00:00KD, since leaving Steph, you've just been wandering the desert.
00:11Wandering the desert, and every time that you see a mirage, you think it's an oasis,
00:16and you start sipping from the water, only to find out that it's filled with sand.
00:19Now, back to the morning roast with Joe Spadoni.
00:24You're weak, you're out of control, and you become an embarrassment to yourself and everybody else.
00:29And Joe Shasky on 95.7 The Game.
00:33You really are.
00:35And that voice you heard was Joe Shasky last segment, talking about Kevin Durant now being a Houston Rocket,
00:41as that trade came to fruition yesterday.
00:43Shamshrani on ESPN.
00:45Jalen Green, Dylan Brooks, the No. 10 pick, and five second-round picks.
00:50Back to the Suns, who desperately need all the draft capital they can get.
00:53I don't know what you're going to get with five second-round picks, Joe,
00:56but they'll take it, and they'll take Jalen Green,
00:59but it is pretty wild how much they fumbled the bag.
01:02Mikael Bridges, Cam Johnson, now Kevin Durant,
01:07and you're basically going to be left with Jalen Green as the guy with Devin Booker.
01:13That's not a winning combination.
01:15By the way, Devin Booker, if I debook, I kind of want to debook it out of there at this point.
01:20Why the hell would I want to stay in Phoenix, right?
01:23Well, he's a guy that Warriors should be targeting.
01:25A bigger two-guard that can defend opposite Steph Curry and be a catch-and-shoot guy
01:29who can also put the ball on the floor.
01:31I mean, with the trade yesterday from KD to Houston, how much more pressure, I guess,
01:36does that put on this Warriors front office in this offseason to get a big deal done?
01:40Do the Warriors need to make a big deal?
01:43Do they need to make a big splash this summer, Joe?
01:45Do you believe that?
01:46Let's throw the KD thing to the side.
01:49I talked myself into the Warriors being very, very close, right?
01:52I did, as the season went on.
01:54But they were.
01:55They were a Western Conference semifinals team.
01:57They were.
01:57But what were some of the things that was going to do them in?
02:00Their Achilles heel.
02:01They couldn't guard any bigs.
02:03Yeah, their lack of size.
02:05Right.
02:05I look at it right now.
02:06And not just could they not guard any bigs.
02:08They were also on the perimeter very limited defensively.
02:11Again, the two-guard is a huge hole for them right now.
02:15Just a huge hole.
02:17As a defender, as a catch-and-shoot guy, they don't have enough shooting and they couldn't defend.
02:21So as I look at who is good right now in the West and who's going to be rolling it back and OKC's going nowhere.
02:29And I'm not sure you have any answers against them, okay?
02:32I talked myself into the Warriors have a chance.
02:34I'm going to walk that back.
02:36No.
02:37The games might have been exciting.
02:40That doesn't mean that they were going to beat them.
02:42I might be a little delusional in thinking they had a better chance.
02:45I'm not sure.
02:46Had they matched up against the Thunder, and again, if Steph is healthy in that Timberwolves
02:50series, what does it go?
02:52Does it go six games?
02:53Does it go seven games still?
02:54How much pound of flesh are you getting taken away from you going up against a very young
02:58Thunder team?
02:59I would have liked to see it, but again, we'll never know.
03:02They'll all be a year older.
03:03Jalen is a problem.
03:05SGA is a problem.
03:06Who are you defending on the perimeter with those two?
03:09Secondarily, they have Hartenstein, who can get all the rebounds that you failed to get.
03:13I mean, if Steven Adams, who was a role player off the bench for Houston and not a starter
03:19like Hartenstein, playing heavy minutes, if that guy's destroying them, you don't think
03:23Hartenstein would destroy them?
03:25Well, yes, but also, well, again, I saw moments in these playoffs from that Thunder team where
03:31they looked like the young, inexperienced team at times.
03:33Sure, but they're now a year older with a championship under their belt.
03:36Sure.
03:37I'm saying, again, hindsight's always 20-20.
