00:00Hello and welcome to another edition of the Goalmouth Action podcast where we're joined by
00:06Sam Morton who's at Devonshire Park this week for the Eastbourne Tennis Tournament, for the
00:12pre-Wimbledon Eastbourne Tennis Tournament. We'll come on to a bit of the tennis later Sam but I
00:17just wanted to speak to you first of all about Brighton and Hove Albion obviously. It's still
00:23the close season, the transfer window is very much up and running and one player they've been
00:29linked with Harvey Elliott who's been doing very well for the England under-21s and it's his two
00:36goals yesterday that helped Lee Carsley's young Lions progress through to the final where they'll
00:41play Germany this weekend. A, what have you made of Elliott's performances for the under-21s and
00:49it looks as though he's going to leave Liverpool, he's been linked with a number of clubs, is he a
00:54potential Brighton signing do you think? Yeah, no, hello Darren and yeah I think it's a really
01:00interesting one for Brighton and as you say they've been linked with a £40 million move for
01:05England's under-21 star Harvey Elliott, he was obviously the hero as he fired them into the
01:10final of the European Championships and England will play Germany in Saturday's final of the under-21
01:17Championships after they beat the Netherlands 2-1 and it was Elliott who scored an 86-minute winner
01:23after his opening goal was cancelled out and I should mention as well Brighton's Jack Beedle,
01:28James Beedle and Jack Hinchwood also starred with Beedle performing well on goal and Hinchwood
01:34was faultless at left-back as well but yes it's a it's a really interesting one for Brighton because
01:40he's a versatile midfielder and he's keen to kick-start his career because quite clearly he's got so much of a lot of people who are going to do it.
01:47And to be able to do this on an international stage obviously under-21 level is really impressive
01:52and it's it's obviously a really promising young team that England have got there that lots of
01:57players will be looking to to get into that the first team for England and Elliott will be one of
02:02those and he's a quality player that deserves to be starting week in week out and it's probably hard
02:07to expect that at Liverpool and injuries and a fierce competition for places at Anfield obviously limit
02:12the chances he can get he just had two Premier League starts and 18 appearances this season
02:18and it could be a typical Albion signing he has experienced at 22 years old there's always plenty of time
02:25to improve and could see his price increase after a few seasons at the Amex so it's something Brighton
02:30always consider and when paying large fees is it's kind of that that potential to improve
02:36yeah as well yeah I think there's definite definite interest there from Brighton and it'll be
02:41be interesting to see what what happens and it's a shame that I don't know I think if Eddie will be
02:46fit for the final I think he picked up picked up a bit of an injury um he said he was in quite a bit
02:51of pain um yeah so yeah fingers crossed he'll be okay for the final he'll be okay yeah I think it was
02:58in his celebration wasn't it did he do a knee slide or something and he injured himself
03:02yeah he said the pitch was uh the pitch was quite dry and uh he scored the goal and then
03:09in the moment did a knee slide and then injured uh injured his knee uh in doing it so hopefully it's
03:15nothing uh uh nothing too serious but yeah it'd be really unfortunate if that's if that's the reason
03:20why he's picked up the reason why yeah uh yeah that's an unusual one but yeah hopefully he'll be
03:26he'll be in the final but um could you see him fitting into that Brighton squad because they've
03:31obviously you know that they've got a lot of players in that number 10 role haven't they
03:34obviously Jorginho Rutter um Brian Gruder can play there as well Matt O'Reilly if he if he stays
03:42um it's an interesting one isn't it because he's quite versatile so he can play in a number of
03:46positions I think he would probably he would be a starter wouldn't he in that yeah I'd imagine so
03:52yeah I mean Brighton obviously well stacked for attacking midfield options aren't they um but I think
03:56he's certainly one that would make a difference uh obviously their current transfer record is the 40
04:00million they paid for the Leeds um United star at the time Jorginho Rutter um and a move earlier you
04:06would assume would probably surpass that um with it will probably demanding a hefty fee for
04:11for a player of his of his ability um Rutter plays obviously number 10 role for Brighton with um
04:17Brian Gruder young Cooper Minter and Sonny March um all options as well and obviously yeah this
04:23situation's quite fluid isn't it obviously with Matoma and Pedro obviously I know he's probably
04:27on his um on his way out of the club but I don't even see so again his his um future is uncertain
04:33Edmund Ferguson is struggling for kind of form uh obviously at West Ham as well when his time there
04:39so be interesting to see what what happens when obviously back at Brighton and what the plans are
04:43for him Matt O'Reilly I've seen being linked with a potential move after a difficult first season
04:48at Brighton so all sorts of different moving parts yeah yeah yeah yeah no it's uh it's going to be
04:55quite an interesting situation to watch isn't it especially in terms of those who who leave
