00:00Hello, Madredistas, and welcome to this live training session coverage from the Palm Beach Garden, just to say, in Florida, joined today by Joe Rusling. Joe, welcome.
00:10Hi, Jack. Very happy to be here. Yes, looking forward to the game next week. Obviously, last night overcame a tough opposition with 10 men. Did very well. We're starting to see some of Xabi Alonso's future plans potentially coming into fruition. And yes, very excited for the next game.
00:27That's right. After the second time trying yesterday, the Xabi Alonso era got off to winning ways against Patuka in game two of the Club World Cup.
00:373-1 win with 10 men against the Mexican side. Drew Bellingham getting the first, Arda Gula the second in a lovely move, and Federico Valverde making up for his penalty miss in the first game.
00:50Now we're watching just the keepers warming up, and I'm sure we'll be seeing the outfield players, and there they are, coming out very soon.
00:57Well, let's talk a bit about that game against Patuka. Joe, of course, a much better performance than game one against Al-Hilal.
01:06Was there a big difference in the performance?
01:08For me, yes. I think that you could see just by the patterns of play. I think Arda Gula fits into that system fantastically well.
01:15I think he is really going to be a key player going forward this season. I thought Gonzalo Garcia, again, excellent.
01:23I mean, I think both the first two goals came from him and came from his hold-up play, whether it was flicking around the corner on the halfway line or him setting up Gula to nicely finish the second.
01:32It might not be that pretty, and it's certainly not very modern, but there's a lot to be said about Gonzalo Garcia's style and that hold-up play.
01:39I thought, especially in the first game, aside from his goal, you know, just chesting down some of those goal kicks, really linking up the play,
01:46letting the likes of Vinny Rodrigo run either side of him while he holds the ball up.
01:50He offers a lot to the team, doesn't he, and perhaps could be number two striker this season.
01:54He does. I mean, there was a lot of talk last year about Josselu and how Real Madrid did it really well.
02:01They obviously signed Kylian Mbappe, maybe the best forward in the world, but he's a very different player to Josselu, very different to Gonzalo Garcia.
02:08And I think it's something that, for the next season, it's definitely an option for Xabi Alonso going forward.
02:13I think he's the perfect man to play that role. I mean, yes, he's young.
02:18Yes, he's sometimes a little bit naive in front of goal, for example, but you can see the signs are there.
02:23You can see he can hold up the ball well, he can bring players into it, and that's how the first two goals came about.
02:29And most importantly, he can score goals too.
02:31He can score goals too, yes. I mean, 25 goals for Castilla last season.
02:35He's got bags of potential, and I think this tournament might be one to catapult him into the framework for Xabi Alonso.
02:43Well, it doesn't look like we're seeing Kylian Mbappe in training, of course.
02:48He's still recovering from a bout of gastrointestinitis, and that could mean even more minutes for Gonzalo Garcia up top for Xabi Alonso's team.
02:58Well, I was going to ask you for a man of the match standout player from the game against Patuka, but I think I can guess your answer.
03:03For me, Ardegula. I think he was fantastic. I think, for me, Real Madrid are a better team when he's in the starting 11, when he's linking up.
03:14I think that he connects the middle and front line so well. I think that might have been something missing last season.
03:22Obviously, you had the three star-studded attackers of Rodrigo and Mbappe, Vinicius Jr.
03:26But connecting that in the midfield maybe would have been one of the areas where it could have been improved.
03:31And I think Ardegula drifts into the space so nicely, just finds those holes and can really connect up the play.
03:38It is strange because in the press conference before the game, Xabi Alonso was asked about Ardegula,
03:45and he said that he agreed with the journalist that asked him the question that Ardegula has to play on the right,
03:50getting closer to the ball, staying on that right-hand side as a winger, if you like.
03:55But he kind of fooled us all, started him in the centre of the park,
03:59whilst Fede Valverde was starting out on the right-hand side, and to great effect.
04:04And we've seen him play through the middle.