03:39We'll never know, but had the Warriors advanced to the Western Conference Finals, I would have
03:43loved as strong, I would have liked their chances against them because I do think that
03:48inexperience and that lemon booty that Bonte likes to talk about would have been there
03:52for the Thunder against the likes of Stephen Curry, Draymond, and Jimmy Butler.
03:59Like, the fact that they kind of just went through the T-Wolves like a hot knife through
04:05butter.
04:07No one really challenged them except for who?
04:09The Denver Nuggets in the second round.
04:11And then they were shot because who was hurt in Game 7?
04:14One of their most important players, Aaron Gordon.
04:16Listen, but they're young.
04:18I know.
04:18I know age matters.
04:19And ascending.
04:20I know.
04:20You know, and they're dynamic and their bench defense.
04:24They're one of the better defensive teams of the last decade.
04:27Listen, I'm not here to tell you the Warriors can get younger.
04:29They can't.
04:30There's no magical elixir.
04:31No matter what people want to try to sell you at 4 in the morning, there's not some
04:34serum.
04:36Nugenics isn't going to be there for Steph, Jimmy, and Draymond to reverse all this stuff.
04:40They are going to get older.
04:41How do you get better around those guys, or do you have to move off of a Jimmy or a
04:47Draymond, or are they even going to contemplate doing something like that?
04:50I'm just looking around the West, as you just said.
04:53The Kevin Durant move is interesting to me.
04:54I still think the Warriors are slightly ahead of them, and I think they are in that muddled
04:59second tier of the Western Conference.
05:01There's tier one, which is OKC right now.
05:03That is tier one.
05:05Outside of that, I'm putting the Rockets, the Nuggets, Clippers, T-Wolves, Warriors, and
05:11Lakers all in the same bucket.
05:13Joe, they have the same issues today that they've had for a couple years, but I know
05:18they went on a winning streak with Jimmy, and now we've had time to kind of take a deep
05:22breath, relax.
05:23I want to be a little less emotional, because I know how emotional I can get in the moment,
05:29and I get real biased.
05:30I freely admit these things.
05:32You?
05:32No.
05:33Let's step back.
05:33Let's step back, right?
05:35They weren't going to guard Anthony Edwards or SGA.
05:38They had no one on the perimeter.
05:40So you're going to roll back GP2, got cooked by Anthony Edwards.
05:44What's that going to do?
05:45All right?
05:46We love Potts.
05:47It's great seeing him sideline, you know, cheering on the Valkyries.
05:50He ain't guarding a trash can.
05:51All right?
05:52He might get a couple of charges here and there.
05:54He can get better.
05:56Is he all of a sudden becoming laterally quicker?
05:58No.
05:58Well, we'll see.
05:59He'll work on his defense.
06:01All right.
06:02And then, like, they failed for two months, even during the win streak,
06:06to defend any athletic big.
06:09I could go through the list of guys who just tormented them and destroyed them.
06:13And so as I look around the West, I say to myself, they're two Achilles heel.
06:17And that's defensively, by the way.
06:19I haven't even addressed the shooting.
06:21They're two Achilles heels defensively.
06:23If you roll back a similar roster, meaning you re-sign Kavon, you re-sign GP2,
06:28you retain Jonathan Kaminga for the time being, those flaws aren't going away.
06:35All right?
06:35Then, like, now I go to offense and I say to myself, boy, you really lack shooting.
06:40I mean, you lack shooting so much, you are dying for Buddy Heald to be one of your second-best perimeter scorers.
06:48That's a recipe for a giant migraine.
06:51And so I'm sitting here and I'm just – I've taken a deep breath.
06:55I've watched the dust settle from the West and I say to myself, they need a big swing.
07:01Jimmy move was great.
07:03I was all in.
07:04If there's a bigger move that involves Jimmy, I'm open to it.
07:07But I don't think rolling back Kavon, rolling back GP2, bringing back Jonathan Kaminga, that is not good enough.
07:15And if the ultimate goal is to win a championship and beat that Oklahoma City team
07:18or upend that Minnesota Timberwolves team that knocked you out, yeah, you're going to need to do some heavy lifting.
