00:00Zico chose to fool the goalkeeper, side-foot it into the corner, and at the end of the day, we saw the result of that.
00:07I'm wondering, in retrospect, perhaps we might find out later from Terry, his Barcelona team, of course, were beaten on penalties,
00:14and I just wonder, his players seem to try to finesse the ball into the net rather than thump it.
00:20I think my view is now, having seen Barcelona and seen Zico, that when the nerves are fragile, give it a thump at all costs, John.
00:30You need somebody like Ray Stewart to take it, really, don't you?
00:33What's happened is that Junior has gone off, and Silas, the 20-year-old, is on.
00:40You're looking, obviously, at Platini, but Brazil have made their second substitution,
00:45and Silas is wearing number 20, which is appropriate since he's 20 years old,
00:51and he's come on for the older figure of Junior, who is off now in extra time.
00:58It's 15 minutes each way, and if necessary, penalty kicks,
01:02and what an extraordinary coincidence it would be if France were involved in another penalty competition
01:07after what happened in Seville, when we had the only one so far in the history of the World Cup, and they lost it.
01:15But there could be a lot of action to come before that possibility arises,
01:23and we have a free kick to France straight from the kick-off.
01:33Ferrari has gone on to the edge of the penalty area with Stoppy Ra, Platini will take it,
01:38Rojto is there as well, but now it's being left
01:42for Tussauds, Platini decides he'll go and join the Thron in the penalty area.
01:54This is Silas.
01:58Fresh pair of legs.
02:01Zico.
02:04Alenau.
02:06Josemar.
02:07Correca's in the middle, Socrates.
02:12Socrates arguing with Josemar about the pass.
02:15Here's Rojto.
02:18And the inevitable figure of Julio Cesar, who never seems to get bypassed.
02:24Alenau.
02:28Silas.
02:30Zico.
02:30Alenau.
02:42Alenau.
02:44Socrates.
02:46Alenau.
02:49Good defending by France.
02:50Again, Jean-Tigana back there in the heart of the back four, just to bring the ball away.
02:58Rojto.
02:58And that was a foul by Sulas.
03:03Great compliment to the players and to the referee.
03:06We haven't seen the yellow card in this match.
03:10Everybody's been concentrating on playing football, which is what we've come to expect
03:16as soon as we knew these two fine sides were going to be in opposition in this quarterfinal.
03:23Fernandez.
03:25Tussauds.
03:26The rebound favours Zico.
03:32The rebound favours Zico.
03:37Alenau.
03:43Elzo.
03:46Silas.
03:48Alenau.
03:48Silas again.
03:57Slow build-up.
03:58Socrates and Careca are waiting in the penalty area.
04:04Josimar.
04:06Brazil just decide to try and come out and go the other way.
04:09Edinho.
04:09And they switch it again.
04:14Josimar.
04:17Silas.
04:22Elzo.
04:23Silas.
04:24Disappointing pull-back.
04:29Elzo was waiting in front.
04:30Might capitalise on this.
04:32It's Platini looking for Stopi Ra.
04:34But they won't.
04:36Silas held his hand up and acknowledged.
04:39That was a poor final ball after Brazil had spent a lot of time probing for that opening.
04:43Very carefully.
04:48Here's Silas again.
04:51Elzo.
04:51Another bad pass by Silas.
04:56The youngsters have not made a confident start.
05:00This is Amoros.
05:01He can just come on.
05:02Silas.
05:04Bossis.
05:06Four minutes gone in extra time.
05:09And this is developing into one of the great World Cup marathons.
05:14Prize at stake, remember.
05:15A place in the semi-final here against Mexico or West Germany.
05:18Brazil certainly had the opportunities to win it in the last quarter of an hour of normal time.
05:24But didn't take them.
05:26And that's in goal as a hero.
05:28Here's Ferrari.
05:29Rocheteau.
05:31For France.
05:32Dominique Rocheteau.
05:33He's gone all the way.
05:35Stop to Stopi Ra.
05:38That would have been one of the great goals of the World Cup.
05:42Dominique Rocheteau went clean through the defence.
05:45And Stopi Ra in the picture there couldn't bury the rebound.
05:48An absolutely scintillating run by Rocheteau.
05:53But a fine piece of defending at the last there.
05:56And I'm not too sure that wasn't Julio Cesar again who actually fell in front of Rocheteau.
06:02Branco actually got the ball away.
