Undercover cop John Franklin infiltrates a crime syndicate being run by the incarcerated mob boss Rocky Thorpe. Thorpe conducts his business via a short-wave radio concealed in his cell. One day before his scheduled release Thorpe is placed in solitary confinement and Franklin, Thorpe's physical double, takes his place. Soon changes in the gang's activities are subtly made. As Thorpe, Franklin orders the mob to keep careful records of their activities, to gather enough evidence to convict them all. Trouble ensues when Rocky escapes from jail.

00:01:15Well, Doc, can we talk to him now?
00:01:45Yeah, I guess it won't make any difference. If he's going to talk at all, he'd better do it now.
00:01:51Who did it, Lefty?
00:01:53You're through, Lefty. You're going to die. Who were they?
00:01:58What happened to Joe and Louie?
00:02:02Well, they got all of them. Who did it?
00:02:07Rocky's boys. I hope they rot. Rocky Thorpe's boys.
00:02:16The man's delirious. Rocky Thorpe's been out of circulation for five years.
00:02:21I wonder.
00:02:29You forget Rocky Thorpe is still up the river. I prosecuted him myself.
00:02:33Well, he may be locked up, but this sure looks like his technique.
00:02:38Just like they handled those Bailey boys in that bookie joint a few years ago.
00:02:42Alrighty, Inspector.
00:02:43That's all.
00:02:47That's all.
00:02:58Alright, next group.
00:03:00Take your half off.
00:03:10Alright, next.
00:03:16Your half.
00:03:18Next.
00:03:24How are we doing?
00:03:25Your half.
00:03:28Ladies and gentlemen, the radio audience is about to hear.
00:03:31Quiet!
00:03:33Well, boys, it's nice seeing you again.
00:03:37Nice to see you too, Captain.
00:03:38Quiet!
00:03:40Guess you fellows don't by any chance play pool down to Maddox, do you?
00:03:45We'll take these three.
00:03:50Hold Dapper Malare, Tombstone, and Panatella for further questioning.
00:03:55Uh, have a cigar?
00:04:05Sure.
00:04:09Hiya, man.
00:04:13Well, rather neat work last night, wasn't it, boys?
00:04:17I don't think we know what you mean, Mr.
00:04:19I think he must be talking about that massacre over at that pool hall.
00:04:22Oh, yeah.
00:04:23We read about it this morning.
00:04:25Too bad.
00:04:26Nice skies, too.
00:04:28It's a good thing we was up to a movie, or they might have thought we had something to do with it.
00:04:33Some swell picture up at the E-light, wasn't it, Tombstone?
00:04:36Yeah.
00:04:37One of them ganked the pictures.
00:04:38Yeah, hot stuff, boys.
00:04:42Yeah, you're kinda handy with that thing, aren't you, Panatella?
00:04:45Me? No.
00:04:46Skip the preliminary, Sullivan.
00:04:47What's the beef?
00:04:48You've come a long way since you were a stooge for Rocky Thorpe.
00:04:51You thought?
00:04:52Kinda took over for him without losing a trick, didn't you?
00:04:55Didn't lose a customer, I bet.
00:04:57Clip joints.
00:04:58Bookie stands.
00:04:59Slot machines.
00:05:00Everything.
00:05:01With a few killings thrown in.
00:05:03Listen, you.
00:05:04Get up.
00:05:05You've been very lucky up to now.
00:05:07And you and some other so-called big shots think you've got this town in the sack.
00:05:11You think you've got to chop each other down to protect your rackets, do you?
00:05:16Well, the state's got a way of chopping down, too.
00:05:20You're going up to where your boss is.
00:05:22Good old Rocky.
00:05:23Is he still up there?
00:05:24Look, Copper, you're talking in circles.
00:05:26Lay the beef on the line.
00:05:27Sure, Dapper.
00:05:29I'm charging the three of you with homicide.
00:05:31Lock him up.
00:05:33What a laugh.
00:05:35Come on.
00:05:37No hard feelings, buddy.
00:05:39Why, no.
00:05:42Who are you?
00:05:47Good morning, gentlemen.
00:05:48Good morning.
00:05:49What do you want here?
00:05:50You, uh, picked up three boys last night, Inspector.
00:05:54Well, you don't mind, do you?
00:05:57They haven't done anything.
00:05:58I give you my word they haven't.
00:05:59I know just how you feel, Phillips.
00:06:01What you mean is they're really good boys at heart.
00:06:03Just a little mischievous.
00:06:05Oh, go on, Phillips.
00:06:06Get out of here.
00:06:07I'm busy.
00:06:08You're supposed to be your lawyer.
00:06:09You know better than to come in here.
00:06:11I have a little paper for you, Inspector.
00:06:13A court order for the boys' release.
00:06:16You work fast, don't you?
00:06:17One has to work fast to get ahead of you, Mr. District Attorney.
00:06:25Well, I give up.
00:06:29You bring in the right guys, and what happens?
00:06:32Sprung before they miss a meal.
00:06:34Now, we're kidding ourselves trying to crack that outfit.
00:06:38And if Rocky Thorpe isn't still the head man,
00:06:41well, then I'll do nip-ups in Times Square.
00:06:43How a man in jail can keep in communication with the outside,
00:06:47I don't know.
00:06:49But it sure seems as if your hunch was right.
00:06:57All right, turn him over.
00:06:58Hello, W9-ENG, calling W9-ENG.
00:07:07This is W9-ETD calling W9-ENG on shortwave phone and standing by.
00:07:14Come in, please, if you're getting me.
00:07:16Hello, W9-ETD.
00:07:18W9-ENG coming back to you.
00:07:20An 80-meter band.
00:07:22You're coming in fine, old man.
00:07:23Go ahead, W9-ETD.
00:07:24W9-ETD.
00:07:26W9-ETD coming back to you, W9-ENG.
00:07:29How are you, Bill, old boy?
00:07:31Everything's fine here.
00:07:33We had a little trouble, but it's all straightened out now.
00:07:36That's good, Jim.
00:07:38How's everything working out?
00:07:40Hey, was that your outfit making all that noise last night?
00:07:42Yeah, I guess it was.
00:07:45I followed your advice and tried out those new tubes.
00:07:48They're a little noisy, but they sure did the work.
00:07:51Good work, Jim. How many did you get?
