00:01United Nations Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression and Opinion, Irene Khan, criticizes the justice system in the Philippines for the slow progress in the case of Takloban-based journalist Frenchie Mae Cumpio.
00:13Cumpio has been detained for over five years since she was arrested in February 2020, along with activists Mariel Domechil and Alexandra Abinguna.
00:21They were first charged with illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and later in 2021 with financing terrorism.
00:28It's a travesty of justice because the individual, even if she is found innocent, would have spent almost as much as she would have in prison had she been found guilty.
00:43The lack of speed of the proceedings means that people are being punished without being found guilty.
00:52Khan also questions why the authorities still haven't decided on a detainee's application for bail.
00:58The Special Rapporteur visited the detainee at the Takloban City Jail in January 2024, becoming the first international visitor allowed to meet Cumpio.
