On October 6th, 2014, a man entered an office building in Chicago for a job interview. He took the elevator to the 14th floor… but never came out. Elevator footage shows him vanish between floors — and the button for floor 13 briefly lights up. The only problem? That building doesn’t have a 13th floor.

This is the true mystery of Travis Wilkes

00:00On October 6, 2014, a 32-year-old man named Travis Wilkes walked into an office building in downtown Chicago for a job interview.
00:08He signed in at the front desk, took the elevator to the 14th floor, and was never seen again.
00:14Now, normally, when someone goes missing, we see a flurry of news coverage, documentaries, podcasts, trying to find out what happened.
00:22But in Travis's case, the media's been relatively silent.
00:25In fact, the only way I found about this case was through a Reddit thread.
00:30Which begs the question, should we care about a missing man?
00:33A man who, according to his family, had a history of mental illness.
00:37Apparently, the police report listed his disappearance as a missing person, not a runaway.
00:42And despite the lack of media coverage, his loved ones haven't given up hope.
00:47A friend of Travis's told the press, quote,
00:49People need to know he's missing. We don't want people to forget.
00:53Well, I won't let you down.
00:55This is the story of what happened to Travis Wilkes.
00:58So here's what we know.
01:00At around 9.10 a.m. on October 6, 2014,
01:03Travis Wilkes entered the lobby of the 14-story office building located at 150 North Michigan Avenue.
01:10Security footage shows him walking past the front desk and pushing the call button for the elevator.
01:15When it arrived, he stepped inside and pressed the button for the 14th floor,
01:19the location of the interview.
01:21The doors closed, and the elevator began its ascent.
01:24Exactly 22 seconds later, the doors opened and Travis exited the elevator.
01:30Or at least, that's what the security footage suggests.
01:33What's strange is that Travis was never seen leaving the building or exiting via the stairwell.
01:38He did use his cell phone after entering the elevator,
01:41and no one answered when police tried calling the number.
01:45The footage from the lobby shows Travis signing in at the front desk.
01:49But other than that, there was no record of him ever stepping foot in the building.
01:53Not one single sign.
01:55The elevator footage is what makes this case especially disturbing.
01:59From the moment the elevator doors closed until it reached the 14th floor,
02:03Travis can be seen standing still, facing forward.
02:06In the first few seconds, he looks down, as if checking his phone or adjusting his clothing.
02:11But after that, he stands motionless.
02:14But here's where it gets weird.
02:16As the elevator approached the 13th floor, Travis turned to face the back wall.
02:20Then in a blink, he disappeared.
02:22One frame he's there, the next he's not.
02:25There are no signs of distress, no struggle, no one else entering the elevator.
02:30It's like he just vanished.
02:32Now, before I get to my theory, let me address the obvious.
02:36There's no such thing as ghosts, demons, alternate dimensions, or any other paranormal mumbo-jumbo.
02:42If there was, I'd probably be on Fox News arguing with a talking ghost.
02:47But, luckily, this isn't the Twilight Zone, so there has to be a rational explanation.
02:52Here's my theory.
02:54The building's 14th floor is actually its 13th floor.
02:57The building skips the number 13 for superstitious reasons, and the elevator is programmed to bypass floor 13.
03:05When a person enters the elevator and requests the 14th floor, the elevator travels directly to the 13th floor.
03:11Then it opens, allowing the person to exit.
03:14But, due to a glitch in the system, or a miscommunication, the security cameras don't pick up the person exiting the elevator.
03:21After all, it wasn't supposed to stop at the 13th floor.
03:25Now, why the security camera picks up Travis's reflection, turning around, is beyond me.
03:31Perhaps the camera has a motion sensor, or maybe it was programmed to capture a full rotation.
03:35Either way, the security camera inside the elevator ends abruptly at the 13th floor.
03:41There's no footage of Travis exiting the elevator on the 13th floor, or the moments directly following,
03:46but the footage from the 14th floor shows the elevator arriving one minute later at 9.14 a.m.
03:51In this version of events, Travis either exited the elevator on the 13th floor,
03:56or pressed the open door button and stepped out before the elevator.
04:00Reached the 14th floor, but because the 13th floor is technically the building's 14th floor,
04:06no one would have noticed.
04:07What happened to Travis after that?
04:09Your guess is as good as mine.
04:11Did he have a psychotic break?
04:13Did he get lost?
04:14Did he lay low to avoid detection?
04:16Or did someone foul play?
04:17I don't know.
04:18But what I do know is that he's been missing for almost 9 years.
04:22No leads, no body, no suspects.
04:25All we have are the security cameras, a building that skips a floor, and a missing persons report.
04:31Whatever happened to Travis Wilkes, I hope his family finds peace.
