00:00Thank you very much for joining us from our Council of Oklahoma Governor and to give another message from the House of New York City.
00:12We're working on our addition to the County Governor, Valentine's Day.
00:18And finally, you are a generous service to the health of the U.S. students, as well as the affection and esteem, gratitude, and the whole community of your loved ones, parents, loved ones, and loved ones.
00:32And this lap goes to one of the most philosophical mid-weight champions in the Popslegate ever in you, and certainly still a great fitter to it, in your way, Rocky, Rocky Antle!
00:47So the man...
00:50Ali can put on, and this really is a shock for the ex-champion when the official champion, Joe Frazier, gets into the ring to receive an award.
01:13And that really was a well-kept secret there.
01:18And look at these two taking the last waltz there.
01:20Muhammad Ali and Boudini Brown, his trainer.
01:23And you watch, you'll notice Phrasey won't even go over to Ali, he's just bursting his sides with laughter.
01:29What a character, this man. How can he do this when he's coming out for a fight?
01:33And even the intended victim, Floyd Patterson, there looks amused by it all.
01:37Good evening.
01:38Good evening.
01:39Good evening.
01:40Good evening.
01:41Good evening.
01:44so that's it you can get your comfortable ringside seat with us then for muhammad ali and floyd
02:05patterson and the usual prayer there the muslim prayer by muhammad ali he does this before all
02:10these fights they're both wearing white trunks but i think they're sufficiently well known not to bother
02:15with identification and if you're not too sure well the man who's 29 and a half pounds heavier
02:20muhammad ali he's the tall one of the two
02:24so then this is the repeat match they boxed in 1965 when ali or then cassius clay was champion of the
02:38world and he stopped patterson in 12 rounds patterson's rather proud of the fact that he was still gamely
02:43on his feet at the end of that fight and wants to prove that ali certainly did not carry him
02:48and at 37 physically doesn't this man patterson look really extraordinary 13 six and 13 six and a half
02:58he weighs 188 and a half here so now we'll find out whether patterson in what he describes as a peekaboo
03:16style he puts his head between these high gloves and just duck inside that long left hand
03:25this left hand that he uses almost like a chinese torture there ali to wear down the opposition
03:33i think i'll be a bit surprised if ali shows too much contempt for patterson because he does have
03:50whatever else he doesn't have a good left hook and that's the punch that had ali on the floor
03:55in the fights with sunny banks henry cooper and joe frazier
03:59just casual flicks as you can see from the big man there
04:19he really is an amazing mover and at 30 as i say he isn't getting any younger
04:28so you can really say with these trunks you getting it in black and white as well as color
04:38now that's the leaping punch you may have to look for there if patterson can dive in with that left
04:50hawk he calls it a gazelle punch he really leaps off the floor that's the really the only chance he has
04:55of tagging ali
05:20so at the end of that first round there look to me as though muhammad ali had spent up so much energy
05:25uh shouting there at joe frazier who was introduced into the ring before the fight
05:29that he wanted to take it easy a bit in that first round but i like the look of patterson at 37 he
05:35really is incredible and could dance around quite a bit did not carry any superfluous poundage but
05:41this man doesn't even consider it's worth sitting down at this stage this is his 40th fight and of
05:46course he's lost only one and that was to joe frazier when he lost the title um when i say lost the
05:52title when he failed to win it back actually from frazier in this ring last march
06:05so round two then and the research round is over
06:20and ali just flicking that left hand but when he decides to put a bit of weight behind it it
06:25it is a hurtful punch now we'll see if patterson can use these clusters of blows that he used to be
06:32famous for combinations they call them in the american fight game he puts them together still fairly
06:37rapid but it's a question of getting near ali to do it that's the problem
06:51well we had what looked like a re-rehearsal there for patterson's leaping left hook and there he is
07:06trying to work up a bit of steam there trying to get a bit of tempo but both extremely relaxed fighters
07:13and uh you can understand that when you have a man who's been 20 years a professional
07:29well he was almost signaling there that he thought that punch was a bit low
07:32not only does he hurt with this ali he breaks up the concentration of the opponent that's
07:42the name of the game keeps him at bay all the time
07:48as patterson trying to set himself to leap in with that left hook you notice that
07:52ali's trying to beat him to the punch just say take that stay out of distance there it is again
07:57now he can really see that one coming unless patterson's trying to show ali that punch and
08:07then speed it up when he's least expecting it
08:20now this is a question now of ali's defensive skills
08:24he realized he can't take too many liberties with patterson because the last thing a veteran
08:31fighter loses is the power of punch they get a little slower but they can still bang a bit
08:46it looked a bit exciting to the bleachers as they say the backseaters here but those punches
08:50weren't weren't getting through he was just brushing past ali's shoulders with them
09:04so no they're not bothering to
09:22so no they're not bothering
09:23so into round three
09:37incredible casual look the whole time about ali you just can't tell when it's going to start saying
