00:00I want to be unpredictable, but then I'm predictably unpredictable.
00:04That's the problem.
00:06Oh, here's Richie's here, the black clouds above his head,
00:09and he's going to be annoyed.
00:11And it's like, no, I'm not.
00:13I'm very content inside.
00:15I just give the impression that I'm annoyed.
00:18Because it keeps people off my back.
00:21If I come in on a scowl, people go,
00:24oh, we won't talk to him now.
00:27It's a protection thing. It's a cover.
00:30It's like, don't talk to me because I'm a monastic guy.
00:33Leave me alone.
00:34I've seen pictures of me at five, and I remember distinctly my mother saying,
00:37smile for the cameraman.
00:39And I'm going, no.
00:41How many people can fake a smile?
00:43I can't.
00:45And I kind of wonder about the people that do.
00:50He often says that he's never really happy,
00:53but to get content is more what he's in search of.
00:56Happiness is fun.
00:57He thinks it's fleeting.
00:59So he doesn't do the, he doesn't do happy.
01:02As the rest of us know it.
01:04I think happiness is superficial.
01:08I'm a bit of an enigma.
01:10I tend to be, I thrive on friction with rock and roll.
01:15And sometimes even this music.
01:18I thrive on rebellion and hating people.
01:21And I can love people, but I thrive on the rejection.
01:27You know, if I see somebody in the audience going,
01:31I'll show you.
01:34And then I'm all over playing really hard.
01:37Whereas if everybody's really happy, I'm like, oh, I'm happy.
01:41And I won't go anywhere.
01:43So I thrive on friction.
01:45And that's been indoctrinated in me for a long time.
01:51I don't even know where that comes from.
01:53Maybe I'm not going to blame my parents.
01:55It wasn't them.
01:56I loved horror films.
01:58I loved Christopher Lee.
01:59I loved all the Hammer horror films.
02:02I thought, wouldn't that be great to have a band
02:05that had that effect on people?
02:08People went, oh, oh, what's this?
02:11This is the dark person.
02:12Instead of being Paul McCartney going,
02:15everything's fine, everybody.
02:18Yeah, he's a great musician.
02:20But you know, that thumbs up is like, that's boring.
02:23I don't think smiling comes naturally.
02:24Even in personal pictures.
02:26He doesn't, he just doesn't come naturally.
02:27But smiling doesn't come naturally to people.
02:29It's not a normal thing.
02:30It doesn't come to you.
