suppose and we're waiting to see if she signs it but
03:06indications point to a veto but again anything can happen
