Kemi Badenoch has told business chiefs that the Tories would “cut taxes responsibly” and end a system which she said was “paying people not to work.” Speaking at the British Chambers of Commerce event, the Conservative leader said: “This is about running government like you run your businesses, focused on outcomes, not process". 00:00Our debt interest is well over £100 billion a year.
00:04Welfare spending is out of control.
00:06The state is bloated, productivity has flatlined,
00:09and the economy is stuck in first gear.
00:12Our country is living beyond its means.
00:15We are spending more than we're earning,
00:17and it means the cost of living crisis for working people
00:19is getting worse and worse.
00:22We need a totally different approach,
00:25one that ensures that things are easier for the makers,
00:28the people who work hard, create wealth and jobs,
00:31and deliver frontline public services,
00:33because currently this country has too many people who are taking,
00:37whether it is those who sit at home with the curtains drawn
00:40while others go out to work,
00:42or those who skip the queue and arrive here illegally,
00:45only to be given privileged access to social housing,
00:47the NHS, and our generous welfare system.
00:51Yet, despite having a supermajority in Parliament,
00:54the Prime Minister is in the fight of his life.
00:56He is trying to save some of the government's welfare changes,
01:00changes that don't even cut the overall welfare budget.
01:03They only slightly slow down the rate of increase,
01:07and that is because his MPs are too scared to make difficult decisions.
01:11But we have to make difficult decisions
01:13if we're going to sort our economy.
01:16Britain needs real welfare reform
01:17if we're to incentivise takers to become makers,
01:21if we're to get people into jobs.
01:23And that is the difference between us and our opponents.
01:27Because Labour see business as something to regulate and tax,
01:30reform want to turn back the clock and nationalise utilities.
01:34We see you, business, as partners in building Britain's future.
01:39You know when spending isn't delivering value.
01:41Government needs to know the same.
01:43This is about running government like you run your businesses,
01:46focused on outcomes, not process.
