Alnmouth on the coast of Northumberland is the next destination for the Most Haunted team. There they investigate The Schooner Inn, a 17th century coaching inn that is reported to have more than 60 different ghosts.

00:44This week we've brought you to the Northumberland coastline, to a place that's had 3,000 ghost
00:49sightings since 1998.
00:57The Schooner Hotel in Almouth is said to be haunted by 60 ghosts.
01:06The Schooner Hotel in Almouth, Northumberland is a listed 17th century coaching inn.
01:11It's been the hub of Almouth Village since the first customer back in the 1600s.
01:17The inn sits on the coastline and has been connected with secret tunnels, murder, suicide
01:22and smuggling.
01:24So many ghosts have been witnessed here, this hotel has become quite famous for its hauntings.
01:29Is the Schooner Hotel as paranormally active as the owners and its guests make out?
01:34The place for hundreds of years was a famous seaport.
01:47All sorts of sloops and schooners sailed in and out of this place.
01:53There's stories of smugglers.
01:55For 350 years, from the 1600s, this place was a coaching inn.
02:00All sorts of famous people stopped off, stayed here.
02:05There's been reports of murders, suicides, hangings.
02:09All sorts of things have gone on here.
02:15Once used by smugglers, the hotel's cellar used to have a tunnel running all the way to the sea.
02:20Now, as you can see, it's blocked off.
02:23But mysterious lights have been seen here, along with strange, dark, ghostly figures.
02:29Carina and the girl called Emma, who works here, were actually going upstairs late at night,
02:36about 11 o'clock, to check that the fire doors were closed.
02:40When at the far end of the corridor, this thing, as I call it, it flew out of room 20
02:46and banged straight into the fire door and the noise was horrendous.
02:49However, what it was, did not go through the fire door.
02:52They thought it was a burglar. They both saw it.
02:55But, of course, their first impression is, it's real. It's a burglar.
02:59Then it started to come padding down the landing towards them,
03:03and their comments were, it was a large, black figure.
03:07We just ran. I mean, I don't know, I've never got out of a place so quickly in all my life.
03:11We just ran all the way downstairs.
03:13We said, there's a guy, he's broken into the hotel, you're going to have to come up quickly.
03:16And they came around looking for this burglar, because there was nothing there.
03:20But both of them saw it. Both of them swear they saw it.
03:24And how can two be wrong? I don't think they are.
03:35Almost every room here in the hotel has alleged spiritual activity,
03:40but room 28 apparently has the most.
03:45It's hardly surprising when suicides and a family massacre are supposed to have taken place in this room.
03:50People have witnessed strange noises, dark shadows, and also temperature changes.
03:56But most frightening of all, an evil presence.
03:59The worst bedroom, in my opinion, is room 28.
04:03It's haunted. It's not just haunted by one person. It's actually haunted by several, I believe.
04:09And you get some people, they won't even stay there.
04:11They go up to their room, and they won't stay there.
04:14They've got a feeling about the room.
04:16There's a massacre of a family.
04:19We don't actually know what happened, but it was part of the living quarters of the staff.
04:24And for all we know, during the night, perhaps, father came back drunk and lost it.
04:33And we believe that both wife and children were actually massacred upstairs.
04:38They still hear screams. They still hear crying of children.
04:42This corridor is supposed to be very haunted.
04:48Ghostly footsteps are heard when no-one's here.
04:51Also, the ghost of a maid has been seen on numerous occasions.
04:55A murder, allegedly, was committed in this area.
04:59But rooms 16 and 17 have an awful lot of paranormal activity.
05:04But it's in between those two rooms that are of most interest.
05:07We've actually found a blocked-off doorway.
05:10So what used to be behind the doorway?
05:14And could it hold the answers to the hauntings of this corridor?
05:18I've seen numerous things. I've seen figures at the end of beds.
05:22And I've seen figures in corridors, shadows.
05:25Just numerous things, really.
05:27We've got well over 3,000 reported sightings of ghosts within this place.
05:34When I say sightings, we're talking of seen it, heard it, smelt it, felt it,
05:39sensed it. It's extremely active.
05:42It's a very historic place.
05:45We've got a plethora of ghosts here just waiting for us.
05:54The schooner has 32 rooms.
05:56And of those, most of them are supposedly haunted,
05:59not forgetting the intertwining corridors.
06:02Phil Wyman, our paranormal investigator,
06:04spent some time getting to know its ghost stories and the layout of the hotel.
06:09But how does Phil feel about the night ahead?
06:11Tonight is going to be really interesting.
06:13What we've got to remember, we are in supposedly the most haunted hotel in England.
06:17They've got massacres, we've got suicides,
06:19we've got things that are seen regularly.
06:21Part of my job tonight, I feel, will be calming the crew down.
06:24The one that I'm concerned about is room 20.
06:30Because room 20 is the room where Carina and Emma actually saw that black figure come out of
06:38before it threw itself at the fire door.
06:40We've got over 3,500 sightings in this hotel.
06:43We try and link as many as we can to factual information.
06:47But what we really want to know is who and why and where and what exactly do they want.
06:54During the day, the hotel was very busy.
06:57But at night, the hotel became deathly silent.
07:00And suddenly, it didn't seem such a friendly place anymore.
07:04To help us in our investigation, we asked medium Derek Okora
07:08to join the crew for our stay overnight in the schooner hotel.
07:12Derek needed to walk through the building
07:14to see if he could pick up on any spiritual activity.
07:17He was drawn to room 28, where the family massacre had taken place.

