00:00Good evening, friends.
00:11This is your host to welcome you through the creaking door into the inner sanctum.
00:18You'll have to be very quiet tonight because one of our guests is asleep in the deep.
00:24Ha, ha, ha. Poor chap. He was a sailor by trade, an old salt named Peter.
00:31He had a corpse in every port, but I'm afraid he went overboard.
00:36You see, people made him sad, and he had a nasty habit of drowning his sorrows.
00:43Ha, ha, ha. His last voyage was over a large body of water, the Dead Sea,
00:50and he was blown into it by a stiff wind.
00:56But it was too crowded down there, five phantoms deep.
01:02Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
01:09Tonight's inner sanctum mystery, Cause of Death, was written by Bob Sloan and Ed Adamson
01:14and stars Barry Kroger in the role of Ken with Sanis Ortega as Al.
01:18Well, gather round, my friends, and you shall hear
01:26A Midnight Tale of Death and Fear.
01:31It's full of ghosts and rich in gore,
01:34and if you listen, you'll sleep no more.
01:38Ha, ha, ha.
01:40Now sit back in your uneasy chairs
01:42as Ken Griswold tells us his weird story.
01:46Death held no terror for a man like me.
01:52I'd seen the dead too often,
01:55lived among them, worked among them,
01:57and to touch the still, cold flesh of a corpse
02:01was a routine experience.
02:04For ten years, I'd been the coroner of Redmond County.
02:07I'd seen death in all its cruel, twisted forms,
02:09and yet there had never been one like this.
02:15It all began up at the lake.
02:17Even a coroner has nerves,
02:20and mine had begun to get the best of me.
02:22So Inspector Al Hendricks gave me a week off,
02:24and I went up to Grandview Lodge alone.
02:27On the third day of my vacation,
02:29I was sitting on the lakefront dock
02:31when I heard my name called.
02:32Ben!
02:33I turned and saw Al Hendricks coming quickly down the hill.
02:36Ben!
02:37I'm afraid you'll have to interrupt your vacation.
02:39What?
02:39You've got to come back to town.
02:41Come back to town? When?
02:42By the way, I'm driving you in.
02:43Oh, now, wait, Al.
02:44I haven't had a vacation in almost three years.
02:46I know, I know.
02:47I wouldn't ask you to come if it wasn't important.
02:49This is a very special case.
02:51Why? What's so special about this case?
02:53Um, a woman was found dead in her house
02:56at 11 this morning.
02:57There doesn't seem to be any visible reason for her death.
03:00Well, there's got to be a reason.
03:02So far, we can't find one.
03:03There's always a reason.
03:05You'll find one.
03:05You'll have to find it for us, Ken.
03:08Me?
03:08Why must it be me?
03:10When you get there, you'll understand why.
03:12What do you mean, why?
03:14Because it's...
03:16Helen.
03:17What?
03:19Yes, Ken.
03:20The woman who died is your wife.
03:29There she is, Ken.
03:31Al Hendricks pulled back the sheet.
03:35And for the first time, I saw my wife, Ellen, in death.
03:39Her face was twisted into a strange smile.
03:43And her eyes seemed to stare at me through half-open lids.
03:48But somehow, the aura of the dead wasn't about her.
03:52It was as if...
03:54It was as if she were only asleep.
03:58Dr. Vincent and I stayed there for three hours.
04:01Testing, analyzing, checking back over every bit of evidence
04:04which might give us an inkling of the cause of death.
04:07And when we were finished,
04:10I asked Dr. Vincent to send Al in.
04:13Well, Ken, what's the verdict?
04:17Al, there is no verdict.
04:20What?
04:20It doesn't seem possible, Al.
04:22I can't believe it.
04:23Yes, it's true.
04:25What are you talking about?
04:26Ellen's death.
04:27There's absolutely no cause, Al.
04:29There's no reason for her to be dead.
04:31Now, wait a minute, Ken.
04:33You said yourself on the way down from the lake,
04:35if somebody dies, there's got to be a reason for it.
04:37Some cause that makes them stop living.
04:39Yes, that's what I said.
04:40But this is different.
04:42Death is death.
04:43How can this be different from any other?
04:45I don't know, but it is.
04:47You mean she just stopped living.
04:49Only you can't explain it.