00:07:52I only got the smaller ones.
00:07:55I wanted to get the whole set, but I couldn't make it.
00:07:58I couldn't get the main one.
00:08:00By the way, Bill, I understand that fellow uptown is figuring out enlarging his set, putting on more power.
00:08:06Might interfere with our reception.
00:08:09What do you think I ought to do about it, Bill?
00:08:11There you go again, Rocky.
00:08:17Always getting point up at that guy.
00:08:20If he gets you so sore, why do you listen to him every night?
00:08:23Nearly five years we've been bunkies together, and I still can't figure you out.
00:08:26It's pretty late to be starting now.
00:08:29You're going to be lonesome when you leave here.
00:08:32Won't be long now, will it, Rocky?
00:08:34No. Won't be long.
00:08:37The laundry service in this college ain't what it used to be.
00:08:40That's what you think.
00:08:42You got to pay for Duluth's service, Pinhead.
00:08:45The kind I've been getting.
00:09:10Convicted on racketeering charges five years ago, Rocky Thorpe, profuted gang leader, leaves state prison next morning.
00:09:28Depending on the completion of his sentence, he's being carefully guarded against attack by his fellow prisoners, with whom it is reported he is extremely unpopular.
00:09:48I guess that five years hasn't changed it very much.
00:09:52He'll pick up right where he left off, if Maddock doesn't get him first.
00:09:55Maddock will try, you can be sure of that.
00:09:58He isn't the kind to sit back and let Rocky's organization take care of half a dozen of his best men.
00:10:03If it was Rocky's bunch.
00:10:05Well, it was.
00:10:06When he gets out, you'll find that he moves right in at the old stands.
00:10:10You said it.
00:10:16Thorpe.
00:10:19Relax, you guys.
00:10:20I come here to talk.
00:10:22Keep your hands away from that phone.
00:10:23You get me?
00:10:25Hiya, Sullivan.
00:10:27Remember my telling you nothing could hold Rocky, Thorpe?
00:10:30And you.
00:10:31Remember my telling you what I'd do if you slapped that five-year rap on me?
00:10:35Kind of worries you, don't it?
00:10:37Take it easy.
00:10:39I ain't getting tough if you ain't.
00:10:41This is a business call, see?
00:10:44I got a proposition and you can take it or leave it.
00:10:47Well, it might be smart for you to take it.
00:10:48We don't make deals.
00:10:50If you come in on it, you both can go places.
00:10:53If you don't, well, I believe I got a little surprise for you.
00:10:56Satisfied, Chief?
00:10:57What is this, Sullivan?
00:10:58Meet John Franklin from upstate.
00:10:59How do you do, Mr. Lubin?
00:11:00Enough like him to be his twin brother.
00:11:01Enough like him to be Thorpe himself.
00:11:02Now what's all this about?
00:11:03I'm sorry to pull a gag on you but Franklin talked me into it.
00:11:04He has an idea, I'm afraid it's a little wild.
00:11:06It fooled the district attorney.
00:11:07Yeah, but fooling Thorpe's own men is something else again.
00:11:08Well, it does sound a little wild.
00:11:09What's your idea, Franklin?
00:11:10Mr. Lucas, you're trying to get something on Thorpe and his men.
00:11:11I believe the only way to do it is from the end.
00:11:12Everything to the end is from the end to the end.
00:11:13What's your idea, Franklin?
00:11:14What is the idea?
00:11:15What's your idea, Franklin?
00:11:16Mr. Lucas, you're trying to get something on Thorpe and his men.
00:11:17I believe the only way to do it is from the end of these people.
00:11:18I think you can go through and find a good idea.
00:11:19I hope you can't do that.
00:11:21What's your idea, Franklin?

00:18:12Now, what smart guy tipped off the papers?
00:18:15Well, I knew you had a lot of other things on your mind, Dapper, so I arranged for the reception committee myself.
00:18:19Why, you birdbrain.
00:18:21For two cents, I'd...
00:18:23Get these guys away from Rocky.
00:18:25Come on.
00:18:26So long, lifers.
00:18:31You'll be readin' about me.
00:18:33Yeah, in the funeral notice.
00:18:34How about a statement, Rocky?
00:18:35Where do you go?
00:18:36I'm here, Rocky.
00:18:36Look this way.
00:18:38Come on, Tombstone.
00:18:39You're lookin' swell, Rocky.

00:18:42Let me get in, Rocky.
00:18:42Later, boys.
00:18:43Later.
00:18:43Later.

00:18:51Give it a little statement.
00:18:51How's that for a gag, Rocky?
00:19:02Just like old times, eh?
00:19:06Come on, get goin'.
00:19:07Gee, boss, you ain't lost your touch at all.
00:19:10Come on.
00:19:19Been a long while, Rocky.
00:19:21I'll be makin' up for it.
00:19:23Don't worry, boss.
00:19:24We ain't been losing any time.
00:19:26Everything's been handled,
00:19:27just like you've been telling us right along.
00:19:29That reminds me.
00:19:30Remember that last message you sent?
00:19:32Yeah.
00:19:32You didn't figure it could read two ways.
00:19:34Which way did you mean?
00:19:36I got it.
00:19:37It's gonna be a new deal from now on.
00:19:39Hey, Dapper, ain't that car behind one of Maddox?
00:19:44Slow down and let him come up even.
00:19:46We'll throw a little party for him.
00:19:47Wait a minute.
00:19:48I'm runnin' the show now.
00:19:50Step on it.
00:19:51You better start blasting, Rocky.
00:20:12No fireworks.
00:20:13I got other plans, Mamanic.
00:20:14Now, slam on your brakes.
00:20:38So you finally caught up with us, Neely.
00:20:40How do you like it?
00:20:40Honest, Dapper, we didn't know that was your car up ahead.
00:20:43No, you hoped it was our hoist.
00:20:44No, we were tryin' to shake off some speed cops.
00:20:46They're right behind.
00:20:47Shake that off.
00:20:48Why don't you learn how to drive?
00:20:50Get busy and help straighten out them fenders.
00:20:54Hello, Neely.
00:20:55Too bad Maddox ain't with you.
00:20:57Understand he wants to see me.
00:20:59Well, I want to see him.
00:21:00In the morgue?
00:21:01Shut up, you.
