Adam Dale 3 for 18 in 7 Overs 3 Mdns vs South Africa 2nd ODI, Gqeberha, March 31, 1997
Transcript
00:00Adam Dale is a former Australian cricketer.
00:03He played in two test matches and 31-day international for Australia between 1997 and 2000.
00:10One of his most memorable performances came on March 31, 1997, during the second ODI against
00:16South Africa in Port Elizabeth.
00:18In that match, Adam Dale bowed brilliantly, taking three wickets for just 18 runs in his
00:24seven overs, including three median overs.
00:26His amazing swing-balling at the start of the match helped Australia, limit South Africa
00:31to a low total of 221 runs.
00:34Later, the Australian team chased down the target comfortably and won the match by seven
00:39wickets.
00:40Let's enjoy and relive the brilliant spell of Adam Dale.
00:45Australia took one for 55 a couple of days ago at East London.
00:51And in the air, first ball wicket.
00:53So Adam Dale has done for Australia what Mark Taylor has wanted.
00:57First ball into the very safe hands of Mark Waugh at second slip.
01:00A bit of bounce, a bit of movement and right on line.
01:04Mark Taylor having won the toss and sent South Africa into bat, couldn't have wished for a
01:08better start.
01:09He's at the ball.
01:11And that's come back a long way.
01:14An outswing bowler predominantly Adam Dale and that one has come back giving Adam Gilchrist
01:19some work to do.
01:20Overcast conditions.
01:21In the air and out.
01:27Well, there's a bit of discussion.
01:29Michael Bevan has no problems with it, of course.
01:32Umpire Cyril Mitchell says, you are out, so straight to cover, no footwork, just stood
01:37there, delivered at the ball and Adam Dale picks up his second wicket and Michael Bevan
01:42takes a good low down catch at cover or extra cover and the second South African wicket falls.
01:48High score of 124 in Nairobi against Pakistan, Darryl Cullinan, man of the match a couple
01:54of days ago, so he's in good form.
02:00Cullinan has very good footwork when he's in form and he is in form.
02:03Another wicket for the Australians in the over, South Africa two for four.
02:07Adam Dale, be very pleased with that, so would the Australian selectors.
02:13And in the air, no man at bat pad, an anxious look immediately by Cullinan.
02:17But no man can get in fast enough to take the catch, so Adam Dale is certainly enjoying
02:23these very good bowling conditions.
02:25Gully.
02:26And again, lovely delivery and appeal, but umpire Mitchley doesn't even look at Adam
02:33Dale.
02:34He's not too pleased, Dale.
02:35Dale didn't believe that he hit it.
02:37Gilchrist.
02:38Yeah.
02:39Dale, there's a lot of confidence at the moment.
02:45Down the wicket again, but this time it doesn't work.
02:50Adam Dale's got a big grin on his face.
02:52There's a big grin on his face.
02:54And Cullinan tried to repeat the dose that he saw Callis give Adam Dale early in the over,
02:59a little inside edge onto the stumps.
03:02And things falling apart here for South Africa.
03:05There's a big blow to South Africa.
03:08A Premier batsman, Darryl Cullinan, played so well.
03:12Adam Dale may not have been the fastest baller or the most talked-about name in Australian
03:24cricket, but he was definitely a highly skilled and dependable player.
03:29Born on 30 December 1968, Adam Dale started his cricket journey in Victoria, but due to
03:35limited chances and a job transfer, he moved to Queensland in his mid-twenties.
03:41This change turned out to be a smart decision.
03:43In the 1995-1996 season, he was selected for Queensland's one-day team, and he quickly
03:49impressed everyone with his amazing control over swing and seam.
03:53Though he did not have raw pace, he made up for it with a precise line and length.
03:58His ability to move the ball in the air and off the pitch earned him a place among the
04:03rare few who made their first-class and international debut within a year of starting state-level
04:09cricket.
04:10Adam Dale was known for his consistency.
04:13He had a short and simple run-up and bowled medium-paced out-swingers with excellent accuracy.
04:19He bowled very close to the stumps, sometimes even brushing the baller's end during his
04:23delivery stride.
04:25In one-day cricket, he became famous for his tight economy rate, giving away very few runs.
04:30Although he only played two test matches, he was a regular in Australia's ODI squad, featuring
04:36in 30 ODIs.
04:37He was also part of the 1999 Cricket World Cup winning team, a proud moment in his career.
04:43Unfortunately, a shoulder injury sidelined him for nearly two seasons and eventually he
04:49decided to retire at the end of the 2002-03 season.
04:53Over his long career, Adam Dale played for several clubs.
04:57Apart from his balling, Adam Dale is also remembered for one of the greatest catches ever in cricket,
05:03taken during a match for Queensland in the 1997-98 season.
05:06In short, Adam Dale was the kind of cricketer who quietly did his job and earned the respects
05:13of teammates and fans through discipline, skill and commitment.
05:16Truly an unsung hero of Australian cricket.