04:50No, that's not what I mean.
04:53I have a feeling that Ellen didn't stop living.
04:57That she didn't stop living at all.
05:02On the official certificate,
05:08the cause of death was listed as unknown.
05:12Two days later, Ellen was buried.
05:15That night, I sat in the half-dark living room.
05:19Outside, a howling wind slashed at the French windows
05:22that led to the lawn.
05:24I couldn't sleep.
05:26I couldn't get the thought out of my mind.
05:29The thought that I should never have allowed them
05:31to bury Ellen.
05:32I just sat there,
05:34the idea searing deeper and deeper into my mind.
05:38And suddenly,
05:39one of the French windows was sprung open
05:42and the cold wind whipped into the dim-lit room.
05:45I've come back, Ken.
05:47At first, I thought it was just the echoing wind
05:49playing tricks.
05:50Then I heard it again, stronger.
05:52I'm here, Ken.
05:54It was her voice.
05:56Ellen's.
05:58You're not afraid, are you, Ken?
06:01She stepped out of the shadows
06:02and stood there before me
06:04in the yellow light of the lamp.
06:06She was dressed just the way she was
06:08when they put her in the coffin.
06:11The gold bracelet I had given her
06:13glistened on her wrist.
06:15Why do you look at me that way?
06:18It's not you, Ellen.
06:21Oh, yes.
06:22It...
06:23It can't be.
06:25You're dead.
06:26Am I?
06:27Really?
06:28Really?
06:29You were buried this morning.
06:31You died two days ago.
06:33Don't you remember, Ken?
06:36You told Inspector Hendricks.
06:38I heard you.
06:41Ellen didn't stop living.
06:44Oh, this is just a dream.
06:46You know why I didn't stop living, Ken.
06:48Ellen, it's because
06:51you can't make a wish like that
06:55come true.
06:57What wish?
06:58Don't you remember?
07:01You said to me,
07:03Ellen,
07:05I wish you were dead.
07:08No!
07:08No, Ellen, I always loved you.
07:10You didn't.
07:10You never did.
07:12When Carl was nice to me,
07:14you hated us both for it.
07:16You thought I was going to Carl
07:18and so you made your wish.
07:20You wished...
07:20No, I...
07:21...that I would die.
07:22I didn't mean it, Ellen.
07:23I swear.
07:24It was just something I said in anger.
07:25You wished me dead, Ken,
07:26but you can't kill by willing it.
07:30You can see now
07:31that I've lived on.
07:34Oh, that isn't real.
07:36You're only in my mind.
07:37It's just my nerves.
07:37No, Ken.
07:38Yes, it is, it is.
07:39It's nothing but a trick
07:40of my imagination.
07:41I'm as real as you are.
07:42I'm flesh and blood and bone
07:44the same as you here.
07:46No!
07:47Here.
07:48Touch my...
07:49I...
07:51I...
07:52I moved back.
07:54But she kept coming
07:55closer and closer.
07:57And then I turned
07:58and ran across the room.
07:59I saw a follow-up to me.
08:00I got to the bedroom door
08:01and I...
08:01I turned the key in the lock.
08:04I stood there in the dark.
08:06My heart hammering
08:08a tattoo of fear
08:08that shook my whole body.
08:10I tightened my fingers
08:12around my throat
08:13to hold back the scream
08:14that cried silently
08:15for release.
08:17And then it came.
08:19She was knocking at the door.
08:21I couldn't hold it back
08:22any longer.
08:27Ben!
08:28Ben, open the door.
08:29Let me in.
08:30Ben, do you hear me?
08:31Unlock this door.
08:34Al, thank heavens
08:36you got here.
08:37I got the call
08:37from your neighbors
08:38down the road.
08:39I heard you scream.
08:40What the deuce
08:41has been going on here?
08:42She came back, Al.
08:43Huh?
08:44Ellen, I told you
08:45she wasn't dead.
08:45Oh, now, look.
08:46No, I'm not crazy.
08:47You've got to believe me.
08:47She was here.
08:48She tried to get
08:48into this room
08:49and that's why
08:50I locked myself in.
08:50Now, you listen to me.
08:51The last couple of days
08:52have been rough on me.
08:52No, no, wait a minute.
08:53I know what I'm talking about.
