Karate Survivor is a fresh take on the survivors-like roguelike genre, and a VERY welcome one. Jackie Chan style combat in unique locations, using whatever you can find as a weapon, flipping over counters, pushing crates into groups of enemies, and more. Very true to it's source material, and challenging at just the right times. I hope the developers continue to add more content in the near future, or even a small priced DLC with more maps, characters, even more great music, and moves. I'd love to see things like judo moves or throws, where you can throw enemies into groups of other enemies, and other moves that break up the hit queues a little more. Thank you @alawar for a great game and hope to see more!

00:00Hey, what's up everyone? Today I'm going to talk about a game that I think deserves a lot more attention, Parati Survivor.
00:06So this came out at the end of October from Aloar Games.
00:09You might know them if you played the Beholder series, I think there's three games in that.
00:13They also made Necrosmith, and a game that I like very much called Wall World.
00:17So this is an action roguelike, let's call it a bullet heaven.
00:20There's not a lot of bullets, but it's very similar to like a bullet heaven.
00:23But again, I really like roguelikes that bring something new to the table, and this one has really done it.
00:28So you play as a Karate Master who very closely resembles a certain Kung Fu movie star who I will not name in this video.
00:36You beat up attackers, you collect money, which is your experience as you go.
00:40Every time you gain a level, you get a choice of three cards, like most roguelikes, right?
00:44These are upgrades to different stats.
00:46Base damage, critical damage, range, health, speed, all these things that you're probably used to.
00:52Or you get a new move to use in your Karate Q.
00:55Right now, there's five maps, each with a unique boss, and there's two levels of difficulty, Standard and Master.
01:01And if you beat all the levels of Master, you unlock the Legend difficulty, which is a lot of fun.
01:06So let's talk about your Hit Q.
01:08This is your main way of fighting is your Karate moves.
01:10You have six slots, and you start each run with one random move.
01:14There's three different colors of moves, red, yellow, and blue.
01:17They're all different types of moves.
01:19They have different stats, but each one has some things to consider.
01:22So the first thing that you want to take a look at is the direction of your attack.
01:26So if you look at the card, you'll see an arrow pointing to the right.
01:30So these are not relative to how you're facing in the game.
01:33An arrow to the right always means forward, no matter which way you're facing.
01:37It always means forward.
01:39An arrow to the left means behind you.
01:41And then up and down literally means up and down on screen since it's 2D.
01:45So keep this in mind.
01:46Sometimes you might want to be using a build with moves that all hit forward.
01:51Sometimes you might want to have something that hits behind you, up and down.
01:55Again, everything is a little bit different, so just pay attention to what directions you have.
02:00They also have other stats on it like radius, damage.
02:03That's the main ones you'll see.
02:05Radius is basically like, okay, if it only hits in front of you and it's a 45-degree radius,
02:10that means it hits 45 degrees from directly in front of you, right?
02:14So you just got to keep that in mind.
02:16Some things only hit one direction, but have a very large radius,
02:19sometimes even 180 degrees, sometimes 360 degrees.
02:22So just pay attention to what kind of moves you're taking and what kind of stats they have.
02:26Beyond that, it can have other things like bleeding damage, piercing damage,
02:31bonuses like extra crit chance, extra radius, or status time, like bleeding and things like that.
02:36So it's pretty simple to understand.
02:38You have a green timer that's above your character.
02:41When this green timer resets, your move starts again.
02:44They get used from left to right, depending on how many you have.
02:47If you only have one, it only triggers one, obviously.
02:50Then you got to wait till that timer goes all the way around, then it'll do it again.
02:53But if you have more, it does one after the other until the timer runs out,
02:57and then it starts it over, so you have less time in between it.
03:00The colors do matter.
03:02If you group the same color together, you get a damage bonus for them,
03:06which gets better as you chain together more of the same.
03:08It starts at 40% and goes to 200%.
03:11This will make a massive difference in your endgame builds,
03:16so try to get all of them to be the same.
03:18As you unlock more moves, you'll not only get more powerful ones,
03:22but you'll also trigger the serial number system,
03:24which I don't mind talking about that.
03:26It's a little bit of a spoiler, but I'll leave some things out.
03:28The serial number system, if you put the moves in number order,
03:33you get even more bonus attacks.
03:35Check it out in the video here.
03:36When I have them in order and I'm landing the attacks,
03:40there's bonus attacks that happens around you.
03:42Sometimes they're all the way around you.
03:44Sometimes they're directional.
03:45It depends on the color of your moves.
03:47However, if I have them out of order,
03:49they won't trigger even if I'm landing them every time.
03:52So finally, even after you unlock them,
03:54you can upgrade them as well up to level 7 of each.
03:58This is really important.
03:59You're not going to get through a run very easily
04:01with level 1 and level 2 moves.
04:02You've got to level them up.