00:21:02I can't do business in those stiffs.
00:21:04And I want to do business, see?
00:21:05Get me?
00:21:06You mean business?
00:21:07Yeah, business.
00:21:08Dollars and cents.
00:21:09No more of this cowboy stuff.
00:21:12I'm gonna be at the truck tonight at nine o'clock, and I want him there.
00:21:15If we don't show him, I'm comin' after him, see?
00:21:17You want we should tell him that?
00:21:18Yeah, you tell him that straight from Rocky Thorpe.
00:21:21Let him go, boys.
00:21:23Well, honey, I like that.
00:21:25Rocky's lettin' him get out alive.
00:21:27Yeah.
00:21:28It's a wonder he didn't give me each a five-spot.
00:21:36I gotta hand it to you, Rocky, using them for a build-up so we could get Maddox over there.
00:21:40Don't get me wrong, Dapper.
00:21:41I'm levelin'.
00:21:42From now on, the rough stuff's out.
00:21:44What's the idea, Rocky?
00:21:45Told you guys I had other plans.
00:21:47There's no percentage in battlin' that guy when you can make a deal with him.
00:21:50You didn't think that way a month ago when you sent word to start shovin' Maddox around.
00:21:54What changed your mind?
00:21:55Do I have to give reasons to you guys?
00:21:57Since when are you tellin' me how to run my racket?
00:22:00Now, you don't have to get sore about it, Rocky.
00:22:01Listen, you birds.
00:22:02What do you think I was doin' when I was up there?
00:22:04I was doin' some heavy thinkin', see?
00:22:07The college I went to is one place that's smartin' you up.
00:22:10Yeah, that's my trouble.
00:22:11No education.
00:22:12Now, if I only had your opportunity...
00:22:14Shut up.
00:22:15Shut up.
00:22:15Thanks, boys.
00:22:31That's a knockout.
00:22:34Hiya, fellas.
00:22:34Hi, Rocky.
00:22:36Hello, Charlie.
00:22:38Glad to see you back, sir.
00:22:39I'm glad to be back after five years in the piano box.
00:22:43Hey, where's the king?
00:22:45Al Benson's takin' him for a walk in the park, sir.
00:22:47Al's a new boy, Rocky, but he's all right.
00:22:49Yeah, he'd rather lose his right arm than his chance to make good with you.
00:22:53Ambitious, huh?
00:23:09Fresh air, boys.
00:23:10That's what I want.
00:23:11Plenty of sunshine and fresh air.
00:23:16Hiya, fellas.
00:23:17Where's the boss?
00:23:19Hey, look, King.
00:23:22That's Rocky.
00:23:34What's the matter with you, King?
00:23:36Funny, he doesn't seem to know you.
00:23:38Five years is a long time.
00:23:40They say elephants never forget.
00:23:42But then, of course, King ain't quite an elephant.
00:23:46Must be the smell of these stir-clothes this day, Jimmy.
00:23:48Sure, a dog's memory ain't in his brain.
00:23:50It's in his nose.
00:24:00Bedroom's over here, Rocky.
00:24:03Hey, I'm all turned around here.
00:24:05What have you done to this place?
00:24:06Dapper's had the inside's interior decorated.
00:24:08Didn't you notice?
00:24:09Yeah, I'm getting stupid.
00:24:18You're Al Benson.
00:24:20Yeah, I'm sure glad to know you, Rocky.
00:24:22I heard a lot about you.
00:24:23Want to be a big shot, huh?
00:24:25I'll never be the guy you are, Rocky.
00:24:27But I'm in there trying.
00:24:28Maybe you ain't in yet.
00:24:32We'll talk later.
00:24:32Hey, Charlie.
00:24:41Fill up that badge, huh?
00:24:42When I say fill it up, I mean fill it up.
00:24:44Yes, Mr. Bowman.
00:24:45What did I tell you guys?
00:25:09Good boy.
00:25:10No wonder he didn't know me.
00:25:12That a boy.
00:25:21What do you want, Rocky?
00:25:22Let's try that light gray one.
00:25:25Yeah, they're all new.
00:25:26Dapper picked out the materials himself.
00:25:28Thanks, Dapper.
00:25:29Hug you.
00:25:32Yeah?
00:25:32Oh, hello.
00:25:36Yeah, sure, he's here.
00:25:38Come on over.
00:25:39It's Arquid, boss.
00:25:41Great girl, Arquid.
00:25:44Come on, you mugs.
00:25:45You gonna scram or do you want me to give you a hint?
00:25:46Come on.
00:26:02Well, Rocky.
00:26:30Let me look at you.
00:26:31It's been such a long time.
00:26:35Yeah, it's been a long time.
00:26:39You don't seem the same, Rocky.
00:26:41Well, I guess five years does make a difference.
00:26:46How's Bartle and a drink?
00:26:49Yes, that might help some.
00:26:54Amy Madison.
00:26:56Same as usual.
00:27:01My taste don't change very much, you know.
00:27:04Yeah, sure.
00:27:12Well?
00:27:16To us?
00:27:17Sure, kid.
00:27:18To us.
00:27:22Rocky, it's bourbon.
00:27:23Yeah, it ain't bad either, is it?
00:27:25I've been waiting a long time for this.
00:27:27I still don't like bourbon.
00:27:29Oh, I forgot.
00:27:32What do you have?
00:27:33The same as always, scotch.
00:27:35Now do you remember?
00:27:37Sure I do.
00:27:38Rocky, there's something wrong.
00:27:54Forget it, kid.
00:27:56I got a lot of things in my mind.
00:27:57For instance.
00:27:59Well, I never did tell you my troubles, did I?
00:28:02No.
00:28:03But you always used to forget them with me.
00:28:06What, kid?
00:28:10You run along home and get yourself dolled up.
00:28:13We're going to the truck tonight, just like old times.
00:28:16Just the two of us, Rocky.
00:28:17Just you and me.
00:28:18Well, I don't know about that.
00:28:20We've got a lot of time to be together.
00:28:22You see, I've got a little business to settle up with, Matic.
00:28:24Matic?
00:28:25Oh, don't worry.
00:28:26It's going to be friendly.
00:28:27I couldn't get Matic on the phone.
00:28:41Well, maybe he's on the way.
00:28:42Give him time.
