Here are some of the annual, biennial and perennial flowering plants which I've found proved a magnet for bees, hoverflies and other insects when grown from seed in Ireland.

I'm just going to show you some of the flowers that the bees seem to be really fond of here.
00:48
They're not that close to my killings.
00:50
That's probably because they have so much choice.
00:52
But I've heard these are good pondingers too.
00:54
But there's the lupins.
00:55
They're about five and a half foot now.
01:01
And here is probably the number one.
01:04
Well, definitely the number one.
01:06
You can just see a bee lantern on there.
01:09
The poppies, the oriental poppies.
01:13
These come in all different shades of red, orange and pink.
01:18
You can see a couple there.
01:21
And they are so popular.
01:23
The bees actually fight over them.
01:25
Which I've never seen with any other plant.
01:28
And then you can see there's a bee in there too.
01:31
These catamaran bells are very, very popular.
01:34
A good landing pad for the bees.
01:36
And plenty of pollen and nectar in them.
01:41
So, these are another very popular one.
01:45
And the other one here.
01:46
There's another bee on that.
01:48
And that's a cornflower.
01:51
Very, very popular.
01:52
So, it's been a lot of traffic here.
01:58
Buzzy bees all week.
02:01
You can see some mulling about there.
02:04
Now the weather settle down a bit.
02:05
But these are, without a doubt, the most popular flowers that I grow in terms of attracting pollinators into the garden.
02:21
Sweet William have had some traffic too.
02:24
And there's other ones here, like Cosmos.
02:25
And some of these have yet to open.
02:31
And this is a, a tricolour daisy.
02:36
Which is about to open.
02:39
It's within the halfway stage.
02:42
The Aquilegia as well.
02:43
They're going over now.
02:44
But they were a good source for the bees.
02:47
And I know, probably the other flower.
02:50
Which you can just see in the background here.
02:52
It's not at its full height.
02:54
Or it's not opened yet.
02:56
I have quite a lot of these.
02:57
We have about 50 young ones as well.
03:00
These are hollyhocks.
03:02
So, they'll get about 7 feet tall.
03:05
67 feet tall.
03:06
And they will produce these massive spires of flowers.
03:11
And the bees go nuts for them as well.
03:14
I've got a lot of new things planted on the back here.
03:17
You can't really see.
03:18
There's some sweet pea there climbing up.
03:21
But, about the back.
03:24
Doesn't get as much sun as out the front.
03:26
So, it takes a bit longer.
03:27
Usually around 3 days.
03:29
3 weeks to a month.
03:30
Before.
03:31
The front flowers.
03:33
Start.
03:35
Flowering.
03:35
And then once these go over.
03:38
Which they'll all in the next few weeks.
03:40
I'm going to start under planting vegetables in there.
03:44
Some broccoli.
03:45
And some pussel sprouts.
03:48
And amongst them.
03:48
Just to make it functional then as well.
03:56
A lot of things we have in here.
03:57
Just while we're here.
03:59
Some root beckia here.
04:01
You can see here.
04:02
The first of the California papis has opened.
04:04
And this is a biannual root beckia.
04:12
That I bought as a young plant.
04:14
From a nursery.
04:17
And there's other ones that I've grown from seed on here.
04:19
These are annual root beckias.
04:23
And then up here we have a perennial variety of root beckia.
04:27
This is goldstrom.
04:29
Big orange daisy-like flowers with a black cone centre.
04:33
And that's something that the root beckias have in common with echinacea.
04:39
They're actually related.
04:40
So they all have this big cone in the middle.
04:46
Some oregano in the ground here.
04:49
And just looking around.
04:51
Some snapdragons.
04:53
Not many survived.
04:56
Some miniature sunflowers in the ground.
04:58
I've been spraying a lot of these with.
05:00
You can see that some of the daylies that grew from seed are getting.
05:03
Decimated by bugs.
05:05
I'm not even sure what type.
05:07
Could be earwigs.
05:09
Because there's no slime trails.
05:10
So I don't think it's some.
05:14
Slugs.
05:15
And I have been spraying them with garlic spray.
05:17
Just this last couple of days.
05:18
But I might have been too late to save them.
05:22
What else is in there?
05:25
There's loads of tiny wee plants here.
05:27
Along the front.
05:28
Just the last ones.
05:29
They've been sown.
05:30
And here.
05:32
There's a wee hoverfly.
05:33
That's just been hanging around here.
05:35
For the last few days.
05:36
So another.
05:37
Waiting for these sunflowers to open.
05:39
And I've seen them on there this morning too.
05:42
So that's.
05:43
Hoverflies are great.
05:44
Because they're larvae.
05:46
Actually.
05:47
Control all their pests.
05:48
Pests you don't want in the garden.
05:49
So.
05:52
That's a good one to have.
05:56
Strawberries.
05:57
And.
05:58
Some.
05:59
African marigolds.
06:00
My head's on one now.
06:02
And these are some I know Rebecca's too.
06:04
There's plenty happening.
06:06
And.
06:07
One of the other great pollinators actually.
06:10
And this one.
06:10
I found wasps.
06:12
All over.
06:13
And this was a bit.
06:15
Dry.
06:16
So I watered this morning.
06:17
I'm hoping it'll perk up.
06:19
These are straw flowers.
06:20
And you can see.
06:21
These are bracts.
06:22
These aren't actually the flower.
06:24
But they look like a flower.
06:25
And they're papery.
06:28
Almost like.
06:31
Sandpaper.
06:31
But they have this metallic sheen to them.
06:33
And these ones are all red.
06:34
And there's a kind of pinky rose one.
06:37
And.
06:38
Have them in here with some baby's breath.
06:41
Which has also been attracting a lot of pollinators.
06:44
And then.
06:46
Around here we have the sweet pea.
06:48
Or sweet pea.
06:50
And more baby's breath.
06:54
And then there's all sorts of plants in here.
06:56
These are Icelandic poppies.
06:58
There's a.
06:59
A yellow one.
07:02
A champagne colored one.
07:04
And a white one.
07:05
These were just grown from seed.
07:07
Thrown in a bucket.
07:08
In February.
07:09
They're quite hardy.
07:11
All the poppies in fact.
07:12
Are very hardy.
07:14
Here are more poppies.
07:18
This is some baby's breath and poppies.
07:21
These are tegettes.
07:24
These are marigolds.
07:26
You know little French marigolds.
07:27
But.
07:28
These resemble them.
07:30
But they're far far bigger.
07:31
You can see from.
07:33
Just some out here.
07:35
I got these.
07:38
Down in.
07:40
I think it was.
07:41
County Cabin.
07:42
Last year.
07:43
Or Leitrim.
07:43
No it was County Leitrim.
07:45
At the organic centre.
07:45
I've never seen them before.
07:50
They're like a tall branching plant.
07:52
And if I put these in bigger pots again.
07:53
I've already padded them up twice.
07:56
They would reach.
07:57
A really decent height.
07:59
Maybe four feet.
08:00
As you can see.
08:01
They have these.
08:03
Big marigold heads on them.
08:05
And just for comparison.
08:06
And there's a smaller marigold there.
