Detained Chadian opposition leader Succes Masra begins hunger strike

Succes Masra, former Prime Minister of Chad and leader of the opposition party Les Transformateurs, began a hunger strike after more than a month in detention.

00:00Sikse Masra, former Prime Minister of Chad and lead of the opposition party Le Transformata,
00:05began a hunger strike after more than a month in detention.
00:09The announcement came in a letter to his supporters and made public on June 24.
00:15He also expressed confusion over his prolonged detention,
00:18stating that he's been there for over 40 days and still searching for reasons behind his detention.
00:25Masra, who ran for president in 2024 but lost, was arrested on May 16
00:30and faced serious charges including incitement to hatred, rebellion, complicity with armed groups
00:36and involvement in crimes such as assassination and arson.
00:40On June 19, his lawyer filed for provisional release but the request was denied by the court.
00:46His legal team maintained that Masra's detention is arbitrary.
00:50One of his French lawyers, Vincent Bregard, has called for international intervention,
00:57citing the case as a violation of Masra's rights.