00:28:43Yeah, give him time and he'll have some of his torpedoes over here.
00:28:57Will you please come to dressing room six?
00:29:05Now, what's Matic doing in dressing room six?
00:29:27Take it easy, kid.
00:29:37It's okay, boss.
00:29:39What's the gag, sister?
00:29:41Yeah, what is the gag?
00:29:43You wanted to see me?
00:29:45Yes, but I hardly expected you to bring your friends with you.
00:29:48Do you suppose they could trust you alone with me for a moment?
00:29:50I ain't so sure.
00:29:52Don't you want I should frisk her, too?
00:29:53Please don't.
00:29:54I'm ticklish.
00:29:56Scrap.
00:29:57Well?
00:30:05I wanted to ask a favor of you, if that's possible.
00:30:07Why not?
00:30:08No harm in asking, is there?
00:30:10Well, I don't know, after the way you busted in here.
00:30:12I have to be careful, sister.
00:30:14Maybe you ain't heard, but I ain't popular with some people.
00:30:16I can understand that.
00:30:18What's on your mind?
00:30:21Look, Mr. Thorpe, you're a big shot.
00:30:22You have your picture in all the newspapers.
00:30:24You kind of like that, huh?
00:30:27I don't like you or anything you stand for.
00:30:33What's all this leading up to?
00:30:35You've got a kid in your organization named Al Benson.
00:30:37Yeah?
00:30:38He'll never be a big shot like you.
00:30:39He hasn't got the brains.
00:30:42He'll probably end up with a bullet in his back.
00:30:44That's tough.
00:30:46Al's your boyfriend, huh?
00:30:48No.
00:30:49My brother.
00:30:50Oh.
00:30:52He can't be very important to you.
00:30:54I wanted to ask you to get rid of him.
00:30:56Sit down.
00:30:57I'll think it over.
00:30:58Rocky won't be back for a while.
00:31:01Then it was Maddox.
00:31:02It's a dame.
00:31:04What'd she want?
00:31:05Your guess is as good as mine.
00:31:11Rocky acts kind of funny, doesn't he?
00:31:14Why do you say that?
00:31:16I don't know.
00:31:17He never used to look at any dame but you.
00:31:22That's life.
00:31:23You wait five years and...
00:31:26I'll see you later.
00:31:28One pot on my nose.
00:31:30You're asking a lot, sister.
00:31:31You see, I got big plans.
00:31:33I can use a good man.
00:31:34But Al's not a man.
00:31:35He's just a boy.
00:31:36He doesn't know what the score is.
00:31:39I didn't hear your knock.
00:31:41You're getting careless, Rocky.
00:31:43You forgot to lock the door.
00:31:44Cut it.
00:31:51Seems to me you could do better than a dime a dozen torch singer.
00:31:54He might.
00:31:55But apparently he hasn't.
00:31:57Listen, smart dame, don't crack at me if you want to stand on your feet.
00:31:59I said cut it, baby.
00:32:01Now beat it.
00:32:03I'm sorry.
00:32:13I guess I talk too much.
00:32:14I like that.
00:32:16You know, you're the first dame that ever stood up to Rocky Thorpe and told him what she thought of guys like him.
00:32:20I could have said more.
00:32:22Sure.
00:32:23How about Al?
00:32:25I'll think it over.
00:32:27Thanks.
00:32:27Where's Orkin?
00:32:33She went home.
00:32:34She had a headache.
00:32:35Yeah, I think it was a red headache.
00:32:37Oh, ain't that too bad.
00:32:40Heard from the medic?
00:32:40Not yet.
00:32:42This came for you, Mr. Thorpe.
00:32:47Remembrance of you, Maddox.
00:32:49Don't open it, boss.
00:32:50It might be a bomb.
00:32:50She's right, Rocky.
00:32:55You better not open it.
00:32:57Can't tell her you open it.
00:32:58Can't tell her you open it.
00:32:58I'll be right there.
00:33:10I'll be right back.
00:33:10I know.
00:33:11I'll be right back.
00:33:12I'll be right back.
00:33:12You want to make some money, Panatella?
00:33:30Here's a job right up your alley.
00:33:32War flyers.
00:33:33A thousand bucks a month for bombing civilians.
00:33:35Gee, it doesn't seem right getting paid for killing people.
00:33:39Then again, it doesn't seem right just to kill them for nothing.
00:33:41You haven't said anything about that other story in there, Rocky.
00:33:45Maddock had his laugh last night.
00:33:47I'm getting mine this morning.
00:33:48I'll say you are.
00:33:49I sent the boys over to let him know he didn't like what happened last night.
00:33:53Who told you to send them over?
00:33:56Who's the boss around here?
00:33:59Who's running this outfit?
00:34:01You are, Rocky.
00:34:02Get those lugs back.
00:34:04Too late. They've been gone half an hour.
00:34:08It's the second time this week you tried to take the play away from me.
00:34:11There's a girl to see you, Mr. Thorpe.
00:34:13What's the idea coming up here?
00:34:14Where's my brother?
00:34:15He was gone when I got up this morning and his gun was missing.
00:34:18Where is he?
00:34:19He went to Maddox with Tombstone and the boys.
00:34:23Where's the kid?
00:34:24Come on, talk up.
00:34:26He sort of got hung up.
00:34:28Quit stalling. Where is he?
00:34:30Maddox got him.
00:34:31Go on.
00:34:32We figured there's no use to crash the pool unless Maddox there, see?
00:34:36Maddox don't know Al's a man.
00:34:37A kind of Al being new with you.
00:34:40So we're smart.
00:34:41We sent Al in to cage the joint.
00:34:43But somebody must have had him spotted.
00:34:45Is there any shooting?
00:34:46Why do you think we left him?
00:34:48Them Maddox cut loose at us with everything but field guns.
00:34:51Rocky, I...
00:34:52Hello, Maddox.
00:34:59This is Rocky Thorpe.
00:35:01Hello, sweetheart.
00:35:02Where are you?
00:35:04I'm still on the west side.
00:35:07Yeah, and it wouldn't surprise me to see a planter there.
00:35:09But never mind that.
00:35:10You got one of my boys over there and I want him.
00:35:14Now what would I be doing with one of your boys, I ask you?
00:35:18All right, Maddox.
00:35:19I'm coming over there to get him.