09:42well now you're going to get it he's having a look at patterson as they say
09:53well now you're going to get it he's having a look at patterson as they say he's having a look at him
09:55so that's the pattern obviously if patterson is going to stand square
10:05ali's going to rip those punches up
10:09so that's the pattern obviously if patterson is going to stand square
10:15ali's going to rip those punches up
10:25but to give it to patterson he has all the spirit in the world he'll come back at him
10:29he did this for 12 rounds in las vegas when he had a crippled back and kept going and rather resents the
10:35criticisms that ali was carrying him although to be fair to ali he denies that
10:43so
11:05still has quite a bit of speed there patterson
11:07obviously at 37 nobody can be quite the man they were but patterson reckons he's better now
11:12than he was at 30 anyway
11:25and i just noticed that he double jabs with the left hand patterson then turns it into a left hook that's
11:30the old formula when at one time they thought he had the fastest hands in heavyweight history
11:36but now ali's unloading on him a bit the research rounds are over
11:50so with a half a minute to go in this round i can assure you that from ringside those punches from
12:04ali were not taps at all he was really getting some weight behind those an impressive weight it is at 15 stone eight
12:10six feet three and a half
12:12six feet three and a half
12:20nine seconds
12:30well it's time the old gentleman here 30 year old now moment ali wanted to sit down he was standing up between those rounds
12:44here thirty-year-old now Mahmoud Ali wanted to sit down he was standing up
12:48between those rounds so let's have a look at slow motion
12:56so you can see how Patterson winds himself up to leap in
13:14so this is still replay then of the third round
13:19so round four
13:34and it was Patterson who was off his stool first that time
13:39and Ali decided he needed to sit down between rounds
13:43and now you can see it's been a little bit of tomfoolery there
13:50Ali getting in showing his face to Patterson saying okay lead to me and I might counterpunch
13:56this surely is what Jack Johnson did in his heyday the way he tried to torment the opponents
14:03what do you think that Patterson
14:13knocked out Ingemar Johansson he knocked out Henry Cooper
14:16defeated Archie Moore
14:19and there he is
14:20standing there with Ali really taking liberties with him
14:24but one wonders if he just risked that chin out a little too far
14:34what an infuriating man Ali must be to fight to stand there and just goad you into doing something
14:54now he's winding up that Bolo punch
15:00now he's winding up that Bolo punch
15:02the right hand you watch this he'll probably do it a twist underneath and right through the middle of Patterson's guard
15:10this is almost a repeat I think of that Las Vegas fight
15:18when Clay then really punished Patterson
15:24but Patterson was still struggling gamely
15:26rather sickening side in the 12th round
15:28just pulling a disturbing bandage
15:45off of Ali's hands
15:47this happens so frequently in his fights
15:49it happened with Jerry Quarry
15:50and with Oscar Bonavino
15:52of course you can't get knocked out with a bandage
15:55but it's a bit distracting
15:56it really is Patterson having so much
16:15what does he do with this fellow
16:18apart from trying to hit him
16:20which he is trying to do
16:21and he looked pretty impressive
16:25with that little combination
16:27that was a little like the old Patterson there
16:29so there he is then the man who went up to 16-2 this year against Mac Foster in Tokyo
16:50but he decided to whip himself back into shape
16:52he was in Detroit for three days last week winning a court case on points I think
16:56so he had to have a crash program at the weekend to do 29 rounds of sparring
17:01and Angelo Dundee was saying he might have overdone it a bit
17:04so then replay into that round
17:06end of the fifth round and it's scheduled for 12
17:34with his usual toying and taunting stuff from Ali
17:41but occasionally having to take a pretty good whack from Patterson
17:45both of them former Olympic gold medalist
17:53both won gold medals at 18 in Helsinki and Rome
17:57Patterson as a middleweight
17:59Ali as a light heavyweight
18:00although that's one time where the crowd got a little bit excited
18:04and who knows
18:05Ali may have been a bit worried there
18:07because Patterson got through with the punches
18:09I believe these Patterson successes always seem a bit short-lived
18:30you get the feeling that the big fella puts him in his place right away
18:33when he takes a liberty or two
18:35so Patterson trapped there in his own corner
18:51but none of the screaming from his seconds can help him
18:53but the crowd always like a sidestep when the Matador sidesteps the ball
18:59they love that
19:00no doubt about it
19:19but you certainly can't knock the physical condition of Patterson
19:25same weight as in his heyday as the world champion
19:29and he's had 12 world title fights
19:32and an additional one for a disputed world championship
19:34the referee having to keep on his toes even with these big fellas
19:44Arthur McCanty, New York appointed of course
19:47and of the usual shouts there from Boudini Brown
20:01from one of Ali's seconds
20:02let's go to war
20:04and the crowd really signal even the half successes by Patterson
20:16they really encourage every flurry of blows that he throws
20:19and there's one of the gamest men that ever been in a fight game
20:43no doubt about it
20:49you say well if you have four million dollars in the bank
20:52and you've earned eight million
20:53why do I have to go on fighting
20:56but this is what this man likes
20:57and this is what he does best
20:58and he really got through well there Patterson
21:01and there's the replay then