06:05Now there's an injury behind the goal just to your left.
06:08But Brazila down to ten men as Ferrari takes the corner.
06:14Stopi Ra's there again.
06:15In fact Stopi Ra and Rocheteau who Terry and Laurie weren't all that keen on on their first half display have utilised the extra space quite well in the second half.
06:30And almost pulled off the goal they're looking for.
06:35Stopi Ra, a very determined player.
06:37Very forceful.
06:38Not that much experience at this level.
06:40But a very promising young man.
06:43Still plenty of energy left.
06:44And love scoring goals.
06:45Julio Cesar is back on the pitch after a tension.
06:51And Brazila on the attack.
06:54After a heart-stopping moment at their end.
06:56This is Socrates.
06:58And now it's Alamal.
06:59Fernandes has done some good defending for France.
07:10Here's Josimar.
07:12Careca on the far side of the penalty area waiting for a cross.
07:15He's still there.
07:16This is Alamal.
07:19And Careca was behind the last defender.
07:22Who was the imperturbable figure of Bossis.
07:25Who's also had an excellent game at number six for France.
07:29Wherever you look on this pitch.
07:30There's an international player of high quality.
07:32Performing at the top of his game.
07:37It's a quite wonderful experience to be here to see it.
07:44And Platini.
07:46Who may still have a say in what's going to happen next.
07:55Tegana.
07:59Fernandes.
08:02Tussauds.
08:06Appeals for offside.
08:07It wasn't given.
08:08And Edinho just tucked it back to Carlos.
08:13Seven minutes gone in extra time.
08:15France one.
08:15Brazil one.
08:16Zico for Brazil.
08:20Elza.
08:20On this side, Josimar.
08:28He's running into trouble.
08:30And again it's Tegana.
08:32But this time his pass goes to Alamal.
08:37Zico.
08:40Zico.
08:41Couldn't get it to Careca.
08:42Silas.
08:44And the French are defending well.
08:46We've got to give them some credit here.
08:47On the counter attack it's Platini.
08:49And my word it's Rosto.
08:51Stopirat is in the centre and Platini is joining him there.
08:54That was Stopirat.
09:00Ferreri.
09:02Platini.
09:03Couldn't get the shot in.
09:07And Brazil.
09:09You get the feeling there's so many gaps in midfield now when an attack breaks down.
09:12You get the feeling that somebody's going to have an extra man on the counter.
09:15And perhaps put one away to settle it.
09:17This is Zico to Silas.
09:19Here's Alamal.
09:37Elza.
09:39Elza, number 19.
09:40It's still puzzling me how the Brazilians, there's the chance, over the top,
09:52as we've seen so many shots go in this World Cup competition.
09:56But it's still puzzling me how Socrates is still on the field.
10:01Too late now.
10:02They've used their two substitutes.
10:04He looks very short physically.
10:08There's no question about that.
10:09And at this stage of the game, running power is as important as anything else.
10:14The Brazilians don't seem to make the most of the talent that they have at their disposal.
10:19And perhaps for the rest of the world's sake, that's quite a good thing.
10:23Well, two items of information if you're expecting to see the news.
10:26It has been delayed until 9.30, which I think you'll find understandable.
10:30The news from here is that Bruno Bellon came on in that interruption, number 16.
10:36And he replaced Dominique Rochto for France.
10:38So all four subs have now been used.
10:42And again, we see the World Cup as a 13-man game, deep into extra time.
10:47Here's Fernandes.
10:49France have got Bellon here, fresh up front.
10:53Tigana.
10:53Ferrari, the other sub.
10:59Bellon, stopping right far post.
11:03Still Bellon.
11:05Play on, says the Romanian referee.
11:07Won't become this referee.
11:11Doing himself no harm at all.
11:13Here's Elzo.
11:19And now it's Zico.
11:21And now Silas.
11:27Elzo again.
11:28Silas.
11:34Socrates.
11:35Oh, he looks so casual at times.
11:37And the play switches obviously.
11:39With so many tired legs on the pitch now.
11:45One mistake, as we saw in that amazing semi-final in Mexico 16 years ago, could be so costly.
11:52That was the 4-3 game between Italy and Germany.
11:55Possis.
11:57The longs in the middle.
12:03And of course, extra time the other day between the Soviet Union and Belgium.
12:07So, these marathon matches really testing the endurance.
12:11Silas.
12:13Socrates.
12:15Lovely turn, but running again into difficulties.