00:35:20I'm going to have that talk I wanted with you, too, see?
00:35:23I sure got a nice place to talk.
00:35:26Here.
00:35:28Charlie, get my hat.
00:35:32Hold on, boss.
00:35:33You don't understand.
00:35:34Them guys are in a mood for murder.
00:35:35Are you crazy, Rocky?
00:35:36What does this doll and her brother mean to you?
00:35:39They'll get you sure his dice have spot.
00:35:41He's running this show.
00:35:42Stay here, all of you.
00:35:43I'm on my own on this.
00:35:44And you let him do this for your rat of a brother.
00:35:52Uh-uh.
00:35:52Uh-uh.
00:35:52Hello, Rocky.
00:36:17Glad to see you.
00:36:19Here.
00:36:20The boys want to meet you, too.
00:36:22Boys, meet Rocky Thorpe.
00:36:24I didn't come here to be worked over by a lot of cheap hoods, Maddox.
00:36:28Who said anything about working over?
00:36:30Your crowd's a couple of wins ahead of our crowd, that's all.
00:36:34The boys just want to congratulate you, sort of pat you on the back.
00:36:37Before you start anything, you'll be sorry for them, Maddox.
00:36:40Just one question.
00:36:41How long is it since you heard from your family?
00:36:43Come into the office and we'll talk it over.
00:36:50Right.
00:36:58Now, where's that kid?
00:37:00He's outside.
00:37:01You can have him.
00:37:03What did you do with my family?
00:37:04Your family?
00:37:05I didn't do nothing with them.
00:37:07We're just interested.
00:37:08Want to know how they was.
00:37:11Look, Maddox.
00:37:12What'd you want to put out to keep me off the west side?
00:37:15I ain't going to put out nothing.
00:37:17No.
00:37:20You would think so, huh?
00:37:21Listen, Rocky, you're riding kind of high, ain't you?
00:37:24Don't forget, I just slapped Nolan's ears back downtown.
00:37:26Yeah.
00:37:27Nolan, Kruger, you and me, all fighting each other.
00:37:30Look, Maddox.
00:37:31I've been studying up a little on high finance.
00:37:34Big business, when competition gets too expensive, they get together.
00:37:38Yeah?
00:37:38Yeah.
00:37:39We got enough to do battle on the law without fighting each other, and it's getting tougher.
00:37:43You know what's happened?
00:37:45Look, we used to have the county cops, the city police, the state police, and the G-men.
00:37:50None of them too tough by themselves.
00:37:51So what do they do?
00:37:52They get together.
00:37:53No ordination, they call it.
00:37:55One big outfit.
00:37:57But they used to wrap us with one finger, now they sock us with a whole fistful.
00:38:01Okay.
00:38:03Now what happens if we get together?
00:38:05Besides saving the expenses of battling each other, we clear all our legal business, bail bonds, witness payoffs through one office.
00:38:12We operate like them chain stores.
00:38:14We cut down the overhead and give us all a bigger cut.
00:38:16Ah, you're nuts.
00:38:18Them other guys won't fall for it.
00:38:19I'll take care of them.
00:38:21They ain't no dumber than you are.
00:38:22You go for it, don't you?
00:38:24Maybe.
00:38:24Hey, what do you mean, dog?
00:38:28Oh, what did they do to you?
00:38:34He's all right.
00:38:35Take care of him, Charlie.
00:38:39Rocky, how did you do it?
00:38:41Made a deal with Maddox.
00:38:42You know, the one I was telling you about.
00:38:44You mean you actually put it over?
00:38:46Boss, I gotta hand it to you.
00:38:47Don't hand me that.
00:38:48Get over at the office and pass the word to the boys and lay off Maddox.
00:38:51Okay, boss.
00:38:52From now on, we're working together, see?
00:39:05I'm sorry I squawked, hon.
00:39:08It's just that I was afraid, I guess.
00:39:11Oh, don't bawl me out.
00:39:13I've been paid off plenty.
00:39:15I died a dozen times waiting for you.
00:39:18Okay, kid.
00:39:19I got a huddle with the lawyers now.
00:39:24I'll see you later.
00:39:25Tonight?
00:39:27We...
00:39:27We didn't have much time to ourselves last night.
00:39:30Well, kid, I...
00:39:32All right.
00:39:34You don't have to say it.
00:39:35I'm getting wise to where I stand.
00:39:38And no man can treat me this way.
00:39:39Not even you.
00:39:40Dapper, get over to a good jeweler's and fire a hunk of ice.
00:39:51That'll square it.
00:39:52It's a birthday next week.
00:39:53You're smart like me, boss.
00:39:54That's the way I always handle them.
00:39:56Give them a hunk of jewelry, they'll believe anything you want them to.
00:40:00If you want them to.
00:40:01Go on, get busy.
00:40:03I know what you want, boss.
00:40:05That's swell-looking.
00:40:08Scrant.
00:40:18How's the kid?
00:40:19Banged up a little, but he'll be all right.
00:40:22Thanks.
00:40:23Don't thank me, sister.
00:40:24I wasn't thinking about the kid.
00:40:26It's just that nobody can pull anything like that on Rocky Thorpe and get away with it, see?
00:40:30You're a funny guy, Rocky.
00:40:32You got the whole town afraid of you.
00:40:34The newspapers say you're cruel and selfish.
00:40:37Who's your press agent?
00:40:39What?
00:40:39Who's your press agent?
00:40:40Who told you all that stuff about yourself?
00:40:42I ain't no boy scout if that's what you're driving at.
00:40:46Maybe you could have been.
00:40:48I'm doing all right.
00:40:51Yeah, I guess you are.
00:40:55Well, so long, Big Shot.
00:40:58And thanks.
00:40:59I mean it.
00:41:21Hello, Rep.
00:41:21Yes, sir.
00:41:23You got any drinking water?
00:41:23Yeah, it's over there.
00:41:38Relax, you guys.
00:41:40I come here to talk.
00:41:41I've been waiting five years for this, Rocky.
00:41:44I was coming after you, but you saved me the trouble.
00:41:46You're spilling an awful lot, Nolan, for a guy that's talking right into the ears of the coppers.
00:41:51What do you mean?
00:41:51Take the phones, pal.
00:41:53Your joint's wired for sound.
00:41:54You better have the boys look the place over.