07:50I feel that's purely and simply because just at that moment or that second,
07:55the residual energy changed and was being blocked from my feelings.
08:01And then suddenly I'm aware.
08:03I do know and I say it with total respect to us all here.
08:06I do know of an individual who comes into this room on a regular basis.
08:11He wears like a cap thing that's spun round to the side and he has got...
08:16The only way I can describe it is like a ponytail.
08:19And, erm, what happened here...
08:22Do you know what I can describe as, erm, used to knock people out and drag them and take
08:28them away?
08:29And that was, again, to the ships.
08:33I don't know.

08:35He belongs with the press gang.

08:42You know, in this area plenty of physical blood has been spilt here.
08:49Most definitely murders have occurred here.
08:52People's lives.

08:56And the only way I can put it is spiritually I'm going to the lights of the residual energy
09:00and it's one, two, three, if not four, souls losing their life.
09:05However, that was like a family condition.

09:26I feel these were the times someone who was involved, erm, with the, that side of looking
09:34after this place where horses were kept and what have you, was the one that was responsible
09:39for the lengths of the deaths of this, like, family unit.
09:44There's all two males.
09:46No, a male and a female.

09:49There's been two people who have taken their own lives here.

10:03Now, the, uh, it's surprisingly enough, the energies and the residual energy that's
10:13now, erm, in this ether, this atmosphere now, is what we could, not a byproduct of, of, erm,
10:19a spirit person, but the movement of spirit people, who are actually linked here, erm,
10:25and coming along the passageway, and for some reason there is a connection to this bedroom
10:30as it is now.
10:31Erm, maybe the familiarity of what it was, when it was, and that movement along the passageway,
10:37and coming in and settling for some reason in this bedroom.
10:41Erm, I feel there would have been history, erm, of either the lights, something like that,
10:47er, movement, especially noises in this room, er, has been evident in, even into the modern
10:53day now.
10:54Mm-hm.
10:55Erm, and I feel it's definitely been through the movement.
10:58Okay, I've got to say it this way.