04:05There was that game at the end of last season against Gepafe, where he started in quite a deep role.
04:10And as you said, really influential in the build-up play, really influential in just pulling the strings
04:16and letting the team function around him.
04:20As you did hint, we are starting to see maybe traits of Xabi Alonso's Real Madrid,
04:25definitely still early to tell, with just two games in and less than 15 training sessions under his belt.
04:33It's very much still a work in progress, but we're starting to see the results.
04:38Based off of that game against Patsuka, what can we say are we seeing of Xabi Alonso's football?
04:45Anything that stands out to you? Any traits in the style of play?
04:48I think, obviously, the reminiscence of Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid is still there.
04:53The directness at times, the quick play going forward, that is Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid on the counter-attack.
05:00But I think the difference of Xabi Alonso, you're starting to see maybe a few more patterns in play.
05:05You're maybe starting to see a few more triangles between the players.
05:08I think you can see almost building a connection between one another that was maybe a little bit lacking under Ancelotti last season.
05:16Obviously, it's very early to tell. I still don't think we've seen what Trent can do.
05:21I think he's almost, I don't know if it's nerves, we've barely seen him get forward in the first two games.
05:28He seems to almost be holding something back in that regard.
05:32I don't know if it's nerves, I don't know if it's just his first couple of games for Real Madrid.
05:35He hasn't played badly. He's defended well. He's done his duties there very well.
05:40But going forward, I don't think I've seen him put in many crosses that we know him so well for.
05:45Yeah, you and I both have seen a lot of him with Liverpool, and I'm sure many of those listening as well.
05:52And as you said, yeah, it's synonymous with almost constantly being in the opposition half, always switching the play, always putting in crosses.
06:02And yeah, we haven't seen too much of that, whether that is Xabi Alonso's instruction or, as he said, maybe just himself focusing on covering the back and not getting caught out going forward.
06:13But it was a 3-1 win for Real Madrid, despite playing with 10 men for about 85 minutes, a hugely impressive performance.
06:23The players said after the first game against Al-Qilal that they're trying just to keep the ball as much as possible, not do too much running.
06:30And the fact they had to play with 10 men for 85 minutes and had to dig deep and run about, probably chase possession at times and not have as much of the ball as they would have liked.
06:39Really impressive from the team and speaks a lot about the team's fitness, even after having such a short break.
06:47Elsewhere in the FIFA Club World Cup, Man City beat Alain 6-0.
06:53Salzburg, Real Madrid's next opponent drew a stalemate with Al-Qilal.
06:58Juventus 4-1, Guidad Casablanca, and then a goalless draw between River Plate and Monterey.
07:04Fluminense beating Ulsan HDFC 4-2.
07:09Real Madrid somehow avoided another South American upset.
07:15It seems like this tournament, we're just seeing the South American, especially Brazilian teams, causing all sorts of upsets.
07:21And it's been very entertaining so far, the Club World Cup.
07:24It's been different.
07:26I've enjoyed it.
07:26It is different.
07:27It's a different tournament that I think I've seen in my lifetime.
07:30Very different to the Intercontinental Cup that we see on a yearly basis.
07:34It feels like, obviously, nothing else can feel like a World Cup.
07:39But it has that feel when you see underdogs like Botafogo beating PSG.
07:44That gives you almost that feeling of when a big gun loses in a World Cup group stage.
07:49And we're seeing these teams be competitive.
07:52There was a lot of talk before the tournament.
07:54What will the group stage be like?
07:57Will the European teams just run away with it?
07:59We have not seen that at all.
08:01And we have seen PSG lose, who won the Champions League last year.
08:05If they can lose, anyone can lose.
08:06We have seen Chelsea lose the Flamengo.
08:09All sorts of upsets in the competition.
08:12Thankfully, not so far for Real Madrid, apart from that opening draw against Al-Gilal,
08:17who were, it must be said, very, very impressive against Los Blancos.
08:22Next up, though, is RB Salzburg, the Austrian champions.
08:27And I know you've done your homework, Joe.
