00:00I lied to the American people.
00:02Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're diving into facts about television programs that were suspected by cast, crew, members of production, or fans, that were later confirmed to be true.
00:11Thank you all again.
00:14Jerry Springer's show was scripted, The Jerry Springer Show.
00:17Who can forget this wild daytime show that ran for 27 seasons?
00:21It started off with politics, then pivoted to cheating scandals, chair-throwing, and full-blown chaos, all in the name of ratings, and it paid off.
00:27She's saying that they're engaged, they're supposed to be married in three weeks, what are you doing living with him?
00:32If she's engaged to him, what's he living with me?
00:34At some point, it even outperformed The Oprah Winfrey Show.
00:38Though it was marketed as reality, people started questioning its authenticity.
00:42It is the only thing, the only thing on American television that isn't canned, that isn't written ahead of time by professional writers.
00:49As many rightly suspected, the show wasn't entirely real.
00:52In fact, it was heavily manipulated for entertainment purposes.
00:55Some guests later admitted they were encouraged to exaggerate their stories, and even coached to throw punches.
01:00In some cases, the stories were completely fabricated.
01:03But are we really surprised at the length showbiz will go to rake in profit?
01:07Then even though you can find it in your heart to say I forgive, you might also find it in your best interest to say goodbye.
01:14Dean McDermott's Cheating Scandal, True Tory
01:16Right from the start, Tory's spelling and Dean McDermott's marriage was steeped in controversy.
01:21I've lied my whole life. I'm tired of living like a liar. That's how I got out of things for years.
01:30Both were married to others when they began an affair, eventually tying the knot.
01:34In 2013, rumors spread that McDermott cheated on spelling with a 28-year-old Emily Goodhand.
01:39The next year, their reality show took off, centered on the fallout from his infidelity.
01:43I'm so sorry. Are you really sorry? I'm so sorry.
01:47Since Goodhand was untraceable, many suspected the whole thing was a publicity stunt.
01:51It's not every day someone caught in a high-profile scandal just vanishes.
01:55Yet, during the reunion special, Spelling insisted that this woman was real, and that the affair wrecked her marriage.
02:00Years later, she stuck to that story.
02:02So, it appears instead of handling things privately, Spelling spun her misery into a TV spectacle.
02:06What did you ever tell you to do?
02:08My heart tells me to stay with you and love you like I still do.
02:12If you truly want me back, think of something.
02:16Secret judge, Top Chef.
02:17Whether you're a foodie or just hooked on reality TV showdowns, Top Chef serves up a mix of culinary artistry and entertainment.
02:24How many times did I try to explain to you why we should do butternut squash soup?
02:28And what did me say?
02:29Stand behind your dish.
02:30Oh, soup would have been the most brilliant idea in the world.
02:32Stand behind your dish.
02:34Talented chefs face off in intense challenges under the watchful eyes of respected judges.
02:39And one by one, they're eliminated until a winner emerges.
02:42Please pack your knives and cup.
02:44But some have wondered if the judges don't sometimes get a little help.
02:47In an interview with Padma Lakshmi, a juicy detail slipped out.
02:50There's a secret fifth judge.
02:52Yep, when the panel can't agree, the producers turn to the camera operator, T-Bone, for his take.
02:57Since he tasted the food while filming, his input adds an extra perspective.
03:00Honestly, it sounds like he wields more power than the actual judges, which is kind of awesome.
03:04I'm just sitting here thinking of how difficult judges table is going to be.
03:07Phone-in theft.
03:08Various.
03:09Back in the 2000s, a major scandal rocked UK TV and radio.
03:13In 2007, it was revealed that some of the biggest shows were scamming viewers through rigged phone-in competitions.
03:19It's a kind of television that doesn't just want your attention.
03:22Yep, people were paying to enter contests they had no chance of winning, and some audience members had suspected something was wrong.
03:31Shows like Richard and Judy kept accepting calls, even after a winner had been picked.
03:35GMTV went as far as choosing winners before the phone lines closed.
03:38Some radio stations faked winners entirely, while Blue Peter passed off a studio visitor as the real winner.
03:43We have to look at the context in which that happened, and have to look at the issue of communication and editorial management across the program and between the program and senior management.
03:54It was a massive mess, and millions were unfairly taken from the public.
03:58When Ofcom stepped in, many big-name broadcasters were fined, and apologies followed.
04:03If you're a viewer and you think you've been ripped off, you can go to our website for advice. That's free, by the way.
04:09Intentional sabotage.