07:25I don't think this roster is good enough.
07:27Well stated.

07:34Nick Ferdel joining us at 8 o'clock.
07:35Our Odyssey NBA insider.
07:37You know cousin Nick Ferdel, former host here at the station.
07:40As well, thank you.
07:41And we'll be sure to play his open this time.
07:43I felt so bad when he played his open last time.
07:45That was flag on me.
07:47But we'll ask Nick about where he has the Warriors stacked up right now in regards to the West.
07:52Because I do think it's kind of like how I viewed the East this past year.
07:57One injury changed everything.
07:59Like, right when Tate went down, it was all hands on deck.
08:04Who the hell is going to take this thing?
08:05Is it going to be the Knicks?
08:06Is it going to be the Pacers?
08:07Who's it going to be?
08:08And it ended up being the Pacers outlasting the Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals.
08:11Like, the Thunder being, like, the team in the West, it doesn't have that fear factor like the Warriors a decade ago for me.
08:18Like, I don't feel the same way about this Thunder team.
08:22Like, because people are talking about it, Joe.
08:23Like, oh, this team reminds me a lot about the Golden State Warriors.
08:26And I was like, Shane's 26.
08:27Shane's way older.
08:28Then, yeah, exactly.
08:29Shane's, like, Shane, but he's older.
08:31Like, he's a little bit older now.
08:32No, but he's 26.
08:35Yeah, I know that.
08:36I know.
08:36I'm saying, like, this team is, like, a veteran-laden team.
08:40Like, I'm not comparing it to...
08:42They're pretty battle-tested for how young they are.
08:44But they just got blown out in Game 6.
08:46You just don't believe in the Olympics.
08:47I just don't believe in the Olympics.
08:48That's fine.
08:49I don't.
08:49I don't.
08:49I think we need to give them credit today.
08:51Oh, no.
08:52They're the champs.
08:53They were the best.
08:54Like, I'm not going into next season saying, like, oh, their head and shoulder's better than everyone else.
08:59I don't view them like that.
09:00So, I do think if the Warriors play them in a series next year, they could beat them.
09:05It's not like David versus Goliath.
09:07Going through this, who's guarding SGA?
09:10We'll see.
09:11Okay.
09:11And then, now who's guarding Shane?
09:13Is Kaminga going to be there?
09:13But this is what you have when you're building a team to beat and knock off that team.
09:18Right?
09:18You have to assemble a roster that can slow them down a little.
09:21And, like, right now I say to myself, well, are you going to outscore them?
09:24Probably not.
09:25Right?
09:25You don't have the shooting that they have or the, you know, the ISO scores that they have.
09:29Or are you going to defend against them and make them, you know, make their job a little more difficult right now?
09:35I don't think you have the personnel.
09:37You have no one to guard SGA.
09:39And I'm not even bringing up Jalen.
09:40You really don't have anyone to guard, you know, Chet Holmgren currently.
09:44They've got multiple guys that come off the bench, whether it's Wallace or whomever,
09:47who are going to defend and be athletic and can knock down shots in the perimeter.
09:51So, it's not an either-or, meaning, like, I've got to get better on offense, I've got to get better or on defense.
09:57No, it's literally you have to get better on both ends of the floor.
10:01888-957-9570 is the number.
10:04How and what do the Warriors do this offseason to get them back into, hell, Western Conference Finals?
10:11Can they even get there first?
10:12I think that is going to be the goal of this offseason.
10:15Can I get to the Western Conference Finals?
10:17But, when you're relying on three older guys, as you're saying, Joe, it's going to be very difficult.
10:23And, again, this goes back to the conversation, the regular season, all the games, all the injuries, all that baked into it.
10:28What are their options this offseason outside of Jonathan Kaminga?
10:31And that's going to be the main key, right?
10:33Like, their best move might just be bringing back J.K.
10:38That might be the best move of the offseason.
10:40I don't think that's sexy for a lot of people, but it might be the best move for both parties involved.
10:45I'm open to it, but when you say that, like, let's just play this out, right?
