00:01A local rebel group says more than 200 foreign nationals rescued from scam centers in eastern
00:06Myanmar are still stuck near the border with Thailand. For years, criminal groups have
00:10trafficked hundreds of thousands of people to scam sites in Southeast Asia, including
00:14near the Thai-Myanmar border, where victims are forced to work in illegal online scams.
00:20Karen National Army, a rebel group that claims to have repatriated more than 8,000 foreign
00:25nationals after rescuing them from scam centers, says it was currently housing 216 people,
00:31including citizens of Vietnam, China, the Philippines, and Indonesia.
00:35Since February, Thailand has cut off electricity, internet, and fuel to five Myanmar border areas
00:41to stop scam centers. Thailand's Prime Minister Petong Thanh Shinawath says their government
00:46also plans to cut electricity to illegal sites in Cambodia as ties between the two countries
00:51worsen.
