00:00Great champions, Mikhail Batvinnik and Tigran Petrosyan.
00:05As you can see, white has a material advantage, it's an extra exchange, but black has some compensation.
00:11And Batvinnik, who was pressing in his game, misplayed at one point and eventually made a blunder.
00:21Happens even in the game for great players.
00:23And here, Petrosyan delivered the final blow by using a few themes, but one quiet move, bishop e4.
00:38And white has resigned, because this bishop is overloaded.
00:44It's a deadly pin, an absolute pin, because the king is here, and rook cannot be protected.
00:50So white has to take on e4, and then rook takes on e2, and white position collapses.
00:56And if you take on d2, then after ed2, it's an amazing situation, where white rook is dominated,
01:03because it cannot stop this pawn from promoting, and the bishop, which technically controls this square, it's pinned.
01:11So that's why bishop will be eliminated, and the promotion is inevitable.
01:14So, simple, but very effective.
01:18Bishop e4, and white is lost.
01:28And now it's time for a test, for a challenge.
01:33This time, it comes from my own game.
01:36The game I played against Vasily Ivanchuk, another Linares tournament.
01:42Not my best Linares, actually Karpov's best Linares, 1994.
01:46But I played a few nice games, and this is one of them.
01:49Look at this complicated, crazy position.
01:52It was a really crazy opening.
01:54Ivanchuk came up with a novelty in the Phoenix variation.
01:57But I managed to find sort of a good...