08:29I always do.
08:31What can you tell us about RB Salzburg?
08:34Well, we obviously saw them in January in the Champions League, in the group stages.
08:38Real Madrid were very comfortable that day, 5-1 victors.
08:41But, obviously, they're known as being the dominators of their division in Austria.
08:47Obviously, not one of the most lucrative divisions in Europe,
08:50but they've done enough to qualify for this tournament, which is a testament in itself.
08:54They've been relatively impressive so far in the group stages.
08:57I mean, getting a point against Al-Halao is a great result for them, I think,
09:01considering how impressive they were against Real Madrid.
09:04Which shows that this next game is not going to be any walkover at all.
09:09And, looking at the team, is there any players that perhaps we should be wary of, looking out for?
09:15Well, obviously, Oskar Gluck is the stand-up player, scored in that first game against Pachuca.
09:21And one that's caught my eye recently is the goalkeeper, Christian Saviczytski.
09:26Very well done.
09:27Who's 18 years old and actually made his debut last weekend, Pachuca.
09:32But, kept a clean sheet last night against Al-Halao.
09:35Looked very impressive in those first two games.
09:38He's apparently played very well for the reserve team in the Austrian second division last season.
09:42You tell me you don't watch the Austrian second division?
09:44Well, it depends on my schedule, really.
09:48But, no, he's looked very impressive and he could be a breakout star from this tournament.
09:52Yeah, so, their draw last night took them equal on points with Real Madrid in Group H to four points.
10:02Real Madrid with a one goal better off in the difference.
10:05It's Al-Halao on two points and Pachuca, two games, two losses, minus three goal difference.
10:12It's looking like, at the moment, Real Madrid could be facing Man City in the next round of the tournament.
10:17It seems like, no matter the competition, no matter the circumstances, Real Madrid play Man City in every tournament, every single year.
10:26What does that prospect look like for you?
10:29I think that, I'm not sure on the scheduling for the last game, so I imagine that Manchester City play after Real Madrid?
10:36Yeah.
10:36They play after.
10:37So, obviously, who comes first and second in that Juventus-Manchester City group depends on that result.
10:43It could be that Real Madrid win the group, play against Manchester City in second.
10:48Or the other way around, Manchester City win the group and Real Madrid come second.
10:51It's all up in the air.
10:52Obviously, Juventus would be the favourable tie.
10:54Yeah.
10:55But it's kind of out of Real Madrid's control.
10:57The only thing they can do is win that final group game.
11:01And I guess, I mean, Real Madrid have quite a lot of success against Manchester City over the last couple of years.
11:06Of course, they've made a couple of signings recently, which could be a threat.
11:10But it's just intriguing.
11:12I think this is all part of this FIFA Club World Cup, isn't it?
11:14I mean, you see in a World Cup these big nations come up against each other in the early round.
11:19You see in the Champions League.
11:20I mean, Real Madrid against Manchester City was a playoff tie in the Champions League last season.
11:25So, it's not abnormal.
11:26And obviously, if you want to win it, you have to beat the best.
11:30So, it will just be another hurdle Madrid have to overcome.
11:33Looking ahead to Real Madrid's next game against RB Salzburg.
11:38We're seeing players come back from fitness.
11:41Like Camavinga.
11:45Ceballos, too.
11:46All coming back into the fray.
11:48Would you make changes?
11:49Antonio Rudiger, too.
11:50Now fit after his operation.
11:52Eden Militao.
11:54Would you make changes or keep that team that's pretty much been the same in the first two games?
12:00It's a difficult one because this is always the debate when it comes to these sort of competitions.
12:04Do you prioritize fitness?
12:06Do you prioritize fitness or do you prioritize consistency and getting a rhythm?
12:10And I think with it being the new Shabby Alonso regime, I think consistency is more important than anything.
12:17Obviously, the heat is tough.
12:18We heard Jude speak last night about the pitches being tough to play on as well.
12:22Yeah.
12:22But I think they have to prepare to play against a very good team that last 16.