12:21Looking rather laboured.
12:2211 minutes gone in extra time.
12:26Brazil 1, France 1.
12:28In Guadalajara.
12:29In the quarterfinals of the World Cup.
12:32Batistón.
12:35Outside him, stop Iran.
12:39Batistón.
12:41Shoots against the legs of the defender.
12:45And here's Silas.
12:48And now Elzo.
12:52And Kareka.
12:57And Zika.
13:04Silas.
13:06Kareka.
13:10Silas.
13:11That's the fresh young man there.
13:17Silas.
13:19And having fresh legs at this point in the game does give you the opportunity to make history and glory for yourself and your family by scoring a goal at the end of one of the finest matches that we've seen in the World Cup.
13:33The fresh players, I think, are the ones who might turn it.
13:36Silas could be started nervously, but as you see there is warming up.
13:40And maybe up the other end, Belong, or even Ferreria, might do the trick.
13:46Well, unless somebody does the trick, we shall go into the nail-biting sequence of penalties.
13:52This is Socrates to Alamau.
13:55Zika is up with this attack and so is Kareka on the far side.
14:00Alamau to Silas.
14:03Trying to force it through to Zika.
14:07And Silas goes again.
14:08And Alamau.
14:13And he floats it on the roof of the net when there are three players appealing for a cross.
14:31Two minutes left in the first period of extra time.
14:33And the French who went through that heartbreak four years ago of the extra time and penalties against West Germany and came out on the wrong end.
14:44Just wonder whether psychologically there are seven survivors in the team.
14:47I just wonder if it's come through their minds.
14:49But this is Platini.
14:54Zika.
14:58Silas.
15:00Alamau.
15:03Josimar.
15:13Silas.
15:15Oh, Socrates!
15:17And he headed it straight at the goalkeeper.
15:20But he's got it back on the far side as Branco.
15:23And he's beaten Amoros.
15:24And he couldn't get it to Socrates in the middle.
15:27Two chances there for Brazil.
15:29The header by Socrates, straight at bats.
15:32The cross by Branco.
15:33Also intercepted.
15:36And we go into the last minute of the first period of extra time.
15:40And still Brazil can't crack it.
15:42Not even with 60,000 or so, most of whom seem to be supporting them.
15:49The end of the first period of extra time.
15:57This calm Romanian referee says, let's change round straight away.
16:03Coach is not allowed on at this stage, technically.
16:06But Jimmy Hill, where's your money now?
16:08Well, where is my money at this stage?
16:13It could be on either side.
16:15Because of the weather, because of the heat, I still would go for the Brazilians.
16:20Socrates, we've talked about him, and to be fair to him, he's always adjusting his position.
16:25That's one of the things that I think the Brazilians are loathe to take him off for.
16:29Because even in getting in that header, although he wasn't moving quickly, he was adjusting his position a few yards this way, a few yards that way, pulling defenders all the time and making openings for other people.
16:41The final chance came to him, and there just didn't seem to be the physical strength there to put it away.
16:48But I just wonder if it does get the penalties.
16:51I love a word from Terry Venables on whether now he's in favour of the blaster as against the finesse.
16:58Because it will be a fascinating, a dramatic, eventual contest which will decide which of these teams take the aeroplane home.
17:07Well, we get this drama earlier in the competition now, because FIFA decided to do away with the second round league system and make it sudden death from the last 16.
17:18And what a good thing they did, because it gives the World Cup an element of uncertainty and high drama when you know that one of these classy sides, one of these superb footballing countries,
17:34has got to go out here today in the next 15 minutes or in a penalty competition.
17:39Zico to Silas.
17:45Fernandes to Platini.
17:46Bellon is running on up front now for France.
17:49Here's the other sub, Ferrari.
17:53Amoros.
17:58Amoros to the line.
17:59Ball wasn't out.
18:03The cross was a bit long.
18:04Back heel there by Alamau was a bit casual.
18:08Bellon was in quickly.
18:13You can't change the natural habits of the Brazilians.
18:16A very risky thing to do, that back heel at that stage.
18:19But they're brought up that way.
18:21And at this stage of any game, they can't stop.
18:23Bellon's cross headed out by Julio César.
18:26Now Tegana.
18:28And Amoros.
18:34Ferrari.
18:40And he's got a corner as Ferrari.
18:51Bellon.
18:51Bellon's cross.
18:55And it's not going to find anybody there.