11:02That one tells me, okay, that there are two individual, two individual spirit people,
11:08who are housed here, and that they are the ones that are mainly active here.
11:13Mm-hm.
11:14Two.
11:15But there's been a lot of things happen in this place, a lot of things, but there are
11:20two.
11:21I feel that one of these two, okay, would be the person who, the only way I can put it,
11:29either killed, massacred, whatever way you want to term it, in that other bedroom, those
11:34people, and is tormented and stayed in the atmosphere.
11:38You know in the other room where we've just come from?
11:40Yes.
11:41You said that there was a massacre in there, and two people committed suicide.
11:45Yes.
11:46And then you felt drawn to come into this room.
11:48Yes.
11:49Why did you feel drawn to come into this room?
11:51Because one of the two, I believe, who committed suicide, walked and walks the passageway up
11:59to this area.

12:01And does that constantly.
12:02Right.
12:03So there's the man who massacred the family, and then there's the man or person who killed
12:07themselves.
12:08Yes.
12:09There's the two spirits so far that are housed here.

12:13As we continued walking through the building with Derek, strange things seem to be happening
12:20to crew members behind the cameras.
12:23Gwen and I have actually just been keeping out of the way, listening.
12:26And as we heard you come out of the room, we came back into this room to hide.
12:30We've just walked past it.
12:32That light was not on in the bathroom when we came by.
12:35We've just popped back in here.
12:36The bloody light's on.
12:38And then, I know for a fact it wasn't on when we walked past.
12:41we walk past. I'm sitting on the toilet and I heard footsteps as if, and I'm
12:46thinking, I hope that's not the crew coming upstairs to film, why would they
12:49film in my bedroom? No, they can't film in my, the next minute it's as if a key went
12:54in the door, the door opened. I was stood in the bathroom and I heard the light
12:57switch off on the wall and I turned around and it was pitch black and there's
13:01nobody in there and there's nothing to answer for it but the door was locked
13:05and the room was pitch black so I turned the light on and shot out. Come outside
13:10the door and the door's ajar and I've definitely shut the door because I
13:14went to go to the loo and I'm going, hello? Nothing, no sound. I'm listening
13:19thinking, is anybody going down the stairs? It was just quiet as a mouse so I've
13:23gone to reception and asked them if the master key is still out and she said no
13:27John handed it back earlier, it's behind the desk and you're the only one with the
13:31key to room 32 who would open my door. There was definitely nobody else in the
13:37room and the door was locked. I don't know, there's something playing silly
13:41buggers with us tonight. Debbie, already.
13:46We all wanted to return to bedroom 28 where the family massacre had taken place.
13:51There was certainly an odd feel to this room and hopefully we would get to know
13:56what it was that was making us feel on edge. Since we've been away I most
14:01definitely feel, I don't know how everyone's feeling since you've come into the
14:05atmosphere, whether you've been sensing anything or what, but I feel as if we've
14:09had someone back in this room because my inclinations over here as if a spirit
14:16person has actually been in this area. So sad because it takes me back in memory of
14:23the conditions and the residual energy of this group of souls who were slain, were
14:30murdered, you know, the life force taken from them. Is there any way of you being
14:36able to tell us why they were murdered? This may sound silly but it was either
14:42import or export because it all had to do with the ships and something to do with
14:48grain. A trader. A grain trader. And he was the head of his family. Thank you Sam, that's
14:57better, thank you. Yes, I don't get his first name. Thank you. His first name is
15:04William. The money that this trader had was taken, was taken by this culprit. So the
15:18person that took the life of these this family unit was also in, I just got to
15:27classify him as another trader. It's like one was ready to purchase, but the other
15:36one didn't have the goods, but made out he did. And when he got the money, he slaughtered
15:42them in the sleep. What about... OK, sorry. Go on. No, it's OK, I just thought I felt something
15:49there to the side. What? Here? Yes, just to the back. I thought earlier, I got the impression
15:55somebody was looking over my shoulder earlier. Are you kidding? That's why I looked around.
15:58Yes, there's an energy there now. I thought it might have been me, but... That's a young
16:01lady. That's a young lady. She would be... Is she here? Yes. Just here, but did you see
16:08that print, that painting picture there? I was just going to say then, honestly, I saw a shadow
16:14there then. Yes, it moved over. Yes, it did. She moved. I saw that shadow move twice then,
16:19and that wasn't... None of the crew members have gone, and her shadows aren't going that far
16:22over. She started to develop her energy there, and she moved towards that painting as she moved
16:28over. She's still here, Derek? Her energy's still depicted there, yes. She's not shown a full
16:35spiritual, like, self, but her energy's there. I would take her to be... Where my hand
16:43is? Yes, just there. Do you see it going into the energy? Yes, the energy's still there. It's not
16:48separated, and she's there, and it's... I would say that she would be the age of maybe 12, 12 or 13.
16:58Um, very, very, very... There's a warm spot there, isn't there? Yeah. High cheekbones and very thin in the face.
17:05Very pale. There's a hot spot here. Does that sound really silly? No, we get hot and cold.
17:10Yes, yeah. Yes, hot spots are just as equally as important... Are they? Oh, yes, there it is.
17:17Now, I can feel that with my hands. So, she's not... Yeah, the energy's not moved, but she's finding...
17:21Does anybody want to come and feel this? Come and feel that, because there's a hot spot there.
17:25It's only ever so slightly, but you can... It's there, yes.