12:26It will be either Juventus or Manchester City, most likely.
12:28And that is absolutely no easy fixture.
12:33And they need to prepare.
12:34And I think the best way to prepare is to get the system going.
12:38Get back into the rhythm of it.
12:40They haven't played.
12:41Obviously, that El Halal game was getting started.
12:44Yesterday was with 10 men that had to adapt very well.
12:46But maybe wasn't how Shabby Alonso ideally wants to set up.
12:49Yeah.
12:50I think they need one more game.
12:51One more 60, 70 minutes in the tank.
12:53Get the job done.
12:54Win the group.
12:55And then maybe bring on some players to rest.
12:57We are seeing Dani Carvajal in training too.
13:01Hopefully, it won't be too long until we see him back on the pitch.
13:04It's been so long since that terrible injury for the right back.
13:08And that could open up possibly some more opportunities for Trent Alexander-Arnold.
13:12I think there's a chance we might see him playing in midfield.
13:15We know that both Liverpool and the England set-up have tried that experiment.
13:20I think that with the sending off of Asensio,
13:23and obviously he'll be suspended for the next game or next two games,
13:27next game, I believe.
13:28Next game.
13:29I think we may see Shabby Alonso's five at the back formation.
13:33I think we'll see Rudi come back into the starting XI.
13:36I think we might see Carvajal on that right-hand side, the three.
13:39And we may see Trent Alexander-Arnold bombing forward.
13:42Obviously, that begs the question who missed out in the attack.
13:46Because everyone played so well yesterday.
13:47You can't take out Valverde.
13:49You can't take out Gula on that right-hand side.
13:52So it's a dilemma.
13:54Good dilemma to have.
13:55But I think we may see a five at the back in this final group game.
13:58Looking at Telly Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen team,
14:03one player that was integral to his set-up was Granit Xhaka.
14:07And, you know, the kind of player he is likes, you know,
14:11doesn't cover too much ground, but certainly, you know,
14:15likes to spray those passes, really stretches the play.
14:19That could be Trent, couldn't it, if you think about his qualities?
14:22It could be Trent.
14:24I think that in midfield, obviously, he's a relatively unknown quantity.
14:28We've seen him for England.
14:30Very rarely for Liverpool have we seen him there.
14:33He's obviously got the passing quality to play there.
14:35But being a central midfielder is so much more than that.
14:38And we just don't know whether he possesses the quality.
14:40I have no doubt that he might be able to do it in the future.
14:43But at the moment, in this tournament, I don't think it's the best option.
14:46And a player we've got to talk about, our compatriot, Jude Bellingham,
14:50had a fantastic game against Patuka,
14:53albeit playing maybe a bit further back because of the sending off.
14:58Do you think that's his future at Real Madrid,
14:59more of an out-and-out midfielder, an eight, if you like,
15:02rather than where he played in his first season
15:05at the tip of the diamond in the number 10?
15:08I think potentially, yes.
15:09I think that with the attacking quality that there is up front,
15:13Jude Bellingham is a great attacker.
15:14He's a great number 10.
15:15He finds spaces that other players don't find.
15:18And he played almost false nine a lot in his first season.
15:20Exactly.
15:21And I think that he offers something in that attacking position
15:23that not many do in world football.
15:25However, if you do play him now,
15:27you sacrifice one of the flair players in Mbappe,
15:30being his junior, Rodrigo.
15:31And I don't know if Xabi Lonto is prepared to do that.
15:34And the beauty of Jude Bellingham is his versatility.
15:36He can drop back.
15:37We can still enjoy his quality.
15:40Back in midfield,
15:41where maybe we see more of his defensive side,
15:43his hard-working side,
15:44because he can get up and down the pitch.
15:46There is absolutely no doubt about it.
15:48And, yeah, I think maybe this season
15:51we'll see him in a bit more defensive role.
15:53Okay, so, Joe, you are Xabi Alonso.
15:55You've already said you're playing a five at the back.
15:57Name me your team.