19:06Tussauds tangling with Alamau.
19:08And players will start to go down now.
19:11Not just in pain after a tackle, but I would imagine...
19:14Tussauds is the player there who's hurt.
19:19But I would imagine that tiredness is going to invade even the strongest morale here.
19:27That looks like cramp, and it's not surprising, I suppose, at this stage.
19:38Losing salt in this heat is normal, even for those who spend their time off the field,
19:44let alone running up and down for nearly two hours at this temperature and at this altitude.
19:50At the end of the day, it's courage and physical condition that will turn a contest like this as much as brilliant ability.
20:02It's a combination of so many things, which is the fascination of a game of football.
20:07Fernandes for France.
20:14Here's Amoros.
20:18Foul by Silas.
20:25Stopi Ra, Platini and Bellon waiting for the diagonal free-kick here.
20:35Bossis has gone forward to join them.
20:37Stopi Ra coming in first, just getting a touch to it.
20:51France do have, in their side, five of the men, or in their squad today,
20:56five of the men that took penalties in Seville,
20:58but Dures has gone off, so he wouldn't be allowed to take one.
21:01Platini and Roshto's gone off too.
21:04Here's Kareka.
21:05And the man who wouldn't want to take one is Bossis,
21:09who missed a crucial one in that shootout against the Germans.
21:12Here's Socrates.
21:23Josimar.
21:28Three waiting in the centre here for a cross from Josimar.
21:31He's pulled it back to Alamau.
21:33And he's found Branco.
21:40Socrates comes to try and collect it, but fails.
21:43This is Tussauds to Platini.
21:53Bellon is over on the left wing.
21:55Tussauds finds him.
21:56Bossis has made a run from the back, also down that side, number six.
21:59Linesman is flagging.
22:12Well, five minutes gone in the second period of extra time,
22:16so ten minutes away from a penalty competition between Brazil and France.
22:21Locked at 1-1 since four minutes before the first half of normal time
22:28when Platini equalised the earlier goal by Kareka,
22:33but so much has happened since.
22:34That seems like yesterday.
22:36This is Josimar.
22:39Zico.
22:39Silas.
22:50Kareka.
22:52Branco.
22:54The ball hit his hand.
22:55It wasn't deliberate.
22:57Amoros.
23:00That's a good ball by Amoros.
23:01And stoppy wires away.
23:03Julio Cesar with him.
23:05Belongs in the middle if they can find him.
23:07Ferrari.
23:09Stoppy rock and he saved it.
23:13And cleared, thankfully, by Edinho.
23:17Amoros is injured.
23:18He got clattered as he played that brilliant through ball.
23:21He's lying on the ground, nursing his right leg.
23:24And the referee has noticed that.
23:26But that was a swift attack by France.
23:31And there was definitely a moment when, if the cross could have come in,
23:35they had a man over beyond the last defender.
23:39Edinho has complained to the referee that they're allowing Amoros too much time on the pitch for treatment.
23:52And so they should, really, because it was a Brazilian.
23:59I think it was Alameo there who actually pushed him to the ground.
24:02He was so frustrated he'd lost the ball.
24:05After it was played through, he actually shoved him to the ground off the ball, which is when he got injured.
24:12So, on that score, he's entitled to have the time in which to get back into the game.
24:17Brilliant through ball it was at the end of the day too.
24:19So, we resume with a French corner.
24:26Ferreri standing on the penalty spot.
24:29Fernandes has joined him now.
24:30It's too high for Stoppy Ra.
24:32This is Tigana.
24:35Platini.
24:38Fernandes.
24:39Stoppy Ra.
24:40Offside.
24:41Offside.
24:42There was some argument about that, but there was so much noise in the ground, I don't think anybody heard the whistle.
24:54Here's Silas for Brazil.
25:00Elzo.
25:01Beautifully done.
25:01That's a smashing run by Elzo, deep into extra time.
25:08Socrates.
25:11Silas, no.
25:12No, not even the second time as it ricocheted back off him from Bossis.
25:19Well, Batts has saved one penalty.
25:21He may be asked to face at least five more.
25:25This is Tigana.
25:29Gets it back from Ferreri.
25:31Belong trying to get the cross in, but Alamal comes away from Brazil.
25:47Careca's the only player forward at the moment.
25:49Square is Zico.
25:52Socrates in the inside right position.
25:55Zico.
25:56Careca.
25:57Zico.