04:58Brighton you've obviously got Karam Atoma has been linked Joe Pedro's been linked Matt O'Reilly as well
05:04we've got Julio and CCO Evan Ferguson what's so that you know there's five players automatically there
05:10who could be um who whose futures look quite uncertain so yeah yeah interesting interesting
05:17one to to keep an eye on but um but yeah you mentioned them earlier Sam obviously Jack
05:22Hinshelwood and James Beadle they've they've performed pretty well haven't they obviously
05:26Hinshelwood shown his shown his versatility again he's been playing at left back for um uh for the
05:32young lines and um he he did pretty well didn't he he's he's such such a good player that Brighton have
05:38you know he's been at Brighton since um uh since he was eight years old he's been through the academy
05:43um and you know he's had a great season and he's he's just going to be a great player for Brighton
05:50isn't he for the next few seasons for the next hopefully 10 years or so yeah brilliant no 100% he's um
05:55he's real top quality and kind of the new Pascal Gross really um yeah he was there kind of I've already
06:01made replacement when uh when the German left because he really could play pretty much anywhere on the
06:05pitch except for goalkeeper really um and you could probably say the same for Hinshelwood he just
06:11just slots in wherever he's needed such a workhorse and does all the kind of the hard the hard yards
06:18and just goes about his business um really kind of effectively and doesn't always get all the
06:23headlines but he's he's always really kind of um a man to depend on and obviously he had a great um
06:29scoring run at the end of uh end of the season as well uh for Brighton we know we know he's good in
06:34the air and he's um such a threat making those late runs into the box yeah he actually had a big
06:39headed chance for for the under 21s which I think it might have been he did yeah he probably would
06:44have expected better from himself because he as we know he's so good in the air yeah um and yeah no
06:50quality player and it's great to see him getting the um the opportunities for for the England under 21s
06:56and hopefully he'll start the final as well yeah yeah where do you see him next season as a
07:00midfielder or do you think it's Hazel is just going to use him where where's where where needed
07:06yeah it's it's a good problem to have isn't it i guess obviously it's a good problem to
07:13if obviously in an ideal world you probably have him in midfield i would say yeah um but then
07:19obviously if there's any injuries in defense he's a perfect perfect um player to to go pretty much
07:25anywhere um in that defense really obviously particularly at full back so yeah no i think
07:31there's there's lots of um lots of kind of positions you can play in and have an impact which
07:36is which is brilliant for any footballer really and it really puts him in good stead to make lots
07:40more appearances than you might do if you can only play one position that's it yeah yeah exactly that
07:45exactly that and also a quick mention on james beadle as well how do you assess brighton's goalkeeping
07:50situation if obviously got barton bruggan karl rushworth as well uh james beadle looks as though
07:55he's going to go out on loan to to birmingham um for the season but he he's probably he looks a
08:02long-term successor maybe to for bruggan if if he ever did leave didn't it looks as though
08:06bruggan's going to stay at brighton for next season um there were links with him for buying munich but
08:12the talk seems to have quieted down a bit and it looks as though bruggan will have another season
08:17at brighton at least and then maybe someone like beadle could you know step in after you know if
08:23if if and when the bruggan does leave yeah yeah well we've heard that obviously there's some as you
08:29say some kind of interest in for bruggan he's obviously attracting interest being the number
08:33one neverland's goalkeeper and he's just getting better and better in a brighton shirt and obviously
08:38had that season where he was rotating with jason still under the third day and then um personally
08:42came in and was like enough of that we're having one one first team goalkeeper and i remember you
08:49spoke to her about that didn't you yes yeah yeah he he was very quick to to say he wasn't keen on that
08:58idea of having two goalkeepers rotating um which was yeah well it was a bizarre one from
09:05de serbi's um tenure at the club yeah um but yeah and i think for bruggan's been done really well
09:11in a brighton shirt obviously getting better and better as i say and had a really really strong
09:14season um i remember him saying in in his final interview with the with the media after the the
09:20spurs game and he said he's happy with how it's gone but there's so much more he can do and so many
09:26more improvements he can make um i think his penalty saving record was one that's pointed out
09:31something he could potentially improve um but yeah i would not be surprised if some big clubs come in
09:36for bruggan so having having these young goalkeepers in rushworth and and beadle is is fantastic for from
09:43a brighton point of view and to have those options and to see how how they're developing on kind of
09:47the loan spells or whatever happens and and to have that backup plan if if a bruggan was to leave is