04:10The nanny.
04:11Let's be honest, what made the nanny so appealing wasn't just Fran Fine's flair or the clash of worlds.
04:16It was that sizzling, will-they-won't-they tension between her and Mr. Sheffield that kept fans hooked.
04:22Fran.
04:23Yes?
04:25Will you marry me?
04:29Oh, Max.
04:32You know, it's all so sudden.
04:34But once they finally got together, boom, the show ended a season later.
04:37And some wondered if outside forces brought about this change in direction.
04:41In a 2017 interview, Fran Drescher and Peter Mark Jacobson revealed that CBS gave them an ultimatum to marry the leads, or the show gets axed.
04:49As much as you want the people to get together, as soon as they do, people start tuning out.
04:54So, they gave in.
04:55To make matters worse, the series was moved to a different time slot, and ratings dipped.
04:59Sure, viewer interest may have waned, but it's crystal clear that CBS's decisions heavily influenced the show's end.
05:05Oh, we can't leave yet. They haven't thrown the bouquet.
05:08Darling, you, you do that. You're the bride, remember?
05:13Oh, and there's your silver lining.
05:19Secret interview tactics. Panorama.
05:21In 1995, BBC's Martin Bashir sat down with Princess Diana in what became one of the most explosive interviews in history.
05:28I desperately wanted to work. I desperately love my husband, and I wanted to share everything together.
05:35And I thought that we were a very good team.
05:38Watched by around 200 million people, it painted a grim picture of her marriage and royal life.
05:43It was a huge career win for Bashir, but some wondered why Diana had chosen him for this crucial interview.
05:49What evidence did you have that their relationship was continuing even though you were married?
05:54A woman's instinct is a very good one.
05:57Years later, the story behind the interview took a darker turn.
06:01In 2020, an inquiry by Judge Lord Dyson revealed that forged bank documents had been used to trick Diana's brother into arranging the interview.
06:09Although the BBC eventually apologized when the truth broke, Bashir faced no legal repercussions that we know of.
06:14I don't sit here with resentment. I sit here with sadness because a marriage hasn't worked.
06:20I sit here with hope because there's a future ahead.
06:23A future for my husband, a future for myself, and a future for the monarchy.
06:26Pre-selected contestants, the price is right.
06:29This game show legend has folks guessing merchandise prices to win big.
06:34And the actual retail price is $400 and you are the winner, Madeline.
06:39Random audience members are initially chosen to come on down, but how random are they really?
06:43In a 2013 chat with longtime producer Stan Blitz, he revealed the contestants are pre-screened beforehand.
06:49Phyllis, today we are playing a game called Temptation.
06:55He looks for explosive energy, potential humor, and standout personalities.
06:59You're the man, Bob!
07:01Oh my dear, my child!
07:03A former contestant also confirmed that with these qualities, you stand a higher chance of being selected.
07:08Nothing is quite what it seems, right?
07:09Even in 2008, Blinko was accidentally rigged, letting a contestant score up to $30,000 before the error was caught.
07:16The floor director, he just like tears in front of me like somebody got hurt.
07:19I thought, oh, maybe the place had caught fire or something.
07:22And then she drops the fourth one and he runs up and he goes, no!
07:25And he puts his hand out and stops it.
07:27Talk about a lucky glitch.
07:28It makes you wonder what else isn't as spontaneous as it looks on TV.
07:32See you next time on Christ's Drive, bye-bye!
07:34The show was rigged, Legends of the Hidden Temple.
07:37Which one are we going to hear today?
07:39The legend of the lucky pig of Amelia Earhart.
07:4390s kids might remember Legends of the Hidden Temple,
07:45a game show which briefly ran on Nickelodeon based around stunts, mythology, and treasure hunting.
07:51However, the temple run, the show's final and most iconic segment,
07:54was often so complex and confusing that many contestants struggled to make it to the prize within the given time limit.
08:00This led to some speculation that the show was rigged,
08:03and, well, yeah, pretty much.
08:06The host, Kirk Fogg, basically admitted as much to the great big story, claiming,
08:11Producers were only allowed to give out eight championships a year,
08:14so there was a budget, and that's the...
08:18Ah, dang, budget's getting in the way of fun.
08:21Restaging breakups, love is blind.
08:23Netflix's dating show hooks viewers with a wild premise.
08:26Meet a stranger, fall in love, and either marry them or walk away.
08:30I just feel like we're both... we're not... quite... there.
08:34Yeah, that's okay.