25:59And it won't run for Brazil.
26:00France still defending well in groups.
26:03They've really clustered around the ball and shut out the angles.
26:08Seven minutes left.
26:12Batistón.
26:13Platini is in there too.
26:14Battling it out with Josimar.
26:22They're both acting as if they're hurt there.
26:24Platini because he thought he should have had a free kick.
26:26And Josimar is rolling on the ground.
26:33I give the verdict in favour of Josimar there.
26:36No question about it.
26:37He was playing the ball.
26:38He was attacked twice from behind.
26:46Zico for Brazil.
26:48Alamal.
26:49Silas.
26:57Elzo.
26:59Elzo.
27:01Careca, no.
27:03Branco, no.
27:04Good defending by the French.
27:09The back four have played brilliantly at times in front of a goalkeeper who's already made his name in this match.
27:15That was Bossis who finally won the tackle and brought the ball away.
27:18Still, most of the play with Brazil.
27:23But can they find a way through?
27:25Zico.
27:27Alamal.
27:30Alamal.
27:31Good save again by Joel Batist.
27:33Covered his near post brilliantly.
27:36Corner to Brazil.
27:37Players on the ground now.
27:39Feeling the effects of this marathon.
27:41Adinho is waiting in the centre.
27:43So is Zico here.
27:45And Batist does enough again.
27:46Alamal still on the ground on the far side of the penalty area for Brazil.
27:51Front's great with Platini.
27:53Oh, he's out straight.
27:54It's Colón.
27:56They're doing the pass.
27:57Good over there.
27:58Oh, goodness me.
28:00Colón is his family.
28:02And the referee's saying, play on.
28:06That's extraordinary.
28:09And Brazil are on the attack with Silas.
28:11And Careca.
28:16And still Careca.
28:18And he's gone past Batist on.
28:20And Socrates has missed an open goal.
28:23I can't believe this.
28:28Socrates never looked like getting in position to put that in the net.
28:32It only needed a side foot.
28:33But look at him.
28:34A tired man falling over before the ball came.
28:36But we have seen here one of the most dramatic incidents in the whole history of the World Cup.
28:43Proving that the referee has made, I will feel, an extreme mistake.
28:49It proves also that the laws of the game are not sufficient to cover for this incident.
28:55Because that is a goal for France.
28:58Or should be at least a penalty.
28:59Because it took place outside the area, the referee couldn't give a penalty.
29:03But who would believe he would give nothing?
29:06And who would believe that the goalkeeper wouldn't get the yellow card?
29:10Or even the red one.
29:12I mean, that's, as you said, France were in the semi-finals there for a split second.
29:18Here's Boulogne.
29:20The man who was involved.
29:24It was a lovely ball by Platini that put him through.
29:27And he was onside.
29:30Bossis for France.
29:32Can they do it this time?
29:33Still Bossis.
29:37Well, Carlos, the goalkeeper, must be the luckiest man in football at this moment.
29:42And the French, the most disappointed.
29:45And the unluckiest, the referee, because he's spoiled there in an incident that will be talked about throughout the world.
29:52His better performance throughout that game.
29:55Yes, it ranks with the decision in the first match here when the referee from Australia disallowed the goal by Michel.
30:02Brazil were lucky on that occasion and they're even luckier here today.
30:05Two and a half minutes left in extra time.
30:11It's going to go to penalties, I think.
30:14But France haven't finished yet.
30:16Boulogne.
30:16Edinho, free kick.
30:17Edinho, free kick.
30:22Pushing between Boulogne and Elzo.
30:25A little bit of reaction.
30:26France throwing everybody forward now.
30:36Ferreri is in there.
30:38Fernandez is behind him.
30:40Bossis has gone up.
30:41Ferreri is the man nearest the kicker.
30:57Fernandez is in there.
31:01Bossis also.
31:02Boulogne.
31:11And Bossis up at the back.
31:16Stoppy Ra.
31:19And Platini.
31:21And Stoppy Ra.
31:23And Platini.
31:25What a brilliant fight back for the ball.
31:27Can France do it even yet?
31:28Fernandez.
31:31And looking back on that incident, we have to remember Seville four years ago
31:35when a Frenchman, Battiston, was cruelly smashed to the ground by Schumacher.
31:39One of the worst incidents in the history of the World Cup.
31:43And was carried off.
31:44And France didn't get their just desserts that night.
31:46And they haven't got them here today with Delon either.