00:41:56I got tipped the law who was working here last night after you closed up.
00:42:00So if anything happens to me, they'll know who done it.
00:42:02You get that, coppers?
00:42:03I was just ribbing you, Rocky.
00:42:08Kind of got your go, didn't I?
00:42:09Yeah, you sure did there for a second.
00:42:12I was about a little talk.
00:42:14Sure.
00:42:14Come on in the office.
00:42:15I'll buy you a drink.
00:42:17Find them microphones, you guys.
00:42:19Tear the joint apart if you got to.
00:42:21If it works, it's okay.
00:42:34I'm in.
00:42:35You'll have to handle Kruger, though.
00:42:37I'll handle Kruger, all right.
00:42:40Okay.
00:42:43When do you want to get together?
00:42:44I'll give you a ring in a day or two if we get things lined up.
00:42:46There ain't no wires here.
00:42:58What do you mean, Dick, to phone?
00:43:00Just ribbing you, pal.
00:43:10Get back in there, Kruger.
00:43:12Keep both hands on the wheel.
00:43:13You wouldn't give me that run around for a week.
00:43:15Hard to talk to, ain't you?
00:43:17Well, I didn't get your phone call till this morning, Rocky.
00:43:20Honest, I didn't.
00:43:22I was just coming over to see you.
00:43:24Get back in there and we talk.
00:43:25Come on.
00:43:45Okay, Rocky, I'm in.
00:43:48Give me a ring whenever you want to get together.
00:43:50You'll be hearing from me.
00:43:51So long, pal.
00:43:52Will you have a cigar?
00:43:53Oh, thanks, man.
00:44:02Hello, Rocky.
00:44:03Hiya, coppers.
00:44:05Not so fast.
00:44:06Headquarters wants to talk to you.
00:44:07Hey, listen.
00:44:08If you think a couple of punks like you...
00:44:09Just a jacked up.
00:44:10Coming?
00:44:11Sure.
00:44:12Why not?
00:44:13Back in 20 minutes, fellas.
00:44:16Okay, Rocky.
00:44:16I'll get that by the phone and mouthpiece.
00:44:19They can't do this to Rocky.
00:44:25What is this?
00:44:27What's the idea?
00:44:28Send me a strong arm to pick me up.
00:44:29I'll ask a question, Stork.
00:44:31All right, boys.
00:44:42Cigarette?
00:44:43No, thanks.
00:44:44Believe it or not, I'm beginning to like these things.
00:44:46Son, I wouldn't have believed you could do it.
00:44:48I haven't finished yet.
00:44:50I'm getting them together, though.
00:44:51Maddock, Nolan, and Kruger.
00:44:53I just left Kruger.
00:44:55Ought to be able to pull the old round up in a day or two.
00:44:59That guy Phillips is here again.
00:45:02You ain't got nothing on me, and you know it.
00:45:05Get out.
00:45:06I have a paper, Inspector.
00:45:08I'll get you in here someday.
00:45:10And when I do, I'll be charged with murder.
00:45:12Then you'll probably need an attorney.
00:45:14I'll be at your services.
00:45:16Ready, Ruffy?
00:45:17I've been ready.
00:45:19So long, Sullivan.
00:45:20I'll be seeing you.
00:45:29Hey, you.
00:45:31Where's that mouthpiece of mine?
00:45:33Told you I wanted to talk to him.
00:45:34Where is he?
00:45:35Keep quiet.
00:45:37This isn't visitors, eh, Larp?
00:45:38Here you are.
00:45:39Yeah.
00:45:40Well, there you are.
00:45:42I got a stripe of decent grub around here.
00:45:44I can do that, too.
00:45:46What do you think you're trying to do?
00:45:47Drive me stir nuts in this hole?
00:45:48Well, you can't do it.
00:45:50This is Rocky Thorpe talking,
00:45:51not some small-time-chiseling con.
00:45:53I'm getting out of here, see?
00:45:55And when I do...
00:45:56Aye, yes.
00:46:03Carter!
00:46:07This is my lunch, Carter.
00:46:09I stumbled over the...
00:46:10over the chair there.
00:46:12Yes, lean it up.
00:46:24Just, eh, bring me a cup of coffee.
00:46:31Yes, Hopkins?
00:46:327558 wants to go to the hospital.
00:46:34Make out your usual report.
00:46:47Well?
00:46:48I'll have the doc look him over.
00:46:54I'll have the doc look him over.
00:47:25Where's Dapper, Charlie?
00:47:26With Mr. Thorpe going out with the books again.
00:47:28Would you join them?
00:47:29Count me out.
00:47:30I had enough of that already.
00:47:31All I hear is...
00:47:33What's our gross annual take on the slot machine?
00:47:35How soon can I get a list of the numbers agents?
00:47:38All I hear is figures.
00:47:44I can't eat.
00:47:46Booking you what I got.
00:47:47No, no, you don't.
00:47:49That's not for you.
00:47:50It's for Dapper.
00:47:51What's for me?
00:47:52The special delivery.
00:47:53King, drop it.
00:47:56King, drop me that letter.
00:47:57Give me that letter.
00:47:58King, come here.
00:47:59Hey, head him on.
00:48:00Come here, King.
00:48:03King, give me that letter, King.
00:48:07King, come back here.
00:48:16King, drop it.
00:48:17King, drop it.
00:48:17King, you...
00:48:29Hey, Al, run down and find that letter.
00:48:30Yeah, sure, Dapper.
00:48:31Maybe it was bad news anyway.
00:48:33You're a great help.
00:48:35It was from that guy up at the big house.
00:48:36What's he got to be writing you about now?
00:48:39Whatever it was, it looked important.
00:48:40You ought to know what he'd want, Rocky.
00:48:44Sure, what they all want.
00:48:45An extra payoff.
00:48:47Write him a check for a century.
00:48:48Okay.
00:49:18Well, where's the letter?
00:49:34I couldn't find it, Debra.
00:49:36I want all you guys to have your reports ready.
00:49:38We meet at the truck for dinner or we go to the meeting from there.
00:49:41What's that address, Debra?
00:49:43Well, anyway, it's our office on East 47th Street.
00:49:46We'll be there at 8 o'clock sharp.
00:49:47What do you need all this work done for?
00:49:49With a merger, you sap.
