A woman story about him
Transcript
00:00The movie begins as 17-year-old Kat, a shy and troubled photography college student in a small
00:05town, goes about her daily routine. It is immediately seen that she has a bond with
00:10Kat's. At school, she is bullied for her non-traditional romantic choices. Kat is
00:15enthralled by the beauty of a particular girl named April, but she does not act on her feelings.
00:20After school, she watches April closely, and then discovers that April has a boyfriend.
00:25Kat is jealous and disturbed at the sight of them kissing. The next day,
00:29at a skate park, Kat is taking pictures of random people for her class project.
00:34She stumbles upon April and her boyfriend kissing, and she decides to photograph them.
00:38April notices this but does not raise an alarm. The next day in school, Kat hears for Elise playing
00:44on a violin. She is drawn to this beautiful sound and goes in to peep. To her pleasant surprise,
00:50it is April who is fingering the instrument. Kat gets lost in its notes, and eventually,
00:56April catches her staring. When Kat realizes that she has been made, she scrambles to the safety of
01:02the dark room where she had previously been processing photos of April. April follows her
01:07to the dark room. As Kat hides, April discovers pictures of herself. She doesn't get angry. Instead,
01:13she finds the fact that Kat has been taking nice pictures of her endearing. April leaves when she
01:18concludes that Kat is too shy to come out. That evening, on Getting Home, Kat reminisces about the
01:24close call with April. She ponders April's beauty and eventually touches herself in the shower,
01:28envisioning her sweet, sweet April. In the next scene, April is canoodling with her boyfriend,
01:34but she seems a little uncomfortable. She doesn't even let him go third base. She stops him before
01:40things go further and leaves, giving the excuse that her mom needs her attention. Before she goes,
01:45he sees the photo Kat took and questions her about it. April does not make a big deal of the photo,
01:50but her boyfriend is suspicious of the camera's angle on April. April waves off his worries.
01:55The next day, before Kat reaches school, she takes a detour to the hospital to visit her ailing mom.
02:01Her mom appears terribly ill, but is of a strong mind. Kat also puts on a brave face as she tends to
02:06her mother. It is implied that her father passed away sometime before the movie's plot. Later that day,
02:12the artistic Kat is sketching April-inspired images at the cafeteria during recess,
02:17and to her shock, April meets her and strikes up a conversation. When asked, Kat refuses to tell
02:23April she was sketching her. Then April asks a more direct question about why Kat has been taking
02:28pictures of her. Kat is tongue-tied, but April thinks she doesn't want to talk to her. April
02:33apologizes for taking the photo from the darkroom and is about to leave, but Kat summons the courage to
02:38speak. She offers that April keep the photo, and April is delighted by this. She then asks April to
02:44hang out later that night at the movies. April agrees, and Kat is ecstatic, but her joy is
02:49short-lived. April asks if she could bring her boyfriend along, and Kat doesn't want to scare
02:53her off, so she agrees. That night at the movies, the girls unconsciously lean into each other and
02:59enjoy each other's warmth. April's boyfriend notices this and draws her closer to himself.
03:04April is not too pleased about this, but she doesn't complain. April then steps outside to get
03:08something. Her boyfriend uses the opportunity to confront Kat. He tries to sugarcoat his words,
03:14but it is clear that he bears animosity for Kat, because he has figured out that it is she who took
03:19the photo. The next day, Kat overhears April and her boyfriend arguing at the parking lot.
03:24April is angry that he didn't even make an effort to be civil with Kat, and he tells her that he wants
03:29her to break connections with Kat. Suddenly he gets physically intrusive, and Kat steps in to defend
03:34her new friend. But the boyfriend calls her a homophobic slur and knocks her to the ground.
03:39When April screams, he begs for forgiveness. April doesn't give him a favorable answer. Instead,
03:44she offers to help Kat tend to her injuries. They go over to April's home, and she applies first aid
03:49to Kat's wound. It is here that she expressly questions if Kat fancies her. Kat being overwhelmed
03:55with emotion is tongue-tied. April notices her distress and tells her that she doesn't mind at all,
04:00and that she thinks it is quite sweet, actually. As soon as April finishes patching Kat up,
04:05her parents Jim and Sally arrive. Jim is more welcoming towards Kat, but Sally is snobbish
04:10and quite cruel. April dislikes her mother's attitude and storms off, leading Kat up to her
04:15room. The girls get to know more about each other. It is revealed that Kat's camera once belonged to
04:20her dad, and when asked, April agrees to be the subject of Kat's project. As the days roll by,
04:26April lets Kat capture her portrait from different angles and in different locations. The girls bond
04:32further, as Kat teaches April the development process of photography. Some time later, the
04:37girls take a break and look at their handiwork. April suggests that Kat should use the photo
04:42featuring both of them for her class presentation. Kat says she cannot, because she would be mocked
04:47for her orientation. April then asks what it's like being gay. Kat understandably doesn't have a
04:53straight answer to that. April then asks if Kat fantasizes about girls, to which Kat replies
04:58in the affirmative. April pushes a bit further with a naughty glint in her eye. She asks if Kat
05:04fantasizes about her. Kat is stunned by this, but then quickly recovers and lies that she has never
05:09fantasized about April. In the next scene, Kat is with her ill mother. Her mother worries about the
05:14fact that Kat stays alone at home. Kat pacifies her mother by saying that she is okay, and in fact,
05:20that she has met someone kind, beautiful, and smart. Her mother knowingly smiles and says the person
05:26sounds special, and Kat agrees. Meanwhile, April's boyfriend notices that she is growing distant from
05:32him, and she keeps coming up with excuses about being busy in order not to hang out with him.