31:49Wasn't such a cruel challenge this time by the goalkeeper.
31:52But it was certainly a foul.
31:54And again, nothing was given.
32:01Josimar.
32:03Silas.
32:05And the referee has brought extra time to a close.
32:08Can he give Brazil the start they need here in this penalty competition?
32:16They each take five, remember.
32:18And if they can't settle it in that sequence, then it's sudden death.
32:25So, it's Socrates against bats.
32:29And he saves.
32:37And he saves.
32:42Well.
32:45Socrates.
32:46The two-step run-up.
32:48And what a good save by Joel Batts,
32:50who has now saved a penalty from Zico and one from Socrates.
32:54What a talismanic performance by the French goalkeeper.
33:00And he put the penalty to his right and he saved it with his left hand.
33:04A remarkable save.
33:06Not such a bad penalty, but a really brilliant save by Batts.
33:09And it's turning on the goalkeepers.
33:12Well, you did say he was a left-hander, so he's proved his point.
33:16Stoppy Ra has gone forward for France.
33:18And France are in the lead.
33:25He blasted it.
33:32They've each had one penalty.
33:34And France lead Brazil 1-0.
33:36That was the thumping technique right in the roof of the net.
33:46Well, who would be in the shoes of these players now?
33:49Their position in the World Cup, Brazil and France,
33:52hinging on this penalty sequence.
33:55You can see there the penalty spot.
33:59They try to place it round the edge
34:01because the grass has been flattened a little bit,
34:03as it always is a penalty spot,
34:06from the paint.
34:08Alan Al.
34:12And he scores.
34:13So it's 1-1,
34:16but France have a kick in hand.
34:22That was a good penalty, actually.
34:24Right in the corner with power.
34:36He didn't get a shot there.
34:38The referee was actually pressing the ball down into the spot
34:40with his foot there,
34:41which probably shows he's never been a player
34:44certainly of any calibre in his life
34:46and had to take the penalty
34:48rather than stand and watch.
34:50Amoros, who's scored in Seville.
35:00Yes.
35:03Two runs of France
35:04with two penalties each taken.
35:06Good effort by Carlos there,
35:13but he won't have too many sympathizers
35:15among the neutrals now.
35:18And it is going to be Zico.
35:22Well,
35:23the private duel between
35:24Zico and Vax has resumed.
35:28Yes, this time he's got it.
35:33It's 2-2,
35:37but France have a kick in hand.
35:44Zico making up for his earlier miss.
35:47And it looks like Bruno Bellon next.
36:01France, remember,
36:02are technically one ahead,
36:04but he's got to
36:05put this in the net
36:06to keep them there.
36:08And the Brazilian fans
36:09trying to put him off.
36:10Well,
36:18hit the post,
36:19hit the keeper
36:19and went in.
36:23Now,
36:24does that count or not?
36:26I would thought it does,
36:28because it's rather like
36:28hitting the post
36:29and going in,
36:30in a sense.
36:32I think it has to count,
36:34Jimmy.
36:34Well,
36:37my view is that
36:38the ball should go in
36:39straight away and directly.
36:41And if there is a miss,
36:42then it is a miss.
36:43But it happened so quickly
36:44and happened on the far side
36:46of the keeper
36:47that I'm absolutely sure
36:49that the referee
36:49has allowed it.
36:50I think he has.
36:51Adinho went to protest
36:52and he waved him away.
36:54Could he be making
36:54the second blunder
36:55of this game?
36:56Well,
36:56I don't know,
36:57because it's not as if
36:58this player had took the kick
36:59out of the second shot
36:59from a rebound or anything.
37:01I mean,
37:01he only had the one strike
37:02and the ball did finish
37:03in the net.
37:05Have you ever seen
37:06some drama?
37:07I've never experienced
37:08anything like it.
37:09It's 3-2 to France.
37:10They've each had
37:11three penalties.
37:16Now,
37:17who's this?
37:20Branco.
37:23If he was to miss this,
37:25Brazil are in really
37:26serious trouble.
37:28They're 3-2 down,
37:30remember?
37:32See,
37:33he's arguing with the
37:34referee there,
37:35John,
37:35I can see it.
37:36The referee's saying
37:36it's got to be on the spot,
37:38but the centre of the spot
37:39is worn and becoming
37:40increasingly worn,
37:41and you risk actually
37:42stubbing the ball
37:43if it's sitting too low.