00:49:51The bigger business I can show Kruger, Nolan and them guys,
00:49:53the bigger cut I can grab off for us.
00:50:05Let me have Sullivan.
00:50:08Inspector Sullivan.
00:50:10Yeah.
00:50:12Yeah.
00:50:14Fine.
00:50:148 o'clock.
00:50:16East 47th Street.
00:50:19Right.
00:50:23Yes?
00:50:24Jim, we got it.
00:50:25It's tonight.
00:50:26I want every man you've got lined up here, ready to leave, at 7.30.
00:50:31Okay, Chief.
00:50:32Right.
00:50:33Hello, kid.
00:50:39Hello, doctor.
00:50:40Sit down.
00:50:41What's on your mind?
00:50:42You sounded kind of upset.
00:50:44Oh, I had to talk to you.
00:50:45I'm worried.
00:50:46About Rocky.
00:50:47Don't let it get you.
00:50:50You know how it is.
00:50:51Been away a long time.
00:50:53Got a lot of things to do.
00:50:55A lot of things on his mind.
00:50:57Besides, five years can make a lot of difference.
00:51:00Not that much difference.
00:51:02I can't believe that Rocky changed enough to treat me this way.
00:51:06He has changed, all right.
00:51:08He doesn't seem like the same man.
00:51:11That's just it.
00:51:12Are you sure he is?
00:51:14What do you mean?
00:51:15Now, look.
00:51:15Don't think I've gone crazy.
00:51:17But I believe the Rocky thought you're playing with now is a phony.
00:51:20Take it easy, kid.
00:51:23Something's wrong.
00:51:23I know it.
00:51:24I feel it.
00:51:27Oh, now, listen.
00:51:28That's wild.
00:51:30I know Rocky.
00:51:31He's changed, sure.
00:51:33There's only one Rocky.
00:51:35Couldn't I go up to meet him when he came out?
00:51:38I know him pretty well, too, Dad.
00:51:41We understood each other.
00:51:42I don't understand this guy at all.
00:51:45I can't believe he's Rocky.
00:51:47And if he isn't, I've got to know.
00:51:49You've got to know.
00:51:51Oh, there must be some way we could find out.
00:51:54Yeah.
00:51:58Has he seen that bracelet since he came back?
00:52:02No.
00:52:03Five G's he paid for it.
00:52:04I was with him when he bought it.
00:52:06He ought to remember it, wouldn't he?
00:52:08Sure.
00:52:09Rocky'd remember it.
00:52:15See you later, Rocky.
00:52:19What's the matter with you, Al?
00:52:23You look as if you had the weight of the world on your shoulders.
00:52:26Nothing.
00:52:30Come on, what's the matter?
00:52:32Look, Connie, I have got something in my mind.
00:52:35There's something screwy about this whole setup, and I don't know just what to do about it.
00:52:39Because I've got to talk to somebody.
00:52:40All right, I'm listening.
00:52:45Look at that.
00:52:47That's from the guy up at the big house.
00:52:48You know, the one who's been sending us down Rocky's messages?
00:52:52Well, if the real Rocky's still up there,
00:52:54this guy must be a copper getting the lowdown.
00:52:57Don't you see?
00:52:59Yeah, I see.
00:53:00I should have given it to Dapper when I got it, but I wasn't quite sure.
00:53:03And you haven't told Dapper?
00:53:05No, not yet.
00:53:08Look, kid.
00:53:10No matter what this fellow is, don't forget he saved your life.
00:53:13Yeah, I know, but he's a copper.
00:53:15If he's a copper and you tell, you know what'll happen.
00:53:17Well, if he is, he's got it coming to him.
00:53:19There's nothing lower than a stool pigeon, and that's what I'd be if I didn't tip off the boys.
00:53:22You make me sick.
00:53:24You've got a hero complex, but you're on the wrong side of the fence.
00:53:26Those guys are not heroes.
00:53:28They're just a bunch of yellow dogs who can't make a living on the level.
00:53:30Now, wait a minute, Connie.
00:53:31You wait a minute.
00:53:32You hate policemen, do you?
00:53:34Well, if this Rocky fellow's one, I think they're pretty swell.
00:53:37He's in there alone, and if he makes a slip, it's curtains, and he knows it.
00:53:40Would any of your so-called pals take a chance like that?
00:53:43Yes, they would not.
00:53:44They left you at Maddox and ran like rats when it got too hot.
00:53:47You talk about loyalty.
00:53:52Hello, kid.
00:53:53Hello, Rocky.
00:53:55Hiya, baby.
00:53:56Hello, Big Shot.
00:53:57Hope you don't mind my dropping in on you like this.
00:53:59No, I don't mind.
00:54:01But you'll have to excuse me while I put on the war paint.
00:54:03I'm going on a few minutes.
00:54:04What's wrong with the kid?
00:54:05Seemed in a hurry.
00:54:06Oh, I don't know.
00:54:07He's always in a hurry.
00:54:09Guess you've got big business tonight, huh?
00:54:12Did he tell you that?
00:54:13No.
00:54:13He never says anything.
00:54:15He's a pretty loyal kid.
00:54:16Loyal to Rocky Thop?
00:54:18Loyal to you.
00:54:19What do you mean by that?
00:54:24I mean, he's for you.
00:54:25Who or what a fellow is doesn't matter very much if he's for you, does it?
00:54:29How does that apply to you and me?
00:54:31Well, after all, you are Rocky Thorpe, aren't you?
00:54:34That's what they call me, sister.
00:54:37I ain't so bad.
00:54:41I could do a lot of things for you.
00:54:44Remember that.
00:54:45Yeah, I guess you could.
00:54:46A real nightclub of your own.
00:54:48A classy joint with your name up in the lights.
00:54:51That coming from Rocky Thorpe sounds as though it had strings to it.
00:54:54Everything's got strings to it, baby.
00:54:56It's all in the way you pull them.
00:54:59For a fellow who did the big thing you did for Al, you're thinking awfully small right now.
00:55:04Okay, sister.
00:55:05Skip it.
00:55:08Guess I'm not the fellow you thought I was, am I?
00:55:13Well, I'm not sure.
00:55:14But I don't think you are.
00:55:20I'll be seeing you.
00:55:27Hiya, boys.
00:55:28Hello, Rocky.
00:55:29Hiya, boss.
