NSW Families Minister Kate Washington announces a $1.2 billion overhaul of the foster care system. Video via AAP
Transcript
00:00We inherited a system that was spiralling out of control.
00:04We had foster care numbers plummeting, case workers walking out the door.
00:10We had children, vulnerable children, being holed up in hotels and motels with unaccredited providers.
00:17A child who went through that experience described it as being like a doggy in a pound being moved from cage to cage.
00:25There is no greater example of the Liberal and Nationals' failure when it comes to essential services than the child protection system.
00:36And case workers say they need more support. Today we are delivering it.
00:41I've heard the children and young people who've been in the system have said that they haven't felt safe while they're in the very system that's near to the top of them.
00:50That is what today's investment is about. It's about reforming and rebuilding the system so we do provide that safety, stability, support and love that children who cannot live safely in their own homes can get once they come into care.