09:53is really great and this experience that beadle was getting with england is is great and yeah
09:58roads really well for the future yeah yeah no it's served it will serve them in in good stead that's
10:04that's for sure and he's always always been impressed with the bruggan like even when he
10:07speaks in the interviews afterwards as well he sounds like such a uh you know a solid character
10:12as well doesn't he to have other clubs so i think uh it'll be good if he has one more season beader
10:17will then have a very competitive year hopefully on loan with birmingham who um who've got you know
10:22high ambitions themselves so uh so yes looking looking pretty good for brighton in in that respect um
10:29in terms of players who may be may be on the move though um sam there's this persistent talk with
10:35igor julio um it was a bit part player last season has sustained the hamstring injury as well didn't he
10:42uh last january i think it was against arsenal uh in the 1-1 draw and that kept him out for the rest of
10:48the season um and there's talk that he may be on his way to real sociedad um how would what do you
10:55think about that and how would you assess his sort of time at brighton so far yeah yeah no it's a
11:01strange one isn't it with eagle because he missed such a large part of the season
11:04um for brighton for injury and he hasn't really kind of hasn't really kind of shown his best form
11:11in a brighton shirt there's been glimpses he's had some real um real um difficult matches as well
11:16um and you kind of felt that he needed a bit more time to settle and the injury really came
11:21a bad time and he hasn't really had the had the opportunity to to really show what he's what
11:28he's all about in that sense um but yeah reports do indicate that we have social dad made significant
11:32progress in negotiations with eagle himself expression expressing openness to the move
11:37um the transfer for the 27 year old brazilian is driven by associate as need to bolster their defense
11:42um as west ham's name a guard is due to return to uh west ham after a loan spell um so yeah so
11:53according to spanish outlet as social dad and eagle have reached an understanding with almost everything
11:57agreed and newspaper said talks between the two clubs were underway and brighton are open to a deal
12:03um so yeah again it's it's a shame if he does leave um because he struggles to establish himself from
12:09his 50 15 million pound move from viorentina made 49 appearances and is contracted until june 2027
12:15um so yeah i mean if he does move on we obviously wish him well but if he does stay i think there's
12:20definitely more we can offer yeah yeah yeah he's never really been a regular has he he's always
12:25sort of been just a little bit behind webster dunk uh then obviously van hecker as uh uh as well
12:31but when he's when he has been called upon he's been he's sort of been fairly fairly solid
12:35doesn't he so it's um he seems to be a good a good squad player but with the additions that
12:40brighton have made uh this this summer as well with diogo coppola uh coming in as as well in
12:47particular um i think that's um brighton have probably covered themselves in that area would
12:52you say yeah yeah no i think so i think it's it's definitely a position which brighton have
12:58looked to strengthen in the summer yeah um because that's as we know it was it was a big problem
13:03um last season with the injuries they had uh lewis dunk being out of form and yeah i think it's
13:10it's definitely something which brighton rightly have looked to to address in in in the chancellor
13:15window with the with the signs they've made so far both experienced and um with youth as well so
13:20looking for the immediate solutions as well as uh the long-term ones so yeah i think that it does it
13:26does bode well and eagle may be looking at the situation that if he's if he's obviously got more
13:30competition than he already had then yeah he's probably he's probably looking for for for more
13:35minutes firstly minutes and you can't really can't really uh deny him that opportunity if it if it comes
13:40up for him and if it's a good move for brighton as well if the if he's right then it's good for all
13:44parties yeah yeah they've got oliver uh is it boscagley as well coming in from a free transfer isn't it
13:50from psv einhoven as well i think yeah it's a similar sort of age isn't it they've got him on a free and
13:55he's about 27 years of age so so like you say they've they've covered themselves with the experience
14:00there as as well so they look as though they've got a player who's hopefully ready to go although
14:05he hasn't played in the premier league um but he's more experienced champions league football as well
14:11and then they've got diego coppola as well who can uh so hopefully you know progress he looked really
14:16good by the way in for italy under 21s uh in the euros i saw a couple of his matches and um
14:22yeah brighton look they've got another another good player on their hands there so so yeah much
14:29to uh much to look out for and just at fullback sam um wesley franca he's um flamingo flamingo right
14:36back um he's been linked with a 20 million move to uh to brighton i have to confess i don't really
14:43know too much about uh wesley franca but um it just in general sam do you think right back is an area
14:49they need to to look at they've obviously got tarik lampty who signed a one-year extension