05:36This hurts him. A lot. Especially when he sees April being cozy with Kat. Soon, April asks Kat to go
05:43clubbing with her one night. Kat initially refuses, but after much persuasion from April, which may have
05:48involved some tickles, Kat finally agrees to go. That night, as the girls party at the club, they grow closer,
05:54but they ditch the club earlier than expected because of a mishap. They then go swimming.
05:59At the end of the night, the girls go to Kat's home. They have heartfelt conversations. Kat reveals
06:04that her father passed away a few years ago, and her mother has been diagnosed with lung cancer.
06:10She jokes that her mother's condition has not dissuaded her from using cigarettes.
06:14She shares to the point of tears, and April cuddles her to sleep. They snuggle till the next morning.
06:19April leaves in a hurry, because she has an appointment with her mother. Kat sees her off,
06:23and then the girls walk hand in hand as they go. April's boyfriend sees them from his car around
06:29the corner, and is miffed. At home, April's mom nags on about how much of a bad influence Kat is.
06:35Her dad, on the other hand, has taken a liking to Kat, but notes that she's quite shy and quiet.
06:40Sally forbids April from ever seeing Kat again. But Jim encourages his daughter to go after what
06:45she wants and to follow her heart. April leans into her father's advice. In the next scene,
06:51Kat receives a call from the hospital that her mother is in critical condition.
06:55After her hospital visit, Kat goes straight to April's place. April consoles her and asks her
07:00to stay the night. Soon, the air between them heats up. They kiss passionately, and then make love.
07:06The next morning, Sally walks in on them asleep and cuddling in bed. She loses it,
07:11and angrily chases Kat away. She drags Kat down the stairs and kicks her out. April attempts to
07:17pacify Kat, but Kat refuses comfort and runs away from her. Kat goes home and is understandably
07:23frustrated. She lashes out at her room and destroys some sketches and pictures inspired by April.
07:28Meanwhile, April has a fight with her mom over her own romantic orientation. In the following days,
07:34Kat keeps her distance from April. It is unclear why, and April laments about this to her father.
07:39Her father encourages her to try harder in reaching out to a pained and confused Kat.
07:44April goes to Kat's home and sees the torn sketches and pictures. She tries to reach out
07:49to Kat by apologizing and explaining that her mom is a meddlesome person. April tries to express that
07:55she cares for Kat, but Kat sends her out without giving her a listening ear. It appears Kat is trying
08:00to shut April out so that there's no avenue for her to ever feel hurt by rejection anymore.
08:05April leaves tearfully. Her boyfriend, or perhaps ex-boyfriend at this point, drives up to her.
08:10She initially pays him no mind, but eventually takes up his offer for a lift.
08:15He says he would take her home, but then takes a detour. Suddenly, they are at a convenient spot
08:19according to him, where they could patch up the things that went wrong between them.
08:23He leans in for a kiss, and she obliges. When he wants to go further, she prevents him,
08:28but he attempts to force himself on her. After a brief struggle, she weakens him by hitting his
08:33cucumber. As he is in pain, she uses the opportunity to run away from the car.
08:37Meanwhile, Kat realizes that she has stupidly hurt the one person she cares about,
08:43and who cares about her too. She takes her bicycle and chases after April.
08:47She takes the route leading to April's home, but miraculously, or conveniently makes the same
08:52detour April's boyfriend did earlier. On getting close, she sees the car and its open doors.
08:57She also sees the hoodie that she had gifted April on the ground. This spells danger, and she knows it.
09:03The scene shifts to the continuing tussle between April and her ex. They are on the bare floor,
09:08their skin muddied. He strenuously wants to get in her pants. Meanwhile, Kat frantically searches for
09:15April. She's running from edge to edge, and is almost out of breath. Unfortunately, the boy gets his way.
09:21He forcefully sticks himself inside April and Kat, with whatever help she may offer, is too late.
09:27Kat suddenly pushes the boy off April. He and Kat fall downhill. When they both come too,
09:32he advances, and hits Kat. To defend herself, she uses her camera to hit him on the head.
09:38He drops to the floor immediately, and she runs away to her dear April.
09:42April is severely traumatized and sensitive to touch. Kat painstakingly shows April that she means
09:47no harm. She gives April the hoodie that she found on the floor earlier. It is then that April becomes
09:53tethered to the present once more, and accepts a consolation hug from Kat. The girls tearfully stay
09:58that way, in each other's arms. April, reliving the trauma, cries her heart out. The ex-boyfriend
10:04finally comes and approaches them. He drops to his knees a few meters from them, and cries.
10:10He sobs uncontrollably, but nobody feels sorry for him. In the next scene, Kat and April walk to Kat's
10:16apartment in their dirtied clothes. They lay on Kat's bed, and on their sides, facing each other.
10:22April is still draped in the hoodie Kat gifted her. Kat comforts April by rubbing her arm,
10:26and they hold hands.