08:55Ellen's come back.
08:55I said you listen.
08:56Your wife was buried
08:57this morning.
08:58I was at the funeral with you.
09:00She was buried
09:00and it's all over.
09:02Had a nightmare.
09:03But Al...
09:03Just a nightmare.
09:04Things like that
09:05happen to all of us.
09:06She wasn't here.
09:07She couldn't have been.
09:10It wasn't a dream, Al.
09:12She was here.
09:14What are you talking about?
09:16On the floor, there.
09:18That bracelet.
09:18That bracelet was on Ellen
09:22when she was buried
09:23this morning.
09:29After Al left,
09:31I went out to the cemetery.
09:33The moon dropped
09:34a pearl gray blanket
09:35over her grave.
09:37I dug feverishly
09:38into the freezer.
09:39I still had to prove to Al
09:42that Ellen lived on.
09:45The bracelet.
09:47It wasn't enough for him.
09:48I dug deeper.
09:52And deeper.
09:54I just about removed
09:55all the dirt
09:56that covered the casket top
09:57when a shadow
09:59of a human form
10:00fell across the grave.
10:01Hello, Ken.
10:02Al.
10:03I went back to your house.
10:04You were gone.
10:05I figured this is
10:06where I'd find you.
10:07You're wasting your time, Ken.
10:09She's in there and dead.
10:11Before Al could stop me,
10:12I bent down
10:13and snapped open
10:13the coffin hinge.
10:14I pulled up the lid
10:15just as he jumped
10:16down beside me.
10:17Close that coffin!
10:18I told you not.
10:20Ken!
10:22We stood there
10:23in the grave,
10:25our eyes fixed,
10:26staring into
10:27the empty coffin.
10:36Al,
10:37you've got to listen to me.
10:38Oh, Ken,
10:38do what I told you,
10:39will you?
10:40Go into your room
10:40and get some sleep.
10:42We'll talk about it
10:43in the morning.
10:43No, Al,
10:44you've got to listen to me now.
10:45I can explain everything.
10:46I know what happened to Ellen.
10:47I know why she wasn't in a coffin.
10:48Someone's playing a trick on us.
10:49The dead don't rise
10:50from that grave.
10:50But she wasn't dead.
10:52Not really dead.
10:53She was here tonight
10:54in this room.
10:54That was a dream.
10:55No, no.
10:56She was real.
10:57She spoke to me.
10:58She was alive.
10:59And she'll be back again tonight.
11:00I know it.
11:01I can feel her coming closer.
11:02Al,
11:03she's coming back.
11:04Stop it, Ken.
11:05Stop talking like that.
11:06I can't face her again.
11:06I'm afraid.
11:07Don't,
11:07don't,
11:08don't make me stay here.
11:09Al,
11:09please.
11:09You've got to help me.
11:11All right.
11:12All right.
11:13You can come over to my place.
11:15Al,
11:15wait,
11:15don't leave me.
11:16Now,
11:16take it easy.
11:17Just wanted to get some of your things
11:18out of this closet.
11:20Al!
11:22Look!
11:24In that closet.
11:27Helen was in that closet.
11:29For a moment,
11:30she just stood there,
11:32rigid and white.
11:33Her eyes burning into me.
11:36Her lips twisted into the same strange smile.
11:40She seemed to want to come toward me.
11:44But she fell forward to the floor.
11:48She lay there,
11:49silent and motionless.
11:52This time I knew she was really dead.
11:56The knife in her back told me
11:58that Ellen would never return to me again.
12:03You know,
12:12I feel kind of sorry for our coroner friend,
12:15Ken Griswold.
12:16He never should have picked out that sort of job for himself.
12:19Working in a morgue is enough to make anybody slab happy.
12:24That place can really get you down.
12:26About six feet down.
12:29It's like they say,
12:30death is always just around the coroner.
12:36Oh, yes.
12:36About Ken's wife, Ellen.
12:39Let that be a lesson to you
12:40the next time you make a wish
12:41over a vulture bomb.
12:44That's the way some women are.
12:46Stubborn.
12:47You can't get rid of them.
12:49Dead or alive.
12:49Well,
12:54now let's get back to Ken Griswold
12:56as he continues his tale of terror.
13:00After we found Ellen's body in that closet,
13:02I knew I had to get away from that house forever.