14:54and joel veltman as as well yes yes it definitely is an area that they need to be looking at because
15:01both veltman and lampty have been known to have their injury problems particularly lampty who
15:05really struggles to put a run of games together and and veltman's obviously getting to that stage
15:10of his career where he probably wouldn't be expected to to start week in week out um we've mentioned
15:14already about hinterland standing in when needed um and obviously other players as well i mean
15:19caddy oglu as well obviously can can stop in at fullback in midfield so there's definitely options
15:24but i think they can um go in for for wesley franca from flamingo it's um it's another promising
15:29one this as you say they think flamingo valuing closer to 30 to 40 million yeah following his standout
15:35performances at the club world cup um but he's known for his attacking flair and pace which could
15:40see him fitting well um fitting well into hertsford's system and man city and chelsea also
15:45bleed to be keeping tabs on him um he has two brazilian caps and he said recently he's ready
15:50to test himself in europe the premier league is a dream for any player and his agent mcl sports
15:56recently added wesley's focus is on flamingo until the club world cup end but open to discussions
16:00with clubs like brighton um so yeah that's an interesting one he actually name checked brighton
16:05in in a quote which yeah it's well i guess if he's named if he's named brighton in in that quote
16:11and maybe that brighton are leading the chase for him and we've mentioned a few times that
16:15these kind of signings it's just typical brighton and the players are looking at brighton as the
16:20perfect place to go to develop their um their career and look to to really break through into
16:26european football in the premier league yeah no it's um that's true and if they get harvey elliott
16:32and franca as well that's another big transfer window for them isn't it they've already spent
16:3670 million um with the likes of the the greek teenage teenagers cheryl ampers cost two less
16:42and stefanos tissomas um they've got uh tommy tommy watson's joined and then coppola as well
16:48so that's that'll be another sizable spend won't it for brighton if if if they can get harvey elliott
16:55and and franca as well yep 100 it's um obviously a lot of the big money signings last summer
17:01weren't complete success through injury or other reasons and all sorts of things so
17:08a lot of those players will be like new signings and this season especially
17:11it'll feel like a new signing when he comes back um so yeah i feel like if they've got more
17:17money in the in the bank to to spend and to to address those those weaker areas in the team
17:24and obviously um considering any x's as well obviously we know about joe joe pedro and judo
17:30and c so um potentially moving on so you need to kind of replace replace those players particularly
17:35pedro um so yeah i think it's it's a good move to to spend big uh i think you need to to keep up
17:41keep up with um with the pack in today's market yeah yeah no it's you're right it's so competitive
17:48if you stand still from one transfer window you can really be uh really left left behind but i agree
17:54with you you mentioned ferdi cagli there a couple of times and i'm i'm really hoping he can stay
18:01injury free because the the glimpses i saw of him last season watching him live i just think he's got so
18:09much potential he looks an absolute star if he can get a run of injury injury free matches and where he
18:16fits in the team i'm not too sure he can like you say he can play at fullback um he had some success
18:21on the right hand side um briefly before he got injured um so if he can recover from his injury i
18:28think i think you're right bright and have an absolute you know talent there that they haven't
18:32really seen the best of so fingers crossed uh fingers crossed for him as as well but um but yeah
18:39we're all over the transfer window so keep an eye out on the sussex world website uh for all the
18:43latest goings on at brighton but sam you're down at devonshire park um what's been happening there
18:49this week we've had the likes of emma raducanu um playing there this week uh i saw dan evans he had
18:55a great game um came through uh in three sets yesterday he was quite emotional at the end of
19:00that one as uh as well but um he was what's been the highlights this uh this week so far down at the
19:06tennis yeah no it's been a really entertaining week obviously we had obviously the downgrade of the
19:11um wta um women's event to 250 which there were some concerns about kind of uh obviously the
19:17fewer ranking points and and all sorts of things that could potentially affect the the quality of
19:22players that will be coming down to to eastbourne but it's been great it's been kind of unchanged i
19:28think we i've been speaking to yeah to players really including barbara krakikova who's basically
19:32we basically said that if there was like a better event the hospitality is improved
19:36um and raducanu spoke of of her of her kind of love for eastbourne being a cute town um she had
19:43to have a few complaints about the wind um both before and after her um monday and tuesday monday
19:50and tuesday was really windy wasn't it yes it was yeah it was very windy and um xiao fonseca as
19:56well was i've been really excited to watch because he's um yeah such an exciting um talent coming