04:04They get just exponentially better as you level them up.
04:07More damage, sometimes more radius, more crit.
04:10They just get better.
04:11You want even more damage.
04:12You want that stopping power.
04:14That's most of what you need to know for the moves.
04:16You can be successful with a lot of different builds.
04:19Just find the moves that you like
04:20and what you like playing with best.
04:22Personally, I've had the most success with the red moves,
04:25but I've beaten the final one on Legend with all colors.
04:29I've done it with yellow.
04:29I've done it with blue.
04:30I've done it with red.
04:31It really just depends on which moves you like the best
04:33and which ones you've locked in the meta upgrades.
04:36There's also moves that you'll unlock as upgrades
04:38that aren't attacks,
04:39but it may include a small attack,
04:41like sliding under things like rolling over furniture,
04:45running up and jumping off a wall
04:46and clearing out an area of enemies.
04:48Once you unlock these, you always have them.
04:51You don't need to take cards in a run or anything like that.
04:53They just happen whenever they're triggered.
04:55It'll be up to you to learn how these are triggered
04:57and what situations they're best in,
04:59as well as how you can use some of them for crowd control,
05:02which is really what it ends up being used for.
05:04So just like in Kung Fu movies,
05:07the other way you'll be beating down enemies
05:09is through the environment.
05:10You'll get four different things you can use.
05:13Throwables, kickables, stationary items, and weapons.
05:17So throwables are one-use items.
05:19You'll see everyday things like bricks, plates, bottles,
05:24motorcycle helmets, flower pots, all kinds of things.
05:27Use as many of these as you can
05:29will help you whittle down groups
05:31and finish off more powerful enemies,
05:32or if you just need to keep them at range
05:34for a little bit while you get away.
05:36All you need to do is you run into them
05:38and it'll throw it.
05:39Take note that using these
05:42and any of the other environmental items,
05:44as well as the moves I mentioned earlier,
05:47you're like sliding and rolling over furniture,
05:49will stop your hit cue where it is
05:51and it'll resume once the move is finished.
05:53So if you have, say, three moves in your hit cue
05:56and the first one's a punch,
05:58you slide under something,
06:00it'll stop the cue
06:01and as soon as that move is done,
06:02it'll continue in your cue till it finishes.
06:04So just keep that in mind.
06:06So the second environmental one is kickables.
06:09There's lots of items that you can kick.
06:11So you have to unlock these in the meta upgrades
06:13and they do unlock pretty quickly
06:16right at the beginning of the game
06:17and you unlock them in size order.
06:19You start at small.
06:20That's things like soccer balls,
06:22then medium items,
06:23which are like barrels or shopping carts,
06:25and then really big items
06:26like maybe wooden pallets with stuff on them
06:28that you kick and hit a whole bunch of people at once.
06:31There's also some special types
06:32that have more than just the pushing effect,
06:34like the leather chair
06:35that you can spin around in
06:36and knock a whole bunch of guys at once.
06:38And some of them are even usable more than once.
06:41However, most of them are usable only one time.
06:43The third one is stationary.
06:45These are usually much larger items
06:47that have different overall effects.
06:49Large billboards,
06:51water towers that can collapse,
06:52tractors that you can dump rocks on to groups of people.
06:55There's a generator with an electric cord that's in water.
06:58You can electrocute a whole bunch of people at once.
07:00These usually only affect a certain area
07:02and sometimes take a second or two to trigger.
07:05But if you time them right,
07:06they can be really devastating.
07:08So the fourth one is the weapons.
07:10So there's lots of weapons on every stage to be found.
07:12Wood planks,
07:14baseball bats,
07:15pool cues,
07:15lead pipes,
07:16ladders,
07:17lamps,
07:18plastic flamingos,
07:19guitars.
07:20Everything has a limited number of hits
07:22and do different damage.
07:23So you really want to time them well.
07:25We'll talk about that in a little bit.
07:27Aside from melee weapons,
07:28you'll also find guns in some areas.
07:30There's a pistol
07:30and there's another one
07:31that you unlock later in the game.
07:33These are also very limited,
07:34but they pack a big punch.
07:37The difference with them too
07:38is they can shoot,
07:39they only shoot in a straight line,
07:40but they'll penetrate any number of enemies.
07:43So you really want to try to maximize
07:44by lining up your groups
07:46and those guns will shoot through
07:47every single one of them
07:48and do a ton of damage.
07:50All right, so power-ups.
07:51There's a couple power-ups in the game,
07:53most of which I won't talk about now
07:55because they're unlockable later.
07:57But the first one that you will see
07:58that you don't have to unlock
07:59is the energy drink can.
08:01When you pick this up,
08:02you'll get four arrows.
08:03All you got to do
08:04is press the direction
08:05that you want to attack
08:06and you'll unleash a massive attack
08:08in that area,
08:09which can take care of huge groups.