17:32You see, generally also, hot spots are not... When spirit entities, if they're not sour,
17:39they're not, you know, nasty, there are souls maybe that have had their lives taken from them
17:44being good souls, and they're not going to depict that chill.

20:29about the black shape that had leapt out at them.
20:32As we reached the top of the stairs, something odd had occurred.

21:52It did seem odd to find that lights were turning themselves on
21:55and doors were opening on their own
21:57when we were the only people in the hotel.
21:59Another room that we felt compelled to go into was room 16,
22:03where the ghost of a soldier has been seen staring at a sleeping occupant.
22:08Also, objects move on their own and strange noises have been heard.
22:12What can you feel in here?
22:14When I walked in, just to that wall there by the clock, but not close to the clock,
22:22all I saw was a shadow.
22:24The shadow was quite thick.
22:28It was just above there, and it was just solid, so to speak.
22:32A shadow.
22:33No form.
22:35No showing me, like, you know, facial or anything.
22:37Just dark between, like, the grey and the black colour.
22:41Now, that's very rare for me to experience that sort of thing.
22:45Well, what it is, is it's a spirit individual
22:49that has certainly, most definitely not learnt, OK,
22:53how to build up the energy to give, like, a descriptive, you know,
22:59for our features, our eyes to see features.
23:01Generally, that's an individual that has certainly not progressed
23:07and could be one of our two individuals, OK,
23:13that we've talked about, which we've picked up and linked up with.
23:17This shadow, when you walked in here and you saw this shadow on the wall.
23:19Quite wide, actually, which is unusual for a spirit entity.
23:23I know you used to pick out any features face-wise or anything,
23:27but are you able to sense whether that was perhaps male or female?
23:30It was masculine.

23:34A female, I've never yet, in the time I've been doing my work with spirits,
23:39I've never seen a form, so to speak, of that nature
23:45and then it to develop into a spirit lady or a spirit girl.

23:59No, there's not.

24:00If we had 60 active spirit entities in this building,
24:04we couldn't fail but to notice things in the atmosphere happening virtually all the time.

25:11seem to have lives of their own.

25:15can give a reason for these strange occurrences.
25:19For the rest of the investigation
25:21at the Schooner Hotel,
25:22we had decided to split into smaller groups
25:24to cover the building.
25:25I wanted to go back up to room 28.
25:28This was the room where a family massacre had taken place.
25:32With Derek, Phil, Carina and Tom with me,
25:34it didn't seem such a daunting prospect.