08:35With how insane it sounds, it's only natural for people to wonder how real any of it is.
08:39But like most reality shows, it's not all as raw and real as it seems.
08:43You have disrespected me, you have insulted me, you have critiqued me,
08:51and for what it is worth, you have single-handedly shattered my self-confidence.
08:54In a 2020 interview, former participant Lauren Speed spilled that producers encouraged couples
09:00to save their breakups for the altar.
09:01If you were calling it quits, they wanted it dramatic.
09:04So while the emotions might be real, the timing, not as much.
09:07That might explain all those shocking last-minute I don't moments we've come to expect.
09:11Anything for compelling drama, right?
09:12I hope you understand that.
09:20I understand.
09:22And I love you.
09:26Suddenly killed off Susan.
09:28Seinfeld.
09:29She expired.
09:33Are you sure?
09:35May 16th, 1996 was kind of a weird day for Seinfeld fans.
09:39That's when George's fiancée, Susan, suddenly ups and dies after licking a number of toxic
09:44envelopes.
09:45Seriously, she just gets sick and keels over in a matter of seconds.
09:49The bizarre and abrupt ending to the story arc was controversial, and some speculated that
09:53it wasn't entirely a creative decision.
09:55This was confirmed when Jason Alexander appeared on The Howard Stern Show and claimed that actress
10:00Heidi Swedberg was difficult to work with.
10:01He revealed that many cast members had problems playing off her, and Julia Louise Dreyfuss made
10:06a comment about killing off Susan.
10:07Larry David loved the idea, and the rest is sitcom history.
10:11I can't do it!
10:12Help me, Jerry!
10:13Help me!
10:13Why don't you just break it off with her?
10:15Tell her it's over!
10:16John Amos randomly disappears.
10:18Good Times
10:18It's a bold choice to kill off your main character via letter.
10:32That was what fans of Good Times got when they, and the Evans family, learned that James had
10:37been killed in a car accident.
10:38Talk about an anticlimactic goodbye!
10:40Naturally, this led some fans to speculate that something fishy was going on behind the
10:44scenes.
10:45The official word was that Amos left to pursue a film career, but viewers weren't buying
10:48it.
10:49It was Amos himself who revealed the truth, claiming that he had been fired owing to repeated
10:53arguments with the producers and for openly criticizing the show's direction.
10:57Amos hated the increasing emphasis on J.J.'s comedic shenanigans, which he felt undermined
11:01the realistic tone of the series.
11:03I'll put it this way, I wasn't very tactful in my complaints about the script or the script
11:10points.
11:10The Ingram Incident
11:11Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?
11:13British Army Major Charles Ingram was the third contestant to win the top prize on the
11:24British version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
11:27During his appearance on the show, Ingram struggled with many of the questions, but then seemed
11:31to make a series of improbable correct guesses, leading the producers to suspect that something
11:35was amiss.
11:35They were so suspicious that they refused to hand over the money, and launched an official
11:40investigation.
11:40While reviewing the footage, they found that someone would cough when the correct answer
11:44was said.
11:45Sometimes it came from a waiting contestant, Tequan Wittick, and other times, from Ingram's
11:49wife, who was watching in the audience.
11:52All three were officially charged, receiving fines and suspended prison sentences.
11:56He then went for a one.
11:59Then because...
12:00I actually rather lost the plot of his thinking then.
12:02Much of the show is planned in advance.
12:04Pawn Stars
12:05As viewers have long suspected, Pawn Stars engages in a lot of behind-the-scenes trickery.
12:13People don't just waltz into the uber-busy store, sell that King Arthur's sword they had
12:17laying around, and walk out rich.
12:19Pawn Stars isn't exactly scripted, and many of the items and sellers are indeed authentic,
12:23but they don't just walk in.
12:24They are vetted by the producers beforehand, and guests are kicked out of the store to
12:28film the pre-planned segments using background extras.
12:31This process often requires multiple takes, and the guests are often coached on how to
12:35behave on camera.
12:37Executive producer Brent Montgomery also told the cast members to buy items they otherwise
12:41wouldn't have in order to make good TV.
12:49Patrick Dempsey's Departure, Grey's Anatomy
12:51It was this medical drama that made Patrick Dempsey a star, so it was kind of odd when
13:01he suddenly up and left in April 2015.
13:03He claimed that he wanted to spend more time with his family, but some fans thought there
13:07were ulterior motives.
13:07They were somewhat vindicated in 2021, when the book, How to Save a Life, was published.
