Get a COFFEE PERCOLATOR here: https://amzn.to/3WdOvJa
Most of us just use instant coffee or a coffee machine if we have one, because these methods are just so fast and convenient. But last night I finally discovered the deliciousness of PERCOLATED COFFEE. First thing's first: I had to learn to percolate coffee. I think I did a pretty good job. So in this video, I try to duplicate that process but... it doesn't quite come out the same. What's wrong? Watch this video to find out.

00:00Have you ever heard the word percolate used when people talk about coffee?
00:05What is it? Can you percolate coffee?
00:08Well, for years I had absolutely no idea.
00:11But I did stumble upon this Coleman 9 cup aluminum coffee percolator.
00:18And I thought, hey, I like shiny things, shiny metal things, I'm gonna buy it.
00:24And I bought it and I put it in storage and there it remained for a long, long time unused.
00:31That is until last night when I decided, tonight is the night I'm gonna percolate some coffee.
00:38So how does this thing work?
00:40Well, you have your thing, which you might think, ah yes, nice.
00:45You just make it full of water, put it over the flames, let it boil and there's boiled water.
00:52Why would you want to percolate coffee when you can just pour boiling water in a cup and add instant coffee powder and stir and there's your coffee.
01:02Yes, that's what I also thought.
01:04But no, this thing, well it actually has this little thing at the top, glass dome thingy.
01:12So what is the purpose of that, you might wonder.
01:15Well, if you look inside, you'll also see it's not just some, oh, now I'm taking this off.
01:22I'm trying to take off the entire lid.
01:24Yeah.
01:25So if you take off the lid, you'll see that inside it has some mechanics and stuff.
01:34You see this thing.
01:36What is this and what does it do?
01:39Well, what you do is, first you'll pour some coffee into this basket.
01:45I've heard you can also use coffee beans.
01:48I'm gonna use some ground coffee now.
01:51It is not quite the same as instant coffee, though it may look it.
01:57It's much rougher.
02:00Put that in there.
02:02Oh, now it's making a mess.
02:04But yeah, apparently you can also just pour coffee beans in there.
02:09And then you close the basket.
02:12And now you're gonna put this inside the device.
02:17I'll just call it a device for now.
02:20And you'll see this bottom also has little holes.
02:23Now it's full of coffee powder.
02:25Well, not coffee powder.
02:27Coffee.
02:28Ground coffee.
02:29See little holes?
02:30So it's gonna sit in there.
02:32And for some reason, when the water boils, it's gonna go up into this little pipe.
02:37You see it goes in there.
02:39Travels up the pipe.
02:40Comes out here.
02:42Into this little dome.
02:44Where you can see it.
02:46And of course it's gonna drip down again.
02:49Fall down again into this basket.
02:51Over your coffee or coffee beans or ground coffee.
02:56And then come out again on the sides and here at the bottom.
02:59It's gonna drip down.
03:00And then it will probably just repeat.
03:03Go up here again.
03:04And you'll be able to see there in the little glass dome.
03:08You'll be able to see when it gets a nice brown color.
03:12I suppose that's the purpose of this dome.
03:15Other than letting the things drip down.
03:18So let's do that.
03:19Why don't we?
03:20First we'll pour water into the device.
03:24I'm just used to calling things devices.
03:27And then add our coffee.
03:29We already poured the coffee in there.
03:32Close it.
03:34Start the flames under it.
03:36And now we should be able to see when it starts percolating.
03:40I bet I used that term right.
03:43So now we'll wait for the water to get hot.
03:45I suppose it needs to start boiling.
03:47Then it will start showing there.
03:50And while we're waiting for that to start.
03:53Let's see what else is there on here.
03:55Lightweight and durable.
03:57Won't rust cleans easily.
03:59Side bale handle for easy safe pouring.
04:01Yes that we saw.
04:03Instructions.
04:04Before using for first time.
04:05Wash the percolator and basket in hot soapy water.
04:08Rinse and dry thoroughly.
04:10Okay we didn't do that.
04:12To prevent flames from smudging the exterior.
04:15Rub the outside of the percolator with bar soap.
04:17When you rinse off the percolator after use.
04:20Oh it seems it's starting now.
04:22The smudge will wash away.
04:24Yeah I didn't do that.
04:26Alright it sounds like things are starting now.
04:29The water is boiling.
04:30But I don't see any coffee yet there in the little glass dome thingy.
04:36Maybe I should turn the heat down a bit.
04:39Does it say anything about how much heat and what not?