21:045,512,361
21:09the attendance is 17,378
21:13so the halfway stage round six then
21:33and as if you didn't know
21:36Muhammad Ali and Floyd Patterson
21:38both former heavyweight champions of the world
21:42and this is the really lively round it would seem
21:45and there's no larking about here from Ali
21:51there really isn't
21:52he's done the toying and taunting stuff
21:54he's taken a few punches from Patterson
21:56and it looks as though he wants to go to work in the sixth round
21:59Patterson lasted 12 rounds in the last fight
22:03it looks as though he's going to be lucky to do it here
22:05but that's what Ali gets for mixing it now
22:14by coming to fight like that
22:16certainly would suit Patterson
22:18he's lacking the height
22:19and having to have this 29 and a half pounds disadvantage as well
22:23and when Ali comes to him
22:27he has more chance with the counter punches
22:29some damage around Patterson's left eye now
22:39you just see him thumbing a bit of blood away there
22:41and it obviously came from that flurry of punches
22:46because there's been no illegal head work at all
22:49well this really is a punch up in this round
22:59and he keeps trying that big looping right hand there Ali
23:15sets his opponent up with the left hand
23:19there it is again
23:20and then tries to chop down with a right hand punch
23:23sort of a ripping blow that Ali uses
23:28that's how he twice cut Henry Cooper in their fights
23:30thing is when it comes to spirit and gameness
23:46you can count on Floyd Patterson
23:47even though that blood now dripping from that right eye
23:51and it's Ali taking him apart now
23:58with half a minute to go in the sixth round
24:01but if Patterson gets back to the corner
24:08and gets a bit of revival who knows
24:10he may go on a bit longer than this
24:12but this is where Ali is trying to make every punch count now
24:20there was no real big betting in this fight
24:29and you can understand why
24:31so now here's the corner men
24:50this is where many fights of course are won and lost in the corner
24:53they're applying this ice pack round Patterson's face there
24:56it can't be too badly cut because I don't seem to be using the adrenaline pads on it
25:01but there's a fellow who's really taken a battering in that sixth round
25:05an absolute dollar millionaire but still
25:08so you can see now that this left eye of Patterson's
25:15really is closing in the seventh round
25:17it really is looking a bit grotesque there
25:24and it although that was a low punch
25:26he actually slipped as he threw that punch
25:29so you may get an apologetic touch there from Patterson
25:32but this armistice will be very short-lived I think
25:36I haven't seen Patterson damage like this in any of his fights
25:43he was down 16 times in his two reigns as champion
25:46but he really is being taken apart now
25:48it's becoming a pitiful sight
25:50to see such a great fellow
25:52and at one time a great champion like this
25:55and the referee warning Ali for pulling Patterson on
26:00but unless Patterson now gets lucky and gets a bit desperate
26:07and tries to throw a punch he really has no chance
26:09I would have thought obviously that Patterson has
26:20trouble seeing these punches coming
26:23it's bad enough to get out of the way of Ali's fast hitting
26:29when you've got two good eyes
26:30but when one is closing that really is trouble
26:32and it's swelling fast this injury
26:37I really I'll be surprised if it goes longer than this round
26:41the referee may leave it to the end of the round
26:44he may let the seconds have another look at it and call the doctor
26:47and that is the desperation stuff now from Patterson
26:56as you would expect it's more of instinctive retaliation
27:00well he still has the pride of not having been knocked off his feet
27:10I'm wondering now whether this really is the last time
27:16we shall see Floyd Patterson in a ring
27:18and I think I suspect there's a little bit of compassion comes there with Ali
27:29he's not he's not really turning it all on
27:32but on the other hand he might be doing Patterson a favour if he does
27:36less than half a minute
27:42so with half a minute to go then
27:46this is the effort now from Ali
27:49I think he wants to take Patterson out
27:51there's no point in him really turning on this brutal punishment
27:56and he's bleeding quite heavily now
28:06and the eyes swelling
28:08and it looks yes the doctor's coming up now
28:15and it looks to me as though he cannot allow this very game man
28:19to go on in this one-sided fight now
28:22Dr. Edwin Campbell
28:27New York State Athletic Commission
28:28they're up in the corner by our commentary position
28:32and I really can't see how he can let this go on
28:36but there you are
28:39the doctor's far more qualified than I am to make that decision
28:42but he's already asking Patterson how he feels about it
28:49well obviously knowing the pride of Patterson
28:51he's not going to quit unless he has to
28:53it's a tense moment now
28:56and Ali's corner looking over
28:57to say what is happening
28:59but it looks as though they're going to send him out
29:01for the eighth round
29:03no the referee
29:05quite rightly refuses
29:07to let this go on
29:09and it just shows you
29:12how ignorant can the crowd get
29:14they're quite upset
29:15that the referee has stopped this
29:17at the start of the eighth round
29:18but I am entirely in agreement
29:21with the referee and doctor's opinion there
29:22it really is a bad eye
29:24it was a one-sided battle
29:25and one of the great fighters of our time
29:27shouldn't be humiliated any farther
29:30so now we'll try and have a word
29:33with both winner and loser
29:35it's ok I didn't get the motion
29:46one of these guys is not recognised of me
29:49can I get in fellas
29:50the winner is
29:52do you have any