37:44It's Branco.
37:45It's 3-3,
37:53but France
37:54has all the kick in hand.
37:59And I suppose
38:01this is the moment
38:01really for
38:02Michel Platini,
38:03who's walking forward
38:05to take responsibility
38:07and try and put
38:09France
38:094-3 up
38:11in the penalty
38:12competition.
38:12What a birthday
38:21Platini is having
38:22today.
38:23one of the world's
38:44great players
38:45misses what could be
38:46a crucial kick.
38:47Now then,
38:51let's get this
38:52right.
38:52It's 3-0
38:53after four penalties
38:55each.
38:56It's absolutely
38:57level,
38:58and it's effectively
38:59really now
39:00is sudden death.
39:01and here's Julio César.
39:07Extraordinary.
39:08The nerve
39:08of one of the
39:09greatest players
39:10in the world
39:10failed him
39:11at the vital moment.
39:14It happened
39:15to Willie Hearnes
39:15many years ago
39:16that at the end
39:17of a European
39:17Championship final
39:18lost his nerve
39:19and skied it.
39:21Julio César
39:22for Brazil.
39:25Yeah!
39:25Now,
39:31if France
39:32score for the
39:33next penalty
39:33they've won.
39:36If France
39:37can put the
39:38last one away
39:39it will be
39:40the last one
39:41because that
39:42will give them
39:42victory 4-3
39:43now
39:44and it's going
39:45to be Luis
39:45Fernandes.
39:47What a
39:47responsibility.
39:50I'd rather be
39:51taking it to win
39:52than to equalise.
39:53great stop
39:56by Bats
39:56again.
39:57It's just
39:57it's going
39:57to be done
39:58after all
39:58because if
40:00this shot
40:00goes past
40:01Carlos
40:01into the net
40:02then France
40:04are through
40:04to the
40:04semi-finals
40:05and Carlos
40:07will have
40:07been punished
40:08for that
40:08cynical foul
40:09in the closing
40:10stages of
40:11extra time.
40:14The football
40:15world holds
40:15its breath.
40:23I was going
40:25to see the
40:26wheel turn
40:26full circle
40:27after Seville.
40:29We are
40:30trying to win
40:33France
40:35and in the
40:36semi-finals
40:374-3 on penalties
40:39Fernandes
40:41what a great
40:42moment for the
40:43European champions
40:44and who would
40:45say they don't
40:46deserve it
40:47and in the most
40:48tense and
40:50dramatic
40:50circumstances
40:51in Guadalajara
40:52Brazil are
40:54out of the
40:54World Cup
40:55and thank
40:57goodness
40:58that in the
41:00end
41:00some higher
41:02authority
41:02dispensed
41:04the justice
41:05which the
41:05French deserve
41:06and which the
41:07Brazilians
41:07without any
41:08doubt
41:09did not.
41:09So after the
41:13heartbreak of
41:13Spain when
41:14France went out
41:15to West
41:17Germany on
41:17penalties when
41:18their goalkeeper
41:19was cynical
41:19today they've
41:21got their
41:22just desserts
41:22after the
41:23professional foul
41:25as it will be
41:25called although
41:26it isn't
41:26professional really
41:27by the goalkeeper
41:28that left France
41:29without a winning
41:30goal in extra
41:31time.
41:32They won the
41:32penalty competition
41:33by four successful
41:35kicks to three
41:36and the hero
41:37really when it
41:38all dies down
41:39is Joel
41:40Bax the
41:40goalkeeper
41:41because he
41:42saved a penalty
41:42in normal time
41:43and then produced
41:45two more in the
41:46penalty competition
41:47but that man
41:48there Fernandez
41:49he kept his
41:50nerve when it
41:51mattered and
41:52there's been so
41:53much excitement
41:53here in Guadalajara
41:54I'm sure those
41:56of you at home
41:56who've shared it
41:57will understand
41:58that the news
42:00and weather
42:00has been delayed
42:01but what has
42:02now not been
42:03delayed is
42:04France's progress
42:05into the
42:05semi-finals
42:06of the World Cup
42:07they will play
42:08either Mexico
42:09or West Germany
42:10and the
42:11favourites
42:11Brazil
42:12are out
42:13of the
42:13competition
42:14on the
42:15wrong end
42:16of the
42:16final score
42:17in Guadalajara
42:18for the
42:18first time
42:19France go
42:20in Guadalajara
