00:00Can a place steal your heart?
00:02Cornwall for sure has a reputation as a romantic destination.
00:06The coast is not only home to nature, but also historical and legendary sights, such
00:12as this landmark of the south coast.
00:16Did you think I was in France for a second?
00:18I don't blame you.
00:19This looks a lot like the famous Mont Saint Michel in Normandy, but it's its smaller
00:23English cousin, Mount Saint Michael.
00:26Both places have the same name, that's because monks from Mont Saint Michel in France founded
00:31a branch of their monastery here.
00:34The path to the island is on a raised road that's only accessible at low tide.
00:39At high tide you have to take a boat.
00:43You don't want to miss the walk along the crossway.
00:45It's not every day you get to walk across the water onto an island, especially one with
00:50so much history.
00:53The gen home shows visitors like me around the island.
00:56Saint Michael's Mount has appeared in many films, including the series House of the Dragon.
01:02Part of what makes the island attractive are the legends surrounding it.
01:06Cornwall is known as the Land of Giants and Giants lived all up and down the length of Cornwall.
01:13And one lived here on the island and he was called Cornrun.
01:17He was a particularly mean and horrible giant who terrorized the local community.
01:21And so a little boy from Marazion came over and he did away with the giant in the middle
01:25of the night.
01:28If you want to get to the castle, you have to climb 60 meters up the granite steps.
01:34Check this out, the giant's heart.
01:38The castle has been inhabited by the same family since the 17th century.
01:43The oldest part is a small church from the 12th century.
01:47And of course it's dedicated to the patron saint of the island, Archangel Michael.
01:53Part of the castle is open to visitors in the summer months.
01:56So the St. Auburn family live here in their private apartments and then we have our formal
02:03rooms which are open for visitors to enjoy.
02:06This room is the blue drawing room and it is traditionally where we receive royalty if we
02:11have a royal visit.
02:13Like Queen Elizabeth II or King Charles when he was still prince.
02:20The view of the sea and the palace gardens is more than royal.
02:31You can actually walk in the footsteps of royalty here.
02:34These are bronze casts of King Charles and Queen Camilla.
02:39Same shoe size as King Charles.
02:43I take a boat back to the mainland.
02:47Because of the tide, visitors who walk may not get back with dry feet.
02:54Now I feel like relaxing so I head to St. Ives.
02:59The town is famous for its beaches.
03:02And it's a hot spot for artists too.
03:06I'm drawn to one of the very romantic cafes where the classic English afternoon tea is served
03:11along with freshly baked scones, clotted cream and jam.
03:16The climate in Cornwall is especially mild all year thanks to the Gulf Stream.
03:21That's why you find some of the most magnificent gardens in the UK here.
03:25I'll show you the lost gardens of Heligin which are 200 acres and have parts that date back
03:31to the 18th century.
03:34At the heart of the farm is the productive garden for fruits and vegetables which are grown
03:39as they were back in the day.
03:41And there's more to discover.
03:44Giants are hiding here too.
03:49My personal favorite is the jungle.
03:52And it's not even in a greenhouse.
03:54This valley has a microclimate that's 5 degrees warmer than Heligin's other gardens.
04:00Plants from all over the world grow here.
04:03It's time to grab a bite in the fishing village of Patsdow.
04:11I want to taste a specialty found all over Cornwall.
04:14Hello.
04:15Good morning.
04:16I would like to try a Cornish pasty.
04:18Or would you say the steak is the best?
04:20Oh, steak is the best.
04:21Yeah, I'll go for that.
04:22I'll go for that.
04:23Traditionally filled with beef, potatoes, onions and turnips, pasties now come in many variations.
04:29Finally, I venture to one of Cornwall's spookiest places, Falmouth.
04:34It has a long history of shipwrecks and dark legends.
04:37I'm taking a ghost tour.
04:39The tour lasts an hour and you'll also learn about the city's history.
04:48It takes place twice a week from April to November.
04:51Tickets cost 10 pounds and are best booked online.
04:55What about you?
04:56Would you like to explore this part of England?
04:58And what landmark would you like to visit the most?
