00:00Johnny Depp says he was a crash test dummy for the Me Too movement during his highly publicized
00:05divorce and trial with ex-wife Amber Heard. Heard's domestic violence allegations against
00:11ex-husband Depp in 2016 led to two highly publicized trials. In 2018, Depp filed a libel
00:18lawsuit against The Sun after the British tabloid magazine called him a quote wife beater. The actor
00:24lost the case as the court ruled in the 2020 trial that The Sun's characterization was
00:29substantially true. In 2019, Depp also sued Heard for defamation over an op-ed she wrote in the
00:36Washington Post in which she called herself quote a figure representing domestic abuse. Following the
00:41live televised 2022 trial, a jury ultimately found Heard liable on all three counts of defamation.
00:48Heard also won one of the three claims in her countersuit. In his new interview, Depp opened up
00:52about why he took Heard to court. I knew I'd have to semi-eviscerate myself. Everyone was saying it'll
00:58go away but I can't trust that. What will go away? The fiction pawned around the f***ing globe? No it
01:03won't. If I don't try to represent the truth, it will be like I've actually committed the acts I'm
01:07accused of and my kids will have to live with it. In the wake of the trials, Warner Brothers asked the
01:12star to exit the Fantastic Beasts franchise and Depp has also said he won't return to the Pirates
01:17franchise as Disney reportedly parted ways with the actor. Depp admitted it hurt seeing these fake
01:22motherf***ers who lie to you, celebrate you, say all sorts of horror behind your back, yet keep the
01:27money. He continued, I was pre-Me Too. I was like a crash test dummy for Me Too. It was before Harvey
01:33Weinstein. For more on this story, head to THR.com. And for the latest entertainment news and updates,