08:11This is really powerful,
08:12especially in the early maps
08:14where you first see them.
08:16Other power-ups show up
08:17as something you can pick up
08:18just like the energy can
08:19or sometimes as a card
08:21that you choose when you level up
08:23that'll trigger right when you take it.
08:24The other thing that you can pick up
08:26is the silver crates.
08:27So the silver crates are really important.
08:29You get these in the closed rooms,
08:31which is another unlock for later,
08:32or you get them
08:34when you kill mini-bosses.
08:35So these crates are filled
08:36with a whole bunch of stuff.
08:38They're filled with the teeth.
08:40Yes, teeth.
08:40And we'll talk about that
08:41in a little bit.
08:43That's how you buy
08:43your meta upgrades
08:44outside of runs.
08:45But they're also filled
08:46with either one to five cards.
08:48And those cards are
08:49just like the ones
08:50that you get when you level up,
08:52but you get them for free.
08:53You don't have to pick.
08:54If you get five,
08:55you get all five.
08:56It doesn't matter.
08:57All right, enemies.
08:57Let's talk about these
08:58for a little bit.
08:59You're going to find
09:00tons of different kinds of enemies
09:01depending on which map you're on.
09:03And they all change a little bit.
09:04Most of which are basic melee types
09:06with a little bit of variation.
09:09Damage, attack type, health.
09:11Some of them are bigger.
09:13Some of them have like
09:13charging moves
09:15that they'll do at you.
09:16Some of them throw items
09:18like bottles, knives, or bombs.
09:20Some of them are faster moving
09:21than the others.
09:22Some are stationary
09:23and don't move
09:24and try to block you into areas.
09:26But then there's the mini-bosses.
09:27So mini-bosses look exactly
09:30like regular units,
09:31but they have a white outline.
09:33They have a lot more health.
09:35Much, much more health
09:36than a regular one.
09:37And they do a lot more damage
09:38in some cases.
09:39And especially in the later on,
09:41if you do legendary difficulty,
09:43some of those can almost
09:44one-shot kill you.
09:45So you got to be really careful.
09:47But the same,
09:48but otherwise,
09:49they're exactly the same
09:50as what the enemy
09:51that they look like.
09:52If it's a bottle-throwing enemy
09:54with a white outline,
09:55it's still a bottle-throwing enemy,
09:56but it just does a lot more damage
09:58and it has a lot more HP.
10:00But the good thing
10:01is when you kill these mini-bosses,
10:02they give you a silver crate,
10:04which is really important.
10:05And that gives you, again,
10:06the teeth and the cards.
10:08So you're probably saying,
10:09well, what are these teeth?
10:10Yes, teeth.
10:11Sometimes when you beat up enemies,
10:13they'll drop teeth.
10:14Teeth and money.
10:16Money is for experience
10:17during the run.
10:19Teeth are for upgrades
10:20outside of the run.
10:21Those are your meta upgrades.
10:22Stage bosses also drop
10:24a lot of teeth
10:25and all normal units
10:26have a chance to drop them.
10:28So you'll get a lot of these.
10:30So a couple strategies
10:30and some recommendations
10:31that if you're going to start to play.
10:34So first off,
10:35your meta upgrades.
10:36So those are the upgrades
10:37that are done
10:37outside of the runs.
10:39These are permanent upgrades
10:40that change the entire game.
10:42Always match meta upgrades
10:43to whatever fits your playstab.
10:45However,
10:46there's two that I would
10:47always recommend getting first.
10:49One is the upgraded experience one
10:51and the other is the upgraded teeth.
10:54So if you do the experience one,
10:56that gets you more experience
10:57during the run.
10:58This just makes everything easier on you.
11:01The other one is the teeth.
11:02So you spend some teeth
11:03to get more teeth overall.
11:06So obviously,
11:06the earlier you do this
11:08in your entire playtime,
11:10the more teeth you get.
11:12So at least do one or two
11:13of those upgrades
11:13before you start on the other ones.
11:15It'll just save you more teeth
11:16and more experience
11:17and everything will be easier overall.
11:19But otherwise,
11:20match to whatever you think
11:22is best for your playstyle.
11:24Second one,
11:25don't neglect your moves.
11:27So the first two maps
11:28have a ton of weapons
11:31and throwables.
11:31They're everywhere.
11:33But you'll probably notice
11:34if you get to the third map,
11:35which is the rooftops,
11:37you have to become
11:38much more dependent
11:39on your moves.
11:40So don't neglect them.
11:41Fill those move slots
11:43and get upgrades
11:44for your best moves.
11:45Weapons.
11:47Use weapons wisely.
11:49They all have a set number
11:51of hits before they break.
11:52I mentioned this earlier,
11:53but we didn't talk about it.
11:54So for example,
11:55things like the lamp
11:57may only have two hits.