13:12While it's true that Dempsey left over scheduling issues, that wasn't the whole story.
13:16The book's authors reveal that Dempsey turned into a nightmare, often terrorizing the set
13:21and bringing up HR issues.
13:23They also claim that some cast members had all sorts of PTSD with him.
13:27The details are murky, but his behavior led to a swift exit from the series.
13:31So we're kissing, but we're not dating?
13:34I knew that was going to come up.
13:35There's no shopping involved.
13:37House Hunters.
13:38What I've got for us is a three-bedroom, two-bath, just a few blocks from elementary
13:42school.
13:43Oh, that's good.
13:43This enduringly popular show sees a couple touring a number of houses, typically three,
13:48and then choosing one to buy.
13:50But as many have long suspected, there's not actually much hunting to be found on House
13:53Hunters.
13:54People involved with the show have come forward throughout the years, claiming that they had
13:57already purchased their house before appearing on the show.
14:00Producers typically have them tour their own recently purchased home, along with two other
14:04random houses they have no intention of buying.
14:06These houses are often volunteer homes, Airbnb rentals, and even places belonging to friends
14:11of the cast and crew.
14:12After touring all three houses, the couple then chooses their own in a stage debate filmed
14:16for the camera.
14:17I definitely like the character of the 50s-style home.
14:20And that dog park for Baxter, that would be so convenient.
14:22If he could just find a way to walk himself there, it'd be perfect.
14:25Jeffrey DeMunn was loyal to Frank Darabont, The Walking Dead.
14:29Dale?
14:30Have you seen Carl?
14:32Shane took him down to the quarry.
14:34There was some mighty bold talk about catching frogs.
14:37It's not rare for shows to diverge from their source material, but this one had many curious
14:41aspects that had fans raising their eyebrows.
14:43Geoffrey DeMunn's Dale Horvath was killed off in a rather abrupt manner, and long before
14:47his print counterpart died in the comics, this was a rather curious decision, but it
14:51also coincided with the controversial departure of showrunner Frank Darabont, who was fired
14:56over budgetary disagreements.
14:57As DeMunn is a regular in Darabont's films, viewers knew the timing wasn't just a crazy
15:01coincidence.
15:02Back in 2018, DeMunn confirmed the theory to Cleveland.com, stating that he quit the show
15:07after Darabont was fired.
15:08Sorry, brother.
15:13The Bill Cosby Problem
15:16The Bill Cosby Show
15:17This sitcom helped define the 1980s with its topical themes, cozy atmosphere, and lead
15:30performance of Bill Cosby, who grew to be known as America's dad.
15:33But there was an intense underlying darkness circulating the show, even if many people didn't
15:38want to believe it.
15:39Rumors swirled that Cosby had a history of sexual violence, a history that stretched back
15:4320 years to the mid-60s.
15:45Women like Joan Tarshish and Wendy Williams made reference to Cosby's sketchy history
15:49while the show was still airing.
15:51And the tabloid National Enquirer ran stories about the allegations.
15:55However, these claims were largely ignored.
15:57It wasn't until 2014 that Cosby's downfall truly began, and we can never return to The
16:02Cosby Show in the same way.
16:12Ending on bad terms, sex in the city.
16:15Carrie Bradshaw and Samantha Jones were a breakthrough for female friendship on TV.
16:19Sadly, that dynamic was plagued by rumors of tensions between Sarah Jessica Parker and
16:29Kim Cattrall, especially over Salary.
16:31I'm going to splash some water on my face and then I'm going home.
16:34And I will not be judged by you or society.
16:37These rumors were confirmed after the series finale.
16:40Paid disputes even factored into the show's end.
16:42Fans thus suspected that Samantha was written out of the Revival series, and just like that,
16:47out of spite.
16:48Well, Parker later announced that Cattrall wasn't even invited to return.
16:51It was simply understood that she wouldn't be interested after begrudgingly doing two
16:55Sex and the City movies.
16:57Luckily for fans, Cattrall made an appearance in the second season of And Just Like That.
17:01Whether Samantha is here to stay may still depend on Cattrall and Parker.
17:09Izzy's Tumor, Grey's Anatomy
17:11Medical residents are known to work unhealthy hours.
17:14Apparently, so are medical show casts.
17:16Playing Dr. Izzy Stevens on Grey's Anatomy, actress Katherine Heigl was termed difficult
17:21to work with and regularly spoke out against onerous working conditions.
17:25Alex!
17:25Hey!
17:27You shouldn't be out here.