10:49Like, let's just, you know, again, let's say they're in a seven-game series with OKC, all right?
10:54J.K.'s back.
10:55I just have a hard time believing J.K. is going to get the nod with this head coach over a GP2.
11:02You know what he's going to do.
11:03At this point, you can't be playing like Gary Payton over Jonathan Kaminga.
11:06Steve Kirsten in his end-of-season presser, like, no.
11:09Jonathan, if he comes back next year, is probably going to be starting, and he's going to have to be playing.
11:12Then why, I mean, again, then why didn't he start him in the closeout game?
11:16Like, I just, look, your actions always will speak louder than your words.
11:20Kerr could say whatever he wants.
11:22Kerr was given a whole new template once Jimmy Butler came in, and he had to, you know, do things on the fly.
11:28And Kaminga still came off the bench.
11:29OK, because, listen, it was a Rubik's Cube puzzle that they had to solve.
11:33And let's be honest, in the regular season, it was working.
11:35Whatever Kerr was doing was working.
11:37It was working all the way up until he got to the Western Conference semis, and Steph got hurt.
11:40And then we wanted to crush the guy.
11:42Like, listen, they'll figure it out.
11:45They'll figure it out this offseason if J.K. does stay.
11:47He'll have to.
11:49He's going to have more time with Jimmy Butler, with Steph, with Draymond, and they're going to be on the court.
11:54Like, there has not been enough time for those guys to be together on the court for me to have, like, a definitive opinion on if it's going to work or not.
12:02Yeah, but I also—
12:03But can we give them time is what I'm saying.
12:05Yeah, but I've also watched his coach for a decade, and I'm not knocking him.
12:08And this is the way he is.
12:09Like, he's won a lot of games this way.
12:11He's always going to go back to his guys.
12:13Like, he very rarely is going to allow somebody to, you know, break the mold of what he thinks they are.
12:20You know, GP2 and Kavon Looney are always going to get the benefit of the doubt over—and I'm just going to use these guys as examples—over Trace Jackson Davis and J.K.
12:30Are they not?
12:31Well, I'll see next year, right?
12:34Gary Payton—
12:35I've said that for three straight years.
12:37But the expectations this past season are going to be different than what they are going into this season.
12:41Last season, what were the expectations for the Warriors heading into the year?
12:44Meaningful basketball games, I think.
12:46Yeah.
12:46Can you be a playoff team instead of a play-in team?
12:50Well, they ended up being a play-in team.
12:52They had an opportunity to be a playoff team.
12:53Hell, they had an opportunity to have home court advantage towards the end of the season.
12:57They didn't get it done.
12:57But ultimately, they did get past the first round.
13:00I think most Warriors would have taken that at the bare minimum if I told you that heading into last season.
13:05Heading into this season?
13:06Like, what are your expectations now?
13:08After watching the Oklahoma City Thunder win, after watching the news break yesterday, Kevin Durant's a Houston Rocket,
13:15have your expectations shifted at all about the Dubs?
13:18Look, the goal with Steph Curry is to be in the Western Conference Finals or better, right?
13:23Is it not?
13:24Yes.
13:25Well, Steph would just tell you meaningful basketball.
13:27But the goal always is to win a champion.
13:29Yeah, exactly.
13:30You've got a couple of years left.
13:32And so I just, you know, I love JK.
13:36You know I do.
13:36I'm a huge JK fan.
13:38But I also understand that their path to getting better might include JK not being on the roster.
13:43And I also understand that the coach sees JK a certain way and is always going to revert back to other guys that don't make critical mistakes that JK does.
13:55And although they might be more limited than what JK can bring to the table, he just, he really likes their veteran presence.
14:03I'm not even knocking Kerr.
14:05I'm just saying, like, you have to understand his tendencies.
14:08And his tendencies are always going to lean in the direction of playing his guys.
14:12Well, yes.
14:13Let's put on that.
14:13Let's do it.
14:16Let's put on that.
14:17Let's put on that.
14:20This is such a surreal.
14:21It's about thank you for nog законч upon being here.
