00:00A mirthful Monday afternoon to all. Yours truly, Denise Osorio here, and this is PTV News Now.
00:08Let's kick off the show with what people are talking about.
00:12Sitting Ombudsman Samuel Martírez is set to step down from his post in August, or less than seven weeks away.
00:19And the President, the appointing official to the post, will have no trouble looking for a suitable and competent successor.
00:26Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulia has made no pretenses.
00:30He wants the job and is supremely confident his resume or body of work in government will suffice for the tasks and duties the position demands.
00:39Where now he presides over the government's chief point person chasing bad actors engaged in a wide array of felonies against the state,
00:47his change of heart has prompted him to limit the scope of serving justice to running exclusively after corrupt people in the bureaucracy.
00:54Even better, Remulia has the inner lane in the race to replace Martírez, if there ever is one.
01:01He claims having talked to the President of his intent and plans to inform the Judicial Bar Council,
01:06the body tasked to screen aspirants and candidates to the post well before Martírez calls it a career.
01:13The Judicial Bar Council will formally announce the post officially up for grabs soon, signifying the start of the selection process.
01:19Government has been relentless in seeking ways and means to raise farmers' crop yields and help them earn a better keep.
01:30Earlier today, the President took his team to Science City in Muñoz, Nueva Ecija to preside over the distribution of 16 mobile soil laboratories,
01:39hand out the awards in the 50th Gawad Saka Ceremonies, and engage the farmers in attendance in an ad hoc Q&A.
01:46The Mobile Soil Laboratory is a customized 10-wheeler rig equipped with top-notch soil sampling capabilities
01:53that tests the fertility of a soil sample to include its water chemical parameters.
01:59The first units were unveiled in the first weekend of December last year and has been deployed to Tarlac and Nueva Ecija,
02:06where it has tested some 1,500 soil samples equal to 3 million square meters of land.
02:11After handing out the awards to recipients of the 50th Gawad Saka presentation,
02:17the President yielded or fielded a number of their questions and vowed to improve government services in responding to their needs,
02:25especially in times of natural disasters.
02:28The 16 mobile soil laboratories are to be distributed to each region as part of the Department of Agriculture's 127th Anniversary,
02:35and the Bureau of Soils and Water Management, 74th Founding.
02:41After securing a huge and historic win over the weekend in which the Supreme Court sided with him
02:48to sidestep the federal courts imposing to block his executive orders on certain immigration orders,
02:55President Donald Trump is on a full court to press or to shepherd or even bum rush,
03:00his controversial spending bill marked by massive cuts to existing social welfare programs to ratification by the 4th of July.
03:08Dubbed the big, beautiful bill, the Senate on Saturday narrowly decided to take it on the debate floor
03:15in a move to push it forward in the legislative process and hopefully approve it by the middle of the week
03:21for inking into law by the 4th of July.
03:24But the debate is expected to be fierce, especially with a few GOP holdouts,
03:29who could join Senators Tom Tillis of North Carolina and Rand Paul of Kentucky and all Democrats in voting down the bill.
03:36The bill's most salient and contentious feature, a $4.5 trillion in tax cuts,
03:43which would be offset by a huge cut in Medicaid,
03:46in which millions of poor and indigents will lose their health care benefit.
03:50And with that, we come to the end of the show.
03:55Join us later on for our next set of breaking stories in our evening edition.