17:28Dr. Birk needs to go to me.
17:29Can you just back off, please?
17:30In 2008, she withdrew her name from Emmy consideration because she felt her role was underwritten.
17:35So the following season, Izzy was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
17:39Co-star James Pickens Jr. soon confirmed popular suspicions that this art was written to keep
17:43Heigl in line.
17:44My hair's starting to fall out.
17:47You still look good.
17:49Izzy just happened to make a remarkable recovery after Heigl's contract negotiations.
17:53Her on-set antics still got her axed after season 6, but she's now more critical of her
17:58own behavior than the show.
17:59I'm so glad.
18:01Ah, I'm so glad.
18:03It's like it never happened.
18:06Fake Cash
18:07Cash Cab
18:08The fast-paced quiz show Cash Cab played to the fantasy that anyone could win big at
18:12any moment.
18:14Riders in the Cab won money from host Ben Bailey based on correct answers to a series of questions.
18:18Congratulations!
18:20Here's your 3,000 bucks!
18:22Many viewers assumed that contestants' winnings didn't actually come in cash.
18:26Sure enough, the dollar bills that winners flashed at the camera were props.
18:29They later received their prize money by mailed checks for tax purposes.
18:33That is, if they didn't void their winnings by divulging production secrets.
18:37Congratulations, you guys.
18:38You were great.
18:38Oh my gosh!
18:40Nice to meet you, man.
18:41Cash Cab was serious about its illusions.
18:43Some contestants have even defied the NDA to reveal that they were recruited before entering
18:47Bailey's taxi.
18:49But the prop bills perfectly reflect how Cash Cab is deceptive down to the title.
18:53Alright, congratulations, ladies.
18:54Here's your 1,200 bucks.
18:57Sometimes You Gotta Go
19:00Cheers
19:00Carla Tortelli's abrasive personality is more endearing to Cheers fans than the show's
19:05characters.
19:06The single mother's lonely days seemed over when she married Eddie LeBeck, until he died
19:11in a freak Zamboni accident.
19:12Can't go to graduation, huh?
19:13No, he can't.
19:14What's the excuse?
19:16He's dead.
19:16This dark and bizarre twist was so removed from Cheers' tone that viewers suspected
19:21vindictiveness behind it.
19:22Eddie's actor, Jay Thomas, had jokingly lamented kissing Rhea Perlman on a radio show he hosted.
19:27He himself theorized that this comment got him fired.
19:30I say let's get on with the honeymoon, eh?
19:33In 2006, a writer on the show revealed that Perlman did in fact have Eddie written off to
19:38spite Thomas.
19:39Eddie was even posthumously outed as a polygamist con man.
19:42Though Thomas claimed he meant to insult Carla rather than her actress, he should have watched
19:46his words.
19:47I'm Eddie's poor grieving widow.
19:50That's impossible.
19:51See this?
19:52Yeah?
19:52Well, see this?
19:53Leno steals the show.
19:55The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
19:56With NBC's Late Night with David Letterman considered a worthy lead-in from Johnny Carson,
20:01Letterman was poised to succeed Carson upon his retirement in 1992.
20:05Instead, comedian Jay Leno took over The Tonight Show.
20:08This sparked enormous controversy among audiences and within the industry.
20:12Let's see how you all feel in 30 years.
20:14As Leno had become Carson's resident guest host, many suspected a backroom deal to oust
20:19Letterman.
20:19It wasn't until the 2021 docuseries, The Story of Late Night, when it was revealed that Leno
20:24really did have a secret succession contract.
20:27Jay Leno had just signed a new deal that guaranteed Jay The Tonight Show whenever Johnny stepped
20:36down.
20:36Letterman's conflicts with NBC executives actually cinched this deal.
20:40Though Leto overcame his initial rating slump to become as big as CBS's Letterman, the
20:45two have been feuding ever since Leno's deal was just speculation.
20:48And from that day on, Jay Leno and The Tonight Show are number one.
20:53The Late Night Crown is back at NBC.
20:56Good Guy Gordon.
20:57Hell's Kitchen.
20:58Hey, hey, hey Red Team.
21:00This is painful.
21:01Who just gave me them?
21:03Who cooked them?
21:03Gordon Ramsay is hailed as one of the most popular chefs in the world and one of the
21:07biggest jerks on TV.
21:09Especially in its American adaptation, Ramsay hosts the aptly named Hell's Kitchen with
21:14deliciously diabolical intensity.
21:16Look at me.
