00:00If you are a newer artist, you gotta be on the internet.
00:04Like, you gotta be on the internet.
00:05Like, I don't know who this older person is, but I'm like,
00:08well, you don't have to be on the internet.
00:09You're 74.
00:10Yeah, yeah.
00:11You don't have to be on the internet.
00:12You're the OG.
00:12You established yourself before all this.
00:13Yeah, like, you did before it came up.
00:15Like, congratulations.
00:16Okay, we don't have that same...
00:18For real.
00:18Luxury.
00:19Yeah.
00:23All right, this is your Odyssey check-in at the Hard Rock Hotel, New York.
00:27We are here with Renee Rapp, and I was going down a rabbit hole
00:32and checking out all your stuff, and I realized we are both Capricorns.
00:36Oh, when's your birthday?
00:37The 9th.
00:38We're a day apart, right?
00:39Stop.
00:39We're so close.
00:41So what makes us elite?
00:42The fact that we can get shit done.
00:46Everybody usually listens to us, and we kind of tend to, like, lead the crowd.
00:50Do you get the you have no filter thing?
00:54Do people say that about you?
00:55It's my entire career is me apparently having no filter, which I was always very confused
01:02by, because I was like, I don't really perceive myself that way, but it was so interesting
01:05to, like, start seeing everybody else perceive me that way, and then I was like, okay, I guess
01:10so.
01:11You're like, I'm just being truthful.
01:13Well, I was just like, I don't know what else I'm supposed to do.
01:15Right.
01:15I was like, I don't really know how else to do this.
01:18Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:18Like, what, I'm not sure.
01:20Like, I don't, there's no other way.
01:22Right.
01:23You know what I mean?
01:23Do you follow the, are you into the whole horoscope thing?
01:26I definitely am.
01:28I definitely am.
01:28I think it's interesting.
01:29Yeah.
01:29Because some of the Capricorn stuff, like, I read it, and I'm like, wow, that actually
01:31is really spot on.
01:33It is.
01:33There, I, I'm a big, I'm a big, big spiritual girl in that regard.
01:39So, yeah, like, definitely.
01:41I think, I think those things are real.
01:43Also, like, how much of the earth is, like, water, which, like, controls, like, the moon?
01:49Like, you know what I mean?
01:50And, like, we're what, like, 97% water, something crazy like that, you know?
01:54So, like, obviously.
01:56Right.
01:56You are like, we are connected.
01:57Yeah, like, it makes sense.
01:59Do you feel like with this fame, I don't want to call it newfound fame, but with this fame
02:04now, you've become more secure in your own skin or more insecure?
02:09Both.
02:10Both at the same time.
02:11Yeah.
02:11I think in so many more, in so many ways, I'm much more secure.
02:15And also, in so many ways, I'm more insecure because, you know, and this is not to be,
02:20like, a pick me or anything, but, like, you know, people point out things about me, things
02:24about new things for me to be insecure about every single day.
02:28For real.
02:28So, you know, it is what it is, I guess.
02:31Like, I chose it.
02:32But, yeah, I think simultaneously both, I think.
02:36Is there a specific way you feel more secure?
02:40Like, one way you could share?
02:42It's interesting.
02:43I guess I feel more secure in the same ways that I do feel insecure.
02:46Like, I care.
02:51I simultaneously care less about how I'm perceived at the same time as I, like, still do really
02:57care.
02:58I just, like, keep, basically, I care, but it's not affecting the way that I act or the
03:05way that I move.
03:06Right, right, right.
03:06You know?
03:07Like, it's not, I don't know.
03:10Like, I'm not taking.
03:10You're aware of it, but it's not that deep.
03:12Yeah.
03:12Like, it's certainly, like, there will be days that it, like, makes me feel like shit about
03:16myself, but also I'm like, okay, so what am I going to do?
03:18Like, try and act different for some, like, random bitch in Illinois?
03:22I don't think so.
03:23Like, that's not happening.
03:24You don't pay me.
03:25Right, right, right.
03:26That was very specific.
03:28Who is this woman that we're talking about?
03:30I have no idea.
03:31And also, everybody from Illinois is actually kind of cool, so I don't know why I picked
03:34that.
03:35Yeah, yeah.
03:35But, you know.
03:36Tell me your ideal recording session.
03:40Like, what time of day would it be?
03:42What's the beverage with you?