13:04I wanted to run out into the night,
13:06but I couldn't move.
13:08Some force held me stationary in its grip.
13:11The room began to swim crazily.
13:13I saw Al Hendricks come towards me.
13:16There was a black curtain fell between us.
13:18And I was lost in its deep fall.
13:26Feeling better, Al?
13:28Where am I?
13:29What is this place?
13:31Out a hospital.
13:33You've been here two days.
13:34Two days?
13:36Yeah.
13:37You blanked out.
13:39Ellen...
13:40She was murdered.
13:42Now, you've got to take it easy, Ken.
13:43We won't talk about that now.
13:45I have to talk about it.
13:46Don't you see, Al?
13:46I was right.
13:48Ellen had lived on.
13:49No, she was already dead.
13:51With that knife in her back.
13:52You only die once.
13:54What I said before still goes.
13:55Somebody's playing tricks.
13:59Al wouldn't listen to me.
14:01He told me to try and get some sleep.
14:03Then he pulled down the shades
14:04and walked out of the room.
14:07A little later,
14:08the door of my room opened.
14:11In the semi-dark,
14:12I could see that it was a woman
14:14dressed in white.
14:16She stood at the foot of my bed.
14:18Good evening.
14:20Who are you?
14:22Well, I'm your nurse, sir.
14:23Here, drink this.
14:25Ellen.
14:26My name isn't Ellen.
14:28I'm just the nurse.
14:29You're Ellen.
14:30You've come back again.
14:31Now, now, you mustn't excite yourself.
14:33Just, just, please, drink this.
14:34No, no, no.
14:35You'll sleep.
14:35No, don't.
14:36You'll feel much better after.
14:37You've come to take me with you.
14:38I know what's in that glass.
14:39You can trust me.
14:40It won't hurt you.
14:41I won't die.
14:41Take it away.
14:42Take it away.
14:43Oh, now, now.
14:44I knocked the glass out of her hand.
14:46It crashed to the floor.
14:47She stood there looking down at me,
14:49that same twisted smile on her face.
14:51I slid out of the bed.
14:53Now, you mustn't get up, sir.
14:54You're not wet.
14:55She came towards me, her hand outstretched,
14:57just like the other time.
14:59She came closer and closer.
15:00Let me help you back.
15:01No.
15:01I won't hurt you.
15:02I got to the door and opened it.
15:04I started to run down the corridor
15:05when something got my arm.
15:06I'll be tight to the spot now.
15:08Let go.
15:08Please, my heaven's sake, let go of me.
15:10Let go of me.
15:10Take it easy, Ken.
15:11Please, get out.
15:12Take it easy.
15:13Al.
15:14What's the matter with you?
15:15You're supposed to stay in bed.
15:16Let me go.
15:17I got to get out of here.
15:18You're going back to your room.
15:19No, Al, I can't go back there.
15:20Don't make me.
15:20She's there.
15:21What?
15:21Ellen, she's coming back again.
15:22Now, look.
15:23You've got to believe me.
15:24She's in there waiting for her.
15:25No, Ken, it's just your nerves.
15:27I was outside the door.
15:28Oh, her voice and her face weren't the same,
15:30but I knew who she was.
15:31I could tell by that smile of hers.
15:32She's posing as my nurse.
15:34That's how she got in.
15:34But that can't be, Ken.
15:37You don't have a nurse.
15:44You don't have to worry about her coming back anymore, Ken.
15:46Oh, she will.
15:47It was all in your mind.
15:49I think I can make you see that now.
15:51What do you mean?
15:51You felt responsible for Ellen's death
15:53because of that fight you had with her.
15:55That's why your imagination ran wild.
15:57Oh, but Al, that bracelet, her body in the closet.
15:59Like I told you, she was dead all the time.
16:01Somebody was playing tricks.
16:03The man who murdered your wife,
16:04we've got a lead on him.
16:06What are you talking about?
16:06What man?
16:07One of your neighbors gave us the tip.
16:09Two o'clock in the morning on that day,
16:10your wife was found dead.
16:11A man was seen leaving your house.
16:13He was tall and wore a black hat and coat.
16:16The murderer must have known
16:17that you were at Grandview Lake.
16:18But it couldn't have been murder.