04:42Place on heat source for brewing.
04:45I don't know if the heat source is supposed to be boiling it all the time.
04:50Or if it's supposed to be slow brewing.
04:53Is it supposed to boil violently or must this be a slow thing?
04:57I don't know.
04:58Yesterday I first saw hot water like making drops and spewing drops in there.
05:05And then later brown coffee there.
05:07But today I don't see any of that.
05:10I wonder if it just works with steam condensing or condensating off of that little dome.
05:16And then running out, running down again into the little basket.
05:20Yeah, today I'm a little confused about this thing.
05:23Another big difference from making coffee this way and just using instant coffee is with this one.
05:30You get that nice coffee aroma in the air.
05:34Yeah, that's really nice.
05:36Okay, well, I thought it was supposed to make coffee there.
05:39Visible coffee in that little dome thingy.
05:42But apparently that's not going to happen today.
05:44So I wonder if the coffee is ready.
05:46Let's pour out a little bit of it.
05:48And we'll see the color.
05:50Yeesh, this thing is now hot.
05:54Let's check the color of this coffee.
06:00Great.
06:01No, that's just water.
06:03What went wrong here today?
06:05Yeah, no, that's just water.
06:09Let's just pour that back.
06:11Yeah, no, that's just colorless water still.
06:16You see, not a coffee brew yet.
06:18But maybe there's not enough water in here.
06:20I think so.
06:24Okay, I've put in a lot more water now.
06:28I wondered if we needed more coffee.
06:30But I don't think so.
06:32The coffee seems to be just right.
06:34So let's put that lid on there.
06:36And we close the percolator.
06:38And let's just start again.
06:40Yeah, I think maybe we should just...
06:43We didn't have enough water, but also I don't think we let it run for long enough.
06:48But with that little bit of water, if we just let it keep running,
06:53it would probably have boiled dry.
06:56So I see the first marking here is for five cups of coffee.
07:00It seems that's a minimum you can make with this.
07:02Yeah, it seems you cannot just brew one cup or you're gonna boil the thing dry.
07:07So let's wait a little more and see what happens this time.
07:11Yeah, you see this time it actually looks like it's doing it right.
07:15See how the water is coming up the little pipe into the dome and then falls back onto the little basket.
07:23It filters through the coffee and then coffee water, brown coffee water falls back down to the bottom.
07:30And I suppose the process repeats and repeats.
07:33Coffee goes up again, goes through the basket of coffee on its way down, gets a little stronger.
07:39And then, yeah, repeat again until it's nice and strong enough.
07:48Yeah, now you're getting that delicious coffee aroma in the air.
07:52There does seem to be a little bit of coffee bits in that little glass dome.
07:57I don't think that's supposed to be there.
07:59I think maybe you are supposed to use coffee beans rather.
08:02Then you probably won't get that at all.
08:04So it appears you do need a nice rough coffee that won't go through the little sift of the basket.
08:11You just want the coffee colored water, the coffee flavored water to drip through, not the coffee itself.
08:17I'm gonna turn the heat down a little bit since it's still percolating.
08:23Percolating, yeah. Now I know what the word means.
08:26Okay, I think that's a good color now.
08:29We are running out of time here unfortunately, so I think I'm gonna just drink it as it is now.
08:36Probably it'll taste alright.
08:38So, let's turn off the flame.
08:41Ah, you see that looks a lot better.
08:45Still a little green or yellowish.
08:49Not very brownish.
08:51But I suppose we could percolate it some more or add more coffee if there isn't any more coffee in there.
09:00Cheers, I tells ya!
09:02Let's taste this brew.
09:08Mmm, very good, yes, but it could be stronger.
09:12I might have overpowered it a bit now with the milk also.
09:18A little bit too much milk I would say.
09:20And, ah, yeah, the coffee can percolate a little while longer.
09:24Let me just see how much is in there still.
09:27More than enough coffee.
09:30I think it just needs to percolate a lot longer than this.
09:34So we can really get that coffee flavor into the water.
09:38Yeah, I think that's what I did differently last night.
09:42I basically let it percolate and I went on preparing my supper.
09:47Probably it went for like 20, 25, 30 minutes.
09:50I wasn't really counting the time.
09:52But yeah, I think that's what happened.
09:54It brewed slowly until the coffee was really delicious.
09:58This can still go a little bit.
10:00It's a little bit weak.
10:02But I'm not going to complain.
10:04It's not bad.
10:06Cheers to you.