03:44What are you wearing?
03:45Do you like having friends in there, or is it just you and the engineer?
03:48Okay, break it down.
03:49No.
03:50Ideal recording day for me is as follows.
03:52I am very, very, very careful and protective of my mornings and my nights.
03:58Okay.
03:59I need to start the day by myself, and I need to end the day by myself.
04:02Okay.
04:02I used to just, like, let everybody work me under the ground all the time.
04:07And that's okay, because I think, like, you know, we, like, live in the U.S.
04:10That's kind of, like, our whole shtick and thing.
04:13Yeah.
04:14And music industry, like, has, like, no rules.
04:17Right.
04:18And, like, we certainly don't have, like, unions.
04:20Yeah.
04:21So, you know, like, it's kind of a free-for-all, like, for everybody.
04:24So, I now am really protective of my mornings.
04:28Yeah.
04:28So, ideally, I would go to a session at, like, 12.30 or 12.
04:33Okay.
04:33And then, ideally, I would finish at, like, 7 or 6.30.
04:40Probably 7 if I'm going to pull up at 12.30, which means I'll be there at 1.
04:43And then, during the day, I just want it to be, like, me and the people I'm writing with.
04:48Okay.
04:49I would like to have water and coconut water and any other, like, fun drinks of that nature.
05:01Yeah.
05:01And I'm not – I don't love having snacks in the studio because I get really distracted by them.
05:07But I would like one meal.
05:09Yeah, yeah.
05:09I'd like one meal.
05:11And maybe it's a Jones on 3rd chicken salad.
05:13It's very good.
05:14Okay.
05:14That was kind of what we ate, like, every day making this album.
05:17You're like, this is the recipe for an amazing song.
05:19Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:20Hell yeah.
05:21Yeah.
05:21But, yeah.
05:22I like to have my mornings and nights.
05:24That's most important to me.
05:25So, you're not rolling up in there with a finished product, usually.
05:29You're still tweaking and, you know, completing things.
05:35Okay.
05:35Oh, all the time.
05:36All the time.
05:36Do you ever go in there with, like, a fully completed song and you're just banging it?
05:40No.
05:40No.
05:41I used to, but no.
05:42Not anymore.
05:43You just feel like the process is –
05:45Yeah.
05:46I just, like – I like collaborating, like, from, like, top to bottom.
05:50I love collaborating.
05:51I used to write, like, pretty much all my stuff by myself out of necessity because I didn't have anybody around me.
06:00So, I would write all my own songs.
06:02And I don't know.
06:03I like – I love collaborating.
06:05I love collaborating.
06:07So, with touring, you know, leading up to tour and while you're on tour, like, do you have certain ways that you protect your mental health, your mental space?
06:20I've only toured once and I didn't at that point.
06:24I don't feel like I had, like, any kind of, like, protection.
06:27Yeah.
06:28And this go-round, I'm, like, definitely going to try and put things in place so that I don't, like, get miserable and, like, hate my life.
06:35Was it just, like, lack of a routine or what –
06:38It was just, like, lack of routine.
06:39Also, like, my, like, routing for my, like, last tour was just, like, really intense.
06:44But I also think, like, I was kind of, like – I was on a grind.
06:47Like, I kind of had to.
06:49Tour is a really easy – for me.
06:52Tour is a really easy thing to fall into and feel depressed.
06:55Yeah.
06:56It's, like, really – because you're – I like traveling but not that much.
07:03Right.
07:03Like, I don't like traveling that much.
07:05Like, I like being in one place.
07:07I like, like – like, I'm from a very small town in North Carolina.
07:10Like, I don't – I'm not, like, a big city girl that, like, loves to, like, play and do all this shit.
07:16Like, sometimes for sure.
07:17But, like, I like to be at my house.
07:20Yeah.
07:20Bro, I like to be at my house.
07:22Like, I want my things and my routine.
07:25And I want, like, downtime to be completely alone.
07:28And it's hard sometimes, like, because, like, I don't know, tour buses are, like, depressing.
07:32Yeah.
07:32You know?
07:33So, I don't know.
07:34I'm going to try and give it a go and make this one a little bit better for me.
07:39But I had a lot of – I had a lot of friends with me on tour the last time I did.
07:43And I was on tour with my now girlfriend.
07:45And we were just friends at the time.
07:47And we were, like, getting closer.
