06:42Let me now turn to Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Dick Schoof, whose government

06:54We will continue our discussions in just a moment.

06:57But first, and with the media here, please, Dick Schoof, your introductory remarks.

07:02Thank you, Mark.

07:04Colleagues, friends, allies, on behalf of the Dutch government, welcome to The Hague.

07:11This is the first NATO summit ever to be held in the Netherlands.

07:18And we are honored to have you here in this city.

07:20It has been speaking in the language of peace and justice ever since the first Hague Peace

07:25Conference was held in 1899.

07:29I am convinced that after today, The Hague will also be known as the city of collective

07:33purpose, unity and resolve.

07:37After all, we are about to write history.

07:39We are about to make decisions leading to an unprecedented increase in our collective

07:44defence spending and a new financial balance in our alliance.

07:50Both are urgent.

07:51Both are necessary.

07:54And both will help make our advanced Atlantic bond even stronger.

07:59So we can do justice to our founding principles of democracy, liberty and the rule of law,

08:05as laid down in the Washington Treaty.

08:09The last NATO event held in The Hague was a foreign minister meeting in 1989.

08:14Just this iron curtain was beginning to break apart on the eve of the Cold War's end.

08:21And for a period we hoped and believed that relations with Russia would continue to thaw.

08:27But the end of history turned out to be an illusion.

08:32An illusion that was shattered for good when Russia brutally invaded Ukraine.

08:40So today there is a renewed awareness in our ranks that peace cannot be taken for granted.

08:45That it must be protected, that it must be protected constantly and with conviction.

08:50And yes, peace comes at a cost.

08:54We must act on this swiftly and decisively.

08:59So let's stand united and embrace The Hague Defence Investment Plan.

09:03Let's go to work and write that history today.

09:08So thank you for the media for joining us.

09:19But in the spirit of democracy, I have to ask you to leave the room now.