00:55:29Got your records ready?
00:55:31Yeah.
00:55:32Here they are, and I wish I could give you my headache with them.
00:55:35Where's Dapper?
00:55:36In here.
00:55:37He said he'd be along later.
00:55:44Thorpe.
00:55:47What do you know about this?
00:55:48I thought there was a phony in it, the way the warden's been acting.
00:55:51What's it all about?
00:55:52You don't know it, but Rocky Thorpe was released from this prison weeks ago.
00:55:56Rocky Thorpe?
00:55:57He looks enough like you to be your twin brother.
00:56:00Even your own men fell for it.
00:56:01Huh?
00:56:02Yeah, they've met him outside.
00:56:04And he's moved in.
00:56:05I've got to get out of here.
00:56:06I can't spring your arms.
00:56:07What do you mean you can't?
00:56:07You've got your keys.
00:56:08That's asking too much.
00:56:09Ask back again.
00:56:10Anything you want.
00:56:11No, Rocky.
00:56:13Hey, somebody's coming.
00:56:14You hear that?
00:56:15I don't hear anybody.
00:56:37I don't hear anybody.
00:57:07Come on, get out.
00:57:36I'm both of you.
00:57:43Listen, if this is a stick-up, well, I haven't got...
00:57:45Shut up.
00:57:47Yeah, you'll do.
00:57:48Give me your coat.
00:57:56Now, I'll take you off your pants.
00:57:57Oh, dear.
00:57:59Listen, I don't care if you take my water, but after all, I...
00:58:02Shut up.
00:58:03Stay where you are, sister.
00:58:17Sorry I'm late, Rocky.
00:58:18We better be getting started.
00:58:20All right.
00:58:22You can take care of that.
00:58:24Yeah, I guess I better.
00:58:25Wouldn't be so good if this stuff got into the wrong hands, would it?
00:58:28I'll ride with Rocky in the first car.
00:58:34You and Tombstone go in this one with the rest of the boys and stick close behind us, see?
00:58:38Okay.
00:58:38It's Nolan's place, Al.
00:58:44You know the garage on 83rd Street.
00:58:46What do you mean, 83rd Street?
00:58:48Gee, Rocky, I forgot to tell you.
00:58:50Nolan and the other guys were leery of our place, just like we didn't want to meet in theirs.
00:58:54I knew it wouldn't make any difference to you.
00:58:57Yeah.
00:58:58Them guys wouldn't trust their own mothers.
00:58:59Aren't you walking?
00:59:13Yeah, Rocky, where's Dapper?
00:59:31Why, isn't he with you?
00:59:33With me?
00:59:33Listen, this is Rocky himself.
00:59:35The real goods.
00:59:36Yeah, I've been in Sturr all the time.
00:59:38I just smashed out tonight.
00:59:39Then my hunch was right.
00:59:42Ah, see, I had a hunch, eh?
00:59:44Ah, save it, save it.
00:59:45Where's that copper they rung in on you?
00:59:48Call Dapper there and tell him I want that phony tied up in a bag.
00:59:52Yeah, I'm going right over there.
00:59:55Oh, I almost forgot.
00:59:57Here's what I bought for you to give to Orkin.
01:00:01I hope it's all right.
01:00:02What is it?
01:00:03It's a bracelet.
01:00:04It's about the only thing in the jewelry line you never gave her, isn't it?
01:00:08Yeah, I guess it is.
01:00:10Hey, that's okay, Dapper.
01:00:13Couldn't have picked out a better one myself.
01:00:16Yeah, I thought you'd say that.
01:00:18What is this?
01:00:20You'll see in a minute, copper.
01:00:21Are you nuts?
01:00:22Are you Rocky Thorpe?
01:00:24Why are you?
01:00:24Oh, seems like Rocky'd remember a bracelet he shelled out five grand for.
01:00:29You didn't recognize it.
01:00:31Put that rot away and stop playing detective.
01:00:33What do you expect me to do?
01:00:34Remember things I gave people five years ago?
01:00:36I've given bracelets to a lot of dames in my day.
01:00:39And I don't need any memory training tests from you.
01:00:42So put that thing away before I slap your ears back.
01:00:45You ain't slapping nobody.
01:00:46I told you something.
01:00:56I guess this makes us even.
01:00:57Thanks, kid.
01:01:04Keep going, kid.
01:01:06And this is what I want you to do.
01:01:07Where's Al going with the car, boy?
01:01:23Driving Dapper down to get some cigarettes.
01:01:26He'll be along.
01:01:26Hello, Matic.
01:01:38How are you, fellas?
01:01:39Hiya, Rocky.
01:01:39Hello, Rocky.
01:01:43What's the idea?
01:01:45We get a message you want to change the place and then you keep us waiting.
01:01:48Sorry, pal.
01:01:49I got hung up.
01:01:50Well, now we finally got together.
01:01:51What do you think of the plan?
01:01:52Well, we're here, ain't we?
01:01:54Let's do business.
01:01:54All right, put your cards on the table.
01:01:58There's mine.
01:02:00There's mine.
01:02:02And mine.
01:02:03Orchid's on the phone.
01:02:05She wants to talk to Dapper.
01:02:06He ain't here.
01:02:07I'll take it.
01:02:11Hello, Dapper.
01:02:13Oh, Tombstone.
01:02:15Listen, I just heard from Rocky.
01:02:17Yeah, Rocky.
01:02:19Okay, we split the total take according to the percentage each outfit shows here.
01:02:23You guys padded plenty.
01:02:27Okay, so did I.
01:02:28The total's fair.
01:02:29I'll check up on the details later.
01:02:32Hold on, Rocky.
01:02:34I wouldn't even trust you with that dope.
01:02:36It's dynamite.
01:02:37Yeah, better we burn those papers before we leave here.
01:02:40I'm the guy that's running this new setup, see?
01:02:42I gotta have it at my fingers' ends if I'm gonna do it right.
01:02:45You get me?
01:02:51Let's go over the truck and celebrate the new deal.
01:02:53Hey, Maddox?
01:02:54What do you say, fellas?
01:02:54What's your hurry?
01:03:00Copper.
01:03:00Huh?
01:03:01Copper?
01:03:02Yeah.
01:03:02They had Rocky and Stella and painted the stick on us.
01:03:05This mug's crazy.
