00:00It was a warm Sunday morning when I decided to visit my sister, Hannah, and her family.
00:05Ever since her husband passed away two years ago, I tried to be present as much as I could
00:10for her and her only child, Jacob.
00:13He was a good kid.
00:14Smart, sensitive, but also shy.
00:17At 13, he was going through that awkward age, stuck between childhood and adolescence,
00:23where everything feels like the end of the world.
00:26I knocked lightly on the door before letting myself in,
00:28holding a bag of fresh bagels and cream cheese.
00:32Housekeeping.
00:33I called out jokingly, trying to lighten the mood as always.
00:37Hannah called out from the backyard.
00:39We're out here.
00:40Jacob's in his room.
00:42I gave her a quick wave and made my way through the house,
00:45heading toward the kitchen to put the food down.
00:47On my way there, I passed Jacob's room.
00:50The door was slightly open, and I heard a strange rustling sound,
00:54followed by a panicked,
00:56Oh no!
00:57I paused.
00:58Jacob.
00:59I asked.
01:01Don't come in, he yelled immediately.
01:03Now, I'm not someone who barges into a kid's personal space.
01:07But something about the tone in his voice wasn't the usual.
01:10I'm busy, kind.
01:11It was shaky.
01:12Nervous.
01:13Hey, buddy.
01:15I said gently.
01:16Is everything all right?
01:17No response.
01:19Jacob.
01:20Just go away, Uncle Matt, he said, his voice cracking.
01:23I gave it a beat before pushing the door open slightly.
01:27Just enough to peek in.
01:28And there he was, his cheeks red, clearly flustered.
01:32Not doing anything inappropriate, but surrounded by what I realized were homemade action figures.
01:38Duct tape, scissors, colored paper, and markers.
01:41Oh, I said, chuckling softly in relief.
01:46Caught you playing with your toys, huh?
01:48He groaned and buried his face in his hands.
01:51They're not toys, he muttered.
01:53I stepped in, careful not to invade his space.
01:57They look cool, Jacob.
01:58Did you make all of these?
02:00He glanced up at me, shame still all over his face.
02:04Don't tell Mom.
02:05I'm not going to tell her anything, I assured him, lowering myself onto the edge of his bed.
02:11You okay?
02:12He nodded hesitantly, then finally spoke.
02:15I...
02:16I make these little characters, and I pretend they're in this universe I created.
02:21I give them voices, stories, everything.
02:24It's dumb.
02:25Whoa, hold on, I said, picking one up.
02:29It was a cardboard figure with a cape made from an old sock.
02:33This guy looks like he's seen some battles.
02:36Jacob cracked a small smile.
02:38That's General Blast.
02:40He's a rebel commander.
02:42Cool name, I said sincerely.
02:44What's his story?
02:46Jacob blinked, caught off guard.
02:48You wanna know?
02:49Of course, I said.
02:51Tell me.
02:52And just like that, he opened up.
02:54He told me all about a fantasy world he created called Ardentis, where heroes fought for justice
03:00against evil warlords.
03:02There were flying ships powered by crystals, a city built on the back of a sleeping giant,
03:08and characters that, frankly, rivaled anything I'd seen in a movie or comic book.
03:13I sat there for over an hour, completely immersed.
03:16He had notebooks filled with sketches, outlines, and dialogue.
03:21His world was rich and imaginative.
03:24It wasn't dumb at all.
03:25It was brilliant.
03:26Jacob, I said when he finally paused to breathe.
03:30You know this is something really special, right?
03:33He shrugged.
03:34I don't know.
03:35Everyone at school thinks I'm weird.
03:38I don't do sports.
03:39I'm not loud.
03:40I just...
03:40I like being in my world more.
03:42I get that, I said.
03:45And, being different?
03:47That's not a bad thing.
03:49It's brave.
03:50His eyes lit up a little.
03:52You really think so?
03:54I know so, I said.
03:57When I was your age, I wrote entire scripts for fake radio shows in my room.
04:01I do all the voices, make sound effects, record them on cassette tapes.
04:06He looked at me wide-eyed.
04:08Really?
04:09Really?
04:10And now, look, I work in audio production.
04:13You think I could do something like that with my stories?
04:16I smiled.
04:18I think you could do something even better.
04:20That afternoon, I talked to Hannah privately.
04:23I told her about what I'd seen, not to embarrass Jacob, but to encourage her to support this creative spark.
04:30She listened carefully.
04:31I had no idea.
04:33He's been so withdrawn lately.
04:35I just thought he was playing video games all the time.
04:38Nope, I said.
04:40He's building a whole universe.
04:43Over the next few weeks, I made a point to visit more often.
04:46I brought him sketchbooks, helped him download free design software, even showed him how to make simple digital animations.
04:53Hannah signed him up for an online creative writing course.
04:56Slowly, Jacob bloomed.
04:58He started sharing his work online under a pseudonym, and before long, he had followers who were hooked on his serialized stories.
05:06One evening, he handed me a printed booklet with his first ten chapters, bound together with a piece of twine.
05:12For you, he said shyly.
05:15You're the first person who believed in it.
05:18I'll admit, I choked up a little.
05:20Fast forward two years.
05:22Jacob, now 15, won a regional teen writing contest.
05:27His story, The Ember War of Ardentis, was published in an anthology.
05:31He gave a speech at the local library where he thanked his mom and me.
05:35I thought being different made me weak, he said into the microphone, but I learned that being different is actually my superpower.
05:42Thanks to my uncle Matt, who caught me playing with my creations and didn't laugh, he listened.
05:48The crowd clapped.
05:49Hannah teared up.
05:50And I?
05:51I stood there beaming with pride.
05:54So yeah, one day, I caught my nephew playing with his characters, his world, his imagination.
05:59And I'm so glad I did.
06:02Because sometimes, what looks like a small, silly moment is actually the spark of something extraordinary.