20:02through the coming through the game and to have him in eastbourne's been been brilliant um as well
20:07uh obviously mentioned um dan evans superb win over tommy paul uh as well as um yeah really really
20:15great to see and he really brought the crowds to life actually yeah it was really really great to
20:19see i love his enthusiasm kind of he's always psyching himself up he's calling himself evo as he's
20:24going along trying to trying to really kind of psych himself up and yeah it's a really good win i
20:29mean tommy paul was a quality player yeah he is yeah and uh yeah obviously uh that was that was
20:34last night uh and then that was followed by giao fonseca versus taylor fritz which was arguably the
20:39biggest match of the schedule so far it was um yeah obviously defending champion in in fritz uh going
20:45up against the rising star in fonseca and that's due to continue today actually because uh both both
20:50players won a set fonseca leveled it up and it was too dark to to carry on so they're going to be
20:55continuing that one today um unfortunately bora kukikova had to pull out with an injury which is
21:01um really sad news she was used to start on centre court today so um yeah that that uh is obviously
21:08not going ahead um but billy harris is currently in action against ugu humber on court one there's
21:13still plenty of of top quality matches still to still to come and it's it's been a really entertaining
21:18week really enjoyed it yeah yeah and you've been in with a couple of press conferences with uh emma
21:23raducanu what was her what's her vibe been like this uh this week she's said she's been managing
21:28an injury um i saw some quotes from her yesterday said she needs to get her head back in the game
21:33ahead of uh ahead of wimbledon as uh as as well um it's been a mixed sort of tournament for her hasn't
21:41it in in a couple of in a couple of respects yeah she's also been managing that back injury that
21:46meant she missed the the berlin open there are a few concerns about that coming into the tournament
21:51and we spoke to her at a round table before her opening match and she was just saying that she's
21:55just managing it and um doing as best as she as she can and she she feels okay yeah she was obviously
22:01trying to manage those those windy conditions as we've mentioned and just trying to to get to get
22:07the best um best out of herself trying to play the best tennis she she can obviously she did really
22:12well here last year but uh winning uh as a top 10 player um for the first time in jessica
22:17begula um and yeah it's it's a shame that she the rally kind of was knocked out um a bit earlier this
22:23year um gets my joint and she she won the first set uh ran a car new but then she lost the second
22:29one six one and she she went five two down in the decider and he felt like it was slipping away
22:35really quickly and to be fair to her she brought it back to um to five all then got broken again
22:41for six five and then broke down once again to take it to tie break it was um crazy scenes on on
22:46center court yesterday for that one and and really unfortunately she uh she did lose out in the end
22:51and is out of this sport eastbourne heading to to wimbledon it'd be interesting to see kind of how
22:56how ready she is fitness wise and yeah how her body's holding up because i know i know the back's
23:03probably a difficult one to to heal quickly um so she's she didn't give too much away about about
23:09the the nature of of the injury and how it's affecting her um but fingers crossed she'll be
23:15she'll be fit and firing for wimbledon yeah it was a really competitive match wasn't it parts of that
23:20third set was um really sort of big hitting and uh i was very very impressed with uh my joint as
23:26as well it's the first time i've ever seen her play and um yeah she's she's got a really solid
23:31game isn't she she's uh checking her rise and from uh she's only is she 18 19 and she's really
23:3919 yeah risen up the rankings to the to the top 50 and i think she's going to be one to watch isn't
23:44she in the next year or so 100 yeah and she she really she really was impressive and obviously there
23:50was that bit of a wobble where she she obviously failed to serve for the match on on three occasions
23:54but then yeah but to win the match anyway just shows the the resilience and um yeah it's just
24:00kind of the the fighting spirit that she's got to to keep going and and to not let those those um
24:05missed opportunities um affect her really so that was really impressive and it was nice to hear from
24:09emma in in the press conference as well um actually just praise um praise maya for the performance and
24:16so she'll be rooting her rooting for her for the rest of the competition doesn't she yeah yeah yeah
24:20yeah no that'd be it'd be she'd be one to uh one to watch and uh i think if she does from the
24:27performance that she produced against radakarnu i think she could could go all the way especially
24:31now that you know with the withdrawal from the injury as uh as 100 yeah yeah definitely but yeah
24:37well um thanks uh thanks for going through that sam enjoy the enjoy the today's play and we'll be
24:42keeping an eye on the sussex world website for the uh for all the updates from uh from the eastbourne
24:47eastbourne tournament as well so uh thanks very much uh for joining us sam thanks darren
