00:00this is the tom jaw blue hole located just up the southeastern coast of mexico the mouth of
00:08the underwater cave stretches nearly 500 feet across and when it was first discovered in 2021
00:14experts believed it was around 900 feet deep now new measurements have revealed that not
00:19only is it deeper than that it's likely the deepest blue hole ever discovered so why are
00:24the initial measurements no longer reliable well the tom jaw blue hole contains what is called a
00:28picnic line which is a clearly defined boundary of waters with differing densities and since the
00:33depth of extremely deep holes like this are usually measured using sonar or sound waves those become
00:38diffused and scatter when entering materials of differing densities which is why researchers
00:42have since lowered an observation cable down into the depths however after the entirety of the more
00:47than 1500 foot long cable was extended it still never touched the bottom meaning it's even deeper than
00:53that what's more experts say that their data revealed the conditions deep within the blue hole
00:58converge with those of the caribbean sea meaning this whole might well in fact actually be a tunnel
