Why Wichita Is the “Air Capital of the World”
Historic hub: Since the 1920s–30s, pioneers like Cessna, Beechcraft, Stearman, and Travel Air made Wichita dominant in aircraft manufacturing Production powerhouse: More than 250,000 aircraft have been produced in the area—the most of any city globally
Industry leader: Today, over 450 aerospace companies (Bombardier, Airbus, Spirit AeroSystems) operate here.
Airport Spotlights: Where Planes Land in Wichita
Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport (ICT)
The main commercial airport, opened in 1935 (originally Municipal Airport), now featuring three runways and serving ~1.7 million passengers in 2023
Colonel James Jabara Airport (AAO)
A public general aviation field 9 mi NE of downtown, with one 6,100-ft runway. Notably, the 747 Dreamlifter once mistakenly landed here instead of McConnell
Cessna Aircraft Field (CEA)
A private-use runway southeast of the city, owned by Cessna, used primarily for testing and limited ops
Beech Factory Airport & McConnell AFB
Key military and corporate aviation facilities. McConnell AFB hosts KC 135s, E 4/Night watch, and is regularly visited by military and prototype aircraft.