16:19The autopsy would have shown that.
16:20We couldn't find any cause for Ellen's death.
16:22There's always a cause.
16:25We'll find Ellen's murderer somehow.
16:31When Al left,
16:32I thought back over everything he had told me.
16:34Someone was playing tricks.
16:38A tall man in a black hat and coat.
16:41I kept searching my mind,
16:43probing.
16:45And then the idea struck.
16:46Something Ellen had said.
16:47When Carl was nice to me,
16:52you hated us both for it.
16:55You thought I was going to Carl.
16:58So you made your wish.
17:01Carl.
17:02Carl Denson.
17:04They wouldn't allow me to leave,
17:06but I found a way of getting out of that hospital.
17:08And I went to see Dr. Carl Denson.
17:10Yes, what is it?
17:20Hello, Denson.
17:22Why, Ken Griswold.
17:24I want to talk to you.
17:26Yes, of course.
17:27Tell me, tell me.
17:30I heard you were in the hospital.
17:31I got out of there tonight.
17:33The way you say that...
17:37Call it escape, if you want to.
17:39Look, Griswold, you're not well.
17:41That's what you want them to believe,
17:42that I'm crazy.
17:43I don't know what you're talking about.
17:44I'm talking about Ellen.
17:45You killed her, Denson.
17:47What?
17:47You murdered my wife.
17:48You couldn't have her for yourself,
17:49so you killed her.
17:50You're mad.
17:50I read the report.
17:51Ellen died of causes unknown.
17:53You killed her.
17:54And now I know how you did it.
17:56You're a doctor.
17:57You'd know about things like that.
17:59There's an artery in the neck,
18:02the carotid.
18:04If you apply pressure on it the right way,
18:06the victim dies,
18:08and there's no evidence of murder.
18:10You can't bluff me, Griswold.
18:11Shut up!
18:13I...
18:13I took...
18:14I came out here...
18:15I took...
18:16To kill you.
18:17Then I...
18:18To choke my life out of you.
18:20Like this.
18:24I changed my mind.
18:26You fool.
18:28You crazy fool.
18:29Get out of here.
18:29Yes, Denson.
18:30I changed my mind.
18:31You're going to die in the electric chair.
18:33I told you to get out.
18:34I'm going to prove that you killed Ellen.
18:35You can't because I didn't.
18:37A man was seen leaving the house
18:38on the morning Ellen was murdered.
18:39You were that man, Denson.
18:40You knew I was up at Grandview Lake.
18:41You waited until I was away.
18:43You forgot something, Griswold.
18:45It couldn't have been me.
18:46I'll prove it!
18:46You forget.
18:48At the same time you were up at Grandview Lake,
18:51I was there too.
18:56I went back in my mind,
18:57and I remembered that Carl Denson
18:59had been at Grandview Lake
19:01while I was there.
19:03But I knew Denson was the murderer.
19:05He was the man in the black hat and coat.
19:08He had found some way
19:10to come back to town
19:11and kill Ellen.
19:13But I had to prove it.
19:15I started out to retrace his steps
19:17on the night of the murder.
19:18The train let me off
19:24at the Grandview Lake station
19:25at four in the morning.
19:27I phoned for the village taxi
19:28and ordered the sleepy driver
19:29to take me out to the lodge.
19:30I don't like to make trips
19:34this time of the night, mister.
19:36Don't worry.
19:36I'll pay you extra for it.
19:37Only hurry.
19:38I can't go much faster.
19:41Trouble with you city folks
19:42always hurrying to get nowhere.
19:44Reminds me of the fella
19:45I drove last week.
19:47City fella too.
19:49Get off the 401 just like you.
19:51Says he's in a hurry.
19:52Wait a minute.
19:53Yes?
19:54You said he got off that same train?
19:55Yep.
19:55That's what he said.
19:56Same train as you.
19:57What day was that?
19:59Uh, let's see.
20:00Was it Tuesday?
20:01Tuesday?
20:02Yes, yes.
20:03It was Tuesday that.
20:04What did he look like?
20:05What do you want to know from that?
20:06Tell me.
20:06What did he look like?
20:07Well, he was a tall fella.
20:10Didn't talk not tall.
20:12Couldn't see much of his face
20:13and his coat collar up.
