00:00Former UMNO Vice President Hishamuddin Hussain must speak up if he hopes to have his six-year suspension lifted, says a political analyst.

00:10Mazlan Ali of University Technology Malaysia said calls for Hishamuddin to be reinstated would ring hollow if he himself does not appeal.

00:19He added that if Hishamuddin does not express a desire to appeal against his suspension, UMNO leaders are under no obligation to accept him back.

00:29Yesterday, Johor UMNO Chief On Hafiz Ghazi proposed a motion for the party leadership to consider readmitting the former division chief into the party.

00:39Hishamuddin was suspended from UMNO for six years in January 2023.

00:44Media reports citing the suspension letter said it was due to a violation of Clause 20.9 of the party's constitution, though no further details were provided.

00:54In December last year, calls emerged for Hishamuddin to return to UMNO, but he said he refused to appeal as he was never informed of the reasons for his suspension.

01:04Meanwhile, Asmi Hassan of Academy Nusantara said Hishamuddin's experience could help boost grassroots support for UMNO ahead of the 16th general election,

01:14even if he is not as vocal as former information chief Sharil Hamdan, who was also suspended, or former youth chief Kairi Jamaluddin, who was expelled.