07:49So, that was, like, exciting for me.
07:50And, like, my other best friend was on tour with us.
07:52So, that was good.
07:54Will it be the same crew coming with you this time?
07:57Mm-mm.
07:58No.
07:58So, you won't have that, like, emotional support then, right?
08:02Mm-mm.
08:03It's interesting.
08:04Yeah.
08:05Okay.
08:05I know.
08:06We got to get you a dog or something.
08:07I know.
08:08Yeah.
08:08I know.
08:09I might – yeah.
08:09I'm going to try and – I don't know.
08:13Yeah.
08:13I don't know.
08:14Yeah.
08:14You got to figure out some systems in place for sure.
08:17I have to figure it out because I want to – like, I work, like, way too hard to not enjoy the things that I end up doing, you know?
08:26There was some older actor.
08:28I forget who it was.
08:29But his advice to a younger actor was, like, you know, if you overexpose yourself on social media, there can be less of a desire from your fans to want to – there's no urgency to come out and see your latest movie or TV show because they feel like they have access to you all the time.
08:47They see you all the time.
08:49Do you agree with that statement?
08:51Can you overexpose yourself, you feel like, on social media?
08:54I think you can overexpose yourself in anything.
08:56I also think there are actors who have done, like, a slew of, like, way too many movies that they shouldn't have done and now they're overexposed and they won't have any, like, want from the industry either.
09:06And what about in the music space too?
09:08Yeah.
09:08I think you definitely can.
09:10But I also think – I think it's a fine line and I also think it's very different generationally because, like, if you are a newer artist, you got to be on the internet.
09:21Like, you got to be on the internet.
09:22Like, I don't know who this older person is, but I'm like, well, you don't have to be on the internet.
09:26You're 74.
09:27Yeah, yeah.
09:28You don't have to be on the internet.
09:29You're the OG.
09:29You established yourself before all this.
09:30Yeah, like, you did before I came up.
09:32Like, congratulations.
09:33Okay, we don't have that same –
09:35For real.
09:35Luxury.
09:35Yeah.
09:36And, like, if we do, we have to be really, really careful and, like, mysterious about how we, like, move with it.
09:42So, absolutely, you can overexpose yourself.
09:44But I also think, like, I would more so take advice from someone who's, like, my age and does a good job of maintaining mystery.
09:54Yeah, yeah, yeah.
09:54You know?
09:55Yeah.
09:56I don't know.
09:56It's just different.
09:57Yeah, exactly.
09:58It's just –
09:59It's different.
09:59Yeah, yeah.
10:00It's different.
10:00It's different.
10:01Before we wrap, when you were younger –
10:04Yeah.
10:04Did you ever go to a concert and make a concert poster for an artist?
10:11Like, something to hold up?
10:12Yeah.
10:13No.
10:14Never.
10:14No.
10:15Why?
10:15Were you anti?
10:16If you could do it today, like, who would it be for and what would you write on there?
10:19I don't want to carry things.
10:21I don't want to carry things.
10:22I also just, like, I don't –
10:24By the way, this is not to say that, like, all, like, posters are distracting and nobody should bring them.
10:29Not at all.
10:30Okay.
10:30But, like, I love signs at shows.
10:32I think they're really funny and I think they're great.
10:34But I'm much – I'm too anxious of a person.
10:39Yeah, yeah.
10:39And I personally, personally, don't mix my words.
10:43Lord have mercy.
10:44I know how y'all like to do that.
10:45But I personally would not bring a poster to a show because I just want to, like, watch the show.
10:53Yeah, yeah.
10:54But, again, that's not to say, like, I don't like it.
10:56Right, right.
10:57And that's not something you should do.
10:58I just don't like to attend a concert in that way.
11:01But I also like to attend a concert, like, more incognito even before I was, like, a public person.
11:09Yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:10Do you know what I mean?
11:10So it's never really been my thing.
11:12Yeah.
11:12I also don't like holding things.
11:14Yeah, yeah.
11:15I don't want to even bring my purse.
11:17That's hilarious.
11:18Yeah.
11:18Man, that is so great.
11:19Yeah.
11:19Listen, I really appreciate you taking out the time.
11:23Congratulations on everything.
11:24You are killing it.
11:25Thanks, Annie.
11:25You are awesome.
11:26Thanks.
11:27Yeah, that's a wrap.
11:27Thanks, babe.