26:19When I was in here before, I was feeling really weird, and I was thinking I was seeing things.
26:25I was seeing flashes of light.
26:28But it was that sort of vision that you do get when you're in the dark and you don't
26:34know what's going, you know, and it was so hot.

26:40See, now, for me, it's gone quite warm again.

26:45It's almost like it's warming up, but then it could be because, you know, there are five

39:59We did venture back to the corridor with more tape, but unfortunately, whatever had been there had disappeared.
40:18Other investigations that took place during the night ran smoothly.
40:23Temperature changes were noted, along with strange noises, but the most intriguing evidence caught on tape were all these light anomalies.
40:31After many dust tests, we were interested to see all these different orbs.
40:35They were all caught in places that are known to have reported ghost sightings.
40:41During Phil's baseline tests, not one light anomaly was caught, so it does seem strange that during the early hours of the morning, these orbs showed up.
40:49Many people believe these light anomalies to be one of the first stages of a ghost manifestation.
40:55Until scientists can give us a definite answer, we will never be sure what they are.
41:06In my opinion, it's the closest I've come on these shoots to being very, very close to an entity.
41:16It was quite frightening up there.
41:19Without a doubt, this was an individual type of spirit that would categorise as being elemental.
41:26And these particular spirit entities have never actually come for a physical life to the airplane, nor have gained any sort of experience in a physical form.
41:37Overall, I was quite impressed with the investigation in general.
41:40We did a thorough investigation of the whole premises.
41:42The noises do seem to suggest, to me anyway, that there could be some kind of spiritual activity going on.
41:50Maybe not as much as 60 ghosts, but there is definitely something about this hotel.
41:54Well, the total psychic analysis of the investigation in this inn was that there was a mixture.
42:01A mixture of great sadness, where we did find persons, the whole family was actually slain.
42:08So many layers of, you know, residual energy.
42:13And overall, a fine investigation.
42:16I shall go away with fond, ghostly memories of the schooner.
42:20Electrical disturbances are actually fairly commonly reported when people report things like poltergeists.
42:30And it may well have some kind of paranormal explanation.
42:33But personally, I would say a simple fault with electricity could be far more plausible.
42:37And what we need to look at is the possible, any faults in the electricity supply to this particular hotel.
42:43So could there have been a power cut during this time, which would explain lights going on and off and also clocks being reset?
42:49And we have to rule out those possible explanations first before we can really be confident that something more unusual is happening.
42:55There's a hot spot here. Does that sound really silly?
42:58No, we get hot and cold.
43:00The hot spot in room 28 appears unusual because normally you would expect people to report cold spots when they're witnessing or experiencing ghostly phenomena.
43:08So this is unusual because a vet has, first of all, said an area that feels particularly hot.
43:13But it doesn't necessarily require a paranormal explanation.
43:16It could be explained in terms of warm pipes or something else.
43:19So it requires an extra leap of judgment to say there's something paranormal going on.

43:27I don't know. I just sense there was somebody else here.

43:31When the group are having the seance at the top of the stairs, things then eventually start happening and a few unusual events.
43:36So, for example, they're hearing unusual noises, which apparently have no normal explanation.
43:41And when they eventually go into the hotel room, it's very, very cold in there.
43:45So the whole group is very kind of excited, a little bit frightened, thinking maybe there's something unusual happening.
43:50Now, I think it must be remembered that in that situation, I think anybody would probably be a little bit frightened
43:54and would start to interpret any normal noises, any normal events as being very unusual.
43:59For example, even if I was there at that time in the morning in a supposedly haunted location,
44:04and even me being a so-called sceptic, even I would probably be a little bit frightened,
44:07simply because it's early in the morning and everyone's kind of gene to each other along.
44:12So I think it's only to be expected.
44:14And it felt threatening.
44:17Sixty ghosts? I don't think so.
44:19But one thing's for sure, there's definitely something strange going on at the Schooner Hotel.