20:15The thing about that
20:16wasn't cold either.
20:17Was he wearing a black hat?
20:19The only thing of it
20:20guess he was.
20:22Yeah.
20:23Black hat and coat.
20:24Where did you drive him to?
20:26Same place you're going, mister.
20:28Grandview Lake Lodge.
20:32That proved it.
20:33I was right.
20:34Denson had gone to town
20:35to kill Alan.
20:36Then when he finished
20:36he returned on the early morning train.
20:38I had him now.
20:40There was just one more step left.
20:43When I walked into the lodge
20:44George, the night clerk
20:46was behind the desk.
20:47Good morning, Dr. Griswold.
20:49Hello, Griswold.
20:50George.
20:51We weren't expecting you
20:52but we have a room.
20:53I'm not staying.
20:54Oh?
20:55George, I need your help.
20:56Yes, of course.
20:57What is it?
20:58It's important.
20:58You must remember something.
20:59Remember?
21:00About Dr. Denson.
21:01You know him?
21:02Yes, certainly.
21:02Well, this happened just one week ago
21:04last Tuesday morning
21:04at the same time.
21:05You were on duty then?
21:06Yes.
21:07And you would have seen
21:08anyone walk through the lobby here?
21:09Yes, I would.
21:10Dr. Denson returned to the lodge
21:12last Tuesday morning.
21:13He was wearing a black hat and coat.
21:14He came in here
21:15at this same time.
21:16You saw him?
21:18No.
21:18But you must have.
21:19I didn't.
21:20He came in here.
21:21I have proof.
21:22The cab driver who brought him here
21:23from the station
21:23saw him enter the lobby.
21:24I didn't see Dr. Denson that morning.
21:26You're lying.
21:27You did.
21:28No, sir.
21:30The only person who came in
21:32early last Tuesday
21:33was you.
21:34What?
21:35You came in, Dr. Griswold.
21:38You wore a black hat and coat
21:39and you asked me
21:40for a key to your room.
21:43Me?
21:44That's right, Ken.
21:47It was you all the time.
21:50Al.
21:51I'll be good, Ken.
21:53Don't make me use this gun.
21:55Al, did you hear what he said?
21:57Yeah.
21:59That means
21:59I killed her.
22:02I was waiting for you, Ken.
22:04I knew you'd come.
22:06I'll let you find out for yourself.
22:08I don't remember.
22:10You're a doctor.
22:11You know about those things.
22:12Split personalities
22:13and stuff like that.
22:15You just can't see it
22:16in yourself, I guess.
22:17But her body
22:18in the closet.
22:19That was you, too.
22:21I followed you out
22:22to the cemetery.
22:22You thought she was still alive.
22:24That's why you put
22:25the knife in her back.
22:26I'm no expert
22:27on those things, Ken,
22:28but that's the way
22:30it looks to me.
22:32Okay.
22:33Let's go.
22:35I couldn't go back
22:36with him.
22:36Not that way.
22:36I ran across the lobby.
22:38Stop, Ken.
22:39Tell him I'm not to shoot.
22:40I got to the door
22:41and then...
22:41Oh!
22:42Oh!
22:43Well, it burned
22:45in my chest.
22:47Al turned me
22:48over on my back.
22:49I'm sorry, Ken.
22:51It's all right, Al.
22:54This is just the way
22:55I wanted it.
23:00Al's gone for a doctor.
23:01I haven't got much
23:03longer.
23:05No.
23:06I won't be here
23:08when Al comes back.
23:12I won't give them
23:13any trouble
23:14with this one.
23:16The cause of death.
23:20This one's easy
23:21to determine.
23:22Say, no wonder
23:34that Ken Grizzle
23:35was glad to die.
23:37Some wives
23:37are bad enough alive,
23:39but imagine being
23:39hand-pegged
23:40by a corpse.
23:42That's the trouble
23:43with the folks
23:43you meet around here.
23:44They're dead,
23:45but they just
23:46don't know enough
23:47to lie down.
23:47Oh, by the way,
23:51there's a good moral
23:52in tonight's
23:52nerve-shattering narrative.
23:54If you're thinking
23:55of doing away
23:56with your spouse,
23:57forget it.
23:59Brother,
23:59you haven't got
24:00a ghost of a chance.
