00:00It's Armed Forces Day today. What does a day like this mean to you?
00:04Why is it so important celebrating our forces and our veterans like yourself?
00:08Why is it important?
00:09It's great to see so many people here today.
00:13It surprised me that so many people have come forward to celebrate the Armed Forces Day.
00:25Anyway, it's great to be here and see so many people.
00:33And tell me a little bit about your service. Where were you based and where did you serve?
00:401945, I was in Norway. 1943, I was in Egypt. Just two different contrasts.
00:55I've been all over.
01:00And what was Egypt like? What were you involved in, in Egypt?
01:05Preparing for the Second Front.
01:09I was practicing briefly on the beach at a place called HMS Dundonald.
01:25HMS Dundonald, in peace time, was the Buckley Dundonald.
01:32But in wartime, it was the HMS Dundonald.
01:37You were in the Royal Engineers. What did you do? What was your role? What was your job?
01:43The role I had, driving bridges about. Barely bridges.
01:58We crossed every river in the south of England with a barely bridge.
02:16And celebrating a day like the Armed Forces Day, why is it right that we remember your service and the service of those that are no longer with us?
02:28These friends of mine, not mine, was Ernie Stein, Billy, Billy Harrison, both gone. My schoolmates.
02:45And er, I shan't see them anymore. They were shot down.
02:55Billy Jack, Billy Harrison, went across on one of the first thousand bomber raids and waited to give permission to land to refill it.
03:14And he crashed. So therefore he did his job, but couldn't get any petrol, any fuel to carry on.
