00:00Mr Speaker, for decades it has been the stated policy of the UK and our allies that Iran
00:07must never obtain a nuclear weapon.
00:11No one who cares about the security of our country or the future of the Middle East could
00:17live with that eventuality.
00:20For decades we have worked to prevent it, and on Saturday night the US took a big step
00:27towards resolving that threat.
00:30There is also an opportunity now to push for a ceasefire in Gaza, and we must seize it.
00:38Mr Speaker, I have been discussing this with other leaders, and we will keep pushing to
00:43put the region on a better path.
00:46Yesterday NATO allies stepped up as well to meet this moment and create an alliance which
00:53is stronger, fairer and more lethal than ever.
00:59Together we signed a new defence investment pledge of 5 per cent of GDP by 2035.
01:07It has kept this country safe for decades.
01:10But we recognise the grim reality today that the nuclear threat is growing.
01:17So we are renewing our existing at-sea capability, and we are going still further.
01:23I can tell the House today that we will procure at least 12 F-35A fast jets, and we will make
01:30them available to bear nuclear weapons if necessary.
01:34There is a path to a just and lasting peace, but it will only come through flipping the pressure
01:41onto Putin.
01:43His position is weaker than he claims.
01:46So I urged all our partners, including the US, to step up the pressure now, with more sanctions
01:53and more military support, to bring Russia to the table to agree an unconditional ceasefire
02:00leading to serious negotiations.