15:59I'm playing five at the back, obviously.
16:00Courtois in goal.
16:01Trent.
16:03Cardiff, how we fit.
16:05Rudiger, Hoyssen.
16:08Frank Garcia, left wing back.
16:10I think a midfield.
16:11That's where it gets complicated.
16:12Yeah, this is where it gets complicated,
16:14because we've got,
16:16I think,
16:16two or many
16:17Valverde
16:19are
16:20not negotiable.
16:22I think they start in that midfield.
16:24And then that leaves you with
16:25four players
16:26to play.
16:28Obviously, you can play
16:29either another midfielder
16:30and three attackers like that,
16:31or you can play
16:32we don't know how he's going to set up like that.
16:35Oh, no, it's only three players left, sorry.
16:37I didn't want to correct.
16:37Yeah, yeah, there's three players left,
16:39so you can play three
16:39in the attack,
16:40where you could see maybe
16:42Gula,
16:44Garcia,
16:45Vinicius Jr.
16:46You might see an extra man
16:48in midfield
16:48and two up front,
16:49where you can play maybe
16:50Gula or Bellingham
16:51behind
16:53Garcia,
16:53Vinicius Jr.
16:55Mbappe,
16:55or Rodrigo.
16:56There's so many options.
16:57I don't think I can call it
16:59on that attacking front,
17:00but I think
17:01that is why we've seen
17:03a four-at-back
17:03so much already,
17:05because
17:05there's so much attacking quality,
17:07there's too much to leave out.
17:09It's a hard call
17:10to leave out
17:11one of
17:11Bellingham,
17:12Gula,
17:12Rodrigo,
17:13Vinicius Jr.
17:15And I think that's why
17:15we've seen four-at-back.
17:16I mean,
17:17the big question was
17:18before and even after
17:19Tavi Alonso
17:20joined,
17:21was,
17:22will we be seeing a five-at-back?
17:24Will we be seeing
17:24a formation
17:25and a system
17:26identical to that
17:28of the one
17:29he utilised
17:29at
17:30Bayer Leverkusen,
17:31but it's not necessarily
17:32looking like the case?
17:33And he's
17:33said various times
17:35that,
17:35you know,
17:36it's not necessarily
17:37that important,
17:38you know,
17:38the system that starts
17:40the game
17:40or the formation,
17:41because that will change
17:43throughout the 90 minutes.
17:45It'll change
17:46upon the circumstances,
17:47you know.
17:48Of course,
17:48you know,
17:49you go a man down,
17:50you're going to have
17:50to change some things.
17:52And how important,
17:53we've said for a long time,
17:54Real Madrid have a lot
17:55of flexible players,
17:57players that can play
17:58across various positions.
17:59How important is that,
18:01you know,
18:02that diversity
18:02in both the system
18:03and the players
18:04that you're utilising?
18:05So important.
18:06I mean,
18:06I just listed there
18:07in the starting level
18:08the amount of different players
18:09that can play
18:09in different positions,
18:11especially lots
18:11across the front line.
18:13You also have Valverde,
18:14who's been seen
18:14at right-back,
18:15obviously shouldn't be needed
18:16now that Trent is there.
18:18We've seen Kamavinga
18:19at left-back.
18:20We've seen Chiumeni
18:21at centre-back.
18:22Who's been brilliant
18:22at centre-back.
18:23Exactly.
18:24So I think that we could see
18:25so many options.
18:27We might even see
18:27in that back-five Chiumeni
18:28drop into that back-five
18:30so that he can utilise
18:32maybe Valverde and Bellingham
18:33as a two in midfield.
18:34There's so many options
18:35because of the versatility
18:36of all of these players.
18:37And I think
18:38that might have been
18:39the transfer strategy
18:39over the last few years
18:40by young,
18:41versatile players
18:42that can work well
18:44in any system.
18:45Well,
18:45we've just had
18:46the final whistle
18:47from our producers.
18:47That's all from us,
18:48but be sure to watch.