11:58The broom may have three.
12:00The baseball bat may have five
12:01and so on.
12:02They're all a little bit different
12:03and they do different damage.
12:05However,
12:05a hit
12:06is only counted
12:08as a swing.
12:10And what I mean by this is
12:11if you hit one guy,
12:13one guy,
12:14one guy,
12:15that's three hits.
12:16But if you hit 10 guys,
12:1810 guys,
12:1910 guys,
12:20that's still three hits.
12:21So you want to hit
12:23as many people as possible
12:24with every swing
12:26that's going to connect.
12:27If a swing doesn't connect,
12:28it doesn't count as a hit.
12:30But no matter how many people
12:31you hit with one swing,
12:33it still only counts as one hit.
12:35So you want to hit
12:35as many people as possible
12:37with those swings.
12:38Sometimes you can't avoid it.
12:40Sometimes someone's in the way
12:41or they clip just the edge of it
12:42and you get one hit out of it.
12:44But try to hit groups
12:45as much as possible
12:46with weapons
12:46is best for it.
12:48Be sure to check the upgrade menu.
12:50This is how you see
12:51how you unlock everything.
12:52Whether it's a new karate move,
12:54whether it's a new move
12:55to slide under things,
12:56to roll over bigger things,
12:58whatever it is,
12:59this is what tells you
13:00what you have to do.
13:00Everything has like
13:01an achievement tied to it
13:02where you have to do this
13:04this many times
13:05and then you get it,
13:05do this many times
13:07and then you get it.
13:07So make sure you check that.
13:09That way you're just not
13:10accidentally not doing something
13:12when you could have
13:12unlocked something already
13:13and it's just so you're aware of it
13:15and you're doing it more.
13:16And my last recommendation,
13:18bosses.
13:18So bosses are interesting.
13:20They spawn by themselves
13:21but slowly
13:23more enemies will join them.
13:25What I found
13:25I had to do a couple times,
13:27if you are really low on health
13:28when you start on a boss,
13:31that is a really good time
13:32to regen
13:32if you have a decent regen stat.
13:34So you can avoid bosses
13:37pretty well.
13:37They're not overly difficult
13:39to be honest.
13:40But if you have very low health,
13:42you might want to avoid them
13:44for a little bit
13:44while those other ones spawn
13:46until they get group spawning
13:47and just regen.
13:49There was a couple times
13:50where I had only a sliver of health
13:51starting the boss
13:52so I didn't want to risk it
13:53and get hit by them
13:54but I could pretty easily
13:56kill the onesies and twosies
13:57that were spawning
13:58while I regened
13:59and not take any damage.
14:00And by the time I was ready,
14:02I had like 30% health.
14:03So I was perfectly fine.
14:04Just a recommendation.
14:06And that's it.
14:07There's a lot more to it
14:08but I'm going to leave that
14:09for you to discover.
14:10There's a lot of things
14:10to unlock.
14:11There's a lot of things
14:12to upgrade.
14:13There's a lot of things
14:14to go out there and find.
14:14So I'm not going to talk
14:15about everything.
14:16I'm going to leave it for you.
14:17They already had a pretty big
14:19update to the game.
14:20So one of the things
14:20that they added
14:21that I really like
14:22when roguelikes do this
14:23is they added a hyper mode.
14:25That's what vampire survivors
14:26call it.
14:27They call it a hyper mode.
14:28Friday Survivor calls it
14:29high dynamic mode.
14:30It's just a fancy phrase
14:32to say that everything
14:32is sped up.
14:33So they pretty much
14:34sped up everything
14:35by like one and a half times.
14:38You don't have to have it on
14:39but I personally
14:40don't play on anything
14:42but hyper mode
14:43or high dynamic mode.
14:44You can choose it
14:45at the start of the game.
14:46You don't need to unlock it
14:47and it's available
14:48for all maps
14:49and all difficulties
14:49and it just makes
14:50everything faster.
14:53Your character moves faster.
14:55Your attack speed
14:55is increased.
14:56Animations are faster.
14:58Time passes
14:59that accelerated rate.
15:00That's actually
15:00my favorite one
15:01because you know what
15:02if I'm going to take
15:0330 minutes
15:03to do a run
15:04if I have the ability
15:06to do it in 15 or 20
15:07that's how much time
15:09I want to take to do it
15:09because I want to do
15:10more runs.
15:11The speed doesn't bother me
15:12and it takes less time
15:13which is fantastic.
15:14So I'm really happy
15:15that they already
15:16added this in the game.
15:17I think all roguelikes
15:18for the most part
15:18should add something like that.
15:20So that's it.
15:22Hey everyone,
15:22thanks for watching.
15:23Check out some
15:24of my let's plays of this.
15:25You can see some
15:26of my higher level runs

15:28of like the subway
15:29and stuff like that.