21:16I've got one big message for you.
21:18Hey, you!
21:19Get out.
21:19Many fans are skeptical that he's really bringing that much heat.
21:23He is notably more reserved on such other shows as MasterChef.
21:26True, Ramsay has a share of views with other celebrity chefs, but his TV apprentices assert that
21:30he's a great and patient mentor.
21:32He also has a reputation of being devoted to family, philanthropy, and fans.
21:37The caricature of his perfectionism is just an entertaining alter ego.
21:40As cranky as Ramsay does get when his restaurants lag in quality, he clearly takes his brand
21:45seriously.
21:46Fire was your best service.
21:48Yes, eggs.
21:48I don't care about that.
21:50What do you mean?
21:51The Puppy Episode.
21:52Ellen.
21:53As a 90s sitcom star, Ellen DeGeneres was a popular figure but also the subject of rampant
21:58rumors about her sexuality.
21:59There was intense speculation about whether she was gay and if her personal orientation
22:04would have any effect on her sitcom's character.
22:06What if I said something shocking to you?
22:07Like, my whole life has been a lie and I'm really left-handed.
22:12The strict secrecy surrounding production of the cryptically named Puppy Episode led
22:17many to suspect something big.
22:18Indeed, the episode followed Ellen Morgan's realization that she's gay.
22:22Susan, I'm gay.
22:24Perhaps not so coincidentally, DeGeneres herself came out on the cover of Time Magazine at about
22:30the time the episode aired.
22:31Sadly, the backlash and boycott resulted in Ellen's cancellation the next year.
22:36ABC's important breakthrough was soured by the refusal to fight for it.
22:39For the first time in my life, I feel comfortable with myself.
22:44So Bad It's Good TV.
22:46American Idol.
22:46It's no secret that American Idol hopefuls have mere seconds to wow scouts and producers
22:51in a series of preliminary auditions.
22:53The real mystery is how a lot of so-called singers get past that round.
22:57The popular theory was that the producers included some of the worst auditions for comic relief.
23:07Indeed, American Idol's strange or downright terrible singers are such a phenomenon that
23:11televised auditions were arranged around that trope.
23:14Sheep bass!
23:14Sheep bass!
23:16Oh, baby!
23:17When she moves!
23:18She moves!
23:19However, out of concern that this tradition was exploitative, producer Trish Kinane ended
23:23it with the show's 2018 revival.
23:25American Idol is popular and entertaining enough without having to publicly humiliate people.
23:29Oh, I'll tell you goodnight, close the door.
23:36Playing Matchmaker.
23:38The Bachelor.
23:39Romance on The Bachelor tends to be polarizing.
23:42It's also meticulously manufactured.
23:44Producers plan dates, arrange interactions, and basically keep the cast trapped.
23:48Cynics have long suspected that even The Bachelor's decisions are predetermined.
23:52Tanner, will you accept this role?
23:54Hey, Will.
23:56In 2018, former executive producer Scott Jeffries confirmed that contestants really are advanced
24:01or eliminated partially based on audience response.
24:04Contestant-turned-bachelorette Ali Fedotowski claimed that this practice extends to the spinoffs.
24:09I need some scissors.
24:10That's lovely.
24:11There are assurances that producers only completely control how rose ceremonies play out, and that
24:16their influence on stars declines as the competition progresses.
24:19Of course, the unfair pressure placed on these courtships is well-documented.
24:23Directly or indirectly, Bachelor Nation's controversial love stories give too much agency to off-screen
24:29cupids.
24:29Will you accept this, Rose?
24:31I am thrilled to accept this, Rose.

24:47The Quiz Show Scandal 21
24:51Quiz shows were popular TV programs in the 1950s.
24:55NBC's 21 was a big hit, especially for the rivalry between Charles Van Doren and Herbert
25:00Stemple.
25:01A defeated Stemple later upended public perception of the show by claiming that it was extensively
25:06staged.
25:06Then you'll win $20,000.
25:09Congratulations.
25:10On top of confirming that 21 contestants were given answers and choreographed for drama,
25:14congressional investigations discovered that most Quiz Shows were rigged.
25:18The scandal was so immense that it basically killed the genre.
25:21Jeopardy revived it in 64 with gameplay that made it hard to cheat.
25:25Still, after being immortalized by Robert Redford's Quiz Show, the 1950s rigging trend is considered
25:30one of the most scandalous TV conspiracies ever.
25:33That is, among the ones we know of.
25:34Thank you for being a wonderful...
